WELCOME We have continued with our good showings Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium, home of the Saints and the Mick George Academy, for today’s Evostik League South Premier Division match. Today we extend a very warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Tiverton Town FC and we hope you have an enjoyable stay before embarking of a long, safe journey home this evening. Since we were last here beating Chesham United in what was an absolutely fantastic performance we have continued with our good showings and we have secured a final berth in the Huntingdonshire FA Senior Cup, having beaten St Ives Town 2-0 at Westwood Road and more recently, we travelled down to Weymouth on Saturday and were very unlucky not to come away with a positive result, even though we played a good sixty minutes with 10 men after Knighty’s unfortunate dismissal which sees him miss today’s game. Match reports for all

these games are included in this edition so I will leave the finer details of the games for your perusal. Our Under 18’s followed the First Team and the Under 14 Academy squads by reaching their own County Cup final, beating Hampton in the semifinal on Sunday 5-2. Huge well done to the lads and we look forward to seeing them in action in the final which is normally played at Eynesbury Rovers during April. Keep your eyes peeled in future issues and on our social media and website for details of the Cup Finals as they are released. Monday saw us hold another successful recruitment day for next season’s Scholars and Elite Scholars and the day was attended by 30+

interested youngsters under the watchful eye of Iain Parr, Tim Sargeant and Peterborough United Academy manager Nick Sheppard. A great day was had by all and we look forward to hopefully having a very healthy intake come September. Right then, back to today’s game which is no doubt going to be another tough one as Tiverton will be looking for points to climb back up into the playoffs and gain revenge for our 2-1 win down in Somerset earlier this season. Please get behind the boys again and hopefully come 4:50, we will all be celebrating another win.

MANAGER’S NOTES Welcome to you all today and a warm welcome to our travelling opposition today in the form of Tiverton Town. It’s been a good few weeks from the squad with three wins on the bounce which included a gutsy away display at Dunstable, a fantastic footballing display against Chesham, game management at its finest with a convincing Hunts Senior Cup Semi Final win and despite the result, a fantastic performance against a top three Weymouth side, with 10 men. So, we need those performances to continue today against another side who have play-off aspirations and for the rest of this month, with both

Hereford and Slough still to come. These are great games, no fear and lots of excitement as we look to maintain our push to climb as high as we can but more so, compete with these teams as a measuring stick to see exactly where and what we are. We are a little bit battered and light numbers wise with Skipper Luke Knight and Centre Half Liam McDevitt suspended and Scott Sinclair side-lined with a hamstring tear, but the beauty of that is, as we have done over the last few games,

we rotate the squad and every single player contributes as they all have done massively this season. Meaning it will be an energetic, honest and positive display form the side today and I’m looking forward to it massively. Thank you again for your support this season, it’s been welcomed and needed, especially to the die-hard travellers who commit their day to us. Thank you all and we will need your voices today. A special welcome for our next home Southern League Premier Division fixture of the season with TIVERTON TOWN our visitors this afternoon. As high as third place in the table early in December they have faded slightly with four defeats in their last six outings but are still ninth in the table just two points shy of the play off places. However, this is two places, but six points ahead of Matt Clements’ side – and they have two matches in hand. It will be Tiverton’s second visit to the town because four years ago they arrived for a midweek second leg of the Red Insure League Cup Final. The first leg in Devon two weeks earlier had seen a competitive 0-0 draw and St Neots eased to a 1-0 cumulative victory thanks to a 43rd minute Lewis Hilliard goal. Tiverton, like St Neots, are currently competing at the highest level of football in their history and when the two sides met at Ladymead earlier this season the result was a 2-1 victory for St Neots with a rare Ryan Horne double securing the points from a 410 miles round trip. In the League Cup this season Tiverton were one of a clutch of Premier Division clubs (including St Neots!) to make an early exit at the hands of a lower graded club as they lost in a penalty shoot-out at Barnstaple after a 0-0 first round match, and they were beaten in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup at Banbury. Coincidentally they also played Banbury in the

first qualifying round of the FA Trophy drawing the first match at home but losing the replay in Oxfordshire. Next season of course, Tiverton are likely to be in the revised Southern League whilst we are likely to be in the new Central Division at Step Three – a potential cutting down of travelling for both of our Clubs.

CLUB HISTORY After a long and proud history Tiverton took on the challenge of the Southern League, and after an impressive initial season they won promotion to the Premier Division at only the second attempt. In keeping with an unwritten Tivvy tradition the promotion came after finishing as runners up, but little did that matter on a warm and sunny day at Blakenall when the Yellows won 3-0 thanks to goals from Paul Chenoweth, Scott Rogers and Kevin Nancekivell to seal their place in the top tier of the Southern League. The step up in class did little to temper the Yellows appetite for success and the next two seasons saw them finish respectably in sixth and then fourth, only being denied a shot at the Conference after failing to win any of the last five games of the 2002/03 campaign. It is fair to say that the club has since struggled to maintain the air of invincibility that carried them to such great success, and the latter half of the following season saw Tiverton slump from second to

fifteenth and miss out on a place in the newly structured regional sections of the Conference. The next five years saw Tivvy back in mid-table, and a particularly frustrating 2006/07 had them fighting at the wrong end of the table for much of the season, often hampered by postponed games, injuries and suspensions. The only high point was winning Southern League Cup with a fine 3-2 aggregate victory over Hemel Hempstead Town, but even that failed to disguise the fact that there needed to be a period of rebuilding if Tiverton are to take the next step up the ladder. The culmination of half a decade of struggle came in the 2009/10 season when the club finished in the relegation zone. Tivvy were lucky to escape the drop due to off-field matters concerning other clubs across the nonleague system, and in May 2010 Martyn Rogers stepped down as manager, ending a 19-season managerial tenure. Former England Under-21 captain Chris Vinnicombe was appointed in his stead, but results were poor and he left the club after just four months at the helm, replaced by former Plymouth Argyle and Gillingham midfielder Mark Saunders. However, the slow start to the 2010/11 season proved decisive and Tiverton finally succumbed to relegation for only the second time in the history of the club Tivvy steadied the ship with a comfortable mid-table finish

in 2011/12, only fading away from playoff contention in the final month of the campaign, and after a strong start to the last campaign hopes were high, but a poor run of form saw Saunders leave the club in March 2013. Jamie Ward was appointed as his replacement until the end of the season, and in the summer of 2013, John Clarkson took over as manager and quickly went about assembling what appeared to be a very strong squad. A squad which narrowly missed out on promotion, going down 3-1 to Paulton Rovers in the play-off semi-final and Tivvy were also beaten in the Devon St Lukes final, in what turned out to be Clarksons’ last match in charge, 2-0 at the hands of Plymouth Parkway. Martyn Rogers returned for the following season and steadied the ship and after continued progress in their league position, they regained their Premier Division status at the end of the 2016/17 season after memorable play-off victories over Taunton Town and Salisbury. Tiverton Town Football Club has a history of which to be proud, and particularly in recent times some players that have graced the Ladysmead turf have been etched into Tivvy legend. Kevin Smith broke Frank Butler’s goal scoring record and went on to net 303 goals for the club, and Phil Everett eclipsed this total, eventually finishing his Tivvy career with 378 strikes. Smith and Neil Saunders captained the club to victories beneath Wembley’s twin towers, while Steve Daly, Kevin Nancekivell and Jason Smith are amongst the best players ever to appear in Tiverton colours. But without their forefathers none of the success of the past twenty-five

years would be possible, and Tivvy are proud to remember all those involved with their progress. TIVERTON TOWN FC SQUAD 2017/18 Martin Rice (Goalkeeper) Commanding goalkeeper signed this summer from Conference South side Truro City. Began his career at Exeter City where he spent 4 years before moving to Devon rivals Torquay United in 2007. He spent the next 3 seasons on loan at Truro before the move to Treyew Road became permanent in 2015. Jamie Price (Defender) Appointed club captain for the 2017/18 Premier Division season. Signed from Taunton Town at the start of the previous season and was an integral member of the promotion winning squad. Attacking wing back who can operate on either flank and has excellent aerial ability. Chipped in with memorable and vital goals last season. Nick Hurst (Defender) Signed from Bodmin Town last summer after helping them secure the Peninsula Premier Division title. Attacking wing back who loves to get forward, Nick was previously with Falmouth Town. Set the ball rolling in last season`s play-off final, his pinpoint cross headed home by Michael Landricombe. Last seasons` Young Player of the Year. Ben Mammola (Defender) First came to Tivvys` attention when he played a starring role in Shortwoods` shock FA Cup victory at Ladysmead in 2007. Brief spell at Weymouth before his displays at Willand earned him a move to Taunton

Town, from where he joined the Yellows in the summer of 2015. Owen Irish (Defender) Recent addition to the squad, signed from Division One S&W side Taunton Town. Commanding, experienced centre half who had made over 300 appearances for the Peacocks. Made an impressive Yellows debut in the 2-1 win at Banbury United. Tom Gardner (Defender) Rightly regarded by all at Tiverton as one of the clubs` greatest ever players. Joined from Exmouth Town in 2008 and apart from a brief period at Truro has been a colossus in the Yellows backline since. Clocked up his 500th appearance last season and was rewarded with a testimonial recently against League One side Plymouth Argyle. Last seasons Players` Player of the season. Michael Landricombe (Defender) Appointed vice captain for the 2017/18 Premier Division season. Mr Versatile can fill in at just about every position. Signed initially on dual registration from Plymouth Parkway in December 2015, before making the move permanent last summer. Scored the opener in the play-off final victory at Salisbury. Last seasons Managers` Player of the Season. George Rogers (Defender) Son of Manager Martyn, George made his debut for Tiverton in a Devon cup match before continuing his career locally and returned to the squad at the start of the 2014/15 season. Scored his first for the club last season in the 8-1 Devon St Lukes victory over Tavistock. Jamie Short (Midfielder) All action midfielder who can play in a number of positions and has a great eye for a pass, made

the switch from Taunton Town last summer. Began his career in the Exeter City youth set up before joining the Peacocks in 2009. Scored 13 times in all competitions last season. Ollie Knowles (Midfielder) Signed this summer from Conference South side Truro City. Attacking midfielder with excellent technical ability and loves shooting from distance who was part of the Exeter City youth set up. Previous other clubs include Frome Town, Evesham United and Paulton Rovers. Callum Hall (Midfielder) 19-year-old left sided midfielder who joined this summer after impressing on trial during pre-season. Callum was ever present for Plymouth Argyles` reserve side last season following his release from the first team after 12 months as a professional with the Pilgrims.

James Richards (Midfielder) Re-joined the Yellows for a second time recently, after spells at Bideford and St. Martins. The former captains` experience in midfield and defence will be invaluable to the squad and `Ricco` is definitely a fans favourite. Levi Landricombe (Forward) Joined initially on dual registration from Plymouth Parkway in December 2016 and scored on his debut in a 5-1 win over Didcot Town and has gone on to score a phenomenal 66 goals in only 74 appearances in all competitions after making the switch permanent at the start of last season. Last seasons Supporters` Player of the Season. Jordan Rogers (Forward) Joined this summer from Taunton Town. Prolific striker who netted nearly 60 times for the Peacocks over the previous 2 seasons, including the consolation in

the playoff semi-final defeat. He scored only 9 minutes into his Yellows debut, converting a penalty against Plymouth Argyle and his pace and power will add an extra dimension to the Yellows front line. Tom Bath (Forward) Joined last summer from Western League side Willand Rovers where he had spent two successful seasons. Chipped in with vital goals from time to time last season, most notably scoring once in each of the play-off victories over Taunton Town and Salisbury. Jared Lewington (Forward) Young forward signed initially on dual registration from Buckland Athletic, where he had been scoring for fun on a weekly basis, before making the switch permanent just before Christmas.

If there’s one thing people in Non-League football like it’s a good Budget chat. I’m not talking about the red briefcase the Chancellor holds up outside Downing Street, but how much players are being paid, or not being paid. It’s very difficult to truly know who’s got what. The managers who have got a decent pot of cash to splurge certainly don’t like to tell you about it too much, even when it’s obvious. And why wouldn’t you play it down? No point setting yourself up for a fall. Often the whispers won’t be too far away and you don’t want to give the opposition anymore ammo than they will already have. (The caveat being Billericay, where owner Glenn Tamplin has been pretty open about their weekly spending). Then the managers who haven’t got a lot will naturally want to tell everyone. ‘Look at how well we are doing and I’ve got no money!’ It’s to be expected. I popped down to see Alan Dowson at Hampton & Richmond last week for a cuppa and a chat about all things at the Beveree and football in general. Dowson’s side are unbeaten in 21 National League South games at the time of writing. The former Walton & Hersham and Kingstonian manager spoke about how much he loves winning and that the three points on a Saturday are what it’s all about, whatever your spending power. He said: “If you’re a manager, it doesn’t matter what your budget is, how much money you’ve got – and we all lie, we all pretend we’ve got the lowest budget. Managers will say to me and I’ll say to them – because I lie as well – that we’ve got the lowest budget. Because it looks good! “We all like to say we work on a shoestring, these people are only on a certain amount of money. We’re all the bloody same, including me. “But it doesn’t matter how much you’ve got, who you are, what your facilities are, you’ve got to go and win a game of football on a Saturday.” While money should talk, we’ve all seen in football at every level that it isn’t a guaranteed path to success. A few years ago Tunbridge Wells reached the FA Vase final at Wembley and managed to do it without paying their players. Guernsey don’t either, and they’ve had success. Or how about Corinthian-Casuals in the Bostik South promotion race. Last year they missed out on promotion to Step 3 in the play-off final but are faring well this year. The south-London club are a bastion to amateurism. I recently caught up with the manager James Bracken about how his remit is completely different from most managers in Non-League football. “It has its pros, it has its cons,” Bracken told me. “In terms of pros I don’t have anybody playing for me who doesn’t want to. I know a lot of other players at other clubs who will openly say to me they don’t respect their manager or agree with what he says or like the way he manages them. “But they pick up their money, it helps them with their mortgage, they’ve got kids to feed and it’s almost a job – lots of us have jobs we don’t particularly enjoy and you have to do certain things to pay your bills at the end of the month. “For a lot of players football becomes that. With us it’s never that. Boys are here because they want to be here, they want to play football here and they want to win. “You can get a lot more out of people with that kind of environment than the other.”

1ST TEAM REPORT ST NEOTS TOWN Southern League Premier Division With recently signed goalkeeper Josh Jessop recalled late in the week by his former club, Chelmsford City, St Neots Manager Matt Clements brought in 17 years old Cambridge United Academy player Finlay Iron on loan to take over the number one jersey, and the youngster performed with great skill and maturity when under second half pressure as the visitors strove for a comeback from a 3-0 half time deficit. Chesham arrived at the Premier Plus Stadium, as holders of the best playing record in the division, boasting a seven matches unbeaten run with the last six of those being straight victories. However, they came up against a determined home side displaying the rather unusual trait of an excellent start to a home match. Three goals in a 27 minutes spell saw them well on top at the break and although Chesham came back strongly, Taylor Parr in the home defence was outstanding against one of the most potent attacking forces in the division. It was only the second time this season that St Neots had enjoyed the luxury of a three goals cushion and in the second half they played with confidence and a resoluteness despite conceding an early own goal. Apart from the enforced goalkeeping change Manager Clements reshaped his side in a 4-3-3 formation bringing in Kyron Wiltshire and Stefan Broccoli for Nabil Shariff and Dylan Williams. After the early exchanges in which Iron had to sprint from his line to clear following a Liam

3

CHESHAM UNITED

McDevitt mis-judgement, St Neots saw a Dion Sembie-Ferris shot deflected wide before they took the lead on 12 minutes. A swift build-up involving Kyron Wiltshire and Davis Bridges ended when Matt Bevans handled a Sembie-Ferris cross and a penalty was awarded. With regular penalty taker Dylan Williams on the bench, Johnny Herd stepped forward to send the goalkeeper the wrong way to put his side ahead. Chesham responded with a spell of possession but created no real openings and on the half hour, a neat Sembie-Ferris back heel in the area bamboozled the visiting defence allowing Lewis Irwin to calmly slot past the statuesque goalkeeper. Iron did well to collect a curving free kick by former Saint David Hutton and then six minutes before the break the goal of the match arrived with Wiltshire slipping a neat pass through the defence for Lewis Irwin to unleash a rising shot over Harry Isted who got despairing fingers to the ball as it flew into the net. Stefan Broccoli was then tripped on the edge of the area earning a booking for Darren Locke. Chesham shaped up with a more attacking look after the break and substitute Jhai D’Hillon was quickly involved setting up a second minute attack that saw Lewis Toomey get to the bye line to cross and in his panic to clear Liam McDevitt only succeeded in turning the ball past the unfortunate Iron. St Neots then almost claimed a fourth goal as Sembie-Ferris raced half the length of the field and when his shot was blocked it

1

fell to Broccoli whose net bound shot was cleared off the line by Bevans with his keeper beaten. This boosted the visitors’ hopes and they produced some swift attacking moves with Lewis Toomey firing badly wide after good work by Hutton and then a Hutton free kick was punched away under pressure by Iron. On the break St Neots still looked dangerous and David Bridges found Sembie-Ferris unmarked on the right, but his shot was diverted just over the bar by a defender with the unsighted Referee awarding a goal kick. A series of substitution by both sides saw the tempo drop but four minutes from time McDevitt had a shot blocked on the line following a Herd corner. In the generous addition of seven minutes time by the Referee, St Neots were easily able to mop up Chesham’s late attempts to salvage something from the match. St Neots: Iron, Bradshaw, Herd, Knight, McDevitt, Parr, SembieFerris, Bridges, Irwin, Wiltshire, Broccoli Subs: Sinclair (for Sembie-Ferris 76 mins), Shariff (for Irwin 79 mins), O’Malley (for Wiltshire 79 mins), Wood and Williams. Cards: Wiltshire (Y – 59 mins), Broccoli (Y – 64 mins) Goals: Irwin 2 (30 & 39 mins), Herd – pen – (12 mins) Referee: Stuart Cheek (Stevenage) Attendance: 239 John Walker

HUNTS SENIOR CUP SEMI-FINAL St Neots eased into the Hunts Senior Cup Final with a very comfortable victory over their neighbors in a low-key encounter to make it three wins on the bounce. The match had been in doubt until the day of the match because of the winter affected state of the Westwood Road pitch and that probably accounts for the very low attendance. It was the heavily sanded pitch – only the second game to be staged on it since Christmas – that made football very difficult for both sides but in the final analysis St Neots took two of their chances well whilst St Ives never really got going and failed to test the visitors’ teenage goalkeeper. St Neots will be delighted with their first clean sheet since 14th November and only their fourth in 37 league and cup games this season. Manager Matt Clements took the Cup match as an opportunity to rotate his squad bringing into the side all five of his named substitutes in the league match just three days earlier and the performance showed just what an able squad he has mustered because despite the mass changes the overall performance did not suffer. St Ives had several regulars ‘cup tied’ after their squad changes around the turn of the year but that should not be seen as a major factor in the result. There was a cautious start by both sides as they sought to come to terms with the conditions. The first serious

St Neots Town

2

attempt on goal did not arrive until the fifteenth minute when Luke Knight was fouled on the edge of the area and Dylan Williams’ free kick was comfortably saved by Lewis Todd. St Ives suffered a setback when Eugene Libertucci limped off injured after just twenty minutes to be replaced by Ollie Snaith. Against the run of play after 27 mins former St Neots midfielder Peter Clark hit a shot from outside the box that bounced off the far post into the grateful arms of Finlay Iron and that was about as close as St Ives were to get to scoring all evening. Sixty seconds later St Neots came up with the perfect response as a superb 50 yards pass over the retreating home defence by skipper Luke Knight freed Scott Sinclair wide right and his early inch perfect cross fed Nabil Shariff to claim his first goal since scoring the equalizer at St Ives in the league meeting a month ago. Todd saved a low Johnny Herd shot amongst a sea of boots and six minutes before the break Shariff should have extended the lead, but he shot weakly wide after great play by Williams. Two minutes later another Shariff effort was deflected to earn a corner which was not cleared and from the edge of the area Dylan Williams hit a low shot past Todd with the aid of a slight deflection. St Ives danger man Tom Knowles was being kept quiet by Herd and he sent two free kicks in dangerous positions into the visitors’ defensive wall. St Ives needed a positive early response after the interval, but it

never looked like materializing. Sinclair went clear for St Neots forcing Todd into a brave save at his feet, but the St Neots man then suffered a hamstring pull and had to be replaced by Dion Sembie-Ferris. The home side sent on substitute Phil Draycott in a bid to boost their attack but with Taylor Parr and Liam McDevitt in commanding form for St Neots, they made little progress. Danny Watson spurned one chance after neat work by Rogan McGeorge and St Neots should have sealed the victory when Dylan Williams was brought down by a defender, but he sent the keeper the wrong way from the resultant penalty kick which hit the crossbar. The game then petered out with no significant chances created by either side in the final twenty minutes.

St Neots: Iron, O’Malley, Herd, Knight, McDevitt, Parr, Sinclair, Wood, Shariff, Wiltshire, Williams Subs: Sembie-Ferris (for Sinclair 55 mins), Irwin (for Wiltshire 80 mins), Bradshaw (for Shariff 88 mins) and Broccoli Cards: none Goals: Shariff (28 mins), Williams (41 mins) Referee: Joshua Crofts (Peterborough) Attendance: 103

Red Insure Cup Final – Second Leg (8/April/2014) ST NEOTS TOWN

1

TIVERTON TOWN

In just their second season at Step Three St Neots won their highest ever cup honour – the Red Insure Trophy – the League Cup of the Southern League.

0

(AGG’ WIN 1-0)

Their last major cup success other than in local County competition came 45 years ago when they beat Biggleswade Town in the UCL Knock Out Cup, so it had been a long time coming but for Manager Gary King and Zema Abbey it was their second successive netting of the trophy having won it with Arlesey twelve months ago. It was an interesting match and should have been won by a much greater margin had St Neots taken just one more of the several chances they created but with away goals counting double visitors Tiverton who play their football in the South and West Division knew that a single strike could wrest the trophy from St Neots grasp. Two outstanding moments defined this tie – the match winning goal by Lewis Hilliard who registered the outstanding distinction of having scored in every round of the competition and a magnificent instinctive full length save from Nathan Abbey that ensured the trophy for his side. With his full squad to choose from with the exception of the injured Dean Cracknell Manager Gary King recalled Shane Tolley, Ben Farrell, Matt Nolan and Ed Adjei and from the start the side looked every inch the likelier victors.

themselves. With Jay Davies and man of the match Lewis Hilliard running the midfield and back after suspension Ben Farrell mopping up most of the half-hearted Tiverton attacks it seemed certain that goals would come but the visitors defended effectively and with goalkeeper Michal Searle looking inspired the voluble home fans were frustrated. Hilliard was at the centre of everything for St Neots sending first minute free kick over the bar, sending an angled shot just beyond the far post and sending a second free kick into the side netting in the first 15 minutes. Tiverton’s first real effort was a cross from Ed Palmer diverted over his own cross bar by a St Neots defender. The visitors’ physical approach earned two of their defenders’ early cautions and after 31 minutes Davies got up to head down a Hilliard cross to Adjei whose fierce volley brought an outstanding save from Searle. In a rare Tiverton attack Palmer curled a shot wide of goal and as half time approached both Gavin Hoyte and Tolley had efforts just off target. After 42 minutes the visitors were lucky not to concede when Palmer sliced a Hilliard cross into the arms of his surprised goal keeper but a minute later the best move of the first half produced the goal. Farrell dispossessed an opponent and ran at the defence picking out Shane Tolley and his delightful flick freed Hilliard whose low shot beat the keeper.

The first half was at times embarrassingly one way with Tiverton managing just two direct shots on goal whilst St Neots played the ball around patiently and had little trouble in creating chances for

That single goal should have boosted St Neots, but it was Tiverton who started the second half the stronger. Shane Krac shot over the bar when well-placed and a long shot by Marcus Marin was

comfortably saved by Abbey. Nolan was brought down when going clear another caution for Palmer and then Dan Smith ran at the St Neots defence unchallenged but shot over the bar. St Neots domination was now broken but they still looked defensively sound and substitutions by both sides did little for the game other than to give Tiverton and more attacking profile. With 17 minutes left a Nolan flick on found Tolley and driven wide he left the ball for substitute Jake Woolley whose shot found the side netting and six minutes later a snap shot by Martin through a packed defence brought the brilliant save from Abbey. Had that counted St Neots would have been left with just eleven minutes to find a match wining goal but after the let off they finished strongly with Farrell releasing Davies whose shot was a foot too high and Nolan beating the offside trap but losing control when he should have made the game safe. Four minutes added time with Tiverton desperate for a goal meant a nervy finish, but St Neots deserved their victory celebrated with their ecstatic fans.

St Neots: Abbey, Spence, Lee, Farrell, Frater, Hoyte, Hilliard, Davies, Nolan, Tolley, Adjei Subs: Woolley (for Adjei 70 mins), Ford (for Tolley 81 mins), Thomas (for Nolan 90+2 mins), Ferrari and Swan. Attendance: 522 Referee: Paul Kelly (Maidstone)

1ST TEAM REPORT WEYMOUTH

3

Southern League Premier Division The sending off of St Neots skipper Luke Knight after 31 minutes for an alleged handball proved to be the catalyst for an unfortunate away defeat at in-form Weymouth. The incident came when a close- range shot was driven at him on the goal line following a corner and although the Referee waved play on, an eagle-eyed Assistant flagged for the infringement. Play was then brought back, and double punishment imposed as a converted penalty kick was awarded which put the home side in a commanding position. This condemned the visitors to playing for the final hour with ten men and despite a heroic rearguard performance including an equalizing goal the day was sadly spoiled when Weymouth scored twice in the last five minutes to snatch all three points. It was an undeserved blow for Matt Clements understrength team short of several players. Lewis Irwin was unwell, David Bridges unavailable, and Scott Sinclair sidelined by the injury sustained at St Ives, so Jack Bradshaw and Dion Sembie-Ferris were restored to the side after missing the Senior Cup tie. The defeat was no disgrace and the small contingent of visiting supporters showed their appreciation of the team effort at the final whistle. In many ways it was a strange game because in the first half hour apart from two off target shots by the home side there was little meaningful goalmouth action. Both defenses were dominant and neither goalkeeper

ST NEOTS TOWN had a shot to save in that opening half hour. However, the dismissal seemed to bring the match to life after St Neots keeper Finlay Iron had gone full length to tip away a Calvin Brooks shot to concede the corner. Leading league scorer Brandon Goodship rapped home the penalty despite Iron guessing correctly and getting his fingertips to the well struck spot kick. The keeper was then again in action diving bravely at the feet of Harry Baker and he then produced a stunning full length save to deny Goodship a second goal. Two minutes before the break overlapping full back Callum Buckley was given too much space to go clear on goal but he sent his shot high over the bar before St Neots ended the half with a flourish. Kyron Wiltshire produced a delightful cross field pass to find the unmarked Tom Wood who sent St Neots first real shot over the bar and then Taylor Parr had a header saved from a Johnny Herd corner. If Weymouth thought the second half against ten men was going to be easy they had a shock. Wood saw a shot blocked as the visitors took the game to their opponents and Dion Sembie-Ferris was upended as he made for goal. After 63 minutes Wiltshire again became the provider as he set up Jack Bradshaw whose shot was too high and then St Neots suffered a blow as acting skipper Taylor Parr was injured, although able to continue after treatment. Then after a spell of pressure St Neots were rewarded with an equalizing goal. Substitute Stefan Broccoli on for Sembie-

1 Ferris was hauled down 25 yards from goal and Jack Bradshaw bent a low free kick around the defensive wall and beyond the despairing dive of goalkeeper Will Dennis. Weymouth responded with a series of attacking moves in which Iron produced the save of the match to deny Harry Baker and Brooks saw a net bound shot deflected wide. Eventually the numeric unbalance paid off five minutes from time when a Weymouth free kick was flicked on at the near post by Jake McCarthy and Stephane Zubar restored the home sides’ lead with a diving close range header. Then three minutes into added time salt was rubbed in the wound when a deflected shot fell to substitute Jordan Ngaio who completed the scoring.

St Neots: Iron, Bradshaw, Herd, Knight, McDevitt, Parr, SembieFerris, Wood, Shariff, Wiltshire, Williams Subs: Broccoli (for Sembie-Ferris 55 mins), O’Malley (for Williams 80 mins) and Dean Cards: Knight (RED – 31 mins), Wiltshire (Y – 61 mins) Goals: Bradshaw (71 mins) Referee: Robert Cockle (Bristol) Attendance: 653
