In this edition, we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Sheringham Football Club and we hope you enjoy our hospitality this afternoon on what will be your first ever visit to Rowley Park”.

Well the Cup games keep on coming thick and fast at this time of the season. Last Saturday’s convincing 3-0 win over Edgware and Kingsbury saw us in the hat for the Emirates FA Cup First Round Qualifying draw and we were rewarded for our efforts with another home tie, this time against Barking FC who ply their trade in the Essex Senior League Premier Division (Step 5 - The same as ourselves) . This game will be played here at the Premier Plus Stadium next weekend - Saturday 31st August - 3pm Kick Off Personally, I look at the FA Cup as a bit of a bonus as realistically, we arent going to make it to the Home of Football, but if we can entertain our supporters and make a little bit of money to put into the club coffers along the weay, then happy days. Promotion, Fa Vase then FA Cup in that order so today’s game is of vital importance as the FA Vase is a competition that gives clubs at our level a rewalistic chance of a day out at Wembley if all goes well. Just lookmat fellow UCL club, Newport Pagnell Town, who, insiode rhe last four seasons, have made two visits, winning the competition on their first visit and finishing runners up on the second. In fact, if you ask Kieran Barnes nicely, i’m sure he will tell you all about his sublime strike for the Swans when they won the Vase.

Don’t forget that we do actuallyhave a League game coming up, on Bank Holiday Monday, when we make the short trip up the A1 to visit Yaxley FC and we will be stoopong off at The Greystones Public House, Sawtry, on the way back and it would be nice to have your company there too as we support a business that has chosen to support ourselves As always, get behind the lads from the first whistle.

Sheringham are a side like ourselves who I am sure will have ambitions of going deep into this competition. They have already shown with two FA Cup wins they are capable of winning important cup matches“.

With only 1 league game played so far it’s really hard to judge where they are at, but I know they are a good side for this level and will be aiming for promotion this season. We played the likes of Fakenham and Thetford last season and both were tough opponents, so shows the standard of that league is extremely high.

This is now back to back cup weeks and last week saw us produce an outstanding performance against a dangerous opposition Edgware and Kingsbury. They never stopped running and they were always a threat in the game but a 3-0 win was the least we deserved on chances created. The FA Cup draw gives us another home tie against a step 5 club in Barking, both sides will believe it’s a draw they can win and will go into the game with the belief and hope that progression into the second round against potential step 2 sides brings.

Back to todays game and this year’s FA Vase campaign, last year we got knocked out on penalties by finalists Great Wakering Rovers and I’ll admit, watching their run with great envy, as on the day there wasn’t anything in it.

However, when it comes to cup football it’s all about fine lines and small margins and we have to make sure on the day we don’t leave anything to chance and we are ready for all eventualities.

In the end it was a very routine victory for the visitors and a place in the next round. However, Manager Jon Taylor was quick to admit that his sides’ overall performance had been far from perfect. ‘We seem to be very slow starters’ he said, ‘and that is something I shall have to work on as a matter of urgency.’ The first half hour produced very little significant action from either side but once St Neots got into their stride, they outclassed their inexperienced hosts and only two or three excellent saves

by Andy Laurie late in the game prevented the scoreline becoming an embarrassment.

In the first real attack Damian Nelson shot into the side netting for Somersham, whilst at the other end both Paul Bloss and Barry Dellar failed to find the target when well placed. Steve Kuhne then shot just wide with an acrobatic overhead kick, but it was to be the St Neots skipper who opened the scoring with the first shot on target in the 31st minute. The goal came from a neat move on the left involving Paul Bloss and Steve Wareham and when the ball was crossed Kuhne had lots of space to angle a header beyond the reach of Laurie. That seemed to boost the visitors’ confidence and before the break Chris Bailey cleared off the line from Steve Wareham. he second half saw St Neots back to their more usual form and they dominated the game from that point on. Paul Bloss should have increased the lead after robbing Bailey on the edge of the area but shot disappointingly wide whilst in a rare Somersham attack Ashley English shot wide.

St Neots reorganised their side by adding Lee Bearman in an attacking role and taking off defender Damian Matthews. Bearman’s introduction produced the second goal within ninety seconds as he outpaced Bailey and crossed for Steve Kuhne to head his second goal of the game. At that point Bailey twisted his ankle and had to be replaced and within ten minutes both sides had introduced their quota of substitutes. St Neots keeper Jack Rashid was then injured when he misjudged a lob by Adam Clayton and collided with a post as the ball just cleared the bar and then the bar at the other end kept out a headed by Mike Newbury with Laurie beaten. The game was then lit up by two stunning strikes by Saints substitute striker Grant Chapman.

He had replaced skipper Kuhne, and another substitute Danny Bartley produced the cross from which he swept home the third goal and four minutes later it was 4-0. A free kick by Ronnie Fortune was not cleared and Chapman hit an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net. It was then left to Laurie to deny Fortune and Bartley further goals but St Neots will have been delighted to lay the ghost of their Senior Cup Final defeat by Somersham two and a half years ago the previous time the two had met.

Seasons Past - With John Walker This Edition Focuses on Season 1973/74

This is another in the series of highlighting one of our final seasons at Shortsands to depict both the highs and the lows in the recent proud history of the Club. This was ground-breaking because it was the season that we returned to the UCL after a four seasons spell in the Eastern Counties League. We celebrated by finishing fifth in the final league table behind Kempston Rovers and the Lincolnshire trio of Holbeach, Stamford and Spalding.

We never scored more than two goals in a home league match.

We only recorded three league ‘doubles’.

We bowed out of the FA Cup in an away midweek replay at Gravesend who were then riding high in the Southern League.

We finished with two trophies in our cabinet – the Hunts Senior Cup and the Hinchingbrooke Cup. Leading scorers were Barry Steele (19 goals), David Price (12 goals) and Neil Rawlings (10 goals).

The Manager was Terry Reedman who had requested the transfer back from the ECL after four seasons away from the UCL.

Year formed: 1897 Chairman: Kristian Gleave Club Website: www.sheringhamfc.pitchero.com GOOD AFTERNOON AND A VERY WARM WELCOME TO THE PREMIER PLUS STADIUM TO FIRST TIME VISITORS SHERINGHAM IN THE FA VASE Like our lads our visitors have made a great start in FA competition this season. In the FA Cup they have seen off two sides from their own league both of whom brag a good record in National competition. In the extra-preliminary round, they entertained Woodbridge Town winning by the odd goal in three and then on the road just last Saturday in the preliminary round they won 3-1 at Dereham Town – and that was Dereham’s first defeat in four games this season! Last Monday’s draw saw then given a First Qualifying Round tie away at Step Four Witham Town who are members of the Isthmian League Division One North.

However, enough about the FA Cup, today our two sides will have their focus on the FA Vase as we bid to progress in the other National competition. Last season after a first qualifying round bye our lads entertained Thetford Town winning a thriller 5-3 on penalties after a close 0-0 draw. Then in the next round we entertained Great Wakering Rovers, and another draw ensued (2-2) but this time we were beaten 4-2 on penalties and our opponents went on all the way to feature in the Vase Final at Wembley where they were beaten by Romford.

Sheringham have had a slow start to their league season having played just once so far and losing 1-0 away at Hadleigh. Last season they finished 14th in the final league table winning ten and drawing six of the 36 matches. Having been Thurlow Nunn Division One North champions in 2021/22 they impressed at the higher level finishing 7th in their first season at Step Five.

St Neots sauntered in the next round of the FA Cup with a solid if less than convincing victory over their Cherry Red Combined Counties visitors. There never looked like being an upset for the home side once they had opened the scoring after just four minutes, but Manager Cameron Mawer would have liked to have seen some more positive finishing against a visiting side that had little to offer in attack. Edgware keeper Alfie Langford was impressive in keeping St Neots at bay especially in the first half although on several occasions St Neots made it easy for him with some careless finishing. However, the home club will be happy to bank the £1,444 prize money and move on to the next round in a fortnight. There were three team changes for the home side. Recent signing Dan Walker was cup tied and both Murphy Culkin and Sam Willis were unavailable for selection, so Lil Francisco was handed his debut with Charlie Bowen and Harvey Williams both recalled to the side.

From the first whistle St Neots looked comfortably in control with Harvey Williams firing narrowly wide in the first attack. They after just four minutes the lively Williams was upended as he darted into the penalty area and from the penalty spot Kieran Barnes opened the scoring. A well struck free kick by Dammy Nickels five minutes later flew narrowly over the bar and then after 11 minutes the visitors’ managed their first attack but Richard Acheampong’s shot was comfortably saved. Barnes then shot over the bar as St Neots continued to dictate play and both Charlie Bowen and Connor Furlong had shots well saved by busy visiting keeper Alfie Langford. From a St Neots corner a well-placed Nathan George header was tipped over the bar at full stretch and then Barnes sent a free kick over the bar. In a rare breakaway attack for the visiting side Jordan Payne headed a Dan Taylor free kick over the home crossbar and on the stroke of half time St Neots doubled their advantage when Charlie Bowen rose to power a header into the roof of the net from a Barnes free kick. In added time Carlos Bain might have pulled a goal back, but he shot wide when well placed.

John Walker's Match Report EDGWARE & KINGSBURY (H) 17-09-2024 At the start of the second half Williams set up Barnes but the visiting keeper dived to his right to parry the well struck shot, and a defender cleared.

Williams was again the provider with a whipped in cross, but Robbie Parker glanced his header over the bar and then Williams shot wide after neat play by Lil Francisco. Jordan Brown and Danny Baulk then replaced the two wide players and Carlos Bain, the most impressive visiting player, saw his rising shot blocked by a defender. Midway through the second half a third St Neots goal effectively put the outcome of the match beyond doubt. It was the second of the match and the fourth of the season for the busy Kieran Barnes who was perfectly placed to latch on to Jordan Brown’s pull back from the bye line to give the keeper no chance. Edgware responded by totally reshaping their side with four substitutions, but it had little effect on a match kept well under control by the home side. A brave save by Langford at the feet of Baulk kept the scoreline to reasonable proportions as St Neots moved to their third match in this season’s FA Cup competition.

Opponent Spotlight SHERINGHAM FC

Formed in 1897, Sheringham joined the North Norfolk & Norwich Junior League, and soon enough a local landowner offered them a ground just off Holt Road for the bargain rent of just £5 a year. Back then, derby matches against neighbours Cromer often attracted crowds of more than 3,000, with 'football special' trains put on between the two towns.

The Club stepped up a level when they were elected to the Norfolk & Suffolk League in 1921, and a year later they built a new 200-seater stand to host their growing crowds – but Sheringham rarely challenged at the top until the 1950s, when they achieved two third-place finishes, followed by a title win in 1957-58. In 1964 the league restructured as the Anglian Combination, and in 1970 “the Shannocks” followed their previous year’s runners-up position with top spot in the Premier Division, earning them the Sterry Cup. But all was not well off the pitch at Holt Road – the Council-owned ground was much in demand for housing, and its spectator facilities were beginning to show their age.

A deal was done in 1988, and it would be a long eight years playing at the local High School until Sheringham had a home of their own again. Thankfully, when the new Council-built sports ground at Weybourne Road finally opened, the facilities were just what the football club needed – and their fortunes improved on the pitch too.

Three consecutive promotions between 2003 and 2005 returned the club to the Premier Division. In 2008 the Shannocks became the first Anglian Combination team to reach the final of the Norfolk Senior Cup in 17 years, thanks to two stoppage-time goals in a dramatic 4-3 semi- final win at Dereham. “After the winner, everyone was just running round like headless chickens,” said manager John Kowalyk afterwards.

Despite a valiant effort on their big night at Carrow Road, opponents Wroxham, two tiers above Sheringham in the pyramid, prevailed 3-1. But a year later they tasted success again, winning the Sterry Cup for the second time.

The Club lost their Premier Division status in 2015 but earned promotion back to the Premier Division in 2018. In 2019 the club won its 3rd Sterry Cup title, after a run in the second half of the season where the team only dropped 2 points from January.

The Club was accepted into the Eastern Counties league for the first time in our history due to winning the Anglian Combination. The first season was curtailed in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and we finished 7th in the league. Manager Chris Wigger and coach Darren Eadie then left the club to join Step 3 club Leiston FC as joint managers. Senior player Matt Halliday was then approached to take on the manager's job to lead the team into the 2020-21 season.

Opponent Spotlight SHERINGHAM FC

The Club entered the FA Vase competition for the first time in 2020, and after a memorable 2-0 win against Premier Division side Newmarket Town, were beaten by Walsham le Willows. The 2020-21 season was curtailed due to COVID-19, at the time we were in 5th place in the league. The 2021-22 season saw us enter the FA Vase for the 2nd time, only to fall to defeat to Norfolk rivals Thetford Town in a 4-0 loss. The team recovered and after a 14-match winning streak won the First Division North title, beating Harleston Town to the finishing line which went down to the very last day of the season.

Our first campaign in the Premier Division in the 2022/23 season saw us enter the FA Cup for the first time in 66 years. We reached the Second Qualifying round which equalled our best ever run in the competition. After beating March Town, and Fakenham Town (after a replay) we overcame the odds to beat higher-league Lowestoft Town 1-0 at Crown Meadow. Our reward was a trip to Step 3 side Needham Market, where we ended up losing 2-0 despite a heroic fight. We reached the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Vase, which was a new record, losing on penalties to St Panteleimon of the Spartan League. In March, Matt Halliday left the club and was replaced by joint managers Jon Abbott and Lewis Plowman. The final league position of 7th place was a magnificent achievement in our first season at the level.

The team came 14th in the 2023/24 season.

PLAYER PROFILES SHERINGHAM FC

Denham Oliver Agile young goalkeeper, comfortable with the ball at his feet and with excellent shot- stopping ability. Joined the club from Kirkley & Pakefield and reached 100 games for the club last season.

Shane Cox The club's captain came through the club's first crop of U18s players and has performed consistently and with quality, leading the back line, whilst showing incredible dedication and loyalty to the Shannocks.

Ted Henman Ted is a current student at Norwich CSF, and has represented the county in various age groups at youth level. A tenacious full back who can also play in midfield, has made a promising start to his Sheringham career.

Archie Galley A midfielder who came through the youth system at Sheringham before a spell at Wroxham. A versatile defender or midfielder with bags of ability.

Jamie Nelson Experienced player who made his Shannocks debut at 16 and is a Sheringham lad through and through. Always gives his all to the cause.

Spencer Cawcutt Attacker who joined from Dereham Town, having previously played for Mulbarton and Diss Town. Can operate anywhere across the forward line, has plenty of pace, and is strong on the ball.

Nel Lemos Midfielder who joined from Dussindale and Hellesdon last season, and has previously played for Norwich United and Harleston Town. Quick, strong on the ball and a great engine.

Ronnie Blois Striker A centre forward who joined the Shannocks after top-scoring in the Thurlow Nunn youth league whilst still at high school, Ronnie has great potential as a goalscorer in the men's game. A great learner, with natural centre forward insticts.

Alfie Bell Young defender who has transitioned from junior to senior football with ease. A North Norfolk lad, who has been coached by the management since a young age, Alfie is a front- foot defender, with good game understanding.

Alex Brasero Alex joined in the second part of last season from Step 4 side Wroxham. An attacking technical player, with great physical strength, Alex will be looking to contribute to goals and assists this season.

Adam Waller Exciting fullback Adam joins from Dussindale, where he spent the end of last season. Adam is an athletic fullback who fits the type of profile the club are looking for.

Zak Cork Zak joins from Wroxham, where he spent last season playing for their reserves in the Anglian Combination . Younger brother of ex midfielder Liam, Zak is a technically gifted midfielder who we as a club are looking forward to supporting this season.

PLAYER PROFILES SHERINGHAM FC

George Metcalf George joins the club after a successful season at Wroxham where he won their U18 league. An old fashioned CB, with a great desire to defend.

Charlie Marshall Charlie has joined this season from Dussindale. Charlie is a young midfielder who has experience of Step 4 with Dereham and is a player the management team have been after since the start of last season.

Ryan Perry Ryan joins after spending last season at East Halring in the Anglian Combination. An experienced CF, who will offer us something different from our other attacking options.

Charlie Abbs U18 Captain Charlie is a left sided Centre half who joins the senior squad this season after gaining experience last season at Aylsham in the Anglian Combination. An excellent character and leader, one the club is looking forward to supporting.

Luke Allen U18 midfielder Luke is a box to box midfielder who has both the physical and technical attributes to really affect games. Another we look forward to supporting in his second season with us.

Maksym Arnautov U18 GK Maksym will be in his first season with the club having come through the Norwich Community Sports Foundation pathway. An excellent shot stopper and all round great character.

Connor Gaskin Connor is a new signing this season having joined the club from North Walsham in the Anglian Combination, where he will stay dual registered. A young CF who knows where the goal is and another young player the club is looking to support in his first season at step 5.

Archie Gilmore U18 wide player Archie is now going into his second season with the club having broke into the first team towards the back end of last season. Archie will be looking to progress further this season.

Joe Henman The youngest member of the squad, Joe is the younger brother of Ted Henman. An all action CM, Joe has a great work ethic and attitude and we at the club are looking forward to seeing him develop.

Ru McIntyre U18 attacking player Ru, broke into the team early last season with a last minute winner away at Brantham. An excellent character, who possesses great speed and athleticism. Ru will be looking to kick on this season.

Jack Oakley Combative U18 midfielder who like others broke into the team at the end of last season. Jack is another who possesses a great mindset.

Josh White U18 fullback Josh comes back into the senior squad having spent last season on dual registration at Norwich Ceyms in the Anglian Combination where he won their player of the season award. Josh has excellent defensive attributes and can play anywhere across the back 3 and 4.
