Welcome to all from Worthing FC. We hope everyone connected with their club has a safe journey home.

loyal supporters did last week at Hungerford with several of the new players commenting on that support.

We may be short on numbers, but as long as the players show the desire that they’ve given over the last few games we will still have a chance in all the games we play.

It seems ages since we last played at home and certainly a lot has happened. Today, more than ever, we will need to draw on every reserve of character we have. Considering the difficultly of the fixtures we have faced in the early part of the season, coupled with integrating new players and a horrific injury / unavailability list - the players have shown tremendous courage and character to continue to grind out results over this period.

The Hungerford fixture away from home is always one any team are happy with a point from.

Today we need your help.

But an injury time strike from Jamie Anton was well deserved and a great point was gained.

We need you to get behind the players and be our 12th man. (You actually might even be our only option as a 12th man!). We need you to help the players get another 10% each out of all of them - something the PAGE 04 /

To do that last week with seven players missing, felt like a win. To do it after being stuck on a motorway for 2 hours and arriving at 1530 and kicking off just 20 mins later - felt like two wins! Especially after clawing ourselves back into the game, only to see the home side edge in front with minutes remaining.

On Tuesday in the FA Cup replay, we had an additional two players unavailable taking the tally to nine missing and an early injury to Matt Mitchell-King made matters harder.

Youngsters Luis Viera (pictured) had his first start and Dan Hobbs his first taste this season and both contributed brilliantly to a win in difficult circumstances. Ben Burton also made his debut, but the character of the players was excellent to see as they dug out the result in very difficult circumstances.

In terms of injuries, you will be delighted to know that Remy Gordon and Drew Roberts have been running this week. Lee Clarke is due an operation next week and hopefully Nathan Frater and Isaac Galliford would’ve recovered from illness this week. Josh Beech who did well on his debut last week is cup tied but will be available for Monday’s match, as will Brett Longden who is serving the last of a three game suspension.

Matt Mitchell - King will probably be a couple of weeks but loan signing Ryan Horne from Cambridge United should be available.

F A CUP PRELIMINARY ROUND (2/SEPTEMBER/2006)

St Neots 2- 2 Brackley Town St Neots confounded expectations by producing their best performance so far this season to draw with higher graded Brackley Town and earn a midweek FA Cup replay.

It was a game largely spoiled by the wind but great credit is due to both sets of players for their perseverance in the extreme conditions.

St Neots played the first half with wind advantage and it was in this period where all the goals and most of the notable action occurred. The second half proved more sterile with St Neots defending with great determination and they could even have sneaked a win when Gary walker appeared to be denied a justifiable penalty kick with twelve minutes remaining. With lynch pin Jon Hoggett out with a hamstring injury Steve Kuhne chose to move back into defence and bring in Ashley Deverall playing him in a withdrawn midfield role. With five in midfield St Neots looked capable of restricting the Brackley attacking moves but this left Gary Walker as a lone front runner.

Regardless of this St Neots had the first two real chances and after Deverall had shot over the

bar the hosts took the lead after 12 minutes. Gary Walker set up the move with a shrewd pass inside the final defender and Mark Franklin sprinted through to score with a crisp shot.

However the lead lasted just 40 seconds for Brackley hit back when Steve Kuhne misjudged a defensive header and the visitors levelled with a freak goal as a shot from Tom Winters going well wide hit a swirl of wind and curved around the helpless Martin Patching to deflect in off the far post. Brackley seemed buoyed by this and Nicky Hurst had to clear off the line from Robbie Beard and Elliott Sandy brought a sharp save from Patching.

On the break visiting keeper Richard Knight saved full length from Gary Walker but nine minutes before the break Brackley crept ahead when Patching pushed a snap shot from Les Hines on to a post and Robbie Beard followed up to tap in the rebound.

Back came St Neots and five minutes later equalised with the best goal of the games as Scott Grant delivered a flighted cross to the head of Gary Walker who finished off well to send the sides

in all square at the break.

Matt Endersby volleyed over the bar but it was Brackley who had the better of the early part of the second half with Craig Farley going close and substitute Matt Murphy twice testing Patching.

With twelve minutes left the hard working Gary Walker burst into the area and looked to be baulked

by Martin Brown but the Referee waved away penalty appeals and the remainder of the game saw the visitors on top.

Murphy and Farley were both thwarted by saves by Patching and in injury time from a Hines corner Murphy won the ball but headed against the crossbar.

St Neots overall performance fully justified their second chance in midweek.

A feisty Bank Holiday meeting of these neighbours will probably be best remembered for the two red cards and seven yellow issue by Referee Alistair Wilson in a game that was never dirty.

Almost all the bookings were for niggly offences but the two sendings off were straight reds that will result in three match bans for the perpetrators. St Neots will prefer to remember the match for a solid performance which deservedly yielded three valuable points and a tenth well taken goal for Tom Meechan who it is believed has become the first St Neots player ever to score ten league goals before the end of August. There was also a first goal for the hard working Ryan Hawkins who has played the perfect support role for his strike partner.

Biggleswade started the day seventh in the table after their best ever start to a Premier Division season but after going down to ten men they rarely threatened except fort two missed second half chances by substitute Tony Burnett.

Biggleswade made the better start and both Ian Rees and Shane Hill both shot wide after some good approach play. St Neots fielding the same starting line-up for the third consecutive match found it difficult to penetrate the visiting defence and Biggleswade might have gone ahead after 15 minutes when Ryan Frater headed down a corner to Ian Rees who blazed his shot high over the bar. Danny Guy then made an important save pushing a close range shot by Sam Merson for a corner after 18 mins but a minute later the game changed its complexion.

Brett Longden picked up a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Callum Lewis and St Neots responded positively moving to three in defence and pushing forward with greater determination. From that point on in the first half they looked the better side with Tom Meechan and Nathan Frater going close before Tom Ward saw a powerful header from an Isaac Galliford corner deflect off a defender for another corner after half an hour. Then five minutes later the ten men went in front as Meechan freed Ryan Hawkins with a deft flick and he finished well into the corner of the net. Three minutes later numerical parity was restored when former St Neots defender Ryan Frater kicked out at his brother and also received a red card for violent conduct. This did little for the visitors’ confidence who might have had a second player dismissed on the stroke of half time when another former Saint Jay Davies made a dangerous two footed lunge at Jack Wilkinson but got away with a booking.

The second half started where the first half had left off with St Neots in the ascendancy with a Galliford cross cleared off the line for a corner by Connor Roberts with his goalkeeper out of position.Then after 64 minutes Matt Mitchel-King rose high above the Biggleswade defence to knock down a cross and goal poacher Tom Meechan was on hand to direct the ball past the goalkeeper.

Biggleswade tried hard to respond to this second setback sending on two substitutes one of whom Tony Burnett should have pulled a goal back when he wasted two chances in the 75th minute.

First he was played clear of the defence but he delayed his shot allowing Gay to rush out to block and then he was presented with a free header inside the six yards box but he put the ball wide.

However they were the only real second half chances for the visitors who seemed to wilt as the match wore on. Meantime St Neots carved out a couple of good chances to make their victory more resounding.

With Adan Tann on as a late substitute St Neots reverted to four in defence to preserve their comfortable lead and after 82 minutes from an in-swinging Hawkins corner Tom Ward headed just the wrong side of a post and then just before his late substitution Meechan rounded the final defender but saw the ball taken off his toes by the advancing goalkeeper.

The three points lifted St Neots back to sixth place in the table in readiness for their next match away to league leaders Chippenham Town.

TOM SCORES AGAIN!

Welcome to the Officials, Players and Supporters of Worthing FC to the Premier Plus Stadium.

I hope you have a good day with us and enjoy our hospitality.

Unfortunately I will still be away for this fixture as I’m still at my home in Florida, but of course kicking every single ball via our wonderful supporters twitter feed.

Well what a tense couple of weeks we have had and the FA Cup reprieve was in my opinion certainly justified (I have gone into detail on that situation in my recent Chairman’s view published on our web site). In that article I wanted to let Gary Wilson and all other club secretary’s that we are all behind them and appreciate everything they all do for their clubs.

Two great draws away from home while I have been away will I can assure you be great results come the end of the season.

The away Tilbury was not THEdraw MACK IS to BACK! so great but wow did we make up PAGE 12 /

for it in the replayed match where I looked at all of the twitter feeds with excitement mid air from New York to Orlando nearly jumping out of my seat, they let you have wifi on planes in the USA. Unfortunately the plane landed about sixty minutes in so I had to turn my mobile off. Not very nice of them landing while we were just thirty minutes from the end of the match.

Seeing the result when I was waiting for our cases to come through made me seriously happy for all involved.

A crazy end to the game of which I’m still trying to get my head around.

That’s the FA Cup I suppose so many twists and turns who ever the teams involved, and I doubt if todays match will be any different and just as exciting.

David does have some serious injury problems within the squad and is looking to add more players he has on his radar. I have always said anything can happen in the Southern league and all teams can beat each other or drop points.

Having played five out of the top eight teams so far this season our home match last Tuesday against Dunstable had to be postponed because of the FA Cup tie.

Well as usual results were different and all but one went our way.

Our next two matches are again against teams above us so lets see where we are after those games. I thought that this league would sort its self out after about ten games but the way its going it might be twenty games before we see who are the real candidates for the top five.

I do though believe that many of the top teams are near as good as they can get without having to strengthen by investing in better players. Us I think we have plenty more to give from this group of players and we will get better as the season wears on. And by the way we have last seasons golden boot winner Drew Roberts and our out standing young winger Remy Gordon to come back, they will be like signing two major players. So get behind the players, as I know you will and don’t forget that we have only lost two league games since last January, the best record in the league.

I will be looking at the twitter feed today as everything happens and lets hope we can get the result we want and be in the draw on Monday because that’s a great excitement waiting to see who you get the next round.

Starting his non-league career with Baldock Town Kevin Mark Phillips (born 25 July 1973) is a retired English professional footballer and a First Team Coach at Leicester City.

Phillips was the Premier League top scorer in the 1999–2000 season with 30 goals for Sunderland, a tally which won him the European Golden Shoe. He remains the only Englishman to win the trophy.

He also had spells at Watford, Southampton, Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion, Birmingham City, Blackpool, Crystal Palace and Leicester City.

Phillips was born in Hitchin, Hertfordshire. He signed for non league Baldock Town in the summer of 1991.

At Baldock Town, he was initially played as a right back until he lost his place to our own Chairmans son Jamie Kearns who was recovering from injury whilst at Cambridge United Kevin was for most of that season on the substitutes bench until until as they say “the money ran out” Phillips was very loyal and soon found himself promoted back into the first team but playing up

front through an injury crises. Glen Rhoder the then Watford manager spotted Kevin and took him on for an initial £10,000, plus four additional payments of £5,000. Phillips main job at that time was working in the local Tescos.

Not bad for a lad who was at the time stacking shelves at Tescos.

He quickly showed his eye for goals and moved on to Sunderland where he score 113 goals in just 208 games.

A smashing lad who never gave up and could have quite easily missed as they say the boat if he had not been so patient at Baldock Town.

Kevin has scored goals for who ever he has played for and also represented England on eight occasions.

THE STARS WHO GOT US TO STEP THREE Kieran joined us in our UCL Premier Division title year making his debut away at Desborough on 26 October 2010.

He never really managed to hold down a regular first choice berth making seventeen starts and being used a further fourteen times as a substitute. He scored seven goals including two in his second start – a KO Cup fixture against ON Chenecks.

He made his Southern League debut as a substitute in our opening match of the 2011/12 season but only featured twice more – both as a substitute before moving on.

Yellows boss Reid recovering after burst blood vessel (Who would be a football manager) Warrington Town manager Shaun Reid is recovering and in “good form” after being taken ill on the touchline during his side’s 2-1 win at Trafford in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League on Bank Holiday Monday.

He burst a burst blood vessel in his upper neck and was rushed to the Salford Royal Hospital by ambulance after the game. After being kept in overnight for observation and treatment, he was discharged in the morning.

Ryman League provide update on Farnborough The Appeal Board of the Ryman League met on Thursday and heard a charge against Farnborough FC that it had varied the terms of the CVA and failed to provide notice of the application to the League.

The Board decided that the appropriate sanction was to apply Rule 14 B.1 so that the Club will be relegated by one Step unless by the

time of the 2016 AGM it has paid £1,254,263 to the creditors. The Club is therefore free to commence its fixtures on Saturday 29 August at home to Lewes FC. Farnborough released a short statement saying “The Club can confirm it has been given the green light to start its fixtures immediately. The penalty for the two charges revolves around previous genuine creditors of the now amended CVA. The Club will await the formal penalty in writing before commenting further and is just concentrating on getting on with football.

Frome Town appoint former star as Foster’s successor Frome Town FC have announced that Nick Bunyard has been appointed as first team manager.

The former Town player, who was part of Simon White’s squad that clinched the Toolstation Division One title back in 2002, played 48 times for the Robins before moves to Chippenham Town and Paulton Rovers. His playing career ended prematurely through a long standing injury and moved into management with Paulton Rovers. He guided them to promotion to the Southern Premier Division in May 2014 after beating Merthyr Town in the play-off final and establishing them in their first season in the division as one of the toughest

sides to beat. He resigned at the end of the season citing various reasons and has spent the summer with his family and taking in football at several grounds in the opening weeks of this campaign. Chairman Jeremy Alderman said of the new appointment: “We are delighted that Nick has agreed to join us, he is full of enthusiasm and can see what we are trying to do at Frome - we didn’t need to sell the Club to him and we now need to look forward and try to win back some of the supporters who have drifted away over the last few years. Nick will be given the time he needs to get things right and the most important thing is for everybody to get behind the new management team on Saturday when we play host to Kettering Town. It’s a new start for everybody, the players included”.

With eighteen minutes remaining in the National League game between Welling United and Tranmere Rovers there was an incident involving Rovers defender Ritchie Sutton and

Welling’s Sahr Kabba. Sutton was dismissed for striking Kabba with an elbow but Tranmere insisted no contact was made and Kabba intentionally went down to get Sutton sent off. Upon appeal Rovers were proven correct with the use of video technology and Kabba is now the first player to have been handed a three match ban by The Football Association for intentionally feigning injury to get an opposing player sent off. I compliment The Football Association on taking action in this matter, however it again highlights that when referees are showing a player a red card to a player they have a responsibility to be accurate in their decision making process.

Why did not one of the four officials on this game detect the actions Kabba and deal with him on the field of play. Sutton suffered the pain of having to take that long embarrassing walk to the dressing room and his team were down to ten men I am a great supporter of the introduction of a video referee at the top level of the game. Sat in front of a bank of television screens with instant play back and in direct contact with the team of officials on the field of play. The referee could call for confirmation that he is correct in sending off a player. I am sure that the sending off of Sutton could have been avoided.The player feigning injury Kabba would have received an instant yellow card So players be aware of this action by The Football

Farsley Celtic start eBay auction for matchday sponsorship Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Farsley Celtic are selling the matchday sponsorship package for their home game against leaders Northwich Victoria on eBay! With Celtic hosting the First Division North pace-setters on Saturday 19 September, officials decided to offer the sponsorship to the highest bidder over the weekend before making it available on the online auction site on Monday.

Farsley Celtic’s head of media Robert Winterbottom is hoping the idea will encourage people who wouldn’t normally consider sponsoring a game to give it a go and help them boost the club’s finances.

He said: “We have decided to take the unusual step of auctioning our match sponsorship against Northwich on eBay! We are open for bidding and open to all offers!”

KIngstonian John Fenwick, chairman of Ryman League Premier Division club Kingstonian, has issued a statement updating the situation regarding their Kingsmeadow ground.

Although confidentiality restricts the content in some areas, Fenwick started by discussing AFC Wimbledon`s position: “They have submitted revised planning applications. These are being considered by Merton Council. This may result in approval or may be ‘sent up’ to another authority for comment. A conclusion may not be arrived at this year. “AFC Dons Trust has yet to seek approval to sell Kingsmeadow from their members. These meetings are due to take place in the last week of September. “Contracts for the sale of Kingsmeadow to Chelsea have yet to be finally agreed and signed. “Our target date to move from Kingsmeadow is the summer of 2017. This is subject to ongoing discussions with AFC Wimbledon and their own planning and building works schedule. “During this year we have vigorously continued the process of discussions with many other relevant officials, including the previous Kingston MP, our Head of Council Kevin Davies and other councillors.

This will be worthing’s third outing in the competition this season and they had to wait until Tuesday to know where they travels would take them.

A very special welcome our visitors this afternoon. They are the players, officials and supporters of Worthing FC who come for a second qualifying round fixture in the FA Cup competition. Worthing play at Step Four in the Ryman League Division One South and are currently thirteenth in that Division with five wins and four defeats in nine completed matches. Their most recent victory was last Saturday away at Carshalton Athletic.

Geographically Worthing is a seaside resort on the Sussex coast and their football team is in good form winning four of its last five matches.

This will be their third FA Cup match this season having defeated Walton & Hersham 2-0 at home in the Preliminary Qualifying Round and Thamesmead Town 2-1 at home in the last round. Over the years they have established reputation as Cup fighters having reached Round Two

of the FA Cup in 1982/83, the Fourth Round of the FA Trophy in 2003/04 and much earlier in their history the quarter-final of the FA Amateur Cup in 1907/08. Their nickname ‘The Rebels’ was established in 1921 when they resigned from the West Sussex League in protest at a rule change. We hope the players and supporters will have enjoyed their outing to Cambridgeshire today and have a safe trip home this evening.

CLUB HISTORY The club was formed as Worthing Association Football Club (a name that lasted until 1899) in February 1886 and played friendlies and Sussex Senior Cup ties for the first few years of their existence. In 1896 the club became founding members of the West Sussex Football League, joining the Senior Division. During their time in the West Sussex league they were league champions on seven occasions. In May 1900 the

club absorbed local rivals Worthing Athletic and a year later moved to its current home, then known as the Sports Ground, now as Woodside Road. In 1905 another rival team, Worthing Rovers, was also absorbed.

The club’s intriguing nickname of “The Rebels” dates from when it resigned from the West Sussex League over a rule change, prior to becoming a founder member of the Sussex County League in 1920.

Previously Worthing had been known as “The Mackerel Men”: a reference to the fish on the club crest. In 1920 Worthing became founder members of the Sussex County League, where once again they won eight league titles, in fact in the twenty seasons prior to World War II they only finished outside the top four on two occasions. In 1948–49 Worthing joined the Corinthian League but met with little success. In 1963 the Corinthian League disbanded and most of its clubs joined the newly

created Athenian League Division One, where Worthing won promotion at the first attempt, although after three seasons in the Premier Division, two successive relegations saw them drop to Division 2.

followed two years later by a return to the Premier Division under John Robson, although Worthing finished bottom in their first season back in the Premier Division and were to remain in Division One until 2004 when the reorganisation of the English football league system saw them moved back to the Premier Division. They were relegated at the end of the 2006–07 season.

The club then reached the playoffs under manager Alan Pook two seasons in a row, losing both matches without scoring a goal.

Unknown young manager, Simon Colbran then took the helm and soon became a fans’ favourite as the Rebels topped the league for much of autumn and winter. Despite several budget cuts, the Rebels finished third and narrowly missed out in the play offs at home to Godalming. Former Brighton & Hove Albion player Adam Hinshelwood

was appointed Worthing manager on December 2013 and lost his first game away at Burgess Hill 4–1. In January 2015 the playing budget at the club was completely cut and its debts revealed to be around £200,000. The future of the club looked in serious doubt until March 2015 when local football enthusiast George Dowell became the majority shareholder in the club with plans to invest in various areas. On 10 June 2015, Hinshelwood resigned from the club to take up a full time coaching post at Brighton & Hove Albion. He was replaced by assistant manager Jon Meeney and 29-yearold defender Gary Elphick. Last season Worthing finished 6th out of 24 in the Ryman League South narrowly missing out on a place in the play offs.

After managing a return to the top division, Worthing joined the Isthmian League in 1977, initially in Division Two, but by 1983 they had reached the Premier Division under manager Barry Lloyd and in fact finished as runners-up in 1983–84 and 1984–85.

After Lloyd’s departure to Brighton & Hove Albion, however, the club soon slipped back down to Division Two, finishing bottom of Division One in the 1990–91 season with only 10 points and having conceded a huge 157 goals. Former Northern Ireland international Gerry Armstrong was appointed manager in 1991 and in 1992–93 led the club to promotion back to Division One, which was

THE REBELS GARY ELPHICK (JOINT-MANAGER/ CENTRE-HALF) Started his career at Brighton & Hove Albion where, after rising through the ranks, he made his senior debut against Reading alongside younger brother, Tommy. After this though first team opportunities became limited and, after loan spells at Eastbourne Borough and Aldershot Town he was released at the end of the 2005-2006 season.

Signed for Conference new boys St Albans City where he won England C honours before moving on to Havant & Waterlooville in December 2007.

Despite only joining them mid-way through the season, he still picked up the club’s player of the month award twice. By May 2009, he had returned to Sussex with Eastbourne Borough, this time on a permanent basis. In January 2012, Eastleigh became his next port of call before a change of Manager saw him complete a transfer to Tonbridge Angels in October that year. Pitched up at Lewes in the summer of 2014 before being appointed to the hot seat at Worthing a year later.

JON MEENEY (JOINT-MANAGER) Made his managerial debut with East Preston Reserves before being appointed to the coaching staff at The Photronix Stadium under former Boss, Chris White. Left briefly, after a couple of seasons, only to be brought back to the club by Adam Hinshelwood.

Worked his way up from Coach to Assistant Manager until he made it to the top job in the summer of 2015. An infectious character whose endless enthusiasm and incredible desire to succeed immediately rubs off on all those around him. A full time Coach by day at The Brighton & Hove Albion Academy, “Jonno” has also spent time over the last two close seasons broadening his footballing horizons by helping to bring along the next generation in Finland.

Followed that up by opening his Woodside Road account in the very next game against Burgess Hill Town. Made his Sussex debut against The Royal Navy a couple of weeks later.

JACK FAGAN (GOALKEEPER) Highly rated youngster who has graduated from the youth set-up. Still only seventeen, he made his debut in the 2-2 draw at Hythe Town on the 20th April 2013, where he was only beaten by two worldies. Gained further first team experience at County League runners-up East Preston in 2012-13.

Earned his first call-up to the Senior Sussex Squad the following season.

MATT HURLEY (CENTRE-HALF) Moved from Whitehawk in 2011 and has previously played for Eastbourne Borough, Shoreham, Southwick and Burgess Hill Town. Very assured at the back but also known for his occasional lung-busting forward runs, emphasised by his goal at Peacehaven & Telscombe in The Brighton Charity Cup in March 2012.

BRANNON O’NEILL (DEFENDER/ MIDFIELDER) A rampaging number eight who also made a confident debut at Peacehaven & Telscombe in The Robert Dyas Cup in October 2013.

Includes both Horsham and Horsham YMCA as well as Crawley Town, Three Bridges, Crawley Down Gatwick, East Grinstead and Ringmer amongst his former clubs. Signed from St Francis Rangers on the evening of Sunday 29th September so that he could play at Piddinghoe Avenue.

COREY HEATH (CENTRE-HALF) Made his name in the successful Chichester City youth team of 2011-12, where he picked up a Sussex County Youth League Championship winners medal, making his first team debut in April that season. Joined the club from local Ryman Premier rivals Bognor Regis Town, where he was dual-signed for the following campaign after playing for them as a second half substitute in a pre-season friendly at Woodside Road in August 2013. Featured for the first time in a Worthing shirt at Eastbourne Town the following January and added some much needed height to The Rebel’s backline.

WILL HENDON (RIGHT-BACK) Australian-born defender who made his Rebels debut alongside Corey at The Saffrons, just three days after his eighteenth birthday! Confidently tucked home his first goal for us at home to Walton Casuals on 8th February 2014.

Made the short journey from Ryman Premier Lewes, where he made his first team debut in a Sussex Senior Cup tie in November 2012. Graduated from The Rook’s youth team after starting out as an under-eighteen at Eastbourne Town. Spent three months - from June to September 2012 - in Finland, plying his trade for TPS. Equally comfortable at left-back and unlucky when he was released by The Albion.

OMAR BUGIEL (MIDFIELDER/ FORWARD) German-born attacker who started out as a youth teamer at TSV 1860 Munich before he emigrated to England. Joins the club via Bognor Regis Town, Burgess Hill Town and Selsey. Tall, battling, and skillful player who turned twenty eleven days prior to his Worthing debut at Eastbourne Town at the start of the year. Headed home his first goal for The Reds against Walton Casuals on 8th February 2014 at Woodside Road.

RYAN QUIRKE (MIDFIELDER) Under -21 graduate who made a steady debut at Hythe Town on the last Saturday before Christmas 2014. He then swiftly made his first start at The Photronix Stadium in the Boxing Dayish derby against unbeaten local rivals, Burgess Hill Town. Becomes the second generation of his family to wear the red of Worthing, after Dad, Brendan, was a member of Barry Lloyd’s all conquering side of the mid-eighties. Became a hit on youtube when he scored a wonder goal at Guernsey on the final day of the 2014-15 season.

JAZ RANCE (FORWARD) Originally made his name in The Rebel’s youth team and then moved up to senior football at Lancing in 2013-’14, where his goalscoring exploits in the reserves saw him promoted to the first eleven. Ended his time at Culver Road with the young player of the year award.

On his return to The Photronix Stadium, Jaz made his first team debut for us in The Robert Dyas Cup tie with Horsham in October 2014, as a substitute, before starting in a red shirt for the first time in The Sussex Senior Cup at Gorings Mead against the same opponents, a few short weeks later.

HARVEY SPARKS ( LEFT-BACK) Pacy youngster who made his First Team debut under then Manager, Chris White at Peacehaven & Telscombe in The Brighton Charity Cup back in March 2012 as a second - half substitute.

Handed his first start on the final day of the 2011/2012 season at home to Crawley Down and scored his maiden senior goal in February 2014 against Newhaven in The Sussex Senior Cup. BEN POPE (FORWARD) Released by Brighton & Hove Albion, sixteen-yearold Ben was on the First Team bench against Walton Casuals - on February 8th 2014- despite having only met his new teammates on the morning of the game! After frantic work by the Ground Staff to get the game on, they were rewarded with not only victory but a debut goal from Ben within five minutes of coming on!

MATT AXELL (MIDFIELDER/LEFTBACK) Came through the ranks at East Preston before moving to Arundel midway through the 2005-’06 season.

Started the following campaign at Wick but returned to Mill Road a year later where he picked up a Sussex County

League runners - up medal. Back at “E.P.” by 2011-’12 he went on to win the Division Two League and Cup Double, The County League Championship and played in the Semi-Finals of the FA Vase. (Ironically, a game moved to The Photronix Stadium due to a waterlogged pitch at The Lashmar).Had a brief spell here at Woodside Road last season before returning to East Preston and finishing at Eastbourne Town.

HARRY SMITH (WINGER) Blessed with terrific pace, Harry returns to us from Ryman League neighbours Horsham.

Started the previous campaign in The Hornet’s first team but, after finding himself on the bench and subsequently being frustrated at a lack of game time under a new Manager, he came back to the Photronix Stadium. A former youth team player at both Woodside Road and Gorings Mead, Harry scored for the Under -21’s, in their league cup victory against Thamesmead Town, before announcing his second coming to the first team as a substitute at Chipstead on 10th February 2015.

RIKKI BANKS (GOALKEEPER) A big man and a big character who returns to Worthing for a second spell.

Originally with Crystal Palace before moving on to Crawley Town, Worthing and Lewes, where, in 2008, he won Conference South and was named player of the year in The Rooks only season in the top flight of non-league football. Stayed at that level when he moved to Eastbourne Borough in 2010, spending the last two months of 2011’12 on loan at Hendon. Stayed in North London when subsequently signing for Wealdstone and had spent the last two campaigns back at Lewes.

RYAN MOREY (WINGER) Recruited during pre-season after first team opportunities became limited at Bognor Regis Town. Shows tremendous pace down the flank and made his Rebel’s debut in the historic first game on the new 3G pitch, against Northampton Town on July 7th 2015.

Rose through the ranks at Nyewood Lane and also gained valuable experience of men’s football at Selsey and Pagham.

MATT PIPER (MIDFIELDER/ DEFENDER) A former Brighton & Hove Albion scholar who re-joined Worthing in the summer of 2011. Used mainly as a right-back but can also play further

forward. Previously played for Bognor Regis Town and Burgess Hill Town.

Spent the latter part of last season turning out for East Preston and now dons a red shirt as Player-Coach.

STEVE METCALF (DEFENDER) Often seen at left-back but, can play anywhere across the back four and also known to venture forward and pop up with a few goals each season.

Originally with Lewes, “Mets” has spent a number of seasons at Woodside Road over the years. With spells away at Horsham YMCA,where he scored four headers on his debut and played under future Rebels Manager, Chris White, who brought him back here for his second stint in a red shirt. Played the past couple of seasons at Peacehaven and Telscombe, winning Ryman League Division One South and Sussex Senior Cup with the team from Piddinghoe Avenue.

TONY NWACHUKWU (WINGER/ FORWARD) Worked his way through the ranks at Horsham until he made his first team debut in October 2008 in an FA Trophy tie against Sittingbourne, ironically here, at Woodside Road, during The Hornet’s ground sharing season of 2008-’09! A pacy and tricky wide player also known for his somersault goal celebration and impressive record from the penalty spot. Made more than two hundred appearances during his time at Queen Street and Gorings Mead. Nigerian-born Tony has also worn the strips of Tooting & Mitcham United and Horsham YMCA in the past.

CALLUM OVERTON (FORWARD/ WINGER) Arrived on 17th August 2015 from Southern Combination League side Selsey, where he remains dualsigned. Made his debut in the Robert Dyas League Cup/Alan Turvey Trophy tie a couple of days later against local rivals, Burgess Hill Town, where he scored in the penalty shoot-out. Started out as a youngster with Brighton and Hove Albion and rejected a trial at Manchester City as well as interest from West Bromwich Albion, before joining boyhood team AFC Wimbledon, enjoying a brief loan spell at Bognor Regis Town last term. Upon his release from The Dons, after two years at Kingsmeadow, he spent part of preseason at Millwall.

A game which was most definitely not for the feint hearted or those of a nervous disposition Good afternoon everyone and welcome to The Premier Plus Stadium, home of St Neots Town Football Club and the Mick George Academy, for today’s Emirates FA Cup Second Round Qualifying tie.

Today we extend a very warm welcome to the players, officials and of course the travelling supporters of Worthing FC and we hope you all enjoy your brief visit to St Neots before returning safely to Sussex later this evening.

Well, if I were to say the past couple of weeks have been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster, that would be a bit of an understatement and as an unpaid volunteer myself, I felt the anguish and pain our Secretary was feeling due to the administrative error which was the cause of the problems however, our victory down at Tilbury on Tuesday evening ensured that the whole episode had a happy ending. I can honestly say that in all the years watching the Saints, even in cup finals and games where promotion etc has been riding on the outcome, I have never felt so physically sick and mentally drained during a game which was most definitely not for the feint hearted or those of a nervous disposition.

Maybe it wasn’t just me feeling the added ‘edge’ to the tie with many of the local support feeling aggrieved that we had not been ejected from the competition and our support feeling that we had been given another chance to finish a job which we should have done in the first game. Our lads were cheered on by I

think I’m correct in saying, thirty-one hardy souls who, for many, were making the second trip to Essex themselves. Only thirty-one you may say but out of a crowd of ninetyseven and midweek too, a bloody good show in my opinion and it was greatly appreciated by all.

Back to the game itself and it really was a game of two halves.

The first half ended with us two goals to the good, Danny Gay saving a penalty and us looking fairly comfortable and the half time chatter was all about how we would go on and comfortably finish the job. How wrong could we be? Two minutes into the second period we were down to ten men and after a spell of pressure likened to a boxer pinned to the ropes and taking a real good hiding, we conceded and in all honesty, our boys looked like they were hanging on for dear life as wave after wave of attack followed and I really couldn’t see us seeing the ninety minutes out.

Then, out of nowhere, Lady Luck poked her head from wherever she’s been hiding for the past god knows how long and within a blink of her eye, the hosts were reduced to NINE men. From this point on, there was only going to be one winner as we went on to score three more times and secure our place in today’s tie. I really can’t put into words how hard all the lads worked during that ninety minutes but I’m sure they stretched every sinew, sweated blood and probably covered every inch of grass on that pitch for the cause and a home tie today was a very just reward. The two hour trip home was superb with lots of noise and laughter with both players and supporters engaged and an unscheduled stop at a couple of Tilbury’s late night top eating establishments saw the day end on a very happy, if shattering note. A good performance from the 12th Man would be greatly appreciated today and please remember, support the boys for the full ninety minutes and be patient if things don’t appear to be going to plan, Tuesday once again showed how a game can be turned on its head inside sixty seconds.

Mid Week Action: Division One Central

Leaders Chippenham Town struck thirteen minutes from time to secure a 1-0 home win over Merthyr Town while Cirencester Town scored three times after the interval to defeat visiting Chesham United 3-0 to move into second place. Leamington who were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Weymouth, Hungerford Town, two ahead at the break, were pegged back just after the hour mark and had to settle for a point from a 3-3 home draw when St Neots Town levelled again in the fourth minute of time added on. Poole Town moved into third place when a first half strike gave them a 1-0 success at Biggleswade Town, Hitchin Town, ahead at half time, conceded five goals after the break to crash to a 5-1 defeat at Histon while Dorchester Town, two up at the interval, moved into the top four with a 3-2 home victory against Stratford Town.

Mid Week Action: Premier Division

A goal after just six minutes was enough to give AFC Rushden & Diamonds a 1-0 home win against third placed Aylesbury but they lost top spot to Chalfont St Peter who scored twice in each half to complete a resounding 4-0 victory at Aylesbury United.

St Ives Town were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Godalming Town and Northwood, a goal down at the interval, crashed to a 4-1 defeat at Beaconsfield SYCOB who leapfrogged their visitors in the table. Kings Langley went behind in the opening minute and, although levelling nine minutes from time, slipped to a 2-1 home defeat when Arlesey Town secured their first win of the season five minutes before the end.

Cambridge City equalised three minutes before half time to secure a point from a 1-1 draw at Bideford. Redditch United scored in each half to defeat visiting Kings Lynn Town 2-0. Kettering Town secured a 1-0 victory at Paulton Rovers with a twelfth minute strike but Slough Town, two down in the opening seven minutes, could only reply four minutes from the end and were defeated 2-1 at Bedworth United who moved out of bottom place. In the day’s other game, Dunstable Town, two ahead at half time, had to survive a fight back before running out 3-2 winners over visiting Frome

On Monday Hitchin Town, behind in the twenty-first minute, equalised from a penalty on the stroke of half time and went ahead immediately after the break to set up a 3-1 home victory over Bedworth United.

On Tuesday, leaders Chippenham town went behind after quarter of an hour at Weymouth but secured a 1-1 draw when they struck back on the stroke of half time.

Second in the table Cirencester Town, two down ten minutes into the second half, lost 2-1 at Stratford Town but Redditch United, ahead after seven minutes, won 2-0 at Slough Town and moved into third place replacing Poole Town who were held to a 0-0 draw by visiting Dorchester Town.

Hungerford Town took a second minute lead but, having conceded two goals in four second half minutes, needed a strike four minutes from time to secure a point from a 2-2 draw at Chesham United.

Hanwell Town scored just before the hour mark and doubled their lead eight minutes later to set up a 2-1home win against Bedford Town but Potters Bar Town took the lead for a second time three minutes before the interval to record a 2-1 home win over North Greenford United.

Leighton Town, behind in the opening minute but level at the break, went down 4-2 at Fleet Town.

MD’S VIEWS I’d like to start my programme notes by welcoming Worthing to the Premier Plus Stadium.

Not going to talk about the FA cup thingy because it’s all now been well documented and we need to move on.

Where do we start?

The Scholarship programme The Scholarship programme is starting to find its own shape and rhythm, at the time of writing these notes we are just coming to the end of our third week and thus far it’s been a fairly smooth transition from what we have had previously to what is now in place with Longsands and Ernulf. It’s important to again point out that these kids are getting the very best education that is on offer because they are still part of the schooling system it just happens to be delivered off site at a football club.

Primary School Key stage 1/2 PE support and after school clubs This is an area we are keen to grow. It makes good business sense to work with these schools and is a great opportunity for our scholars to gain valuable life skills.

Working with a football club is hugely beneficial to the school and more importantly the kids.

Classroom update Good news, the local parish meeting we attended on Tuesday evening could be described as a resounding success with full support from the committee. Their recommendation to the district council goes a long way to securing a big yes on our planning application.

Both myself and Iain felt pretty overwhelmed with the positive attitude towards the football club as a whole and it was made pretty clear to us that not only were the committee as excited as us they were also aware of some of the community based projects we have initiated and supported.

Academy I’m trying not to get to carried away with the academy teams because it’s a long season and we have to bear in mind that the three younger groups are playing up a year.

However that said the results so far have been way beyond our expectation. It should never stand still and should always look

We are also in the process of attaching a 30 unit leadership for sports award to this Primary school support. At present we deliver PE lessons three afternoons a week as well as three after school clubs.

In total we look after around 200 primary school kids.

Well done to all involved. At the top of the tree are the U18’s who’s performance against Bugbrook in the FA youth cup was outstanding. These are all 16 year old first year scholars so do not be surprised if they they have the odd blip against lads 2-3years older.

A commanding Centre Midfielder or Centre Back, Matt was playing Conference National level last year with Dartford before joining the last four months of our play off push. REDDITCH UNITED Our next away trip is our usual Monday night away game at “The Valley Stadium” the home of Redditch United.

Every season we seem to play Redditch both home and away mid week. Redditch had a great season last term where they narrowly missied out on a play off spot, they also have the distinction of being the only team last season to do the double over us winning both league fixtures. The Saints lost just two away fixtures last season against Weymouth and Redditch. Not such a great start for the The Reds but they are bound to improve under manager Liam Mcdonald. A very dangerious young team when they want to and this fixture always for some reason gives us a tough match. Let’s look for to reversing those results of last season.

St Neots travelled to play league leaders Chippenham in the hope of a victory that would keep them in the mix with the early season pacemakers.

In the event they had to settle for a point after conceding an early goal but they can feel hard done by being denied two fairly obvious penalties and a shot that rebounded from the woodwork.

All the early openings at both ends came from set pieces as an in swinging Hawkins free kick was half volleyed by an off balance Tom Ward wide of target with the keeper stranded.

The Wiltshire side are a much better unit than last season and although a fourth draw in eight matches may be disappointing this was probably a point won rather than two surrendered.

Chris Allen then had a real chance to extend the lead as he showed fine pace to go past the last defender before shooting badly wide.

There was just one change in the starting line up with Adam Tann preferred to Brett Longden who was on the bench at right back.

St Neots made a very positive start and looked to be cruelly denied a penalty in the very first minute when following an Isaac Galliford corner the ball bobbled around in the six yards box before a St Neots shot was clearly handled on a goal line but the Referee waved play on.

Ryan Hawkins then sent in a teasing cross from the right and with Tom Meechan waiting to pounce home keeper Kent Kauppinnen dived forward to claim the ball. However the bright start was quickly eradicated when Chippenham took the lead in their first attack after nine minutes.

Again the goal came from a corner swung in by Michael Pook and when the defence failed to clear James Guthrie dug out the ball from under his feet to score from close range.

After twenty minutes Nathan Frater got involved in a verbal exchange with the Referee after one of his colleagues was clearly fouled with the award of a free kick and he was booked for dissent and then Kaupinnen made a fine save at his near post from a narrow angled effort

by Meechan.

Guthrie was also yellow carded for a cynical tackle bringing down Hawkins from behind as he sped towards goal and the half ended with Matt Jones sending a free kick over the bar from a prominent position.

With Frater and Hawking switching roles up from St Neots looked dangerous on the break at the start of the second half and Frater shot wide when he should had levelled the scores after neat work by Meechan.

Chippenham then produced a good spell of attacking play that rendered several chances. A Greg Tindle header from a Pook corner was deflected wide of goal, Luke Ballinger fired the resultant corner

over the bar and Guthrie steered a free kick wide. St Neots needed to pep up their game and so on the hour Guy Mailancol was introduced replacing Isaac Galliford.

He was quickly in action returning a Hawkins corner to the far post where the unmarked Frater saw his header rebound from the woodwork.

Now St Neots began to press but home keeper Kauppinen dominated his penalty area collecting crosses and dealing with shots from Hawkins and Mat Mitchel-King. Danny Gay made a fine save with his legs to deny Ashan Holgate and then after 72 minutes Hawkins was wrestled to the ground but no penalty was given.

The perpetrator of the tackle Greg Tindle injured his back and was stretched off after a six minutes delay.

St Neots then had much the better of the last ten minutes and were rewarded seven minutes from time when Frater headed home a Mailancol cross with the home side clearly looking to waste time.

The draw was well deserved but St Neots must start to convert those draws into three points still trailing the league leaders by four points.

Whether it be Premier League, Football League or Non-League, one thing remains a constant in football news – managerial re-shuffles… and the last few weeks have been no different.

Gary Whild has left Kidderminster Harriers after five seasons at the club as assistant and manager, and Neil Aspin has moved on following a six-year stay at FC Halifax.

The National League’s bottom two sides made the difficult decision to pursue other options, acting on recent results and the clubs’ current league positions. These prolonged stints, in themselves, are an achievement and both were full of success. As assistant to Steve Burr, Whild led Kiddy to runners-up spot in 2012-13 and helped discover and develop big-money sales like Jamille Matt and Joe Lolley, while Aspin masterminded three promotions in his time at FC Halifax and sold on the likes of current England international Jamie Vardy, Lee Gregory and Scott Hogan for a near-£1m profit. But shorter tenures can often make the decision even tougher to make. However, in a results business something has to give.

Tim Dixon has left Hythe Town after a winless run of 10 games left them occupying a place in the Ryman Division One South relegation zone. Dixon may have spent just 16 months in the job, but waiting to ride out the storm can often be more of a risk than making a change.

Many will disagree with timing, personnel and other mitigating circumstances that come with running a football club, but attempting to turn things around can be crucial.

Recently, Paul Cox said goodbye to National League side Torquay United while Evo-Stik Division One South side, Loughbourough Dynamo, saw Lee Morris depart. But in these cases the reasons are different. The former Torquay boss left due to personal reasons, while Dynamo are looking for new leadership following circumstances out of their control.

Morris, who was in the hot-seat alongside Jason Maguire, has recently been handed a promotion in his coaching role at Derby County’s academy and splitting his time between the two was no longer feasible. Although Jason Maguire is to stay at the club for the foreseeable future, the unprecedented re-shuffle undoubtedly takes its toll. With Dynamo currently sitting precariously in 20th place in the table, a period of uncertainty was not part of the plan.

Unlike the Football League and Premier League, rumours are not always flying around about who might take the freshest job on offer.

Advertising the vacancy online is a method often used to thrust unknown, but qualified, applicants in the direction of Non-League clubs and, in turn, help to secure an appointment swiftly.

Doncaster Rovers, currently in League One, were heavily criticised for adopting the same approach on their own website in recent weeks.

But with Non-League unleashing a vast amount of talent, both on the pitch and in the dug-out, why shouldn’t these clubs adopt a new tactic to find their perfect match and quickly?

One thing is for sure: there will be plenty more movement in the dugouts as the season progresses but the results that follow are often the most intriguing.

Clubs either look to bounce back from the disappointment of the departure or push forward and change results – all with the spotlight on the new boss.
