From the Dugout With Manager Cameron Mawer Firstly, I’d like to welcome everyone connected with Newark Town to the Premier Plus Stadium today. We hope their players, staff, officials and supporters enjoy their visit and have a safe journey home afterwards.

Our last game saw us exit the FA Cup following a 4–0 defeat against Newmarket Town. The scoreline was disappointing and probably didn’t tell the full story of the game. It was 0–0 after 65 minutes and I felt we were very much in the tie. Unfortunately, we then conceded two goals from set plays which changed the game completely. From there we had to chase the game and take more risks to try and get ourselves back into it, which ultimately allowed Newmarket to add to the scoreline.

There were certainly positives to take from the first 65 minutes, especially against a good Step 4 side, but equally we have to learn from the way the game got away from us. Set plays are such an important part of football at this level and we have to be better in those moments.

Before that, we produced a brilliant performance to beat Peterborough FC 4–0 in the league. I thought the lads were excellent from start to finish and it was one of our most complete performances of the season so far. To score four goals and keep a clean sheet was really pleasing, but more importantly the intensity, togetherness and quality we showed throughout the game was exactly what we want to see from this group.

I’d also like to give a huge welcome to Ben Heath, who joins us from AFC Rushden & Diamonds. I want to thank everyone at Rushden & Diamonds for making the move so easy for Ben after such a long time at the club. To make 199 appearances for one club speaks volumes about Ben, both as a goalkeeper and as a person, and the service he has given them. To be able to bring in a goalkeeper with experience and pedigree from a higher level is huge for us, and we’re delighted to have him as part of the group.

Today we face a Newark Town side who come into the game in good form. After a mixed start, they have responded really well with back-to-back 3–1 wins against Leicester Nirvana and Deeping Rangers. Three wins from their opening four league games shows the challenge we face today, and we know we will need to be at our best.

With today being a cup competition, it also gives us an opportunity to utilise the squad. We’ve got a lot of football coming up and it’s important that everyone gets opportunities and is ready when called upon. We want competition for places throughout the group, and games like today give players the chance to come in, perform and show what they can bring to the team. At the same time, we want to progress in every competition we enter, so our approach and standards will remain exactly the same.

Finally, a huge thank you to the fantastic numbers who travelled to Newmarket on Saturday and got behind us throughout the game. The support was brilliant from start to finish and certainly didn’t go unnoticed by myself, the staff or the players.

We were disappointed that we couldn’t give you the result your support deserved, but to see so many of you make the journey and stay behind the team means a huge amount to everyone involved.

Club History St Neots Town Football Club, nicknamed ‘The Saints’ - St Neots Town was formed in 1879, simply as ‘St Neots’. Operating as an amateur side in its early years, the club tasted its first major success by becoming the inaugural winners of the Huntingdonshire Senior Cup in the 1888-89 season. They dominated local cup competitions around the turn of the century while playing in the Biggleswade & District League.

The club went through a couple of early name changes, becoming St Neots & District in 1924, and joining the Bedfordshire & District League (later the South Midlands League), which they won in 1932- 33. They made their first foray into the United Counties League (UCL) in 1936 before the outbreak of World War II disrupted regional football.

Post-War Eras and Name Changes (1950-1988) In 1949, the club became founder members of the Metropolitan League, winning a league and cup double in their very first season.

They officially settled on the name St Neots Town F.C. in 1951.

The late 1960s marked one of the most successful eras for the club:

FA Cup Run (1966-67): The Saints enjoyed their best-ever run in the FA Cup, reaching the First Round Proper, where they put up a valiant effort before falling 2-0 away to Walsall.

The Record Streak: By 1969, the club won the Huntingdonshire Senior Cup for a staggering 12th consecutive season, setting a historic record for senior cup wins in England.

League Double (1967-68): They rejoined the UCL and quickly claimed the Premier Division title and League Knockout Cup double.

However, the late 1980s brought severe hardship. In 1987, the owner of their long-term Shortsands Yard home sold the ground to developers. Forced to play on a borrowed works pitch and drowning in outstanding debt, the club was forced to completely disband in 1988.

Reformation and Modern Era (1990-Present) The club’s absence from football lasted only two seasons. In 1990, local investors stepped in to reform St Neots Town FC. Starting from scratch in the Huntingdonshire Junior League and playing on communal council pitches at Priory Park, the team won four consecutive titles to earn readmission into the UCL senior divisions by 1994.

The club climbed back up the non-league ladder, moving into their modern Rowley Park stadium in 2008. To signal their high ambitions, they even appointed former Northern Ireland internationals Steve Lomas and Michael Hughes to their management team in 2009, alongside former Fulham midfielder Sylvain Legwinski.

This ambition paid off with a dominant 2010- 11 season, breaking multiple league records en-route to winning the UCL Premier Division and initiating a rise through the Southern League systems. Following their championship campaign in the United Counties League Premier Division South, The Saints continue their journey up the English football pyramid.

Cameron Mawer was appointed First Team manager in May 2023 in first season suffered heartache in league play-off in UCL North Premier, to achieve promotion following season as champions, the progression back to step 4 & the Northern Premier League, Saints stay was short and were relegated back to UCL Premier South for upcoming season.

To day we welcome all the players, officials and supporters of Newark Town to the home of the Saints for this seasons league knockout cup 1st round draw.

In our last season in the United counties league we had been drawn against our visitors today and had a very competitive high scoring match after being in a good position during the match Somehow we Endeavoured to loose our way and the hosts came back with a storming finally 20 minutes to turn the game upside down and pip us to win through to next round .

We hope we can show another good account of ourselves today and push to be in the draw for the next round.

Cameron and the lads had a very challenging FA Cup last Saturday against a higher grade team in Newmarket Town After competing and showing a good account of our selves for 60 minutes ,Newmarket managed to break the deadlock and took further advantage in the final few minutes to secure a place in the next round .

Saints have started the season in a very positive fashion and Cameron and his talented squad know that consistency in performances and showing that winning attitude and finding a way to win on a regular basis will help us this season to stay in touch with the pacesetters and maintain our momentum and drive to be in a good position at the endgame.

GOOD AFTERNOON AND A WARM WELCOME TO NEWARK TOWN FC FOR THEIR FIRST EVER VISIT TO ST NEOTS We have some bitter-sweet memories of our former meeting with our visitors which coincidentally was in the same competition as that which we host today. A copy of that match report can be found elsewhere in the programme but suffice it to say that when we led 3-0 after just 49 minutes, we thought a place in the next round had been secured. However, our hosts had other ideas, and they came back to pulverise our lads with five unanswered goals to move into the next round of the competition. Newark Town finished fifth in the North Division of the GCE Hire Fleet UCL last season before beating Sherwood Colliery in the first play-off but losing to Grantham Town in the final in front of a record crowd.

Our record in the league cup competition since our relegation back from the higher level has been less than impressive. Defeat in the initial round by teams from the Northern Division of the UCL has been the order of the day with two successive away ties. In 2023/24 we travelled to Clipstone where we were beaten by five goals to two and the following season, we again conceded five goals at Newark Town but this time in unusual circumstances as outlined above. So today becomes the first home UCL league cup match since the 2010/11 season when we hosted Kings Lynn Town in a quarter final tie.

Back to our visitors who earlier this season made an early exit from the FA Cup beaten 4-0 at home by higher graded Wellingborough Town. Last season they recorded an excellent away victory in that competition beating Grantham Town by the odd goal in three. However in the next round they were beaten by the odd goal in five away at Rossington Main from Doncaster who play in the Northern Counties East League.

St Neots experienced the full range of emotions at Newark – knocked out of the League Cup in the preliminary round for the second successive season. For the first fifty-five minutes their performance was good as they racked up a three goals lead. However, it all went wrong just four minutes later and for the final thirty-five minutes of the match their overall performance was bad, and they returned home with an ugly 5-3 defeat knocked out of the KO Cup in consecutive seasons by sides from the North Division of the UCL. To lead 3-0 but then to concede five goals in just 35 minutes would be considered inconceivable had it just not happened.

Manager Cameron Mawer must now restore some confidence – especially in his defenders, with two important away league fixtures prior to the home FA Vase visit of Downham Town later in the month. The Manager had made three team changes with Dan Walker returning after being cup tied for the two FA Cup fixtures, Harvey Williams was back after injury and Lil Francisco was preferred at full back with Dammy Nickels, Dan Baulk and James Hatch making way.

It all began very promisingly with St Neots dominating the attacking play and keeping home keeper Josh Wilson in almost constant action. After a quarter of an hour Sam Willis won a corner which Dan Walker sent to the far post where Murphy Culkin got above the defence to nod in via the woodwork for his first goal of the season to put the visitors in control. The home keeper saved well from Walker and Rhys Thorpe whilst in a rare Newark sortie James Goff had to save bravely at the feet of Ryan Smith. The one -way traffic continued as both Walker and Thorpe were too high with their efforts from good approach play and then Wilson did well to rush from his line to save at the feet of Thorpe. Then four minutes into added time at the end of the half St Neots doubled their lead with a goal direct from an in swinging corner delivered by Dan Walker.

The second period also began well with St Neots extending their lead after just four minutes when a through ball past a square lying home defence freed Rhys Thorpe and this time with a one-on-one on the keeper he planted the ball into the far corner of the net. With that 3-0 lead it should have been a place in the next round for the visitors’, but much was to follow. Newark mounted their first response to St Neots domination just four minutes after the third St Neots goal when from a corner Luke Anderson was permitted an almost free header to reduce the deficit, and eight minutes later Newark were firmly back in the game when Sean Woolley sent a low free kick around the St Neots defensive wall and in at the far post. St Neots looked stunned, but worse was to follows because after 64 minutes a free kick was headed home by Sam Bartle with the St Neots defenders looking accusingly at each other as the scores were levelled. St Neots needed a positive response to regain some confidence, but it never came as the frustrated Rhys Thorpe was sin-binned after 76 minutes and Newark took the initiative sixty seconds later landing goal number four through Ryan Smith. Ragged St Neots conceded a fifth goal two minutes from time from Sam Wright to bring an end to a miserable afternoon.

Looking Back With Club President John Walker Another in a series of historical records looking back at our fortunes in a past season (both good and bad!)

ST NEOTS TOWN FC 2011/2012 SEASON This is another in the series of historical records, highlighting our recent spell in the Southern League depicting both the highs and the lows in the recent proud history of the Club. It was a very memorable season after achieving Step Four status, back-to-back league championships and subsequent promotions for the first time ever in our history. We took on relatively few new players giving those who had won promotion the chance to prove themselves at the higher level with seven players in the starting line-up of our first match having played 30+ matches for the club. However, the only new player in that first match to retain his place on a long-term basis was goalkeeper Michael Duggan. Our matchday attendances were up around 25% and our fan membership system took off. Slough were our main challengers for the title but after a 1-0 away victory at St Neots in front of a crowd of 1060 in early March, their challenge fell away, and we won the title by six points.

In the league we won five of our first six matches at Step Four – two at home and three away.

Goalscoring was again the main feature. We scored 115 league goals in 42 games including notable home victories over Aylesbury 9-3, North Greenford 8-0, and Chertsey 7-0.

Our outstanding defensive record (36 goals in 42 games) was thanks to goalkeeper Michael Duggan and defensive lynch pin Chris Hope, .In Cup competition we disappointingly lost in the FA Cup to lower graded Leicester side Thurnby Nirvana but won the Hinchingbrooke Cup (our last season permitted in that competition) beating Stotfold 6-0 in the final on our own ground.

The Reserve side switched to the Peterborough League but were unable to attract players and withdrew after just nine league matches.

Club Welfare With Club Welfare Officer Gemma Keech My name is Gemma Keech, and I am proud to be the Club Welfare Officer (CWO) at St Neots Town Football Club.

My role is to help create and maintain a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for everyone at the club. This includes overseeing safeguarding procedures, responding to any welfare concerns, and ensuring that all coaches and volunteers have current FA Criminal Record Checks (DBS) and up-to-date safeguarding training.

The welfare of every child, young person, and adult at risk involved with the club is my priority.

This covers players within our Development Teams, as well as Under-18 players who represent the First Team, Reserve Team, and Under-23s. I am the main point of contact for players, parents, carers, volunteers, and club members who have any safeguarding or welfare concerns relating to these groups.

I was appointed to this voluntary position by St Neots Town Football Club due to my professional background in Education and Children’s Social Care, where I developed extensive knowledge and experience in safeguarding and child protection.

I believe it is important to be approachable, supportive, and available to anyone who may need advice, guidance, or someone to talk to about a concern.

CLUB HISTORY Newark Town FC Newark Town CLUB HISTORY Newark FC was originally formed in 1868 playing in the Midland League. Changing its name to Newark Town in 1924, the club folded on the outbreak of World War II in 1939 after which Ransome & Marles became the town’s premier team. An attempt was made to resurrect the club in the 1970’s but after initial success the club once again went into limbo.

The club reformed in the 80’s entering a side in the Notts Imperial Youth League. A senior side was formed in 1994 with teams entering the MRA and the Grantham League. 1997 saw the club enter the Notts Football Alliance. After securing the Division One Championship in 2003/4 the club joined the CMFL entering the FA’s League Pyramid system. Joint managers Tony Joynes and Brett McNamara consolidated the club’s position in the Premier Division for a four year spell before the stewardship was handed over to Rupert Thomas. The introduction of the East Midlands Counties League and the consequent restructuring of the CMFL saw “the Blues” elevated to the Supreme Division in 2008. The club finished fifth in the first two campaigns and beat Louth Town to win the League Challenge Cup in 2009/10, a match described by Frank Harwood as the best cup final he had ever seen. The following season proved difficult but the club still managed a creditable eighth place finish.

After four years Rupert stood down and Tony Joynes returned, assisted by ex-Grantham Town stalwart Adrian Speed and one of the area’s top coaches Bob Shaw who also made a welcome return to his home town club. Their first season proved eventful with County and Floodlit Cup Semi-Finals before a chronic injury list took its toll. In 2012 the club went one better by reaching a cup final, losing to AFC Mansfield in the Floodlit Cup. Despite losing several long serving players at the start of 2013/14, and a switch to the Northern section Newark once more finished in fifth position, receiving the Sportsman’s trophy in the process. The following season saw an improvement of one place to fourth. At the end of the season Tony Joynes and Adrian Speed stood down and the job was taken by former Newark Flowserve manager Steven Venables. Venables walked out on the club after just six weeks, leaving Town in mid-July without a manager and just three of last season’s regular first team. The previous year’s reserve team managers Kevin O’Neill and Steve Crawford stepped into the breach and kept things going in difficult circumstances.

Tony Joynes returned for his third spell alongside the experienced Simon Daws who joined the Blues after eight seasons at Holwell Sports, as Town looked to bounce back. After a promising first half to the season results fell away and in the close season Simon departed to take up the manager’s job at Radcliffe Olympic with Tony also standing down. The next season and a half saw the club struggle at the wrong end of the table, but there was an immediate upturn in fortunes when Damon Parkinson joined the club in December 2018. With Luke Parsons alongside him, they steadied the ship.

Damon left to take the assistant manager’s job at Frickley Athletic leaving Luke to carry on the good work. season 2019/20 saw the club undefeated in 24 league matches, before that season and the following season was cancelled out

by Covid. Season 2021/22 saw the arrival of Nathan Arnold as first team Manager, and the team were CMFL North Champions, and gained promotion to Step 6.

After promotion Arnold moved across to Newark & Sherwood United, taking along with him his management team and coaching staff as well as 60% of the playing staff. Season 22/23 Luke Parsons returned to the club alongside Nick Andersen and Steven Venables and rebuilt around the core of lads that stayed from the previous season. Dave Issott who had played for Town in his career came in as coach and in our 1st season at step 6 saw us reach the playoff semi-final narrowly losing out to Birstall 3-2 away from home.

CLUB HISTORY Newark Town FC Newark Town CLUB HISTORY Season 23/24 saw the leadership of Luke continue alongside Dave Issott as his number 2. A few faces were added to the squad they already had and went one further by reaching the playoff final. Season 25/26 Luke continued at the helm with Neil Miller as his number 2. Adding some quality to the retained lads and were strong throughout the season. The season ended with us being losing finalists in the play-off. Newark Town are proud to be an FA Community Club

Racing for a Great Cause One of the biggest adventures of last season was competing in the Mascot Gold Cup at Wetherby Racecourse. I may not have brought home the trophy, but together we raised money for two fantastic children's charities—and that's a win in my book!

Out and About in the Community Football is about more than 90 minutes on a Saturday. I'm always looking for opportunities to visit local schools, community groups, charities and businesses to help spread the word about St Neots Town FC. Development Update With Development Lead Lee Keen Thurlow Nunn opener A really tough first game v St Ives the team hotly tipped to win the league after winning their respective division for the past 3 seasons.

A great start 3-1 win, Zak Thomson with the opener and Ryan Mcculough with the other 2. A strong controlled performance with Dylan smeathers and Jamie keen nullifying their threats out wide and max egan controlling the game from the middle and Adrian Pawlina owning our defensive line. Jack noonan with 2 assists on a night he could have scored 3.

Then we played Huntingdon on Saturday and followed up with an 8-0 win at home our first 3 points of the season.

Joe draper 3 Jake Holman 2 Ryan Mcculough 1 Jamie keen 1 Alex pereira 1 Really good from us to play so well Monday then back that up with a great team performance.

As good as this week has been more work to be done and more to come from this group.

Massive week this week, we play moulton in the cup then we host Harpenden town u18 in the fa youth cup on the 3rd of September.

I promise you will like this team how they play and how they try to win games.
