Good evening and welcome to the Premier Plus Stadium for tonight’s Hinchingbrooke Cup fixture against Netherton United. I’d also like to welcome their players, management team, officials and supporters to the club. Since my last programme notes, we’ve had a demanding run of three consecutive away fixtures, two matches against sides competing towards the top end of the table. We started with a disappointing 4-1 defeat at Moulton, where we fell below the standards we expect. However, the response from the players since that result has been positive. We followed that with a trip to May & Baker in the FA Vase, where a 2-2 draw saw us progress on penalties. We then travelled to Northampton ON Chenecks and picked up a point in another 2-2 draw, before an excellent 3-1 away victory at Desborough Town. Taking four points from those last two league games, both away from home against strong opposition, has been pleasing. We’ve also managed to progress in the FA Vase, which is another positive during a challenging period of fixtures.

Looking at the league table, we currently sit fifth with 24 points from 12 games, level on points with two of the sides above us. It’s a competitive league, with very little separating a number of teams, but we’re pleased to be in the mix at this stage of the season. There’s still a long way to go, and we know there is plenty more improvement to come from this group. I’m also delighted to welcome club legend Steve Kuhne back to St Neots Town as assistant manager. Steve was part of our successful league and cup-winning team during his previous spell at the club, and we share the same views and philosophy on how the game should be played. He knows the football club inside out, understands the standards we expect and brings a wealth of experience. I’m delighted to have him back in the dugout alongside me, and I’m looking forward to working together again. Tonight we turn our attention to the Hinchingbrooke Cup. With a busy schedule ahead, this fixture and our upcoming cup matches will give us an opportunity to utilise the full squad, provide valuable minutes to players and allow everyone the chance to stake a claim for a place in the team. We will also see some of our U18s and development squad involved with the first team, which is something I’m really pleased about. Lee Keen is doing a fantastic job working with these young players, and it’s important that we provide them with opportunities to experience senior football Having that pathway through to the first team is important for the future of the football club, and these cup fixtures provide a great opportunity for some of those lads to show what they can do. While we may make changes during these cup fixtures, our expectations and standards will remain exactly the same. Every game we play, we want to win.

We have some important league fixtures ahead, but our approach remains unchanged. We won’t get carried away with league positions or start looking too far into the future. It’s about taking each game as it comes, working hard and continuing to improve as a group. Finally, thank you to everyone who continues to support the players and staff, both home and away. Your backing is hugely appreciated, and hopefully we can give you another positive performance tonight.

Enjoy the game.

NETHERTON UNITED Year founded: 1992 Chairman: Wayne Wright Club Website: www.nethertonutd.com GOOD EVENING AND A WARM WELCOME TO NETHERTON UNITED FOR THEIR FIRST MEETING WITH ST NEOTS TOWN Netherton United was founded in 1992 but did not run an adult team until 1998. That was five years after they moved to their present 3G facility premises. They first joined the Hinchingbrooke Cup competition as long ago as the 2015/16 season – at the time a Step Seven club – since then playing at either Step Seven or Step Six. They have competed each season in the competition except for last season, so this is their eleventh season in the competition. Sadly, for them their best season was 2019/20 when they defeated Bourne Town at home and Arlesey Town away to reach the Final. However, COVID intervened and the competition was abandoned before the Final could be played. They have also defeated Deeping Rangers and Pinchbeck away from home in the second round of the competition in 2017 and 2019 respectively but otherwise have been first round casualties. They play in the Thurlow Nunn League Division One North and are currently fifth with 23 points from 13 matches – currently the second highest goalscoring team in that division. They are twice winners of the Peterborough Senior Cup competition in the 2017/18 and the 2025/26 seasons. They play in a 3G facility at The Grange in Peterborough. Previous meetings of our teams: none RECENT HISTORY – NETHERTON UNITED The club was established in 1992 as an under-12 team by Thorpe School caretaker Ray Branch, before turning to adult football in 1998 when the team could no longer play youth football. They joined the Peterborough & District League in 1998. They were members of Division Six in 2000–0 but moved up to Division Five when Division Six was disbanded at the end of the season. They were Division Five runnersup in 2001–02, earning promotion to Division Four. A third successive promotion was achieved following a third-place finish in Division Four the following season and was followed by a fourth promotion when the club finished fourth in Division Three in 2003–04. When the league was reduced to three first team divisions at the end of the 2004–05 season, Netherton were placed in Division One - a fifth successive promotion. The club were promoted to the Premier Division at the end of the 2009–10 season. In 2012–13 they were Premier Division runners-up, a feat repeated the following season, when they also won the Presidents Premier Shield. In 2014–15 the club won the league's Jack Hogg Charity Shield. They entered the FA Vase for the first time in the 2017–18 season, in which they went on to win the Premier Division title, the President's Shield and the Peterborough Senior Cup. The club played at Thorpe Primary School in Peterborough until 1993 when they moved to the Grange. The Grange now has a 3G facility which is the First Team pitch. John Walker

For the second time in less than a week St Neots found themselves behind in an away league match. Having scrambled back at ON Chenecks to take a point in midweek they went one better this time scoring three first half goals to return home with all three points. Hosts Desborough have had the best start to a season for some time returning from the South Midlands League to the UCL, but this defeat saw them tumble from third to seventh in a highly competitive division. Combined with other results St Neots moved up to fourth – level on points with the club above them, and just two points off the top of the table. It was a competitive contest with the visitors coming from behind, before confidently mopping up the counter attacking of the home side after the break with loan keeper Milai Perott producing two important saves as the host side took the initiative. It may prove to be a costly victory with two key players picking up injuries that could sideline them for a while. Back again after missing two matches MJ Muyembe lasted just 46 minutes before limping off, and a nasty injury sustained by Lewis Burgess is likely to see him out for at least a couple or three matches. The two team changes had seen Muyembe, and loan player Lloyd Asimoah replace Joe Sutton and Will Grocott, both of whom were on the bench. The visitors got off to a positive start with Scott Joseph seeing a lengthy effort gather by the home keeper, and the lively Connor Furlong seeing his effort blocked. At the other end Perott saved well when Abenu broke clear of the visiting defence. Furlong though he should have had a penalty when he was tripped by the Referee waved play on. The initial breakthrough came after 15 minutes when Nathan Burrows chased a loose ball to the bye line to cross for the unmarked Ben Fitzjohn to net from close range. St Neots seemed unfazed by this setback and after Robbie Parker had fired over the bar from a corner they levelled after25 minutes when MJ Muyembe was perfectly placed to net from close range. It then got even better for the visitors when two minutes later in their next attack, Connor Furlong rounded his marker to net from a narrow angle. Now the visitors looked in control and after 38 minutes they went further ahead when Lloyd Asamoah cut in from the left to add a third goal. Each side made an early substitution after the break with MJ Muyembe limping off with a recurrence of his former injury. Substitute Joe Sutton made an immediate impact seeing his first effort rebound from a post but the visitors with the wind behind them were beginning to look more threatening. St Neots then suffered another setback when influential full back Lewis Burgess was forced off with an injury with Will Grocott substituting. Midway through the half Connor Barnes was played clear of the home defence but driven wide by the advancing keeper he saw his shot go beyond the far post. Now the home side were in full cry looking for goals and the visiting defence did well under pressure to repel their better efforts. Harvey Henderson had to clear off the line with just nine minutes remaining, and home substitute Kye Little brought the save of the match from visiting keeper Perott as the visitors survived to return home with all three points.
