In this edition, we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Newport Pagnell Town Football Club and we hope you enjoy our hospitality this evening“.

Well here we go then, another nine months of highs and lows as the new season has begun...... for most teams.

I should be recapping on our scheduled season’s opener at GNG Oadby Town on Saturday afternoon but unfortunately this isn’t the case as the match referee quite rightly deemed the pitch unsafe and unplayable at 1:45pm as both penalty spots and the centre circle had been returfed in previous days but it hadn’t bedded in at all. So, after receiving the normal match confirmation email from the host club’s secretary midweek, we all think everything is hunky dory and we all made the seventy five mile trip to Leicestershire only to be greeted by the quite shocking state of the pitch. A very dissapointing situation to find ourselves in however it did give me the chance to divert across to this evening’s visitors, Newport Pagnell Town, as they entertained and overwhelmed a very young looking Yaxley FC side, winning 5-1 with a dominant second half performance.

I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome all our new signings who have joined us during the summer break and also thank everybody who has put their hands in their pockets to sponsor the lads and the management team, very much appreciated by the individuals and the club as a whole.

As you’ve now probably seen, we have moved away from the traditional quartered shirts this season for a more readily available style of shirt which will be available for supporters to buy (I’m led to believe there will be a selection of sizes for sale this evening at the game including childrens’ sizes.)

Boardroom Gossip From The Dugout With Chairman BarryCameron Cavilla With Manager Mawer " Firstly a huge welcome back to all the saints fans as we see the first competitive game since Coventry United visited The Premier Plus Stadium on 13th April. Secondly I’d like to welcome players, staff and officials of Newport Pagnell, a club who have seen Wembley twice in the last three years and I have no doubt will be up and around the promotion conversation come April“.

They are a side with a manager who is vastly experienced, with a group of players who have bags of quality and on their day can beat anyone.

Onto us now… the off season saw many challenges after a positive campaign last season. A lot of our players were sought after and were wanted by clubs at higher levels, luckily, due to the environment we create and the wonderful football club we have, including the fans and facilities, we managed to keep the majority of the squad and add some quality in key areas, in which I hope will give us that extra bit to improve us from last time out.

Preseason saw a good mix with some very competitive fixtures against clubs from step 3, 4 and 5. A trip to Bourne Town emulated a realistic league fixture away in the UCL, while testing fixtures against step 3 Hitchin and Biggleswade Town saw more physical tests which stressed us in different ways.

I’m delighted to welcome the new boys to the group Kieran Barnes, Sammy Wilis, Lil Francesco, Julinho Gomes, Danny Baulk and Scott Joseph. These players have added to the group on and off the pitch, but what we understand is the division is difficult. Last year showed us anybody on their day can beat anybody and it’s the most consistent teams that go on to be successful, so we are under no illusions just how hard it will be this year.

We are full of hope and expectation with the league, the FA Cup, the Vase and the local league cups to look forward to.

Every single Saints fan will need to play their part this season and continue to back this group as I have no doubt they will run through brick walls for you and your support.

Wel, as many would know our first away league fixture on Saturday at GNG Oadby turned in to a big debacle with the match officials calling off the game due to unsafe playing surface after the home team has had many months to get their pitch in good order for the opening game. With the first team squad and many travelling Saints supporters arriving early to soak up the atmosphere and then being told the Bad news that the GNG Oadby pitch was unfit to play with many other travelling Saints fans getting the message that game was off and having to turn around and find something different to entertain themselves on the first Saturday of the new season.

Newport pagnell enjoyed more success in getting there game on at home and enjoyed a comfortable win over Yaxley.

I feel certain he Cameron and his backroom staff are eager to hit the ground running and make their home advantage count this season in what should be an entertaining and competitive game.

So please give Cameron and his entertaining Squad a big cheer and give them that fantastic Saints support to help them on their way to hopefully what will be another great season for the Saints .

In the end this was a comfortable FA Cup debut victory for Manager John Taylor and another £1,000 in the bank for the club but at half time it looked as though a combination of the pitch, and the stubborn resistance of the home side would thwart St Neots’ ambitions.

Apart from one two minutes period just past the half hour when keeper Jack Rashid made two saves bordering on the magnificent there was little to enthuse about for the small crowd. It took both sides some time to come to terms with the bone hard dusty surface and neither keeper had a serious save to make in the opening half hour.Steve Wareham created St Neots best early chance when he burst between the two last defenders, but his weak shot only just reached the goal. At the other end the St Neots defence were once caught square, but Alex Clipstone’s shot was twice as high as the St Neots crossbar. Then after 33 minutes Steve Kuhne did get the ball in the net but he had fouled a defender but play then quickly switched to the other end when an exquisite lob by Keith Thomas caught Rashid off his line after a mistake by Damian Matthews but the keeper arched his back acrobatically to touch the ball over for a corner. From the corner United maintained the pressure and Russell Lawes cleared off the line before Thomas brought a brilliant reflex save from the St Neots custodian.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

That one extended incident was all the noteworthy action before the break and the visitors retuned after half time with their ears burning and looking far more focussed. They wrapped up their victory with two goals in a six minutes’ spell just after the restart.

Ronnie Fortune switched from striker to midfield provided the first with across pulled back to the edge of the area and Steve Wareham netted with a shot on the turn. Then Wareham turned provider with a cross into the six yards box that Steve Kuhne header comfortably into the net with Nick Foulkes inexplicably glued to his goal line.

St Neots now shed their inhibitions and produced some attractive football and introduced all three permitted substitutes but seldom looked like adding to their score. They did not need to.

Year founded: 1963 Chairman: Steve Handley Club Website: www.pitchero.com/newportpagnellfc GOOD EVENING AND A VERY WARMWELCOME TO THE PREMIER PLUS STADIUM TO OUR FIRST VISITORS THIS SEASON – NEWPORT PAGNELL Newport will be eager to go one better this season than last, when they finished just one place outside the end of season play-offs. They would also like to repeat their FA Vase heroics of 2022 and 2023 when they made two consecutive appearances at Wembley Stadium. However, today it is back to the bread and butter of league competition and out visitors will be aiming to repeat their performance here last season when they recorded a 3-0 victory. Later in the return match we fell to another defeat – by the only goal of the match – to give Pagnell only one of two league doubles over us last season.The other side that beat us home and away was champions Wellingborough Town who are now competing at Step Four.Below you will see that our two sides have been so evenly matches that it would be difficult to see who start as favourites this afternoon.

Our hectic pre-season programme saw us beaten just once in seven outings and that by a higher ranked side. Manager Cameron Mawer has added quality to his squad in the close season and we look forward to the new players making their mark. Pagnell opened their league programme with a visit from Yaxley and next Saturday they begin their FA Cup campaign with a visit by Essex Senior League side Ilford. In the League Cup first round next month they are to host Godmanchester Rovers.Our next scheduled home fixture is on 10th August when we host Rugby Borough in a league fixture.

Previous meetings of our teams: We played Newport Pagnell in eleven of the sixteen seasons between 1995/96 and 2010/11 during our spell in the UCL after our return to senior level. In addition, we faced then twice in the league KO Cup in the 1994/95 and 2003/04 seasons – both at home and winning both! Seasons Past - With John Walker This Edition Focuses on Season 2009/10

This is one of our series of historical records, highlighting this time another season at our Rowley Park stadium depicting both the highs and the lows in the recent proud history of the Club. The discovery of striker Paul Carey promised a bright future for the club under new Manager Chris Howell. Carey scored four goals on his debut in a 5-0 home demolition of Buckingham Town, and he went on to dominate the league scoring chart with 25 goals to the extent that the second highest league and cup scorers were Tony Davis and Darren Eadie with seven apiece. On the cups front the only competition in which we got beyond round two was the East Anglian Cup where we lost a third- round penalty shoot-out away at Ely City.

Our biggest League victory was a 7-3 win at home to Wellingborough Town and it was significant for it was the first match in which we boasted two hat tricks (Paul Carey and Sam Spencer) in the same game for more than thirty years since our first spell in the UCL (1966/1969) In the return game at Wellingborough we were beaten 4-0!

The Hinchingbrooke Cup Final at St Neots was a thriller with Stotfold winning the trophy for the first time, beating Barton Rovers 3-2 with Paul Bloss (later to transfer to St Neots) netting the winner.

Our Reserve side dropped to 8th/19 in the league but retained the Huntingdonshire Benevolent Cup with a 7-6 penalty shoot-out victory over Yaxley Reserves at Ramsey.

Under pressure, Barry Cavilla scored the fifth penalty before Grant Ager hit the winner.

CEWPORT PAGNELL TOWN FC HISTORY The first recorded football team in Newport Pagnell dates back to 1874 and the town has had many different teams since then. The modern club that we know today was formed in 1963 by a few young lads because they wanted a regular game of football.

From such humble beginnings to contesting two consecutive FA Vase finals at Wembley Stadium it is fair to say that it has been an eventful and exciting journey.

Newport Pagnell Wanderers entered a team in the North Bucks Minor League in their first season, playing home games on Bury Field Common. The following year saw the formation of a Senior team, they entered the North Bucks League and won Division 3 in their second season. Soon after that they won Division 2 and Division 1 (three times) in consecutive years. In the 1971-72 season they joined the South Midlands League, temporarily playing home matches at the Youth Club. Then in 1972 the club moved to the new facilities at the Willen Road Sports Ground, changing their name to Newport Pagnell Town the following season. In 1973-74 Newport Pagnell Town joined Division 2 of the United Counties League and won promotion to Division 1 in 1974-75. They won the Division 1 Championship. in 1981-82 and were promoted to the Premier Division. They were relegated in 1985-86, promoted back to the Premier Division in 1991-92 and then relegated again in 1996-97.

The club won the Division 1 Championship in 2001-02 and remained in the Premier Division until the FA moved the club into the Premier Division of the Spartan South Midlands League in 2019-20. Following two curtailed seasons the FA moved Newport back into the United Counties League Premier Division South in 2021-22.

Our best FA Cup achievement was to reach the Second Qualifying Round in 2008-09.

Newport have performed well in the Berks & Bucks FA County cups winning the Senior Trophy In 2009-10 and 2010-11, Intermediate Cup in 2001-02 and the Reserve Team won the Junior Cup in 1982-83. The club’s major achievement to date is, without doubt, winning the Buildbase FA Vase in 2022. Following a club record crowd of 1,858 at Willen Road for the exciting semi-final victory over Hamworthy United, more than 7,500 Newport Pagnell Town supporters travelled to Wembley to see the impressive 3-0 win over Littlehampton Town in the final. Then the following season this achievement was almost repeated when the Swans once again got to the FA Vase final.

Newport once again sold their entire allocation of tickets, although this time a very well organised Ascot United side went on to lift the cup winning 1-0.

Opponent Spotlight Newport Pagnell Town

Reaching two consecutive Wembley finals is something we never thought would happen in our wildest dreams.

As far back as 1936 Newport Pagnell has had a Women’s team and there has been various teams over the years since. In the last couple of years, the Women’s team has been re-established and in 2022-23 they were Champions of the Thames Valley Counties League Division 3.

They have been promoted to the East Midlands Regional League Division 1 South for the 2023-24 season and will also enter the Women’s FA Cup for the first time.

Newport run Bobicat & Bearcat Disability Teams and has around 30 youth teams for boys and girls. The club is passionate about providing a continuous pathway from youth to senior teams and many of this season’s Senior players have progressed from our Youth Section.
