WASTE MANAGEMENT THE PROFESSIONAL CHOICE
Sustainable waste management
Waste removal
Mick George Limited is the leading skip hire and waste management company in East Anglia and the East Midlands. We own and operate an extensive network of restoration and landfill sites, quarries, transfer stations and recycling facilities and offer comprehensive waste management services to construction, commercial and residential sectors professionally, ethically and sustainably.
We operate a large fleet of skip lorries and have over 3000 skips of varying shapes and sizes in circulation to cater for our clients needs. From 4 yd- 40 yd, enclosed, open, drop door, roll on/roll off, side door access; we have a skip that will be fit for purpose with guaranteed next day delivery. We load for you. Our 6 and 8 wheel grab lorries are purposefully designed to load heavy items or remove debris from a hard to access area with ease.
Recycling over 90% of the waste collected to divert from landfill
Professional waste segregation
We recycle on average between 90-95% of all the waste we collect, which means the amount of waste going to landfill is thereby reduced by 90-95% - far better for the environment and for our customers.
At our own facilities, all waste received makes its journey through a revolving trommel and magnetised metal picker before reaching a manual picking line where the various types of waste are segregated and graded by hand. The process is meticulous and there are no shortcuts. It is still the most effective route to the highest possible recycling rates.
We are committed to growing our business by adopting a zero waste to landfill approach and maintaining a focus on finding new and improved recycling solutions. The waste hierarchy is at the forefront of our operations striving for positive environmental impact and reduced costs.
The waste hierarchy and ‘zero waste to landfill’ commitment The waste hierarchy aim is to reduce the amount of waste produced and to recover maximum value from it. After all recycling options have been exhausted, we aim for zero waste to landfill with residual non-recyclable waste recovered as energy wherever possible. The only exception being some hazardous wastes such as asbestos, which has no other viable disposal solution.
PREVENTION Using less material in design and manufacture, designing products for a longer life. PREPARING FOR REUSE Cleaning, repairing, refurbishing whole items or spare parts. RECYCLING Turning waste into new materials or products. Includes composting if it meets quality protocols. OTHER RECOVERY Anaerobic digestion, incineration with energy recover, gasification and pyrolysis which produce energy fuels, some backfilling. DISPOSAL Landfill and incineration without energy recovery.

Efficient waste recovery and recycling We divert over 750,000 tonnes of waste material away from landfill each year to be recycled and re-used in industry, construction and agriculture and for sustainable energy production (SRF).
Closed loop recycling Our waste recycling plant at Ellington, Huntingdon is our flagship facility. Using the latest equipment and processes, we break down different waste streams through a series of closed loop recycling processes to return recycled materials back into the production cycle. For example, green waste goes to composting whilst wood waste is shredded for biomass or other products such as animal bedding or MDF manufacture. Plasterboard is also recycled for re-use in cement or even the production of cat litter.
Office waste paper recycling We are always looking for more ways to help businesses reduce their carbon footprint and save money and operate an easy office recycling programme. This guarantees a 100% recycling rate for paper – nothing goes to landfill.
HARDCORE/CONCRETE/INERTS
GREEN & FOOD WASTE
We crush and screen inert waste to produce a WRAP approved recycled aggregate, which is further endorsed by the Environment Agency.
We segregate this waste before it goes to a licensed compost facility. Here, the material is shredded and placed in windrows to compost naturally for agricultural and horticultural use.
WOOD Grade A mixed wood is shredded for animal bedding whilst lower grade contaminated wood is burned to create steam and drive turbines for electricity generation. This gasification process extracts energy from organic materials and provides a clean waste disposal technique (biomass fuel).
CARPETS AND TEXTILES
FERROUS & NON-FERROUS METALS
PAINT & OIL
Until recently, the majority of scrap metal was being exported to countries like China and India but we send these metals to the closest licensed scrap metal re-processors.
We are licensed to dispose of a wide range of controlled substances including paint, paint cans, oil, fuel and other automotive fluids as part of our hazardous waste services and in accordance with strict industry regulations.
CARDBOARD & PAPER
GLASS
Separated and baled cardboard is sent for reprocessing. It will be used to make things like boxes and packaging, toilet rolls, stationery and animal bedding.
Glass is crushed and any contaminants removed. It is sorted by colour and mixed with raw materials. Once melted, it is molded or blown into new jars and bottles.
PLASTERBOARD
WASTE ELECTRICAL & ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT (WEEE)
Plasterboard (or calcium sulphate waste) is shredded, screened and recycled to go back into the manufacturing cycle. Gypsum is used in the production of cement and also as a soil improver on agricultural land.
Carpet waste is sorted using infrared spectroscopy, shredded and baled for horse bedding and horticultural barrier matting. Our textiles are hand sorted, graded, weighed and press-packed into bales.
WEEE material is broken down into its individual components manually and recycled as either metals or plastics.
RIGID PLASTICS
BATTERIES
We send separated and baled plastics to specialist re-processors resulting in a plastic granulate. The automotive sector uses this for the production of bumpers and dashboards.
We send battery boxes housing a variety of batteries to specialists to recover the precious metals they contain such as lead, mercury, cadmium, zinc, manganese and lithium for re-use by industry.
SOILS
TYRES
Clean soils are either screened to produce topsoils for re-use or to restore old quarry workings back to agricultural or recreational land. Contaminated soils can also be treated at our own state-of-the-art Soil Washing Plant.
Old tyres are shredded to create a crumb product; this is often used by the equestrian industry as a versatile mĂŠnage floor cover. They can also be used as an alternative to aggregate in landfill drainage systems.
R
Contaminated land services We have a dedicated and experienced team to tackle ground contamination issues and help you achieve significantly reduced site development costs. We have the facilities and expertise to handle a wide variety of contamination types including: Asbestos
Soil washing facility
Heavy metals
Our state-of-the-art Soil Washing Plant at Mepal in Cambridgeshire offers one of the most advanced services of its kind in the country. The soil washing process separates contaminated material using various wet jetting processes during which intensive washing takes place. Once complete, the clean material is classified according to size with the finest fraction (silt) dewatered using a centrifuge. The process produces a saleable aggregate, which is WRAP approved and can be reused on site in many applications. Up to 100% recycling rates are achieved.
Invasive plants (e.g. Japanese Knotweed & Giant Hogweed) Hydrocarbons VOCs & SVOCs (volatile organic carbons/ semi-volatile organic carbons) PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) Due to our expertise and knowledge we can also offer our customers a lump sum price option providing a fixed price and capped solution. Within this remit we have expanded to include soil stabilisation and on-site land remediation projects. This enables to evaluate the suitability of a site for in situ environmental treatment, compaction or compression of existing material to enable it to be reused and avoid removal and ensuing waste and cost implications.
Professional asbestos disposal We are licensed to manage and dispose of asbestos and other hazardous waste such as clinical waste or contaminated soils – safely, securely and in accordance with current industry legislation (Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005) and the highest codes of practice. We are also licensed hauliers of hazardous waste under CDG regulations and ADR.
Mick George is one of the largest independent owners and operators of restoration and inert landfill sites in the UK. We employ a number of WAMITAB (Waste Management Industry Training & Advisory Board) accredited staff throughout the company to make sure we are compliant with the everchanging regulatory situation and that we can effectively and economically handle all your inert, non-hazardous and hazardous waste disposal. Over 95% of the waste we collect is diverted away from landfill and fed back into the production cycle and we further minimise the environmental impact of landfill waste by using the gas produced from biodegradation and converting it to electricity.
