Bourne Town (H) 27 Sep

A shot from Kieran Barnes was cleared off the goal line by Bradley Marshall and then at the other end the largely unemployed James Goff had to save at his near post from Jordan O’Brien. After 68 minutes Michael Amaeshike got underneath a Williams cross to send the ball over the bar but a minute later, he atoned when from a Rhys Thorpe cross, he scored from close range to put his side ahead. Visiting substitutes were added but it made little difference to the pattern of play and after the visiting keeper had produced a spectacular one-handed save to deny Charlie Bowen, the score became 2-0 when the hardworking Rhys Thorpe got on the end of a Furlong cross to double the score after 78 minutes. St Neots introduced a couple of substitutes to slow the pace, and they were able to cruise through the last ten minutes to claim a deserved victory.

After two successive league victories St Neots were handed a reality check in their long midweek trek to Basford. They came up against a side brimming with confidence that looked able to score every time they went forward. As a result, St Neots suffered their biggest league defeat for more than two years and their biggest under Manager Cameron Mawer. A goal down after just three minutes in Basford’s first attack it had looked difficult for the visitors from the start, and it was only to get worse as the game progressed. St Neots battled well but were lacking in direction and confidence and just after the break each side had created four direct shots at goal, but the visitors had only seriously tested the home keeper once whilst Basford led 3-0! St Neots had named an unchanged side for the third successive match with club skipper Robbie Parker warming the bench for the second time since serving his one match ban but the lack of confidence and finishing doomed St Neots to a miserable evening.
It began badly when Basford scored in their first attack as Kieran Cummings scored with an angled shot and things did not improve when after ten minutes the home side extended their lead as the unmarked Jordan Holland had time and space to add the second goal. St Neots seemed unfazed by this early double setback and Connor Furlong had a shot blocked and from a corner defender Harvey Henderson forced home custodian Matthew Yates into a full length save. As St Neots continued to press Rhys Thorpe shot wide and Kieran Barnes saw a shot blocked after neat play by Andrian Ankrah. The home side seemed happy to keep possession and their only remaining significant first half chance came two minutes before the break when Jack Goodman placed his finish on the roof of the net after moving inside two defenders.
St Neots hopes of a second half recovery were quickly extinguished when four minutes after the restart Tyler Dacre added a third goal for the hosts. St Neots began to look ragged, and Michael Amaeshike picked up a caution for a late challenge. Then on the hour all hopes of a comeback for the visitors were extinguished when a long forward pass freed Jack Goodman to take on the final defender and beat James Goff with a crisp finish.

Both sides then made substitutions and the match settled with a lot of play in midfield. The home side seemed happy to play keep ball and rest on their four goals advantage and St Neots became frustrated as they were unable to create any significant openings. They introduced substitutes Pharrell Anderson for his first appearance and Jessi Obeng who looked lively, but the visitors were unable to make any significant progress. St Neots best effort came from a Sam Willis free kick that was scrambled clear by a home defender two minutes from time.

St Neots returned from Nottingham empty handed against another side in the top third of the table.Carlton took full points but had to survive a second half battering by the visitors who were unable to break through a stubborn home defence in which the home keeper proved to be their match winner. It was a game of two halves with Saints keeper James Goff taking the man of the match award for his exploits in the first half but after the break it was Carlton keeper Felix Annan who took the plaudits with a stubborn display to secure full points for his side. St Neots Manager Cameron Mawer was able to name his preferred line-up with skipper Rob Parker restored to the starting line-up alongside Murphy Culkin back from his three-match suspension. That meant that Eniola Agemoh-Davies and Kieran Barnes were on the substitute bench. It proved to be a game of two halves with each side dominating whilst playing against the swirling wind.
After Harvey Williams had seen an early net-bound effort blocked by a defender, St Neots found their attacking ambitions thwarted by the strong wind that seemed to carry the ball away from their attack. Their best early chance saw a Murphy Culkin free kick well saved by Annan whilst at the other end Goff saved at full stretch from Niall Hylton. After surviving a spell of pressure by the home side, St Neots fell behind after 32 minutes when Ashley Chambers burst through on the left to beat Goff with a low shot to open the scoring. Niall Davie squandered a good opening for the home side in a breakaway attack as he was left unmarked to head over from close range and after Amaeshike had seen a close-range effort blocked on the line, the visitors deservedly levelled the scores when from a Connor Furlong cross, Michael Amaeshike netted an equaliser three minutes before the break. However, in a swift counterattack just before half time Carlton regained the lead when from a long throw by Lewis Durdin the lively Ashley Chambers netted from close range.

St Neots came out in a determined style after half time and took the attack to the home side. Kyle Sargent was booked for bringing down a visiting player and as St Neots maintained their pressure on the home defence, Rhys Thorpe was felled in the area, but the referee waved penalty appeals aside. Williams sent a shot just wide after good play by Rob Parker and Thorpe shot wide as St Neots looked for a second equaliser. Lamin Manneh headed off the home goal line in another St Neots attack and a second equaliser always looked on the cards. The home side tried to slow the game with defensive substitutes introduced and with a little over ten minutes remaining St Neots boosted their attack by giving James Stainsby his first run-out up front. Culkin had a shot well saved by the underpressure home custodian and he then produced the save of the match to deny Thorpe an equaliser that St Neots’ second half performance had deserved. But it was not to be as St Neots fell to their second successive away defeat in a week.
St Neots Town: Goff, Willis, Culkin, Parker, Henderson, Bowen, Furlong, Ankrah, Thorpe, Amaeshike, Williams

For the fourth time in their seven seasons in the Southern League St Neots exited the League Cup in the first round and for the second season in a row beaten by lower graded opponents. A contributory factor was the decision – by now a common practice amongst Step Three sides – to give the chance for squad members to prove themselves. In St Neots’ case Manager Matt Clements made no fewer than six changes from the team that had recorded three consecutive league victories and three of the six were making their Southern League debuts and that included player/coach David Bridges a former Cambridge United professional. The newcomers along with Bridges were Ronayne Marsh-Brown, a defender, and full back Joran Lee plus Peterborough United loanee Josh Davidson, whilst Scott Sinclair returned to the side and Harry O’Malley made his first senior start. Meantime four of the six rested players were on the bench with youth starlet Andre Williams.Any suspicion that Matt Clements had overplayed his hand with the changes were dispelled in the first half when his side dominated play and created almost all the scoring opportunities.
An opportunistic lengthy shot from Dylan Williams that sailed wide in the opening minute set the scene for the visitors.Skipper Luke Knight brought a full length save from home keeper Matt Finlay and then David Bridges set up Williams who narrow angled effort finished up in the side netting. Scott Sinclair was very lively on the right flank having shot after 19 minutes deflected for a corner and a second just wide of goal and then Finlay made a fine save to deny Bridges who was also prominent for St Neots. The match was turning out to be a feisty affair keeping Referee Paul Buck very busy and he booked Sinclair for a mistimed tackle after which he became the target for some rough treatment by home players. A Bridges header was comfortably saved after good work by Sinclair and by half time St Neots had done everything but made their superior possession pay, except for a goal.
The battered Sinclair failed to appear after the break with Andre Williams on in his place for his first senior appearance of the season. After former Saint Ben Farrell had shot badly wide in Rushden’s first minute attack after the restart, the game saw a significant moment as another former St Neots striker Chris Dillon broke free in front of goal only to be hauled down from behind by a mistimed tackle from Tom Wood. Wood was sent off and a penalty kick awarded which home skipper Liam Dolman tucked away sending Mike Emery the wrong way.

Now short of recognized defenders St Neots were too easily pushed back onto the defensive by a resurgent home side that smelled victory. St Neots effected their two further permitted changes and created chances on the break with the overlapping Jordan Lee hauled down on the edge of the area and Harry O’Malley seeing an acrobatic volley sail narrowly wide from a Jack Bradshaw corner. However, most of the play was focused on the St Neots goal with Rushden skilfully exploiting their oneman advantage. Callum Westwood and Darryl Smith both wasted chances to extend the lead and Emery made several excellent saves denying Fernando Bell-Toxtle and Dillon.Eight minutes from time there was a flashpoint in the St Neots six-yard box as the teams awaited a corner and after consulting an Assistant the Referee sent off Ronayne Marsh Brown and booked Dillon leaving St Neots to survive the last few minutes with nine men.Discipline could now be an ongoing problem with the redcarded players suspended from next Tuesday and three other players now just one booking away from suspension.
