Pitching In Northern League Midland Division

ST NEOTS TOWN 0

RUGBY BOROUGH 0

Promoted with St Neots from the UCL at the end of last season, Rugby Borough arrived at St Neots as early divisional leaders having played one more game than the leading bunch.St Neots were searching for their first points of the season after two league defeats and a third in the FA Cup competition but performed well against a side brimming with confidence. With regulars injured or unavailable Manager Cameron Mawer brought in three loan players to fill the gaps with striker Jamal Adams and full back Aaron Smith coming in from neighbours St Ives Town and defender Stacey Freeman on loan from Stamford. Borough had been well-beaten on their last visit in April but since then with strengthening in their side they looked a more positive and confident side.

The visitors began at pace winning three corners in the opening five minutes that were all successfully defended. St Neots hit back with the lively Harvey Williams seeing a low shot well saved by visiting keeper Carl O’Neil who was to go on the be the saviour of the visiting side.Connor Furlong broke through the visiting defence but shot wide but at the other end the lively visiting attack kept the St Neots defence at full stretch and home keeper James Goff did well to deny Jack Duffy. The keeper was also in action saving at full stretch to deny the impressive Will Grocott and then visiting striker Daniel Reka squandered the visitors’ best first half chance firing over the bar from close range. At the other end from a Kieran Barnes cross Jamal Adams placed a free header disappointingly over the bar and O’Neil then made an impressive save to turn away a Sam Willis header from a Williams cross. The half ended with defender Stacey Freeman joining the home attack to head over the bar.

The visitors opted to vary their approach at half time replacing their two attacking players with substitutes and it had an immediate attack with one of those added, Antonio Cristofaro, shooting over the bar after good work by Jake Duffy.

Rugby Borough (H) 19 Aug 2025

St Neots thought they were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty when Adams tumbled in the visitors’ box under a strong challenge but the well-placed Referee waved play on. St Neots then created a gilt edged chanced when Ankrah and Furlong combined to leave defenders in their wake, but Barnes scuffed his effort wide of the far post. The lively Cristofaro then had a shot deflected over the crossbar by a defender and at that point St Neots opted for a change in attack with Rhys Thorpe replacing the limping Jamal Adams. Cristofaro then saw a shot blocked by St Neots skipper Robbie Partker and the lively Williams still tormenting the visiting defence, saw his low close-range shot deflected for a corner by O’Neal. Ellis Myles curled the visitors’ final chance wide, and the match ended with St Neots unable to break through the determined visiting defence. A point apiece was a fair outcome getting St Neots to their first league point and a boost in their confidence.

MATCH REPORT

Coleshill Town (A) 23 Aug 2025

COLESHILL TOWN 1

ST NEOTS TOWN 3

St Neots recorded their first ever league win at Coleshill in the Midland Division of the Northern League with a solid if unspectacular performance. After running up a two goals’ lead, they had to defend in numbers as the host side mounted a second half offensive, but after conceding a goal their victory was confirmed with a stunning late goal from Kieran Barnes that slipped through the home keeper’s hands. Murphy Culkin, Harvey Henderson and Rhys Thorpe all returned to the starting line-up at the expense of the three loan players from the midweek match, but the injured Charlie Bowen was still missing. It was a performance of determination and commitment and was an example of how testing their new surroundings will be for Cameron Mawer’s side.

St Neots got off to a positive start with Rhys Thorpe having two very early chances in the first three minutes – the first volleyed narrowly over the bar, and the second a shot dragged wide of the far post after a searching through ball from Andrian Ankrah. Kieran Barnes then fired over the bar but after the host side had settled, they began to threaten the visiting goal. Vising keeper James Goff had to turn a close-range header from Tyreace Brown over the bar, and the lively Ben Usher-Shipway had his shot deflected for a corner. Another save from Goff denied Theo Rowe and then in a St Neots attack on a quick break, Barnes was felled but penalty appeals were waved away. Then on the half hour another quick break from defence saw the speedy Harvey Williams turn in the area to fire St Neots ahead. Usher-Shipway volleyed over the bar for the home side but towards time St Neots rallied with Thorpe firing over the bar after neat play by Connor Furlong, who then took on the home defence but shot wide.

In St Neots first attack after half time, they won a corner and from it, defender Harvey Henderson was barged in a back and a penalty awarded. Christian Tavernier stepped up to send the home keeper the wrong way to extend St Neots lead. With two attacking substitutes on the home side rallied strongly and Usher -Shipway got behind the visiting defence but could only find the sidenetting. Just past the hour Coleshill did get the ball in the St Neots net, but the visitors were saved by an offside flag. The pressure on the visiting defence continued and after 72 minutes Coleshill pulled a goal back when skipper Taylor Carter-Byrne produced a searing low shot from distance with Goff looking unsighted.

Now St Neots were under pressure but led by skipper Rob Parker they knuckled down defensively and four minutes from time they broke out for Kieran Barnes to claim a decisive third goal for his side with a swerving shot that home keeper Cameron Belford fumbled with the ball trickling into the net. It was no more than St Neots deserved after a spirited performance that lifted them up to midtable after four league matches.

SAINTS RECORD RUN IS OVER

ST NEOTS TOWN 1

WELLINGBOROUGH TOWN 2

Former St Neots striker Neo Richard-Noel returned to haunt his former colleagues with a fine individual second half goal to steal all three points in a tightly fought encounter. The result ended St Neots magnificent run of league results than has extended to fifteen matches undefeated since they were beaten at Wellingborough on 11 November last year. However, despite that outstanding run of form, the competitive nature of the division has left St Neots in fourth place in the league table – just the same where they were four months ago! With a run of fixtures against the top sides in the Division behind them St Neots must now redouble their efforts in their final seven league matches to earn a top five finish and a berth in the end of season play off matches. Manager Cameron Mawer made just one change in the team starting line-up returning fit again Rob Parker to the defence at the expense of Dammy Nickels. th

St Neots began in a positive vein with full back Murphy Culkin sending a free kick across the face of goal and Jordan Brown having a shot blocked after good work by Chris Tavernier. Then in their first attack of note the visitors took the lead after ten minutes as Jessi Obeng was allowed to find his way through a square lying defence to put the visitors in front. Five minutes later Connor Furlong who had just recovered from an injury in the midweek match at Daventry, limped off to be replaced by Harvey Williams after his injury break but unfortunately, he only last five minutes before a heavy tackle saw the St Neots substitute substituted with Israel Ajana introduced. Around that period St Neots struggled to put together any threatening attacks but after 28 minutes they were level as skipper James Hatch set up Chris Tavernier for a magnificently struck equaliser that will be a contender for goal of the season. Just before half time Jordan Brown cut in from the left but saw his shot deflected for a corner.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

April 2024 - Wellingborough T. (H)

The second half began with two good efforts by home skipper James Hatch both gathered by the visiting keeper but then on the break Neo Richard-Noel took on the home defence before unleashing a fierce cross shot that went in off the far post to restore Wellingborough’s lead. In reply, Rhys Thorpe volleyed over the bar after good work by Rob Parker and that was his last involvement as he was replaced by substitute Michael Amaeshike. Brown appealed vainly for a penalty when he was brought down as he sped into the penalty area and the visitors swiftly broke to the other end where James Goff had to be alert to save a rising shot from Callum Milne. More substitutions followed and then Charlie Bowen up for a corner headed wide. Ajana then tested the Adam North. and the visiting keeper then saved his side diving bravely at the feet of Amaeshike. As added time ticked away the same St Neots player headed wide, and the league leaders extended their lead at the top of the table to nine points with second placed Aylestone Park held to a draw by bottom side Desborough.

St Neots: Goff, Parker, Culkin, Tavernier, George, Bowen, Brown, Dummett, Thorpe, Hatch, Furlong
