Greenie’s Greeting Mike Green Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium, home of the Saints and the Mick George Academy, for today’s Evostik League South Premier Division Central match Today we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Hitchin Town Football Club and we hope you all enjoy your brief stay with us here this afternoon. Back to League action today after last Saturday’s unbelievable FA Cup tie against Romulus here at the Premier Plus Stadium where, as I’m sure you all know, we overcame all the odds and overturned a 3-0 deficit after 17 minutes to turn the tie on its head and triumph by four goals to three courtesy of Dion Sembie-Ferris’s injury time winner and spark scenes of emotion I have never witnessed in all my years with the Club. I’ve got to say that Matt played a tactical masterstroke ahead of the ensuing madness, switching to a back three and boy, did it pay off and the rest, as they say, is history and that’s quite true as we have reached the third round qualifying for the first time in forty years. Obviously there was the small matter of the £9k awaiting the winners which just added to the magic of the day. The draw for the Third Round Qualifying has been made and we have been paired with Coalville Town here, at The Premier Plus Stadium on Saturday October 6 th – kick off at 3.00pm, so please do spread the word and try to encourage as many people to come along as possible and hopefully cheer the lads on into a place in the next round. Saturday also saw the Reserves win their first local derby of the season with Eynesbury Rovers, winning 3-1 at Hall Road in the Kershaw League - League Cup. Goalscorers for the Saints were Kyrie Foster (2) and Jordan Carter. Lots going on socially here at the club with the Northern Soul / Motown night here last night and this was a great success so thanks to Black Cat 107 for helping with this and of course, next weekend we have our very own SaintoberFest, which looks like its going to be another success with tickets selling like hotcakes for the Comedy night on Friday and over 400 tickets snapped up for the outdoor cinema on Saturday. Lots of interest in our Sunday music and food day too along with the beer festival which is running all three days so please do get involved. Right then, back to today, another tough game in store so make some noise like last Saturday, you certainly played your part there and the proof was in the pudding

From the Dugout‌ With
Good afternoon to you all and warm wishes to our visitors from Hitchin Town FC today.
I hope we have all recovered from the FA Cup feast and comeback last week and whereby it was definitely not for the faint hearted, I can honestly say I have never felt emotion like that in my time here and had to stop myself ending up in the Crowd. It was a huge positive for all involved here and something to talk about for a long , long time in the future. We should enjoy those times but we can’t dwell on them as we seek to improve and take the club forward. More importantly, that game has now finished and we concentrate on using the past 4 weeks mixture of quality, form, performances and momentum to put into our league campaign. Of which I believe with the added signing of Russell Short, we have, in my opinion now, one of the strongest squads, if not the strongest in my time here to do so. With an almost fully fit squad for the first time this season to choose from, we look to again to move forward and I hope we can excite and entertain you with a good performance

OPPONENT SPOTLIGHT
HITCHIN TOWN FC Joined League: 1928 Chairman: Terry Barrett A special welcome this afternoon for our next league opponents HITCHIN TOWN and their Chairman Terry Barrett who doubles up as the League Chairman. Hitchin have had a difficult start to the new campaign currently languishing in the bottom three places in the league table with just one win in seven league starts. In the FA Cup they did beat lower graded Godmanchester Rovers in the first Round Qualifying but then they drew at home to Didcot in the next round and at the time these notes were penned the result of their replay was not known. If Hitchin were victorious in the replay they will be preparing for next Saturday to welcome Hastings United to their Top Field premises. Hitchin have had a good run recently in the league finishing in the play-offs in both 2015/16 and 2016/17 but last season they finished eleventh just one place and two points above our lads. Like most clubs at our level they have experienced a turnover in their playing staff and this has contributed to their fortunes. In the last three seasons their trips to the Premier Plus Stadium have proved quite fruitful with two victories and a
Website: www.hitchintownfc.co.uk
draw, whilst at Hitchin over that period they have a similar record. So, in the past three seasons Hitchin completed the ‘double’ over us twice until last season when both matches were drawn.
CLUB HISTORY It was not until 1928 that Hitchin Town FC was formed, and it was at this point that the nickname, “The Canaries”, was established. The club colors of yellow and at that time, blue, were also agreed upon. Prior to that, the old club played in white and magenta. The 1930s were halcyon days for Hitchin Town. Promotion to the Spartan Premier was won in 1931, but it was the FA Amateur Cup and AFA Senior Cup that captured the
imagination of the Hitchin public.. The club won the AFA Senior Cup in 1932, beating Derbyshire Amateurs in the final and in 1935, won the Spartan League Premier Division. The club entered the Athenian League in
1939 returning to that league after the war In 1953-54, the runners-up spot in the Athenian League was secured and the club reached the last eight of the FA Amateur Cup, losing 10-1 to the mighty Crook Town. Two years later, a crowd of 7,878 watched Hitchin beat Wycombe Wanderers 1-0 in the competition, but the club failed to progress beyond the quarter-finals again. The Canaries reached the FA Cup competition proper four times – in 1973-74, 1974-75, 1976-77 and 197879, although a giant-killing eluded them. In 1973-74, non-league Boston beat Hitchin 1-0 in the second round, depriving them of a lucrative tie with Derby County. Cambridge beat Hitchin in the first round a year later, and in 1976, Swindon finally saw off Hitchin 3-1 after a 1-1 draw at Top Field in the second round. In 1978, Bournemouth beat Hitchin 2-1 in the first round. By the end of the decade, though, the club was in decline and the 1980s was a dismal decade in which finances were limited and the emphasis was on youth. After 40 years in the Isthmian League Hitchin moved to
the Southern League in 2004/05 and have had six of the eight years since then in the Premier Division. After a poor start to the 200809 season the club was relegated at the end of the campaign. Hitchin enjoyed a successful 2009-10, winning 31 of 42 league games but had to enter the play-offs for the second promotion place. Sadly, the young Canaries ran out of steam and lost the play-off semi-final to Slough, a team that finished 23 points behind Hitchin! However, the following season Hitchin beat Slough and Daventry in the playoffs to claim the second promotion spot. In their first season back in the Premier, Hitchin enjoyed some bright moments, notably beating eventual champions Brackley and promotion chasing AFC Totton and Cambridge City. The final placing of 14th was considered satisfactory and the club went into 2013-14 looking to improve on that showing.

Jamie Vardy has gone on to forge a remarkable career in football from his earlier days in the lower leagues. But he is someone who has become so widely written about everyone from Land’s End to John O’Groats has come to groan whenever they read his name and ‘Non-League’ as the subject of a news headline. It is a little bit like when you would flick through the TV channels and you find Clare Balding presenting Crufts, then she’s on the BBC fronting coverage of the athletics and on Channel 4 doing the horse racing. And, in this regard, it’s similar when you see Jamie Vardy and another Non-League angle taken by a sportswriter who is tapping what’s left of an empty keg. His story is not unique to him and is not unique to Non-League football in this country or, indeed, in other football-loving nations. But that should not diminish the feats of his career – Clare Balding is still a great presenter after all, that’s why she is getting all the TV gigs. For Vardy, seeing his career ascend to the international stage was something few footballers can dream of. But here are a few who have trod the same path as the former FC Halifax Town forward. Miroslav Klose (Germany) – FC 08 Homberg The record goalscorer in FIFA World Cups was a bit of a late-bloomer in the sport before becoming a force for Die Mannschaft. At the age of 20, Klose was splitting his time between pulling on the colours of fifth division side FC 08 Homberg and bricklaying before a move to Kaiserslautern II in 1999 saw his career come into fruition. 125 goals for Bundesliga sides Kaiserslautern, Werder Bremen and European giants Bayern Munich followed, as well as a five-year stint in Italy with Lazio where he averaged one goal every two-and-ahalf games. For the national team, Klose became a much-needed puzzle piece that had been missing since Oliver Bierhoff’s retirement. In 137 caps for Germany Klose scored 71 times, including 16 goals at World Cups to pass Ronaldo’s record. Fernando Llorente (Spain) – CD Basconia Granted, Basque country club Basconia act as a feeder club to Athletic Bilbao but they are a club established in their own right and with their own history. Llorente was a teenager when he turned out for the third-tier side reaching double-figures in the 2003-04 season. Eight years with Bilbao followed and so did international honours as Llorente provided the grunt to back up the skill and finesse of David Villa and Fernando Torres in Spain’s World Cup and European Championship double of 2010 and 2012.
FA CUP SECOND QUALIFYING ROUND
St Neots Town 4 Romulus 3 It was akin to the script for ‘The Great Escape’. St Neots 3-0 down after 17 minutes against visiting Romulus who ply their trade at Step Five – two below their hosts – but who have a good record with three victories in the competition this season. At that stage St Neots looked to have let the £9,000 sponsorship prize for victory slip through their fingers with a shoddy defensive start to the match. They recovered to pull a goal back before the break but left it mighty late to snatch a dramatic winning goal three minutes into added time. So, they will now feature in the third round qualifying of the FA Cup for the first time in 40 years. It was a performance of great character considering that six of their squad were unavailable due to a mixture of cup tying, injury and suspension and they lined up with four fresh faces from their previous match with Harry Reynolds, Taylor Parr, Harry O’Malley and Devante Stanley replacing Finley Iron, Dan Olaniran, Jack Worman and Dylan Williams. For Parr it was a memorable 100th senior start for St Neots but he had to play second fiddle to manof-the-match Dion SembieFerris whose extravagant shirt shedding winning goal celebrations earned him a caution from the Referee. The least said about the first seventeen minutes of the match the better from St Neots’ perspective. The visitors took the game straight to them and in the first meaningful attack after two minutes, Dimitri Dunkley crossed to find Mitch Piggon wide on the left and he moved smoothly inside Matt Miles’ despairing challenge to find the back of the net. It was then a story of poor defending for five minutes later from a teasing Kris Taylor corner Mitch Piggon
rose unmarked at the near post to glance the ball into the net. That was bad but ten minutes after the second goal another Taylor corner – this time to the far post was headed firmly past Harry Reynolds by Luke Richards to install a 3-0 lead for the visitors. Just before that third goal Reynolds had saved at full stretch from Josh Willis to present Romulus with their corner and during this spell St Neots had managed just one shot on goal at the other end with Claudio Ofosu’s effort sailing harmlessly wide. Three minutes after the third Romulus goal, St Neots dragged themselves back into the match when Tom Wood headed home a Miles corner – his first league goal since February – and that seemed to regenerate his side. From that point on St Neots largely dominated possession with Sembie-Ferris unlucky not to be awarded a penalty when nudged off the ball by the visiting keeper, and then the same player struck a post with a rasping shot following another Miles corner. Harry O’Malley shot wide and Devante Stanley making his senior debut twice tested Tyrrell Belford – his second effort bringing the save of the match from the visiting keeper. The second half saw more St Neots domination, but chances went begging. Wood fired over from a lengthy Johnny Herd throw, Nabil Shariff had a close-range header deflected over the bar, Ofosu squandered a chance firing wide and a Sembie-Ferris effort was smothered. With twenty minutes left St Neots sent on Dan Olaniran and reorganized with just three at the back but chances were hard to come by with the visiting defense well marshalled by Obaro Edobor and Kris Taylor. Romulus might
have reinstated a three-goal lead after 75 minutes when a 45 yards lob from Taylor Allen almost caught Reynolds off his line, but he recovered to push it away and three minutes later Dion Sembie-Ferris got on the end of a Johnny Herd through ball to reduce the deficit. With five minutes left skipper Johnny Herd was again the inspiration as he got on the end of a Miles cross to level at 3-3 and then in that grandstand finish three minutes into injury time Shariff went past two defenders to pick out Dion Sembie-Ferris on the far post and his finish was clinical to sent St Neots into the next round.
