WELCOME A time to keep positive and get behind the lads Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium, home of the Saints and the Mick George Academy, for today’s Evostik League South Premier Division match. Today we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Bishops Stortford FC and we hope your short stay with us is a pleasant one. At last, we are back on familiar soil after what seems an absolute age after a run of four away games on the spin due to the Beast From The East causing chaos and the postponement of our scheduled home match with Banbury United, which, coincidentally, has been rearranged for Tuesday 10th April, kick off 7:45pm. Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new Chairman (back) to the Club. No stranger to many Saints supporters from our days at the Old Rowley Park and Shortsands, please join me in welcoming Barry Cavilla
to the Club and we as a board of directors are excited to be working with Barry and Kevin Hull (Community Chairman) as we look to push the Club forward. I would like to thank out-going Chairman, Lee Kearns, for all that he has helped the Club achieve in his time at the helm and we wish him well for his future. Right then, four away games on the spin, and four defeats. Not a great return but when you consider the problems Matt, Matt and Bridgo have had with suspensions , injury and illness, it’s not really that surprising however, looking at the results of these games, we haven’t been beaten by more than a solitary goal in any of them and these included Hereford and Slough so it’s not all gloom and doom. A time to keep positive and behind the lads as we enter
the home straight and with a bit of silverware at stake in the shape of the Hunts Senior Cup too. Don’t forget Tuesday evening sees the second FANS FORUM of the season as manager Matt Clements faces questions in an open session. This will now take place in the Scholarship Classrooms – kicking off at 7:00PM. The last event was a great success so please do come along and ask Matt anything Saints related and as ever, if he can, will give you an honest answer. Right then, please do get behind the boys today. Your support really does make a difference.

MANAGER’S NOTES Welcome to you all today and our visitors who arrive in fantastic form of which we respect and know our performance will have to be top drawer today. We have not been anywhere near our standards or levels recently and this is something that will be addressed by myself. As manager I take full responsibility and it’s a case of ensuring that the group I run are ready to compete. And where Basingstoke and Merthyr were woeful performances and not a true reflection of this season, they were not acceptable and will be corrected today with a performance more fitting of myself, the players and you the fans deserve. It has been tough with one thing after the other player availability wise, but that’s not an excuse and cant be
helped its football. The sad thing is that Harry O’ Malley will miss the rest of the season after a serious operation and recuperation is needed. Jack Bradshaw is weeks out with a knee problem which is looking worse than initially expected and Lewis Irwin returns to Northampton due to personal circumstances and we all wish him well and thank him for his performances. We can welcome though Jordan and Sam from Cambridge United two exciting and very talented youngsters and a face you may recognise indeed from earlier in the season who enjoyed putting the ball in the
back of the net regularly, for a few games in our run in. So never get to high with the highs, to low with the lows and remember where we were where we are and where we will end up as with points and a cup to play for the season is very very bright and alive still I thank you again for your support, apologise again for the previous two games but need you to back and encourage us as we look to finish what we started and in a positive manner

BISHOPS STORTFORD FC Joined League: 1874 Chairman: Ian Kettridge Website: www.bsfc.co.uk Nickname: The Blues
A special welcome for our next home Southern League Premier Division fixture of the season with BISHOPS’S STORTFORD our visitors this afternoon. This will be the first ever League visit of the Blues to the Premier Plus Stadium having been relegated to this level from the Conference South at the end of last season. They found their new surroundings difficult to adapt to, as have a series of Step Two clubs who have had to readjust to life at this level. Recently Gosport Borough, Farnborough, Basingstoke and Hayes and Yeading, like Bishop’s Stortford have hoped for a quick ‘bounce back’ to the higher level only to find that there is no divine right to the level at which they are able to compete. Twelve years at Step Two saw Stortford firmly established at that level and they have a rich history having been the first ever club to win both the FA Amateur Cup and the FA Trophy. They moved to their Prokit UK Stadium in 1999 (under the flight path at Stansted) and in our first formal league meeting in December, our lads ran out winners by the odd goal in three with David Bridges’ early goal being cancelled out before the break, before Nabil Shariff clinched all three points. However, after a stuttering start in the Southern League, Stortford have come good since Christmas and they arrive here on the back of five wins in their last six league matches. Their only reversal came away at Kettering, but they have recorded impressive
victories over Frome and Redditch and a recent draw with promotion chasing Slough Town. Delving further into the records I discovered that our two sides have met twice in the East Anglian Cup competition. In August 1969 our lads beat the Blues 1-0 in a first round match at our former Shortsands home but three years later away from home Stortford got their revenge with a 3-0 third round victory. Since then we met in a friendly match here at the Premier Plus Stadium on 26th July 2014 when our visitors returned home with a 2-1 victory with Mason Spence claiming our consolation goal. CLUB HISTORY Bishop’s Stortford Football Club was formed on Thursday 28th January 1874 at the Chequers Hotel in the town. Just over two weeks later the first match was played with the East of England Non-Conformist Grammar School (now Bishop’s Stortford College) being defeated by two goals to one, both scored by the Rev. R J Tomes. In that first season fifteen games were played, three of which were won, with seven others drawn. The Club colors at that time were vivid crimson and olive green. After several years of playing just friendly matches the Club became one of the founder members of the Hertfordshire Football Association in 1885 and played in the first ever County Senior Cup Competition that same season, beating Aspley 2-1 away from home in their first
match. The Club progressed into league football in the 1890s by joining a succession of locally based competitions. The highlights between 1889 and 1929 were the “double” seasons in 1912-13, when both the Saffron Walden & District League and the Stansted & District League titles were secured, and 1919-20, when the East Herts League and the Stansted & District League were won. The Premier Division title was eventually captured in the 1969-70 season. Then, a longterm ambition was realised when an application to join the Isthmian League was accepted for the 1971-72 season. Stortford then became the first ever Club to capture both the FA Amateur Cup and the FA Trophy. Off the field the Club suffered delays moving to its new ground at Dunmow Road having left the Rhodes Avenue ground at the end of 1997, which they had been at since 1919. On Friday 3rd September 1999, a crowd of 2,444 saw the official opening of the new stadium performed by George Graham followed by a match against a strong Tottenham Hotspur side including Hans Segers, David Ginola, Chris Armstrong, Ruel Fox, Jose Dominguez, Mauricio Tarico, Steffen Freund, Stephen Clemence and Justin Edinburgh. In 2006-07 the club flirted with promotion to the National Conference, the top echelon of non- league football.
A top six league finish led to a play-off semi-final against Salisbury City. The home leg, played in front of 1049 spectators ended in a 1-1 draw with Greg Pearson scoring for Stortford. Back at Salisbury, the score was again 1-1 after 90 minutes. But two extra time goals saw Salisbury march to the final and the Conference. At the end of the 2016/17 season Stortford was relegated from the National League South having finished 21st with 27 points from their 42 League matches – 13 points from safety thus ending a spell of twelve years at Step Two. BISHOPS STORTFORD FC SQUAD 2017/18 KEVIN WATSON – MANAGER Kevin was appointed Manager of Stortford in March 2017. He started his career as a trainee with Tottenham Hotspur and scored his only goal for the Spurs on his debut in a League Cup tie against Brentford. A midfield player he went on loan to several clubs before he signed in 1996 for Swindon Town. Kevin then played for Rotherham United, where he made over 100 appearances, Reading and Colchester United playing for the latter club from 2004 until 2008 and also making over 100 appearances. During the 2015/2016 season Kevin was appointed the Assistant Manager at Stevenage whilst Teddy Sheringham was the Manager. Then in August 2016 Kevin was the Assistant Manager at Eastleigh. MARK HUGHES– PLAYER/ COACH Mark is a very experienced midfielder who has joined Kevin Watson’s team for the new season and made his Blues debut on the opening day of the season at Tiverton Town. He netted his first Stortford goal in
the 3-1 win at Gosport Borough in October. He started his career at Tottenham Hotspur progressing through the Spurs’ youth system and breaking into the reserve side. Midway through the 2003/2004 season he was loaned to Oldham Athletic and was quickly signed on permanently. Mark scored his first goal professionally in a 4-3 win over Bristol City. He had a short spell on loan with non-league Thurrock but was soon back in the Football League with Chesterfield. Mark had spells with Stevenage Borough and Chester City where he was a regular team member for 18 months. He then moved to Barnet where he played over 100 matches and he scored the goal that kept Barnet in the League at the end of the 2011/12 season netting the winner in a 2-1 victory over Burton Albion that relegated Hereford United to the Football Conference. Mark then played for Eastleigh before having 3 seasons with Chelmsford City where he was captain and last season was playing for Eastbourne Borough. Mark played twice for Northern Ireland in 2006 collecting full caps on a tour of America against Rumania and Uruguay. COLIN TAYLOR – PHYSIO Colin has been the main Therapist at the ProKit UK Stadium for many seasons and has not missed a first team competitive or non-competitive match is the last eight years. CALUM KITSCHA – GOALKEEPER Calum was signed by Stortford towards the end of February and made his debut in the home fixture against Frome Town. The Blues were Calum’s first senior club as he was in the Community club set-up before playing a number of matches for the reserve side in the Capital League in the
2010/11 season. He then joined Histon, in the National League South, and was with the Cambridge side for three seasons clocking up over 60 appearances. Calum then joined Hayes & Yeading also in the National South at the start of the 2014/15 term. In October 2014 Calum made his one appearance for the England C national side when he played in a 2-0 defeat by Turkey in Istanbul. In July 2015 he joined National League side Cheltenham Town and made his debut for them in a FA Trophy tie against Chelmsford City. After helping the Robins gain promotion into the EFL Calum signed a new one-year deal in June 2016 and made his Football League debut during an EFL Trophy tie against Blackpool. Whilst at Cheltenham he had a spell on loan at Worcester City. He left Cheltenham at the end of last season upon the expiry of his contract and signed for Welling United in November. More recently he has played a few matches for Hoddesdon Town in the Spartan South Midland League. GEORGE CASEY – DEFENDER/MIDFIELDER George was a new signing in the close season and made his Blues debut in the first match of the campaign at Tiverton Town. He was originally with Stevenage on an Academy Scholarship and signed his first professional contract for the Boro in May 2015. During the 2015/2016 season he was loaned out to Chesham United where he helped them beat Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup, and then loaned to St Neots Town. After leaving Stevenage George signed for St Albans City at the start of last season and played against the Blues in both league fixtures last term. TOM CLIFFORD –
DEFENDER Signed on work experience loan from Southend United in early December, Tom made excellent debut for the Blues by scoring in his opening match that was a 4-2 victory over Slough Town. Tom played in various age groups for the Shrimpers and two days before signing for Stortford scored the under 23s’ last goal in a 4-0 victory over Swindon Town’s under 23s. JOE ROBINSON – DEFENDER Joe originally joined Ipswich Town as a 12 year-old and progressed through the Tractor Boys’ youth set-up captaining both the under 18 and under 21 teams. He made his senior debut in a 2-1 defeat FA Cup defeat at Portsmouth. In February 2016 Joe went on loan to Woking and has also had loan spells more recently at Boston United and St Albans City. His Blues debut was in the first game of the season at Tiverton Town and his first goal at home to Tiverton Town in October. MARVEL EKPITETA – DEFENDER A versatile defender, Marvel returned to Stortford in the summer having joined the Blues originally in September 2016 from Chelmsford City. He made his debut that month against Margate. Alongside his twin brother Marvin he began his career at Oxford United before moving to Stevenage. He had a brief stint with AFC Hayes before linking up with Chelmsford City during the 2015/2016 campaign. Marvel left Stortford before Christmas 2016 after making 11 appearances and signed for Vanarama National League South club East Thurrock United and was part of their squad that reached the Essex
Senior Cup Final last term. He netted his first Blues goal on Boxing Day in a league match at Biggleswade Town. MAX BRASSINGTON – DEFENDER Max made his senior debut for Stortford in a Herts Senior Cup tie away at Hitchin Town in early December. He had earlier this season played in every tie of the under 18s great run in the FA Youth Cup. Max spent seven years in the Colchester United youth set-up and also a spell in Cambridge United’s youth set-up. JAMIE CURETON – STRIKER A former Premiership striker, Jamie joined from Farnborough and made his Blues debut in the New Years Day fixture at home to Royston Town. In a long and varied career he started at Norwich City making his senior debut against Everton in November 1994 and scoring his first senior goal when finding the net versus Chelsea the next month. He has gone on to play for Bristol Rovers, Reading, Queens Park Rangers, Swindon, Colchester United, Exeter City, Leyton Orient and Cheltenham Town and in non-league Dagenham & Redbridge, Eastleigh and St Albans City as well as Farnborough. Last June he was part of the England team that won the Veterans World Cup in Thailand and he was the star performer scoring in every tie including the 2-0 Final victory over Iran. Jamie is employed as an Academy coach at the Arsenal with the under 15s and under 16s. Jamie scored his first goal for Stortford in a 1-1 draw at Weymouth in early January and has now netted over 300 league goals in his career. DEAN AGER – MIDFIELDER An attacking midfielder, Dean
made a spectacular debut for the Blues when he came off the bench at half-time in a home match against Dunstable in late November and within three minutes had netted a great goal from distance. He is with Stortford on a work experience loan from Colchester United and had first come to manager Kevin Watson’s attention when netting two goals in the Us 5-0 defeat of the Blues under 18s in the 2nd round of the FA Youth Cup. Dean also scored twice against Cheshunt in the FA Youth Cup 1st round. He first played for Colchester’s under 10s and has played at all age levels and made some appearances in their under 23 side this season. CALLUM JONES – STRIKER Like Dean Ager, Callum joined the Blues on a work experience from Colchester United and like him has played an important part in the U’s fine FA Youth Cup run this season. He also netted two goals versus Stortford in the 2nd round and scored the second goal in the 2-0 defeat of Milton Keynes Dons in the 4th round and provided an assist for the first goal. Callum also began at Colchester with the under 10s and has played at all age levels scoring 33 goals in the 29 matches with the under 16s and also has skippered the youth side. Callum signed loan forms for Stortford in January and made his Blues debut coming on as a substitute in a league match away at Chesham United. DARREN FOXLEY – UTILITY Darren started his football career in Dagenham & Redbridge’s Academy setup. He then had spells with Barkingside and Soham Town Rangers before signing, earlier this year, for Cambridge City. He made his Stortford debut

in the opening match of the campaign away at Tiverton Town and netted two goals in his first three games and has been virtually ever present in the side this term. JORDAN WESTCOTT – MIDFIELDER 21 year-old Jordan impressed in pre-season with his local side. He was an outstanding player through the age groups in the Stortford Community side set-up and has had a number of trials with professional clubs. Most of last season was spent with local Essex Senior League side Takeley with whom he made over 40 appearances. Jordan made his Blues debut coming on as a substitute away at Tiverton Town in the first match of the campaign and scored his first goal netting a late equaliser against Farnborough in November. JACK THOMAS – MIDFIELDER Jack spent two seasons with the Blues Academy set-up and last season gained valuable experience of senior football with Sawbridgeworth Town in the Essex Senior League. He made his Blues first team debut in a Hertfordshire Charity Cup Semi-Final tie against Hitchin Town in mid September and has been a major influence in the Blues midfield since then. CALLUM TAYLOR – STRIKER Signed first team registration forms in late October and made his first team debut almost straightaway in the away league fixture at King’s Lynn Town when coming on as a substitute. Callum has played an important role, scoring a couple of goals, with the club’s youth team that had a fine run into the 2nd round proper of the FA Youth Cup. He netted his first senior goal at Stratford Town in November.
ALFIE MASON – STRIKER Alfie is another member of the successful under 18s side that fought their way through to play Colchester United in the 2nd round proper of the FA Youth. He scored twice in extra time when Stortford beat Boreham Wood in the 1st round. Alfie made his Blues senior debut when coming on as a substitute against Kings Langley in November. He had a short spell at Thurlow Nunn Eastern Leaguers Coggeshall Town in the early part of the New Year. MARCUS CROWTHER – DEFENDER Only 16 in July, Marcus signed for the first team in mid October on the back of some excellent performances with the youth team in the FA Youth Cup that took them through to the 2nd Round proper of the competition. He made his 1st team debut as a substitute in a 4-0 win against Hanwell Town in the FA Trophy. FREDDIE OAKMAN – MIDFIELDER Freddie is another member of the club’s under 18s squad that reached the 2nd round of the FA Youth Cup. Freddie was signed on Evo Stik South forms in mid November and was an unused substitute against Farnborough that month. He made his first team debut when coming on as a substitute in a home match against Banbury United in January. JOE RYAN – MIDFIELDER Joe made his first team debut against Hitchin Town in a Herts Senior Cup tie in early December. He is a son of former Stortford player Pat Ryan and was with the club’s Academy set-up four years ago. Since then Joe has played for Royston Town and Essex Senior Leaguers Takeley
before rejoining the club this season and playing for the Development side. CHAD CRUSE - DEFENDER Signed on senior forms in January, Chad is in his second year at the Blues Academy setup. In the first year he played in midfield but this term has been successfully playing in the left back role. He was called up for the first team for the home fixture versus Banbury United and was an unused substitute in that match and then made his debut away at Hereford when he was in the starting line-up. FRANKIE OATHAM – DEFENDER Now in his second year with the Club’s Academy side, Frankie has skippered the team and has gone forward from his central defender role to score a number of goals. He has played regularly this term for local Essex Senior Leaguers Takeley and at the start of February signed senior forms for the Blues and made his debut coming on as a substitute in the away match in early February at Hereford. JAMIE RILEY – DEFENDER An 18 year old who is in his first year with the Blues Academy Jamie has performed strongly this season and has impressed boss Kevin Watson so much that he has now signed Evo Stik League South forms. He was an unused substitute in the away fixture at Hereford in early February.
ONCE the dust settles and we assess the National Game Awards, our thoughts often drift back to the category which we believe means the most to the person in possession of a glass decanter. Every year we welcome managers, players, directors and personnel from all across the country. Some have put in the miles to make it to west London, setting off in the early hours. Some don’t even know why we’ve asked them along. That’s often the case with one very special award we take pride in presenting every year. ‘We couldn’t do it without you’ is said a lot at the end of every season, but with the William Hill Fan of the Year that is quite literally the case – it just can’t work without your help. It’s quite rare that the Fan of the Year isn’t one of the most memorable. Why? Because the person walking out with an NGA in a box under their arm always has passion for football flowing through their body. But, while covering as many grounds as our team possibly can every year, we can’t be in a thousand places all at once. That’s why we are welcoming your input more than ever before – it’s our duty to ensure the right person leaves Stamford Bridge with their name engraved on the award on Wednesday, May 16. This is where you come in. Do you know a super fan who travels the length and breadth of the country to back their team, come rain or come shine? What about a supporter who has had to endure turmoil off the pitch at their club – there’s been several examples of that this season too! We want to hear if your club has a supporter who has reached a significant milestone after years of dedication. Put that person forward and our team will sit down and study the candidates to make certain we’ve got the right Fan of the Year! It’s fair to say we got our man nearly ten months ago in Stalybridge Celtic fan Andrew Betts. Despite being just 17 at the time, Betts had been playing a big part at Celtic for five years, attending almost all of their fixtures even though the club haven’t had a lot to shout about. That’s not all, however, as he volunteers for pitch cleaning at Bower Fold, mans the turnstiles when needed, helps sells refreshments and also arranges supporters’ transport for away matches. Now we need to find this year’s worthy recipient – and we need you to help us deliver a day they will never forget!

1ST TEAM REPORT BASINGSTOKE TOWN Southern League Premier Division St Neots produced their worst performance on the road since losing in the League Cup at Rushden & Diamonds in October. Basingstoke have been on a good run of late with only one defeat in their previous six League outings but their performance on the day hardly merited all three points with the visiting side lacking in method, application and belief. A picture of the possession in the match is displayed in the corner count where St Neots had twelve and Basingstoke two, but of course it is goals that count and apart from a couple of smart saves by home keeper Colm McAdden, St Neots seldom looked like scoring. The side is being hampered by a lack of competition for places because again from within the usual senior squad St Neots had three players injured, one ill, and Kyron Wiltshire serving the final match of his suspension. No doubt Manager Matt Clements would dearly have liked to have introduced change in the second half to boost the confidence of his side but with only two inexperienced substitutes on the bench there was little room to maneuver. So, his side dropped two places to thirteenth in the table and must now work hard to achieve their stated aim of a place in the top half of the final league table with the next test being a long trip to Wales to play Merthyr. After a slow start which saw only one early shot by Sam Smart comfortably saved by Finlay Iron, St Neots almost took the lead in the tenth minute – an

effort that was to be their best of the match! Dion Sembie-Ferris was brought down in full flight on the right and from Johnny Herd’s measured free kick to the far post David Bridges headed back into the centre and Taylor Parr’s acrobatic volley brought the save of the match from Colm McAdden as he fingertipped the ball over the bat at full stretch. A thirty yards effort by skipper Luke Knight was well saved by the keeper and Nabil Shariff worked his way along the bye line to see his narrow-angled shot comfortably saved. With Luke Knight and Bridges dominating the midfield play the St Neots wide attacking players were seeing a lot of the ball but the final crosses and passes were inaccurate and easily cut out by the home defence. Tom Wood joined the attack on the overlap and saw his crisp low shot pushed for a corner whilst at the other end Finlay Iron was almost a spectator and he watched a second Smart shot sail harmlessly wide after some loose marking. Then as half time approached in the 43rd minute Basingstoke scored with their first credible attempt ion goal. Sam Argent drifted wide right and went past one defender and when his harmless looking cross was not cleared the ball fell to Sam Smart who clipped a low shot through a forest of legs with the unfortunate Iron looking unsighted.
had shown in the first 45 minutes. A Knight shot was blocked after good work by Shariff, but the home side were looking much better on the break and the lively Sam Argent had two good efforts – one saved by the keeper and the other passing narrowly wide of the far post. Slick play by Shariff just past the hour and a clever back heeled flick set up Stefan Broccoli but he skied his shot over the bar but in the next attack Broccoli collected a Johnny Herd pass to bring a good save from McAdden. In the last 25 minutes St Neots visibly flagged, and Basingstoke started to enjoy an equal share of possession and attacking play. Smart should have added his name to the score sheet for a second time when Callum Bunting unselfishly set him up with only Iron to beat but he shot hopelessly wide giving St Neots a chance to capitalize. However, they produced nothing to threaten the home goal as they ran out of ideas and became frustrated with their own efforts. Basingstoke skillfully slowed the pattern of play by introducing their three permitted substitutes and it always looked that one goal would be enough to take all three points.
St Neots must have been told at half time ‘you have done everything but score – now go out and put the ball in the net’. That proved to be wishful thinking because they appeared to have lost the momentum they

Southern League Premier Division For the first time under the supervision of Manager Matt Clements, St Neots suffered a fourth consecutive League defeat – this time away on the 4G pitch at Merthyr. The difficult lengthy journey and driving snow flurries and a biting east wind made conditions very unattractive but at no time did St Neots look like they were enjoying their Saturday afternoon task at a venue where they have never won. In fact, their 5-2 home victory at the Premier Plus Stadium in December was the only time they had beaten the Welsh side in six meetings. Too many players looked below their best on the day and even the return of Kyron Wiltshire after suspension failed to boost the confidence of the team. David Bridges was unavailable to travel, and Liam McDevitt joined the depressingly lengthy injury list meaning that the starting line-up included Dan Buddle at full back for his Southern League debut, and Johnny Butler in midfield making his first League start since April last year whilst Johnny Herd was celebrating his 50th appearance for St Neots. To add to the disappointment of the occasion the hosts scored the only goal of the match after just 65 seconds of the start of the match with St Neots ‘caught cold’ and that was to prove a setback from which they were not to recover. The hardy band of St Neots supporters had hardly had time to take their places on the terraces when their side were behind. In their first attack Merthyr mounted a swift move on the right flank

and Owain Jones crossed for Jarrad Wright to rise above his marker to head wide of Finlay Iron. St Neots were stunned and offered little in reply as Jones again broke free and Iron had to save at his feet to prevent a second goal. It was 12 minutes before St Neots managed a shot on target – this from a lengthy Johnny Herd throw that found the head of Taylor Parr but home keeper Ed Hewitson saved comfortably. Dan Buddle then fed Dion Sembie-Ferris with a reverse pass and the 16 years old home keeper saved well but the main direction of play was towards the St Neots goal with far too many St Neots forward passes either misplaced or over-ambitious. Only the promptings of Dylan Williams and the returning Kyron Wiltshire looked like seriously threatening the home defence whilst at the other end Iron had to save from Ian Traylor and Ryan Prosser. In a rare St Neots attack Tom Wood headed over the bar from a Williams corner and as half time approached Kerry Morgan went past two St Neots defenders but could only fire high over the bar.
threaten as Sembie-Ferris went past his marker to go clear but a last ditch saving tackle by Wright saved the day for the home side. Just past the hour Nabil Shariff headed wide from a Williams’ cross and from another lengthy Herd throw, a Parr shot was scrambled for a corner. With fifteen minutes remaining Traylor was left unmarked to collect an Adam Davies cross but he failed to clinch the result with a poor header wide of goal and then substitute Jaye Bowen saw his shot rebound from the foot of a goalpost. St Neots had two late openings to snatch a point, but Sembie-Ferris volleyed over the bar and substitute Scott Sinclair just failed to reach a Johnny Herd cross in front of an open net. A late one-handed save by Iron to deny Jones kept the score line to a respectable level.
The visiting side needed to vary their approach after the break but with only Scott Sinclair recovering from a six matches injury lay off on the bench, the Manager had no real options. Again, St Neots susceptibility to starting slowly after a kick off surfaced as Merthyr created two further chances in the space of sixty seconds as a crisp Morgan shot was pushed for a corner at full stretch by Iron and from the resultant corner, a snap shot by Traylor rebounded from the crossbar. St Neots did then

BEDFONT TOWN
Bedfont had climbed from bottom of the table to 13th inspired by their victory over St Neots back in November and they arrived at the Hunts Post Community Stadium after an unbeaten run of ten matches. However, that run never looked like being continued once St Neots had scored an early goal and the visitors managed just one direct shot on goal in the ninety minutes. St Neots had skipper Lewis Webb making his 99th start and he marked it with a man of the match nonstop performance in midfield setting up a team selection conundrum for Manager Dennis Greene once Adrian Sear regains his fitness. Ben Mackey’s brace took his scoring tally to 15 goals in just 15 appearances and there was a cameo goal from substitute Pearson Mwanyongo to complete the scoring. St Neots began well and after just five minutes Lewis Hilliard had the ball in the net after Ben Mackey’s first shot had been parried but the effort was ruled out by an offside flag. However, they only had to wait a further six minutes before Stefan Moore unselfishly knocked down a Dan Jacob cross and
0
Mackey rifled the ball in at the far post. Lewis Webb then drove his way through the defence but was robbed by a tumbling save from visiting keeper Gary Ross and then Dan Jacob headed wide from a Moore corner. Little was seen of the Bedfont attack as they persisted with just one up front, but they struggled to stifle the midfield drive and invention of Webb and Junior Konadu. Dwain Williams did manager to win a duel in the air but headed wide of goal and Jordan Gent then went close at the other end with a header gratefully grabbed at full stretch by Ross. Right on half time Jacob picked up a splendid cross field pass from Hope but drove his shot across goal. Ironically it was Bedfont’s first corner of the match after 48 minutes that led to St Neots second goal. A defensive header allowed Lewis Hilliard send Stefan Moore away on the left and he had lots of time to pick out the unmarked Ben Mackey fifteen yards from the line for the second goal. Within two minutes it could have been a Mackey hat trick, but his rasping volley hit the underside of the crossbar and was scrambled
away. Bedfont were slightly less defensively minded and this opened up spaces for St Neots to exploit and from a Rene Steer cross Dan Jacob saw his shot rebound from the cross bar. By now St Neots had sent on Pearson Mwanyongo to run at the tiring defence and they also added Rashid Kamara and Shane Tolley to their attack. Bedfont managed one direct shot from Dwain Williams but then reverted to their defensive formation but they could not prevent St Neots third goal as the lively Pearson Mwanyongo drifted past his marker and rounded the goalkeeper to complete the scoring six minutes from time to the delight of the home fans.
St Neots: Duggan, Stewart, Steer, Webb, Gent, Hope, Hilliard, Konadu, Moore, Mackey, Jacob. Subs: Mwanyongo (for Konadu 56 mins), Tolley (for Mackey 70 mins), Kamara (for Gent 70 mins), Henebery and Greene Man of the Match: Lewis Webb Attendance: 479
