Greenie’s Greeting Mike Green
Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus
Stadium for today’s BetVictor Southern League Division One Central match.
Today we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and
supporters of Daventry Town Football Club and we hope your brief stay with us is an enjoyable one.
At last, back on home soil after three consecutive away games and two
ten-day periods of inactivity. In actual fact we are just three days shy of a month since our last home game here when we lost to Barton Rovers. Since that day we have visited both Welwyn Garden City and Thame United and been on the end of two drubbings and most recently and more encouragingly, a short trip to Biggleswade FC where we held the hosts to a goalless draw.
Home games are rather like buses, you don’t see one for absolute ages
and then we have three in the space of just seven days. Tuesday sees us entertain EYNESBURY ROVERS in the Huntingdonshire Football Association Senior Challenge Cup quarter final and then next Saturday we are back to league action when we host AYLESBURY UNITED. Please get behind the lads today. When times are hard, your vocal support is even more important. Hard times don’t last forever and will make the good times even sweeter.
From The Dugout… With Manager
Firstly, it’s been a while since we had a home match at the Premier Plus Stadium- in fact the last game at home was against a well organised Barton Rovers team at the beginning of October.
Players in -
Firstly we’d like to welcome 2 of our latest signings this week; Jonny Butler, previously at St Neots under Matt Clements. An experienced defender who holds lots of games at Step 3/4. We also signed Ben Stokes a midfielder previously with Coalville, Carlton Town. A robust, creative player. Some may have seen Alan Musoke, a strong running forward, again a player that will complement our young players.
Players out -
Mikey Davies has decided to rejoin Cambs City, we wish him well. Alfie Connar has decided to go back to Soham, it’s not quite worked out for Alfie after a promising preseason. Sam Bennett has joined Yaxley- a top person, who will improve with more games. Tim Nkula & Mason Rhiney have also been let go in order to bring some players in that we feel will suit our best young players. We thank all the players for there efforts & wish them well in the future.
Update -
Unfortunately we received the news this week that James our young Analysis & video recorder will be leaving the club as he will be taking on a part time job as well as holding down he’s college responsibilities- firstly, on a personal note James is destined for great things in life. He’s beyond he’s years in knowledge & is very passionate about going above & beyond. From all the staff, players etc we wish him all the best in he’s future & i am sure he will be fully welcomed back at any given opportunity.
Now we have three home matches, a variety of challenges ahead we are very keen as a group to gather points on the board & to progress through to the next round of the Hunts Cup. An important week for the squad but a challenge we feel we can continue our response.
We look forward to welcoming all the supporters, once again thank you for all your continued support & hope to follow up last Wednesday night draw v Biggleswade with a win. Marc, Sean & Matty

Club History
during an arson attack.
Since forming in 1886 Daventry Town Football Club has had a chequered history over its 132 years, from a devastating fire in 2005 which threatened the club’s existence to an incredible cup run which saw over 700 fans travel to League 2 Chesterfield in 2014.
With the cub on the brink of going out of business, Iain Humphrey took the helm and work began to revitalise the club with the introduction of new floodlights, walkways and other infrastructure to support the clubs promotion ambitions.
Switching to the Northants Combination in 1987, under the guidance of Manager Willie Barrett, the clubs fortunes began to flourish, Barrett leading the club to successive championships in the Northants Combination First and Premier Divisions and in 1989/90 they secured promotion to the United Counties League Division One Leaving the “Hollow” in the centre of the town in 1990 when the club moved to its current home at the Elderstubbs, the club’s fortunes suffered a devastating blow in 2005– 06, when the Elderstubbs clubhouse and changing rooms were destroyed
2007–08 was a very successful season for Daventry Town. They won UCL Division One, losing just once, and defeated three Premier division teams en route to the League Knockout Cup final, where they lost to Desborough Town 3–2. In the season 2009–10, Daventry won promotion to the Southern League Division One Central, by becoming champions of the United Counties League under the guidance of manager Ady Fuller. Daventry Town reached the last 16 of the FA vase, the final of the NFA Senior Cup, beaten by Corby Town by 3 – 2 and the semi – finals of the UCL KO cup before Captain Paul
Saunders lifted the UCL championship to secure Daventry Town a coveted place in the Southern League for 2010/11. Under the guidance of Ady Fuller and assistant Paul Lamb, their first season in the Southern League almost ended with another promotion however they lost in the play off final to Hitchin Town. Former Aston Villa, Charlton and Republic of Ireland international Mark Kinsella became manager in the summer 2011 however his season long spell was unsuccessful and former Daventry United/Ford Sports Manager Darran Foster was appointed with Neil Champelovier as his assistant and Paul Dempsey as coach in 2012. Daventry Town made history in 2013-2014 by reaching the First Round of the FA Cup, a visit to Chesterfield’s Proact Stadium their reward. They were eventually beaten by 2 – 0 in front of over
700 of their own travelling supporters and a crowd of over 5269. Town also reached the first round proper of the FA Trophy losing 1 0 to Maidenhead United. Town reached the final of the Northamptonshire Senior Cup - Hillier Cup beating Cogenhoe United, managed by Andy Marks, 3 - 0, Scott Cross (2) and Luke Keen scoring the goals. Town had been seasonlong favourites for promotion from the Southern League Division One Central in 2013 -2014 but the back log of fixtures caused by the cup runs took effect. They lost the promotion play-offs at the semi-final stage at Kettering Town, narrowly beaten 1-0. Darran Foster resigned as manager on 30th October 2014 following budget cuts and was replaced by former Watford, Oldham and Preston star, Allan Smart. Former Manager Ady Fuller was appointed as his Assistant Manager with the bulk of the players supplied by Smart’s London based Academy. In the Summer of 2015, the club were moved to the Northern Premier League Division One South and with Smart and the players
based in the South, het resigned in July 2015. Darran Foster returned to Daventry Town as Manager just nine months after resigning however he also resigned on Easter Saturday after a 5 0 home defeat to Kidsgrove Athletic. Club Goalkeeping Coach Derren Midson and the Club’s Juniors Development Officer Pete Flockhart stepped in as Caretaker Managers with Brian Porter returning as Club Secretary to ensure the club somehow completed their remaining 6 fixtures of the 2015/2016 season. In a move planned to reset the club’s financial problems, Town took voluntary relegation to step 6 football and the club returned to the United Counties League Division 1. In April 2016, Steve Tubb took over as Chairman. On the 12th May 2016, the club appointed Arron Parkinson and Andy Marks as joint managers. With a zero budget for the season, the team management have worked wonders in turning the club around and winning the UCL Division 1 title, unbeaten at home.
Andy Marks left the club at the end of the season due to family and work commitments. Ian King joined Parkinson as Joint Manager in May 2017. Town finished the 2017/18 season in 10th position, winning the Buckingham Charity Cup for the first time in their history. 2018/19 saw the return of the Reserves managed by Andy Emery. Ian King left to join Northampton Town Academy. Arron Parkinson took over as Manager with goalkeeper Matt Finlay as his Assistant Manager and Pete Harris coming in a Club Coach respectively. After an excellent start to the 2018/19 league season and two FA Cup wins scoring 16 goals in the process, the Town went on to win the UCL Premier Division with a 1 1 draw at Pinchbeck United. The club were presented with the trophy on Easter Monday after a 3 0 win over local rivals and pre-season favourites Rugby Town in front of a crowd of 393. Town also won the UCL Knock Out Cup by beating Holbeach United 3 1 in the final at Raunds Town. Town returned to step 4 in the BetVictor Southern League Division One Central for the 2019/20 season.
Player Profiles Goalkeepers:
Iustin Cerga - Previous Clubs: FC Dacia of the Moldovan First Division Iustin has been first choice for over three seasons now and will complete 100 appearances this year. Made his debut in 2013 and would have made many more appearances if work commitments had not got in the way. He was last season’s joint supporter’s player of the season. He produced several excellent saves in last seasons double winning season, none more so than the memorable double save he made at Desborough Town. Defenders:
Rico Alexander – Previous Clubs: Wellingborough Town and Rugby Town. Virtually ever present in the championship season, Rico formed a solid partnership with Ross Harris at the back and “Rico” became a crowd favourite. He joined Rugby Town in the summer along with Kieran Fitzgerald however both failed to settle at the Valley and returned as soon as FA rules permitted. Joe Merrill - Previous Clubs: AFC Rushden & Diamonds, Northampton Sileby Rangers
Joe is a great athlete who excites, with his desire to venture forward regularly and his long range goals last year were a joy to watch. Would be every present if work commitments did not limit his appearances Dean Lukeman - Previous Clubs: Northampton Sileby Rangers, Cogenhoe United Over 80 appearances for Daventry Town after having four seasons with Cogenhoe United. A tenacious full back who loves to get forward and never shirks a challenge. Came back well after a long term knee injury. One of a number of players who joined the Town when we dropped to step 6. Another who would have a made over 100 appearances had injuries not got in the way. Ross Harris - Previous Clubs: Cogenhoe United, Woodford United What a player in the heart of the Town defence and wearing the captain’s armband. Experience and composure are two of his biggest assets and when Ross bites into the tackle, it’s with power and timing. It’s easy to understand why he is a hit with the fans. Ross completed 100 appearances for Town last season and is another who has risen with us from step 6 Dan Childs - Previous Clubs: Long Buckby,
Woodford United Utility player Dan is content anywhere across the back 4 or in the middle of the park. Now nearing a 150 appearances since his debut as a 17 year old back in 2012. Jack Finch - Previous Clubs: Coventry City, Kidderminster Harriers and Banbury United
An experienced performer with bags of class. Another player who never stops running and it is hard to see that he will turn 40 this season. Uses the ball well and rarely gives the ball away.
Jack progressed through the Coventry City academy to sign professionally at the end of season 2013/14. He made 16 Football League appearances for the Sky Blues in season 2014/15 before suffering a serious knee injury. Jack improves with every game he plays
Tommy McGowan Previous Clubs: Cogenhoe United
Jordan Orosz - Previous Clubs: Kettering Town, AFC Kempston Rovers
Every club should have a player like Tommy, who has starred all season expertly protected the back four. A big hit with his team mates and the coaching staff, he does his work efficiently and without any fuss. With us since step 6 when a serious knee injury kept him out for nearly the whole season.
Taylor’s younger brother, had a good couple of seasons at Kettering Town before his moving to the Town in 2016. He is a useful asset to the squad with strength and passing. Like his brother, bags of pace and he can score a few too.

Ade Fuller – Banbury United Ade is a former Town manager, having managed the club during their rise from the UCL and to a Southern League Play Off Final v Hitchin Town. Ade has since managed Banbury United, Kidlington and Rugby Borough
WE CAN always count on the FA Cup to throw up memorable and unusual stories each season for Non-League clubs. So far this is the season for Chichester City. The Step 4 club have made it all the way to the first round for the first time in 60 years – and then got a bye straight into the second! For those who missed it, the bye came because of League One Bury’s demise. There were an odd number of clubs in the first round proper draw so it was decided the final ball in the hat would progress straight through, with the £36,000 prize money cheque thrown in for good measure. Of course, no football club or fan wants to be seen benefiting from someone else’s misfortune but it seemed fitting that the lowest ranked club left in the competition were the lucky recipients. They’ve even made a donation to the Bury start-up club, which they didn’t have to, showing they understand the importance of the football family. The players celebrated wildly on TV and fair play to them. They now get the chance to draw a plum tie in the second round and even dream of reaching the third round – what a story that would be. Like many others, Chichester City will be grateful for the financial benefits of the FA Cup too. The FA recently doubled the prize fund and this season we saw losing money in the qualifying rounds. The FA see the competition as a great way to put the money from TV deals back into football and it is certainly huge for clubs providing they spend it right and that’s one of the big talking points – how does a club spend their money wisely? For some that might mean signing that striker that will win promotion. For others it’s purchasing new equipment or renovating the tea bar. Our friend from The Non-League Show, Tim Fuell, penned a column in last Sunday’s NLP on the very subject. As someone involved at Hayes & Yeading he is seeing first-hand how big a cup run can be with their first round proper tie against Oxford United selected for live TV. Check the column out if you can, but Tim brings up the idea of how money can be best spent – how about a voucher to be used by clubs at FA recommended outlets? So instead of the money being wasted on the team, an investment is made into the club’s infrastructure or is used to improve the ground. You’ll no doubt have your own views but anything that can be to the benefit of a football club long term is surely the way to go? We’ll enjoy telling the FA Cup stories over the coming weeks and plenty of clubs will soak up the national spotlight. While the actual games are great in the moment, it’s important the cup money leaves a lasting legacy too.
SOUTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE CENTRAL St Neots Town With almost a full squad to choose from St Neots will be disappointed with a fourth straight home defeat. But for an inspired performance by home keeper James Philp the reversal would have been heavier. After the break with his side chasing the game, Barton set up several good counter attacking moves that could have led to further goals, but the keeper was alert and agile and fully deserved his second half clean sheet. However, there are still defensive concerns for Manager Marc Abbott because with Stevan Shaw back from suspension and injury, he was able to name his first choice back four, but his side have now conceded 17 goals in four home games and this is a major problem that must be arrested. Barton came into the game on the back of an impressive 4-0 away victory at Hullbridge in the FA Trophy and they were probably the best visiting side of the season, but the bottom line was yet another defeat. With Coleshill picking up points this week St Neots are beginning to look more isolated just one point above the wrong end of the league table. Barton made a very impressive start with a series of quick-fire, neat attacking moves to test the home defence. In their first attack Tony Williams directed a free header over the bar and Jemale McKenzie-Lowe then had a net bound shot blocked by a defender. St Neots meantime made little progress in attack and after 12minutes they fell behind when a defender appeared to miss a free kick by Jerome Jibodi and behind him Jemale McKenzieLowe stabbed the ball past the surprised Philp. The slick passing visitors continued to dominate the attacking play

Barton Rovers
with Victor Osobu setting up Nathan Tshikuna but Philp saved comfortably. St Neots did break out just past the half hour for Sam Goode to win a Lee Watkins corner, but his looping header rebounded from the crossbar with visiting keeper Kyle Forster beaten and in the same attack Prince Mutswunguma shot wide when he should at least have tested the keeper. The second Barton goal six minutes before the break left St Neots chasing the game but it never should have been allowed! From an Osobu cross Dean Dummett headed past the keeper but had clearly shoved his marker in the back – something not spotted by the match officials. In the three minutes before half time Prince Mutswunguma had two clear shooting chances for the hosts but he put one wide and aimed the second too close to the keeper. It was again the visitors who made the better start on the resumption. Philp distinguished himself with a fine early save from Dummett and both Garry Jones and McKenzie-Lowe were off target with their efforts after neat attacking moves. However, St Neots were now striving to rustle up a recovery and Ben Bradley sent a free kick over the bar and substitute Joe Sutton on for Sam Gomersal made an early impact scything through the defence to be brought down but again the free kick was squandered. Bradley then set up Sam Bennett, but he lost control as he was about to shoot, and the chance went begging. At the other end Philp made two excellent saves to deny Williams and McKenzie-Lowe and St Neots tried to benefit from this but from a Sutton free kick Goode volleyed over the bar. The last few minutes
2 saw Mutswunguma again in attacking action firstly bringing a good save from Forster and then off-balance after beating two defenders, shooting high over the bar. Another disappointing home defeat but signs of some improvement to build on with the side without a match for the next ten days due to their untimely FA Trophy exit. St Neots: Philp, Kerins, Smith, Boxer, Shaw, Goode, Gomersal, Watkins, Bennett, Bradley, Mutswunguma Subs: Sutton (for Gomersall 71 mins), N’Kala (for Bradley 71 mins), Connor, Noble and Rhiney. Cards: none Goals: none Barton: Forster, Jibodu, Jones, Dummett, Sonuga, McKenzie-Lowe, Osobu, Gibson, Thomas, Tshikuna, Williams Subs: Olaniran (for Thomas 80 mins), Weekes (for Osobu 84 mins), Griffith (for Jibodu 90 mins), Gittins and Lukulay, Cards: Thomas (Y – 8 mins), Jones (Y – 63 mins), Gibson (Y – 73 mins) Goals: Jemale McKenzieLowe (12 mins), Dean Dummett (39 mins) Referee: Jeffrey Aldous (Bedford) Attendance: 229 John Walker
SOUTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE CENTRAL Welwyn Garden City It was hardly ideal preparation for an important away midweek match. Most of St Neots’ players and officials (plus the Referee and his Assistants) were held up on the A1(M) because of a serious accident, for more than an hour and three quarters in stationary traffic on the way to the match. As a result, the start was delayed, and the match eventually kicked off at 8.30 pm. Not the perfect start for St Neots three recent additions to the squad all who made their debut at Welwyn. The host side flying high at present with only one defeat in eight league starts, plus two victories over Premier Division teams in the League Cup, proved just two good for St Neots, and inflicted on them their heaviest ever Southern League defeat, and their worst league reversal for 13 years. It must have been a salutary experience for the three newcomers to the side, forwards Alan Musoke from Amersham Town and Daniel Alusemo from Royston Town, and midfielder Mikey Davies from Cambridge City who had little opportunity to show their potential. They replaced Prince Mutswunguma, Sam Bennett, Sam Gomersal and Stevan Shaw in the starting line-up with Jake Noble recalled to the side. There are now two further away trips to Thame (Saturday) and Biggleswade FC (Wednesday) to regroup and try to salvage some pride. St Neots looked good enough in the very early stages, but they were rocked back on their heels when Welwyn went ahead after seven minutes in their first attack in which they won a corner from which home skipper Dave Keenleyside volleyed into the net. That seemed to set a pattern for the first half with Callum Stead
7
St Neots Town
rampant for Welwyn on the right and Elliot Bailey and Eusebio Da Silva squandering promising openings. St Neots one clear chance was a breakaway attack in which the home keeper came 30 yards from his line to head clear and although James Philp saved well from Stead the pressure was growing. After 28 minutes the home side doubled their advantage when from a Lee Close free kick, Da Silva knocked the ball down to the unmarked Elliot Bailey to convert and four minutes later the same Welwyn player scored again after more unselfish play from Da Silva. St Neots look shellshocked and having to defend in numbers on a permanent basis but there was more punishment to come four minutes before half time when Dave Keenleyside unleashed a powerful shot from 35 yards that seemed to mesmerise the St Neots goalkeeper and establish his side with a gamewinning 4-0 lead. St Neots needed to dig deep to find a device to stop the non-stop attacking from the home side but any plan to do this was further damaged just three minutes after the restart when Elliot Bailey completed a twenty minutes hat trick to make it 5-0 before making way to a substitute to deserved rapturous home applause. St Neots also sent on two substitutes and seemed to be able to stem the flow for around twenty minutes during which time full back Jake Kerins pulled back a consolation goal – his second from outside the area this season. However, towards the end the home side began to assert themselves again as St Neots seemed to tire, and eleven minutes from time Callum Stead produced Welwyn’s sixth goal with a solo effort. Three minutes
1
later Kerins almost scored a second goal for the visitors – another lengthy effort that beat the home keeper but rebounded from the crossbar. Predictably Welwyn had the last word as substitute Tony Cathline completed the scoring through a weary St Neots defence. SOUTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE CENTRAL Thame United “How can a side dominate the opening 30 minutes of a match and go on to lose 6-0?” That was the unanswered question circulating amongst the visiting side after their latest drubbing. It is insufficient to say that the visitors fell apart after conceding the first goal, but the fact is that once behind they never really looked like getting back into the match. If you drill deeper into the match details, it is apparent that very poor defending was a major contributory factor but coupled with this a lack of confidence and determination to make amends for mistakes hangs heavily in the answer. Overall it was a better performance than the midweek defeat at Welwyn, but Manager Marc Abbott and his staff must conjure up some swift improvement in performances after just a single victory in nine league outings. Up until last weekend the side had conceded just two goals in three away fixtures but a further thirteen in four days on their travels has further dented their poor overall record. In a bid to freshen up his team and in a surprise move, Abbott left skipper Lee Watkins and former skipper Ben Bradley on the substitutes bench bringing in Alfie Connor and Joe Sutton in a revised line-up with Jake Noble handed the key centre half role. Their cause was not helped when Alfie Connor became the third player this season to be sent off, after picking up two yellow cards in less than a minute for some very injudicious tackling. It left his side with ten men for the final twelve minutes during which period they conceded a sixth goal. The start was quite impressive. St Neots carved out three early chances against what looked to be a hesitant home defence. Alfie Connor sent a free kick the wrong side of the far post, Joe Sutton
6
St Neots Town
was also just off target with a snapshot from distance, and Daniel Alusemo shot over the bar – all in the first quarter of an hour. Thame replied when from a Morgan Green cross, Thomas Ashworth stabbed the ball wide at the far post after 22 minutes and two minutes later Green was back defending at a corner to clear a Sutton cross off the goal line. The Thame breakthrough came then, slightly against the general run of play after 32 minutes, when Jack Tutton moved inside Jake Noble to curl a shot around retreating goalkeeper James Philp. Panny Boxer was felled by a lunging tackle earning Ben Sturgess the first caution of the match, and then two minutes before half time, Green crossed to the far post where Daniel West headed back across goal and when goalkeeper and defender failed to clear Tom Ashworth forced the ball in from close range. There was still time for Boxer to pick up the first St Neots yellow card for a late tackle. Philp produced a good save upon the resumption getting down to parry a shot from Gregory Hackett and on a counter-attack Sutton was just wide with his effort. However, St Neots hopes of a quick comeback were dashed just five minutes after the restart when from a Hackett cross Ryan Blake rose high above the St Neots defence to head past Philp to make it 3-0 with all the goals down to shoddy defending. At that point with 54 minutes gone, Marc Abbott decided to ‘go for broke’ sending on all three permitted substitutes. Before the reshaped side had time to settle a fierce free kick was only parried to the feet of James Essex and he completed a simple finish after 56 minutes. For a ten minutes spell St Neots looked revived with substitutes Ben Bradley

and Lee Watkins driving them forward from midfield, but apart from off-target efforts from Jake Kerins and Jake Noble they failed to bother the home goal. The fifth Thame goal after 65 minutes came from a Jordan Balogun cross to the far post where Gary Hackett rose to head home off the underside of the crossbar. Connor’s dismissal followed before substitute Marcus Mealing became the sixth home player to put his name on the scoresheet as he converted a late penalty kick awarded for a goal line handball offence. St Neots: Philp, Kerins, Smith, Connor, Noble, Goode, Sutton, Boxer, Musoke, Alusemo, Davies Subs: Watkins (for Sutton 54 mins), Mutswunguma (for Boxer 54 mins), Bradley (for Alusemo 54 mins), Shaw and Gomersal. SOUTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE CENTRAL Biggleswade FC After conceding thirteen goals in two away league matches the previous week, a reshaped St Neots side rolled up their sleeves and produced a resolute and determined performance to deservedly take a point in their second away goalless league performance of the season. Manager Marc Abbott once again rang the changes as he seeks his best line-up and will regret that his side could not find the goal that would have afforded them a full haul of three points. League newcomers Biggleswade FC promoted from Step Five at the end of last season have a similar problem in front of goal having only scored nine in ten league outings – the same number as their visitors who have three points less. The game took a long time to get going with defences dominant with St Neots restoring Stevan Shaw at the back and Lee Watkins and Ben Bradley in midfield, In addition Prince Mutswunguma was back in the attack with Jake Noble Mikey Davies and Daniel Alusemo making way plus Alfie Connor having returned to Soham Town after just ten appearances. Another ten day break now with the next match at the Premier Plus Stadium on November 2nd. The first half was almost a nonevent in terms of goalscoring potential. The respective defences were tight and wellorganized giving nothing away to the opposition, and although the football was neat and endto-end, there was little of note. Biggleswade suffered an early setback after 17 minutes when midfielder Matt Richardson was injured and limped off to be

replaced by Danny Payne. St Neots seemed to be growing in confidence and around the half hour Joe Sutton was crudely upended on the edge of the penalty area, but the free kick was fired tamely into the defensive wall. In the next attack Sutton fired narrowly over the bar and the home side replied quickly with the lively Kieran Barnes going free but Sam Goode got back to clear. The main threat from the home side came down either flank where Barnes seemed able to get around his marker and just before the break Prince Mutswunguma wriggled his way past two defenders to be fouled, but the Referee played the advantage rule and the St Neots player went on to shoot wide.
saw his effort deflected over the bar by a defender. A flurry of late substitutions saw the intensity of the contest drop and before the final whistle there were signs that both sides were content to see the points shared. For St Neots it was the conclusion of a run of six successive league defeats and will have boosted their confidence ahead of three of their next four league matches on home soil.
The game opened up after the break. The first test of either keeper came from Lawrie Marsh, but James Philp saved well, and then at the other end, from a Lee Watkins cross, Ben Bradley fired wide. Tom Coles headed wide and St Neots main threat was coming from long throws by Aaron Smith that kept the home defence under pressure. Philp then needed two attempts to keep out a rising shot from Marsh, but he did well to keep out a spectacular overhead kick by Coles. St Neots looked dangerous on the break but generally lacked a finish although Mutswunguma did fire in a lengthy effort that Tyler Josephs was glad to see clear his crossbar. Ryan Inskip squandered the best chance of the match after 71 minutes sending a volley high over the bar from six yards and then St Neots substitute Sam Gomersal

HUNTINGDONSHIRE INTERMEDIATE CUP – ROUND TWO SOMERSHAM TOWN St Neots Reserves recorded their first victory of the season at the eleventh attempt in confident style as they moved into the quarter finals of the Huntingdonshire Intermediate Cup at Somersham. The result avenged a defeat in the same competition by the same side two years ago, and the young St Neots side will now feature in the last eight of the competition for the first time in three seasons. From the kick off the visitors took the game to Somersham and almost took the lead within first minute when Murphy Culkin could have scored but he could only find the side netting, but then the host side responded and after 20 minutes had the ball in the net but this effort was ruled out by an offside flag. Somers ham’s main threat came from set pieces and in particular, long throws into the penalty area but no Somersham player could take advantage and the visitors rode their luck!! Gradually they grew into the game and Ellis Duffus linked up well with Dan

Olive to create a good chance. James Wills & Murphy Culkin both had chances, but the home keeper saved well. Five minutes before the break Saints responded when a cross from Dan Olive was headed in at the back post by Murphy Culkin to give them the lead in a scrappy first half. Somersham started the second half the more impressive with Saints inviting pressure with some sloppy passing. Josh Francis came on in midfield for Glen Grimes and minutes later Culkin extended Saints lead with a well taken finish to make it 2-0. Saints were now in control with good openings being squandered by Wills whose effort hit the side netting and by Duffus who went clear, but the home keeper saved well. St Neots had to be aware of the threat posed by the Somersham centre forward who should have reduced the arrears but blasted over when well placed. The long throw threat was dealt with better by the visiting defence and on the 65th minutes they extended their lead when James Wills burst past the defence but was brought
down by the keeper. Wills dusted himself down and tucked the penalty away to extend the lead to 3-0. To Somersham’s credit they continued to press & good saves from Dylan Martin kept the ball out of the Saints net. The game became more open as Somersham tried to find a way back but visiting substitutes Jordan Carter & Aldo Walsh both missed good opportunities to extend lead. Rio Thompson came on for the excellent Dan Olive with 15 mins to go, and the home side made a strong finish, but goalkeeper Dylan Martin kept them at bay to earn Gearing’s Man of the Match Award. Reserves: Martin, Olive, Shillinde, O’Hara, Howell, Dunnett, Rzeszutek, Grimes, Wills, Culkin, Duffus Subs: Thompson, Carter, Kester, Francis, Walsh

THURLOW NUNN YOUTH LEAGUE ST NEOTS TOWN U18 St Neots completed their first West Division league double of the season as they defeated visitors Holbeach in a closely fought match. The victory saw St Neots replace their Lincolnshire visitors at the top of the league table. The only goal came from leading scorer Reif Clarke who too his tally to seven

in nine starts this season and it was St Neots first victory in five league and cup outings after a good start at the beginning of the campaign.

THURLOW NUNN YOUTH LEAGUE MARCH TOWN U18 For the followers of the St Neots U18 side this was something of a collectors’ item. For the first time in almost five seasons it was a goalless finish to a league match. However, St Neots Manager Alex Minall was pleased with the outcome, for the result arrested a run of three successive league and cup defeats in which his side had conceded twelve goals whilst scoring just four themselves. He successfully drafted in two new signings in Gary Kirk and Jacob Styles and playing against one of the two so far undefeated sides in the West Division a draw would always have been an acceptable outcome away from home. As the score line suggests it was a tightly fought match with neither goalkeeper seriously tested although the home side made the brighter start with visiting keeper Dylan Martin

having to save bravely at the feet of Tristan Jones, and both Brody Warren squandering chances when well placed. Efraim Romanos headed wide from a corner whilst at the other end Adrian O’Hara was only just wide from a Jake Wood corner. St Neots finished the first half more positively and Jacob Styles and Dan Olive had chances comfortable gathered by the home keeper, and on the stroke of half time from a free kick Jake Wood saw a header saved. St Neots went on to start the second period well. Reif Clarke burst through the home defence to be upended and a penalty kick looked certain, but the Referee awarded a free kick outside the area for an earlier nudge, and following a free kick not cleared Jake Wood fired narrowly over the bar. The introduction by both sides of
0
substitutes seemed to break up the rhythm of the game but after 56 minutes Clarke again ran at the defence but home keeper Kye Gilmour parried his effort with Gary Kirk heading the resultant corner over the bar. As the game wore on St Neots began to dominate possession and might have snatched victory but some of their finishing was off target and both teams seemed happy to share the points. St Neots: Martin, Garlikowski, Howell, O’Hara, Cranfield, Kirk, Olive, Brown, Clarke, Styles, Wood Subs used: Smalley, Matzk, Watkins, Clark and Tull. Cards: none
