Greenie’s Greeting Mike Green
Good evening everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium for tonight’s Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round Replay.
Tonight we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters
of Godmanchester Rovers and we hope you all enjoy your brief stay here with us.
Preparations for today’s game couldn’t have gone any worse to be honest
with Saturday’s debacle here with North Leigh running in five goals and the only bright spot of the afternoon was a quite exquisite free kick from ALFIE CONNOR which proved to be a mere consolation. Hopefully we will have Jacob Joseph and Sam Gomarsall back and available for selection this evening.
Our visitors warmed up for tonight with a 3-1 win over Whitton United so I’m sure they will be coming here as firm favourites and looking to add a notable scalp to their cup history.
The winners of todays tie will face Biggleswade Town at Home, next
Saturday (7th September) and will pick up the winners purse of £2890, whilst the losers take home £960
Should the scores of tonight’s tie be level at the end of 90 minutes, there will be 30 minutes of extra time and penalties, should they be needed. Enjoy the game…… Until next time…
OPPONENT SPOTLIGHT
GODMANCHESTER ROVERS Year founded: 1911 Chairman: Karly Hurst Club Website: www.godmanchesterroversfc.co.uk
WELCOME TO GODMANCHESTER ROVERS FC. Situated on the banks of the River Great Ouse, 16 miles North West of Cambridge, on the A14. Godmanchester is a town, not a village as it was chartered in 1212 and again in 1604. Godmanchester has been inhabited for over 2000 years and was a very important Roman settlement. Football has been played in Godmanchester since the late 1890’s Godmanchester Rovers came into existence in 1911, previously playing as Godmanchester Town. The first recorded mention of the club is from the ‘Cambridge Independent Press’ newspaper dated Friday 26th December 1913 where Godmanchester Rovers had a fixture against StIves on Boxing Day. During the 1928–29 season, when they won the Hunts Junior Cup. They played in the Huntingdonshire League for many years before joining the Cambridgeshire League. They won the Hunts Junior Cup again in 1988–89, and in 1992 were promoted to the top division of the Cambridgeshire League. In 1994–95 they won the League Cup, retaining it for the next two seasons. However, they were relegated to the Senior Division in 2000. With the club about to move into a new ground, they made a speculative application to join the Eastern Counties League in 2002. Despite being in the second tier
of the Cambridgeshire League, the club were successful. They finished bottom of the division in 2004–05, but were not relegated as the league was under strength in terms of numbers. In 2011–12 the club won the Eastern Counties Division One on goal difference to earn promotion to the Premier Division, also winning the Division One Knock-out Cup, defeating Whitton United 1–0 in the final. In the 2014-15 season the club finished as runners-up in the Premier Division also adding the Hunts Senior Cup to an all-round successful record for the season. At the end of season, Nev Nania, retired from his role as First Team manager and took the position of Football Consultant within the club. The 2015-16 saw the appointment of Matt Clements as First Team Manager, with Matty Haniver keeping his role as First Team Player Coach. The season ended as the previous season with a second place finish, unbeaten in the last 17 League games. Before the start of the 201617 season Rovers saw the resignation of Matt Clements and the appointment of Adrian Cambridge as First Team coach. At the same time, much of the established first team players moved to different clubs, leaving Aidy Cambridge with the job of rebuilding the first team. Shortly into the new season Matty Haniver, 1st team Player Coach, departed, with his role filled by John Bitting. After 19 games in charge, Manager Aidy Cambridge and
Assistant John Bitting stood down from their roles at the club. The clubs football consultant, Nev Nania took temporary charge for the next home match. Former Godmanchester Rovers player, Chris Hyem was appointed First Team manager after being released from Histon FC. Hyem started his tenure with five straight wins, rapidly moving the team up the league and well away from the relegation zone. After a brief run of loses and draws over the Christmas and New Year period, Rovers found their stride again and finished in 12th place. After securing Premiership football for the 2017-2018 season Chris Hyem stood down as manager, electing for a playerassistant role. Ollie Drake was appointed first team manager, fresh from winning the Kershaw League, Premier Division title with Hardwick. Drake will be joined at Rovers by his father Steve. The 2017-2018 Season was marred with high number of postponed games creating a large backlog of matches to be played, due to severe weather, notably ‘The Beast From The East’ and heavy rain. Ollie Drakes aim for the 20172018 was to build on the progress made by Chris Hyem during 2016-2017 season and secure a mid-table position. The first few months, in Ollie’s own words ‘A little lack luster’ starting with a run of draws and losses both at home and away. Results started to improve with the return of a number of players that departed at the end of the 2016-2017 season with a run of
7 winning games putting Rovers in 10th position at the start of October. The next 6 weeks then proved to be a difficult period, losing three premiership games, and knocked out of the Hunts Senior Cup and FA Vase. Fortune then returned and from Mid-November through to the end of the season, Rovers won 24, drew 1 and lost 6 of their remaining 31 matches landing Roves a 4th place finish in the seasons 24 team league. This also included a run of 9 games undefeated. During the season break work was undertaken to add addition drainage to the pitch to elevate potential postponed matches. At the beginning of the season Chris Hyem has stepped down from his assistant manager role to focus on his player role at the club. A majority of the 20172018 squad have signed on for a further year with further new signings to further bolster the squad for a promotion push. The 2018-2019 season saw the retention of the majority of the squad from the previous season. Despite a strong winning run of pre-season matches and a win in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary round, Rovers lost their opening League match but bounced back with a FA Cup win in the next game. This was the start of pattern that Godmanchester had throughout the season, strong performances in Cup Games but mixed in League games, unlike the previous season there was no clear winning form in the league that resulted on a number of draws that they should have won. Ultimately these draws proved decisive in the final table with Godmanchester finishing third on 73 points, 22 points behind league winners Histon. In Cup competitions, Godmanchester progressed to the FA Cup First Round Qualify, losing away to Histon. With the FA Cup exit, Godmanchester focused on the FA Vase, winning games against West Essex, Great Yarmouth and Holbeach United
to reach the 4th Round and a home tie against Sporting Khalsa. Godmanchester won the game and a faced a 5th round tie away against Scholing FC. Unfortunately, Godmanchester were found to have fielded an illegible player against Sporting Khalsa and thus were disqualified. Despite this disappointment the Club went on to win The Hunts Senior Cup for the 2nd time, The Hinchingbrooke Cup and the Mayors Cup. Our reserves have appointed Alex Ramos as manager and Stephen Hurst as his assistant. Stephen will also have a role as reserves player. Godmanchester Rovers is very much a family orientated club and most of the improvements to the facilities have been carried out by the committee, volunteers and friends of the club. 90% of the current first team squad are local lads with seven of them from local families. The 2019 -20 season sees the club participating in the Thurlow Nunn Premier, Cambs Mead Plant 1B and the Thurlow Nunn Under 18 Youth League. Additionally, the club has Junior Youth sides between the ages of U7 and U15 playing under the Godmanchester Town FC name.
Player Profiles 2019/20 Ollie Drake – Head Coach
him. Errol McGammon - Assistant Errol stepped up to Ollie’s assistant last season and made an instant impact, combining his understanding of sports fitness with his understanding of the game. Errol has been around the non-league game for years and brings a wealth of knowledge to the coaching team. Tom Sweeney – Coach Joined Goddy having worked alongside the gaffer at various other clubs. Combines his work with the goalkeepers with opposition information and performance analysis. Still looking to complete his UEFA B licence, he has a coaching degree and a developing tactical knowledge about the game. Kev Nixon – Kit Man Kitman Kev is exactly the sort of person who makes a non-league club run. If there is a job that Killer hasn’t done we are yet to find it (and if we do he will no doubt have a go). A top bloke and someone you want fighting for you not against you! Rich Cosbey U18s manager who has become the link between the youngsters and the senior teams. Goddy man through and through, who was ever present during preseason. Will be a useful addition to the coaching staff this season!
The gaffer is going into his third full season at The Farm, and after winning two cups last season the expectations will only be higher this year. Ollie has a strong idea about how football should be played and the commitment levels he wants from his players.
Paul France
Steve Drake – Assistant
Niall Conroy (GK)
Mr Motivator. As passionate as anybody about Goddy, Stevo is constantly looking for ways in which he can support the progress of the club, on and off the field. Very popular in the dressing room, the place wouldn’t be the same without
Returned to Goddy last summer after a few seasons in the higher leagues and immediately showed his quality. A season of high quality performances meant that he was one of the first players to be tied down for this season. Big personality in the dressing room.
Mr Performance Analysis. Another who has stepped up from the U18s and shown exactly why he brings another dimension to the first team coaching group. Exciting to have Paul on board for the season!
Reece King
season.
Harrison Radwell
Winger-turned-full-back is another with a fantastic attitude who does everything which is asked of him. Arguably Goddy’s Mr Consistent, Reece has shown good quality in possession on top of his excellent defensive work.
Austen Diaper Last season’s Manager’s Player of the Season will want to show the same form again this time around. Incredibly versatile and quality wherever he plays, Austin has exactly the attitude that managers and teammates love.
Stepped up from the u18s at the end of last season, and did enough to be invited in for pre-season. Showed the quality which we knew he had and will be an asset due to his strength and speed. Will be another exciting prospect on either wing for Goddy.
Ross Munro
Harry McGreggor
Quality in possession, deadly from free kicks and sees things which others don’t, Ross took the chance in pre-season to ensure that he was a permanent fixture in the starting line-up once the season started. Looks to be fitter than we have ever seen him and this could just be his season.
Another new signing for this season, who instantly made an impression during pre-season with some moments of real quality. Once Harry has settled in he could quite easily make the No.10 shirt his own. One to watch.
Charlie Bowen Club captain for the coming season and arguably the best Centre Back in the league. Bones is fully committed to everything he does and has shown his leadership qualities already. Despite being brilliant defensively, he might be best known for his rampaging runs out of defence. Jake Burton Came back into the first team fold during the second half of last season and showed that he had something to offer. His wholehearted performances meant he was quickly trusted in pressure situations. Tom Spark Another who played in a variety of positions last season but will be aiming to make a central role his own for the coming season. Sparky has great quality in possession and an ability to glide past players at speed. Will be looking to add more goals and assists to his game. Mike Hyem Another who came back from the higher leagues to re-sign for Godmanchester 2 seasons ago. Captained the side last season and showed his experience with a number of important goals and assists. A key member of the Goddy squad, his experience will be vital in helping develop the younger players in the squad this season. Jack Chandler Mr Unproven from 2 seasons ago is the biggest success story having stepped up from Hardwick with the gaffer. Over 50 goals from out-wide is an outstanding return and we are delighted that Bingy is returning for a 3rd
Jonathon Hall No-nonsense defender re-signed at Goddy after a spell away. Equally adept at left back or in the middle Jonny will quickly show exactly why the gaffer was desperate to get him back at the club. James Hall Another who has re-signed for Goddy for this season. Strong, good in the air and with a great left foot, Jimmy is equally adept up front or on the wing. Will be a complete handful to all defenders who come up against him this season. Arron MkCay Re-joins after 6 months away from Goddy due to other commitments. Azza can either play at centre back or up front and will be used in both positions during the season. Combines height, speed and ability on the ball which will be a high asset for Goddy. Cav King Stepped up from Brampton last season and instantly showed exactly why he should be playing at this level by making one centre back spot his own. Fantastic in the air and improving rapidly with the ball at his feet, Cav is quickly becoming one of Goddy’s most important players.
Tom Lloyd Stepped up from the reserves at times last season and took a full part in pre-season this year. Showed quality in possession and an improving understanding of his responsibilities without the ball. Reece White Another signed for this season who can play anywhere across the back 4. Showed a great attitude during preseason, takes responsibility defensively and comfortable in possession. Chris Hyem Mr Godmanchester has been around the club for about as long as anyone can remember, who has done just about everything to get the club to where it is today. When fully fit Chris will be an integral part of the team, with a drive and passion which carries others around him. Can usually be heard shouting at his brother. Ellis Ogle Stepped up from Brampton during pre-season and his combination of speed and strength instantly made him an exciting signing. He could well be quicker running with the ball than without, which makes Ellis an incredibly exciting prospect. We can’t wait to see how he goes at this level.
SOUTHERN LEAGUE CENTRAL DIVISION ONE
St Neots Town Before the match the league table showed little to choose between the two sides but once the game got under way the difference was stunning. The visitors dominated throughout and scored goals almost at will, whilst a flat and uninspired St Neots could only chase shadows. It was the second home match of the campaign and having seen his side ship in five goals on each occasion Manager Marc Abbott must make some decisions quickly. Although the defence looked fragile, they were under almost constant pressure because of their inability to create chances at the other end so it is a rethink that is required bearing in mind that in their two away league matches St Neots have returned with a clean defensive sheet. North Leigh were clearly a more experienced side and they bullied St Neots at times but there will be other sides like this to come later in the season. St Neots made two changes in midfield bringing back Lee Watkins and Jake Noble for his league debut, replacing Joe Sutton and Jacob Joseph and in theory looked a more balanced unit but the side never really found a rhythm against visitors who were on song. The opening phase of the game saw the visitors in control, but St Neots repelled their better efforts from Callum McNish and Joshua Dutton and in their most dangerous attack Stevan Shaw deflected Morgan Williams’ effort, and from the resulting corner an Adam Learoyd header was cleared off the line. However, the pressure told after 21 minutes when the excellent Jorde Ngathe beat his marker on the outside to cross for George Seacole to send a delightful chip over the head over the out of position James

Philp. The home side should have conceded a second shortly afterwards when Shaw was too easily dispossessed but Seacole clear on goal skied his effort. A second goal nine minutes before the break put the visitors firmly in control as from a Morgan Williams corner, Ben Brown got in front of his marker to head home. Worse was to follow because seven minutes later St Neots were guilty of defensive suicide leaving Morgan Williams totally unmarked to knock in a cross from substitute Tyriq Hunte.
and with Dylan Logan on for Bennett they began to look more prominent. Underworked visiting keeper Cavanagh produced an impressive full length save to deny Connor but after Mutswunguma had sent an effort just over the bar Alfie Connor claimed a late consolation goal three minutes from time with a perfectly placed free kick.
A swift response was required from the home side after the break if they were to hope for any reward and they made a positive move introducing Prince Mutswunguma for the out of form Mason Rhiney. The substitute quickly made an impact setting up Sam Bennet who could only shoot the wrong side of a post. North Leigh then had a stroke of luck after 54 minutes when a net bound effort from Lee Watkins was deflected into the arms of goalkeeper Edward Cavanagh who was on the wrong side of his goal. Three minutes later substitute Hunte made his mark again as he pulled the ball back to Morgan Williams whose perfectly placed shot into the roof of the net left Philp helpless. St Neots tried to respond with Alfie Connor firing wide and Jake Kerins shooting over the bar, but these were examples of token defiance against the dominant visiting side. After 64 minutes it was 5-0 when a lengthy effort by Hunte rebounded from the crossbar giving Joshua Dutton the simple chance of tapping in from close range. With almost half an hour remaining there could have been further goals, but St Neots refused to capitulate

THURLOW NUNN YOUTH LEAGUE HOLBEACH UNITED U 18 1 A very inexperienced St Neots Youth team with no less than seven of the fifteen players taking part making their team debut, recorded an outstanding victory at Holbeach. They looked in control throughout the match and the host side never gave up but did not score their consolation goal until a minute before the final whistle. St Neots’ officials were delighted with a performance and level of commitment shown by the players most of whom are still sixteen and therefore qualify for two seasons this level. Holbeach began strongly and in their first attack Cyprian Garlikowski did well to get back behind his goalkeeper to clear off the line and then Dylan Peverall used pace to go clear but visiting custodian Dylan Martin did well to save at full stretch. Gradually St Neots settled and began to knock the ball about well, creating their own openings. After 24 minutes Dan Olive crossed accurately to the far post and Callum Hills rose to open the scoring with a wellplaced header. At the other end Peverall was
ST NEOTS TOWN U18 2
proving a nuisance and he twice shot wide after good team moves but St Neots were continuing to have the edge as first Max Smalley and then Callum Hills were close to increasing the lead. Martin produced a good save to deny Luke Fox from a set piece and on the stroke of half time another promising St Neots attack was illegally halted, earning Louie Garner a booking. The start of the second period saw St Neots well in control. A snap-shot by Reif Clarke beat the keeper but rebounded from the woodwork and then the same player was denied as keeper Daniel Kimber dived bravely at his feet. Another attack saw Dan Olive fire narrowly over the bar and he then became the second visiting player to be denied by the woodwork. Both sides sent on substitutes, but the match rhythm was maintained and in a breakaway attack Martin had to save at the feet of Joshua Ling. With eleven minutes left St Neots were rewarded for their efforts when a misplaced clearance by home keeper Kimber gifted Reif Clarke with
an opening he gratefully accepted and at 2-0 St Neots were able to see out the final few minutes despite conceding that late consolation goal to substitute Jack Holland. St Neots: Martin, Olive, Tull, Watkins, Howell, Garlikowski, Crosby, Smalley, Clarke, Joseph, Hills Subs used: Clark, Southwood, Ferry and Ma tzk. Cards: Tull (Y – 48 mins)
