Greenie’s Greeting Mike Green

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium for today’s Betvictor Southern League Division One Central match.

Today we extend a very warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of NORTH

LEIGH FC and we hope you all enjoy your first visit to St Neots Town before travelling home safely to Oxfordshire later this evening.

Since our last outing here in the disappointing 5-2 defeat to Yaxley, our fortunes (and performances) have improved somewhat. First up was a tricky looking visit to Thurlow Nunn Premier Division side Godmanchester Rovers in the Emirates FA Cup Preliminary round and a difficult match was exactly what we got. In searing temperatures our plight was made even harder with the dismissal of Joe Sutton early on but massive credit to all the boys who, after going a goal down, dug in and kept battling away and were rewarded when SAM BENNETT opened his Saints account, slotting home the equaliser and keeping us in the hat for the First Round Qualifying draw. Should we navigate a safe passage past Rovers in Tuesday’s (3rd September), we will face BIGGLESWADE TOWN here at the Premier Plus Stadium on Saturday 7th September. Just forty-eight hours later and in similar weather conditions, we travelled then short distance to Kempston Rovers, who numbered one time football league striker Izale McCloud among their ranks and we came away with a very good performance, a clean sheet, two goals and most importantly, three points. Goals came from an ALFIE CONNOR penalty and skipper JAKE KERINS popped up with an absolute cracker at a corner. Well done boys and also a huge well done and thank you to all who have supported the lads on the road so far this season, all very much appreciated by everyone involved at the Club. One player leaving us is young striker JOE RIDER, who has been

rewarded with a two year scholarship deal at Cambridge United after impressing during Pre-Season, so please join us in congratulating Joe and wishing him all the best for his future.

Back to today then and we face a side we’ve not played at any level

before. They have started the season with a similar record to ourselves with a win, a draw and a defeat in their first three games, beating Wantage Town 2-1 at home in their last outing on Monday afternoon.

Please get behind the lads from the first whistle. One thing

is for certain, we will be looking to extend our decent run of form and nothing less than 100% will be given by all the players. Until next time…

From The Dugout… With Manager

Today we welcome North Leigh FC to the Premier Plus Stadium. We hope all their supporters and club officials present to watch the match enjoy the visit. Reflecting on the previous few games, starting with the Yaxley fixture (home match, Tuesday

evening) with a disappointing scoreline of 5-2 we felt that we were undone by a more robust, know how team that were very clinical in and around the box that evening. Take nothing away from Yaxley, they had a game plan, sticking to it very well - unfortunately for us we very much got exposed that night.

However, the players showed fantastic courage on the Saturday away at Godmanchester in the FA cup - drawing 1-1 and forcing a replay which is due to take place this Tuesday coming. The players showed their grit and determination to force their way back into the game after having Joe Sutton sent off. The players stuck to the task, defending as a team - staying in the game and eventually creating a few chances, one of which Sam Bennett took excellently. The players showed a positive attitude throughout and with the draw for the next round being made, the winners of Tuesday night’s replay will have home advantage v Bigglewade Town.

Next up was a bank holiday Monday game away at Kempston - in tough conditions the players put in a really mature performance, controlling key moments and long periods of the game. The boys once again worked very hard, showed grit when needed but also real quality when needed. A very professional performance in our opinion against an experienced side.

On the injury front, with a couple recovering from niggles and being away, it will only be Ben

Bradley who won’t feature as he continues his recovery from a toe injury sustained in the 1st week of preseason - we hope to have a very influential player back fit soon. Jake Noble showed what an impact he will have on the team with a strong performance at Godmanchester, followed by a 30min stint away at Kempston on Monday.

We hope to see as many supporters at the game Saturday- continuing the fantastic support from last week and beyond, trust me, the players really appreciate every bit of positive support given to them...back them! Myself, Sean & Matty look forward to the journey

OPPONENT SPOTLIGHT

NORTH LEIGH FC Year founded: 1908 Chairman: Edward Martin Club Website: www.pitchero.com/clubs/northleighfc

WELCOME ESPECIALLY TO OUR VISITORS NORTH LEIGH FC FOR OUR FIRST EVER MEETING .

Enjoy the match

North Leigh is an Oxfordshire village close to Witney and has a population of just over 2,000. It progressed to the Southern League via the Hellenic League and is one of five Oxfordshire clubs in the Southern League Central Division One this season. Last season North Leigh finished seventeenth in the table some three points shy of the relegation zone. This season they drew one (away at Thame) and lost one (at home to Berkhamsted) of their opening league matches and so (like us) began with one point from their two opening matches. Last Saturday they were engaged in the FA Cup Preliminary Round travelling to face lower graded opponents and after their match at at Aylesbury Vale Dynamos they returned home with a victory by the odd goal in nine. Then on Monday made it a doubly successful weekend with a home league victory over league new boys Wantage Town. This propelled them to eleventh in the fledgling league table just one place ahead of our lads on goal difference.

History - North Leigh

John Walker

North Leigh FC was formed in 1908, but it was only following the Second World War that the club started to make its mark in the Witney and District League. The club won the Witney and District League Premier Division title seven times in the 1950s and also enjoyed success in the Oxfordshire Senior Cup. In the 1980s the club resumed its trophy winning habits with five successive Witney and District League titles earning it a place in the Hellenic League Division 1 for the season 1990/91. The club enjoyed a good first season in the Hellenic League, finishing in 4th position and being the Division’s highest goal scorers apart from Champions Cinderford Town. In the club’s second season it again achieved 4th position, averaging two points per game, scoring 84 goals in the process. In 1997/98 the club reached the second round of the FA Vase for the third time before losing to Elmore. They finished the season in 4th place in

the Hellenic League Premier Division, capping their season off by reaching the final of the Oxfordshire Senior Cup where they were only narrowly beaten by their West Oxfordshire rivals Witney Town 1-0 after extra time. The season 2001/02 was without doubt been the most successful in the clubs’ history to date. After a superb season of consistently high performances and an epic struggle with both Gloucester United and Yate Town throughout the season to occupy top spot, the club eventually succeeded in winning for the very first time, the Premier Division title. The club also reached the final of both the Oxfordshire Senior Cup and the Hellenic League Challenge Cup. In season 2006/07 after a head to head contest with Slimbridge and narrowly finishing behind them after an epic struggle and a particularly strong finish to the season, including a double win home & away against them, the club were severely disappointed to learn of their withdrawal from promotion to the Southern League at a stage too late for them to be replaced them even though North Leighs home ground had by now received the necessary FA approval to play

at the higher level. In 2007/08 in a truly magnificent finish to the season the team overhauled the long-term leaders of the division, Almondsbury Town in their very last league game, winning the league title and promotion on goal difference. In addition and a few weeks prior to winning the league title, the club had won the Oxfordshire Senior Cup for the first time in their history defeating an Oxford United team in the quarter final and Banbury United (Southern League Premier Division) in the final at the Kassam Stadium, Oxford. Improved facilities at the Eynsham Park ground include floodlights, a stand incorporating approximately 150 seats, and for the start of season 1998/99, a £100,000 changing room block including a committee room, kitchen and public toilets. Further improvements which have been completed include significant pitch drainage work, 2 metre high ground enclosure fencing, new dugouts and turnstile spectator entrance facilities with a new 175 seater stand with disabled spectator and press facilities alongside the pitch, replacing the previous seated stand which has now been converted to undercover terracing for standing spectators. This has helped this progressive club to consolidate its status in senior football and achieve its ambition of Southern League football.

Player Profiles 2019/20 Eddie Cavanagh - Bought in by the management team in 2018, Eddie missed only a handful of games last year. Body on the line, the modern style goalkeeper came up vital on multiple occasions last year with some stunning saves. Muhammed Otuyo - At just 20 years old, Mo will undoubtedly be a big name for the future and a big contender for the no.1 shirt this season. At 6”6’, he is a giant between the posts and his vocal confidence behind the backline is certainly a boost to the team. Ben Brown - Our skipper rejoined in the club in 2018 after leaving in the 2013/14 season. Cemented as the first team captain, solid at the back and calm under pressure, his experience was essential in our unbeaten run to survive when times get tough at the end of last season. Alfie Grant - Returning for a 2nd season with the Millers and alongside brother Harry Grant, Alfie’s defensive work rate is admired by the fans. He has a great understanding of the game at such a young game but most importantly, his headed goal on the last day of the season against league champions Peterborough helped North Leigh to complete the great escape. Andy Gunn - Enjoying his 2nd stint at the Millers, Andy has played for Oxford United and Banbury Town amongst others. Possesses a calmness on the

ball, is great in the air and is strong in communication. A solid defender who has the experience and commitment to the cause. Kynan Isaac - New to Eynsham Park for this season, left back Kynan is another who brings bags full of high level experience. In his senior career he has played at Luton Town, Oxford City, Banbury United, Hemel Hempstead and Stratford Town. Dan James - After a lot of last season on the bench, Dan came good near the end playing a huge part in our fight for survival. He is a defensive rock and always willing to throw his body on the line to black a shot. Adam Learoyd - After helping Oxford City win promotion to the National League South in 2012, Adam moved to Didcot Town and has spent 5 seasons with the Diddy making over 250 appearances and captaining the side to the playoffs in 2018. The experienced centre back now joins the Millers hungry for a new challenge. Jordy Ngathe - Attacking minded right sided defender who takes on a modern style, comfortable on the ball and with an eye for goal. Jordy first came to the attention of the North Leigh management team during a man-of-the-match performance playing against us in the Southern League Cup in 2018. Michael Alexis - Once described as a rolls-royce of a midfielder, Michael brings quality and a in

depth non-league experience to the club. Previous stints at Oxford United and Burton paint their own picture. Ekow Elliott - Ekow is one of the few who holds Conference level experience under his belt and it shows in the vast array of skills he possesses. His blistering pace and ability to both score and create goals is sure to make an early impression in the new season. Billy Gillett - With great technical ability, Billy joins the Millers following a fantastic season with Hellenic Premier Division Ardley United. He is a tricky winger with an eye for goal and able to create opportunities for others from out of nothing. Harry Grant - The heart of the midfield in the latter of the 2018/19 season our tough tackling box-to-box midfielder has proved invaluable in motivating the young Millers when times got tough last season. Previous stints at Sheff Weds and Gillingham, Harry was signed from Reading City – In 2018 he played in the FA Vase final at Wembley. Roger James - Originally brought up through the youth ranks, North Leigh fans will know of Roger well. Take your eyes off him and he’s gone. The dangerous winger can turn on a sixpence and his pace and sheer determination makes him almost unbeatable 1-on-1. Rory Linford-Pill - Now going into his 4th season with the Millers, local talent Rory was a vital part of last season’s fight

for survival and the holding midfielder is only getting better with time. He is strong in the tackle, good in the air and a great passer of the ball.

the dynamic of our attack. With fantastic hold up play, a burst of pace and an eye for goal our New No.9 delights the fans at Eynsham Park.

Callum McNish - Part of the clubs most successful season in 2016/17 Callum returns after a stint at Division One rivals Didcot Town. A powerful Midfielder with a slick passing game which is encompassed by a great desire to be on the winning side.

George Seacole - Adored fan favourite George has put away 71 goals in the previous three seasons for the Millers. Every year the Eynsham Park fax machine goes wild with approaches, some even announce his signature, others claim to have signed him who have never seen him play. Leaves defenders wanting and throws in the assists. Clinical.

Alfie Saunders - Naturally an Attacking Midfielder, Alfie adapted his game to be North Leigh’s utility man during last seasons campaign. Great with both feet and has a thunderous strike on him, he was a product of our development team. Morgan Williams - A North Leigh legend who has re-signed for the 2019/20 season following a couple of years away. A strong running left sided attacking midfielder player who has the ability to been a match winner from out of nowhere. Josh Dutton-Black - Having spent 2 seasons at Eynsham Park back in 2013, Josh has since developed a lot with his time at Didcot Town and abroad. Now with the stamina of a marathon runner, his knowledge of the game has also come a long way and he has looked deadly in front of goal so far in pre-season. Tyriq Hunte - Signed late in the 2018/19 Season Tyriq was inspirational in the “Great Escape” scoring 2 goals on debut and going on to change

Aaron Woodley - Returning from a lengthy injury spell, super striker Aaron is set to start his 5th season at Eynsham Park. With his eye for goal looking sharper than ever, he will undoubtedly be making a few headlines throughout the season and will be a great asset to this strong side. Lance Williams - Returning to Eynsham Park from local rivals Didcot Town, talented midfielder Lance has shown his abilities in previous seasons. Another of the 2016/17 season squad, he helped the Millers lift the Oxfordshire Senior Cup and set a record in both the FA Cup and FA Trophy. He is excellent on the ball and his experience in the midfield is sure to be a welcome sign to his fellow teammates.

FA CUP PRELIMINARY ROUND

Godmanchester Rovers 1 An heroic performance by ten man St Neots earned them a second FA Cup chance against Step Five neighbours Godmanchester Rovers after playing for an hour one man short. That was because after 32 minutes Joe Sutton picked up a straight red card for kicking out at an opponent after he had been fouled. Because of the upcoming Bank Holiday programme, the replay will be at the Premier Plus Stadium on Tuesday week (3rd September). Played in oppressive heat the two teams tried to serve up a competitive performance, but they will be happy for the replay to be in cooler early evening conditions. The early dismissal handed the impetus to the host side, but they failed to capitalise whilst the hard-working St Neots side probably deserved their second chance as recompense for their gritty determination. There were memories of the previous meeting of the two clubs three months earlier when Godmanchester handed out a Cup Final thrashing to their opponents, but goals were always going to be at a premium in this contest. St Neots recalled Tim N’Kala and Jake Noble for Mason Rhiney and Sam Gomersall who were both on the bench. Godmanchester looked the more positive in the opening phase of the game and carved out some early chances. After 12 minutes from a James Hall corner, defender Charlie Bowen blasted the ball high over the bar and in the next five minutes Josh Dawkin was twice prominent bringing a good save from James Philp

St Neots Town 1

and shooting wide when well-placed after neat work by Micky Hyem. The first half suddenly saw a change in the pattern of play after Joe Sutton was dismissed. St Neots took some time to reorganise and seemed happy to defend in numbers with Dawkin again breaking through the defence to shoot across the face of goal. The first half ended in stalemate with neither side either able or willing to take the initiative. The second period livelier and more competitive. St Neots replaced Tim N’Kala with Sam Gomersall and took the weight off their defence by utilising long ball tactics. However, the breakthrough came just five after the restart when Dawkin crossed from the left and former Saint James Hall was left enough space to side foot the ball inside the far post to put Godmanchester in front. That could have signalled the incentive for them to take advantage of their numeric superiority, but it seemed to spur St Neots who had efforts by Jake Kerins and Sam Bennett just off target. Johnny Hall moved forward to bring an important save from Philp and just past the hour in the same attack Dawkin saw his fierce effort parried and when the ball was not cleared James Hall saw his effort blocked by a defender. St Neots sent on Alfie Connor and began to look more comfortable and using their front players wide they stretched the home defence. There were just twelve minutes remaining when Sam Bennett rounded Johnny Hall and his pace took him clear to unleash a low shot under the dive

of goalkeeper Niall Conroy to level the scores. Seven minutes later St Neots could have stolen the victory when Gomersall sent a delightful pass inside the home defence and from a similar position to where he scored his goal, Sam Bennett put his free shot wide of the far post. St Neots: Philp, Kerins, Smith, Noble, Goode, Shaw, Sutton, Watkins, N’Kala, Bennett, Mutswunguma Subs: Gomersall (for N’Kala 46 mins), Connor (for Mutswunguma 70 mins), Rhiney, Joseph, Walker and McCormick. Cards: Sutton (RED – 32 mins), Kerins (Y – 27 mins) Goal: Bennett (78 mins) Godmanchester: Conroy, King, Hall (Johnny), Spark, Bowen, Munro, Dawkin, Diaper, Hall (James), Hyem (Micky), Chandler Subs: McGregor (for Chandler 77 mins), Hyem (Chris) (for Spark 87 mins), White, King (Reece) and Radwell Cards: none Goals: James Hall (50 mins) Referee: Lewis Morgan (Lincoln) Attendance: 180 John Walker

SOUTHERN LEAGUE CENTRAL DIVISION ONE

Kempston Rovers 0 St Neots recorded their first league victory of the season at Kempston making their first trip to the home of their Bedfordshire hosts for twelve years. In stiflingly hot conditions the two sides did well to serve up some end-to-end football and the key to the victory was the soundness of the St Neots defence and goalkeeper that seldom looked like being breached. Another clean sheet on the road delighted Manager Marc Abbott and the welcome three points was achieved despite their being three team changes with Lee Watkins unavailable, Jake Noble starting on the bench and Prince Mutswunguma injured. With one win and one defeat in the league to date, Kempston had returned from the East coast on Saturday with an FA Cup victory at Gorleston but they were unable to breach the solid St Neots back line. Much travelled ex-Football League striker Izale McLeod produced the first attempt on goal after nine minutes for the home side but James Philp was quickly down at his near post to push the ball for a corner. At the other end Alfie Connor found Sam Bennett in the penalty area but his free header was too high, and then at the other end another free header by Jake Newman, this time from a Gareth Hunt corner, was bundled off the line by a defender. However, after these two Kempston openings the match settled with St Neots looking comfortable in possession. After 20 minutes Joe Sutton looped a header over the bar after a searching run by Jake

St Neots Town 2

Kerins, but two minutes later the same St Neots player was scythed down as he made for the bye line and a penalty kick was awarded confidently tucked away by Alfie Connor. Home keeper Carl Knox then saved well from Sutton but Kempston came back just before the break with Ben Shepherd volleying wide following a Gareth Hunt corner and then a Hunt free kick was comfortably gathered by James Philp. The half ended with a McLeod volley blocked on the line by Stevan Shaw and St Neots went to the break just about deserving their slender advantage. Kempston tried to vary their approach after the break with two substitutes on and an extra player in attack. However, the significant breakthrough came after 52 minutes when a quickly taken short corner by Connor found skipper Jake Kerins unmarked and he produced a superbly struck narrow angled shot into the roof of the net past the surprised home keeper to give St Neots their two goals advantage. Briefly Kempston went on the offensive but limited to lengthy shots on goal, Shepherd and McLeod saw efforts comfortably handled. St Neots sent on Jacob Noble and St Neots began to dominate centre field possession whilst N’Kala’s pace down the flanks kept the home defence busy. The most significant second half incident came after 72 minutes when from a Hunt corner, Alfie Powell was given too much room and his powerful header produced a significant one-handed reaction save from Philp. Had that gone

in it would have handed the initiative to the home side but they began to flag in the heat and there few serious attempts on the St Neots goal in the last twenty minutes. Meantime visiting substitutes, recent signing Dylan Logan and Jake Noble, both carved out chances that could have further increased the lead, but both efforts were narrowly off-target. St Neots: Philp, Kerins, Smith, Connor, Goode, Shaw, Sutton, Rhiney, N’Kala, Bennett, Joseph Subs: Noble (for Rhiney 60 mins), Logan (for Bennett 79 mins), Walker (for Joseph 82 mins, and Abbott. Cards: N’Kala (Y – 70 mins) Goals: Connor – pen – (25 mins), Kerins (52 mins) Kempston: Knox, Goodman, Hyde, Wright, Powell, Jones, Boland, Shepherd, Newman, McLeod, Hunt Subs: Stratton (for Newman 46 mins), Beldon (for Jones 46 mins), Dahle (for Hyde 58 mins), McGrath and Shortt. Cards: McLeod (Y – 78 mins), Beldon (Y – 85 mins) Goals: none Referee: Steven Parkinson (Watford) Attendance: 143 John Walker

THURLOW NUNN YOUTH LEAGUE WEST DIVISION 2019/20

This season has heralded the news that yet another island team are hoping to enter the Non-League pyramid. Following in the footsteps of Guernsey, who play at Step 4 and the newly formed Jersey Bulls, who are currently competing in Step 6, a group from the Isle of Man have unveiled plans to create their very own football club, with ambitions to play in the Northwest Counties League in time for the start of next campaign. This is brilliant news both for the Non-League system and players and fans living on the Isle of Man. Last year I went to visit Guernsey, where I thoroughly enjoyed watching a match and have subsequently interviewed their manager Tony Vance on a number of occasions. It was brilliant to see how the island’s community had really embraced the team and the atmosphere on matchday was a superb thing to be a part of. When speaking to Vance it quickly becomes clear just how much pride he has taken in the project and the importance that it has had in developing young players on the island. Whereas before, making the jump into the professional ranks was extremely hard for young footballers on the island, they now have the opportunity to showcase their talents in England throughout the year. One of the big drawbacks of starting an island team is the high costs involved, which include having to pay for the travel of both themselves and their opponents, however both Guernsey and Jersey Bulls have demonstrated how, with the support of their local communities, these steep financial commitments can be managed. The fact that Jersey Bulls were able to attract almost 1000 fans for their very first fixture at the start of the month shows both how island clubs can develop revenue and help to cultivate a special following across the community. The Isle of Man bid is being led by National Team manager Paul Jones. When interviewing him last week I was immediately struck by his immense passion for football on the island and his determination to see the project through. There have been plans in the pipeline to start a team on the Isle of Man for almost 15 years but for one reason or another the project has never come to fruition, until now. I wish Paul and his colleagues the absolute best of luck in creating a club because these island teams have the potential to unite their communities in such a unique way.
