ASSISTANT MANAGERS NOTES
MATT SPRING Good evening and welcome back to what I’m guessing is going to be a cold evening here at the Cozy Stadium. I guess there is only one thing to talk about, Saturdays insane game! I’ve been in football for a very long time and I have never been involved in such a bizarre game. I’m sure like me every St Neots fan was in the end happy that we came away with 3 points but it’s disappointing conceding five goals at home, we need to take from that and keep improving as a team.
management team have to do. On a positive note from Saturday it was good to see Drew, Dills and Ben Mackey all scoring. Especially for Drew as he has a great goal scoring record but has been going through a dry spell. Also great for Dills as I think that was his first of the season and Ben’s first since his return to the club, so all round it was great to see them get on the score sheet.
POSITIVE Although getting the 3 points was key, there’s a lot to learn from games like that and that’s what we as a
REBELS Looking at tonight’s game it should be another tough one. Slough are sitting mid table and doing quiet well,

they have some good players and will be looking forward to coming to such good facilities and a fantastic pitch. Lastly I’d like to end by saying keep up the great support and lets see together how far we can take this wonderful club. I hope your all wrapped up warm! Enjoy the game, Springy.

Our Previous Meeting Here Evo-Stik Southern League Central (10/March/2012) St Neots Town
0-1
In front of a bumper crown of 1060 – more than twice the previous Central division record this season – Slough took what could be a decisive step in the title race as they recorded a league double over St Neots to regain the divisional leadership. It was a tight match fiercely contested throughout and St Neots must be rueing their inability to convert their much superior share of possession into goals. For a side that has notched 91 goals this season their finishing was very disappointing whilst their opponents showed just how important stringent defence and a single goal scored can be as they recorded their fifteenth clean sheet in 33 league games this season. It was a compelling contest to watch and at times with Junior Kanuda in one of his mesmeric moods St Neots were guilty of playing too much football when a more direct approach may have been more fruitful. Ultimately St Neots were muscled out of the match by a visiting side totally committed to taking all three points home with them. Now St Neots must make their game in hand count if they are to regain the league leadership. St Neots made a really positive start winning five corners in the first ten minutes but they quickly found that high crosses into the box would be
Slough Town gratefully gobbled up by the tall defenders. Stefan Moore jinked through but saw his shot blocked and Ben Mackey sliced the rebound wide. The first significant save came from visiting keeper James Warrington who beat away a Kanuda shot at full stretch and then clean through Moore saw his shot rebound off the advancing keeper. Slough’s first serious attempt on goal came after 16 minutes from their first corner but the finish was wide and at the other end Mackey had a rising shot well saved. St Neots then became ragged as if some frustration was setting in and with ten minutes to go before the break Slough set up a double attack. From a Paul Coyne corner Sean Sonner outjumped his marker to crash a header against the cross bar and when the ball was not cleared Ollie Burgess crossed for Sonner to direct a neat header beyond the reach of Michael Duggan. Right on half time Dan Jacob had two chances to level the scores but he blazed his first over the bar after good work by Moore and then was foiled as Warrington dived bravely at his feet to smother. The second half saw Slough employ containing tactics as they pulled more players back into midfield to try to smother

St Neots attacking moves. Far too many of St Neots final passes were not good enough to give the front runners any chance to test the defence and some of the tackling was rough and ready not punished by a lenient official. Mackey shot over the bar and Kanuda got far enough forward to bring the save of the match from Warrington after 62 minutes. St Neots then decided to vary their attack bringing on Shane Tolley for Mackey and Rashid Kamara for Hilliard. However despite no lack of effort St Neots most promising move saw their best chance involving Kamara and Moore who set up Tolley. He got the ball in the net only to be ruled narrowly offside. Michael Duggan for so long a spectator did make one excellent save to deny Slough substitute Jerome Anderson seven minutes from the end but on the day it was not to be for St Neots.

DREW ROBERTS TUCKS AWAY THE 1ST
ST NEOTS TOWN 6 DORCHESTER TOWN 5 06:12:2014 / Southern Premier Division / Att 292 / Referee: J Turner (Kings Lynn) St Neots Manager Gary King gave his side the biggest shake up of the season making six changes from the side that had lost midweek at Sudbury in the FA Trophy replay. Two of those were due to injury (Ryan Frater and Ed Adjei) but the rest of the changes gave a fresher look to the side including the naming of Dave Hutton who went straight into the side in midfield following his midweek signing from Dunstable Town. However no one could have predicted what the outcome would be as St Neots won a nerve tingling eleven goals thriller that included six goals coming in a 16 minutes first half spell. St Neots had scored just twice in their last five league matches and although this performance arrested their goal famine there will be questions asked about the defensive performance. St Neots led four times before falling behind at 5-4 with just 18 minutes left but that situation was tailor made for local favourite Ben Mackey who came on as a substitute for the last 16 minutes to snatch the winning goal – his 45th goal in just 57 starts for the club. St Neots were put on the way by one of their earliest goals of the season as new signing Dave Hutton making his first appearance linked with Drew Roberts to set up the striker for a low finish that beat the visiting keeper at his near post after just three minutes. However that advantage lasted just ten minutes before Dorchester levelled in their first attack when
Robbie Matthews was allowed time and space to collect a Jack Odam cross to beat Paul Bastock. It was then all St Neots for a spell as Gavin Hoyte had a header from a Matt Spring corner deflected wide of goal, Chris Dillon was denied by visiting keeper Alan Walker-Harris who smothered the ball at his feet after a clever through ball from Roberts, and a speculative Dillon lob was only a foot wide with the keeper out of position. After 27 minutes a searing cross by Lewis Hilliard was me by a flying header from Drew Roberts to claim his second goal but ninety seconds later it was parity again as Nathan Walker beat a thinly veiled attempted offside trap to score from close range. It was then 3-2 when Hutton supplied his second assist for Roberts to complete his second hat trick for St Neots but Dorchester replied wither four minutes when from a free kick Christopher Dillon scored with a shot that Paul Bastock pushed onto the post before it finished up in the net. Roberts then became provider as he set up Lewis Hilliard for St Neots fourth goal five minutes before the break but three minutes later Mason Walsh rapped a shot under the diving body of Bastock with the keeper appearing unsighted.
After eight first half goals in a breathless first half defensive advice offered to both teams seemed to be effective – but only for 27 minutes. During this lull St Neots had the better of the exchanges although Bastock made two important saves to deny Andrew Robinson and Jack Odam. At the other end Walker cleared a Hilliard shot off the goal line with the keeper beaten and then probably against the run of play Dorchester got themselves in front for the first time after 72 minutes as Mason Walsh exchanged passes to set up Jack Odam for the visitors’ fifth goal. St Neots response was swift sending on Ben Mackey and playing an all out attacking formation with three strikers. It bore the required result because with twelve minutes left in a training pitch move a Matt Spring free kick was headed back across goal by Gavin Hoyte for striker Chris Dillon to score his first goal since the pre-season friendly matches. Now it was all one way towards the visiting goal as Walker-Harris saved a Spring shot with his legs and with four minutes left Roberts crossed from the left and Ben Mackey almost broke the net with his fierce volley to win the match. WORLD’S BEST DEFENDERS 10. LEONARDO BONUCCI (JUVENTUS) The second member of Juventus’ regular centre-back trio to feature in our list is the imposing Leonardo Bonucci, who has become a major player with both his club and the Italian national side since moving to Turin from Bari in 2010. Dominant aerially and an excellent man marker, Bonucci is a master of the arts of centre-back play. However, on top of his prowess in defensive situations, he is also comfortable joining in with his side’s possession play. Should he ever leave the Juventus Stadium, Bonucci would have no shortage of suitors. For now, though, he is part of a unit that is proving to be one of the best around at both club and international level. He is, indeed, another that falls firmly into the category of “modern centre-back” on the list.

Defenders never really get the recognition they deserve we take a look at the 10 best defenders in the game today.
09. DAVID LUIZ (PSG) Wherever David Luiz ended up on this list, his inclusion was always going to be contentious. There are those who believe he is simply a hopeless defender, while, on the other hand, there are those who would place him at the very top level. He may not be at that level quite yet, but it should not be overlooked that he is a masterful defender. Yes, there have been mistakes since his arrival in England, but Luiz has every attribute needed to be a leading centre-back in world football. There has been significant improvement also and, while his comfort on the ball saw him used in midfield last campaign, it would be a major surprise to see him anywhere other than in central defence this year. Tall, strong, skilful and determined, Luiz will be among the world’s best defenders for some years yet. His performances at the Confederations Cup while under enormous pressure will have done a lot to silence his doubters.

THE CHAIRMANS’ VIEWS
BRING ON THE BUS! A warm welcome to Slough Town, Officials, Players and Supporters, I hope you enjoy your evening with us. We had a great season competing with Slough for the championship of the Southern League Central division a few years ago and it was a cracking season for both Clubs. I remember it all very clearly when Slough came to us in front of over 1,000 supporters and won the game. Maybe that was the best thing that could have happened that day as we had to do something about that defeat and so we did, a few player additions and a winning run that gave us an opportunity to get to the winning post. I think the turning point in that season was when Slough lost to their landlords Beaconsfield I think it was 0-4 and the following night we had a very tough fixture away to Rugby Town where we came away with all 3 points. Yes a great season and I’m very happy to see Slough in the Premier Division, as their supporters certainly deserve it. Looking back to my programme notes from last Saturday and the frustration I had by going out of the Trophy just goes to show, a few days in football can make a difference. Against Dorchester we really showed our attacking power and with the strike force we have I believe we can really intimidate the opposition. Having lost our “mojo” if you like for a few games the goals just kept going in at Saturdays match. Unfortunately we conceded 5 at the other end, yes I know we have some
work to do in that department but lets not put all blame on our defence as I actually thought that because or our attacking flair our midfield forgot their defensive duties. But yes what a game that was 4-4 after 37 minutes has that ever happened before, must be a Google opportunity there.
to score. Now we have to stop the goals going in at the other end and I’m pleased to be able to announce that I have solved that problem with a new back four. I went on Ebay and purchased a big double decker bus, I’m having it painted in our colours and it will be in the starting line up tonight.
Welcome to David Hutton and what a great debut he had for the club. I often talk about square pegs in round holes and sometimes this cannot be avoided as happened in the Dorchester match where we had to play with 2 right backs, having Edd and Josh out we were struggling in that position. However David Hutton came in to the side and being a wide midfielder, yes we were able to play with width down both flanks.
Seriously though if its 1-0 or 6-5 it is still the same goal difference and you get the 3 points, I think I’m trying to convince myself on that one. What a game and so many goals, I doubt if we will ever see that again, mind you anything can happen at this club that’s for sure.
A great success with hutts putting in a great cross for Drew to score and Lewis cutting in from the right

Right onto tonight and a really tight game is expected, it has to be the bus is playing, ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALL Mike
WEIRD FOOTBALL STORIES
FOR STEVE OGRIZOVIC’S EYES ONLY With its moles, sleeper agents, intelligence, counterintelligence, top-secret files protected by impenetrable encryption codes and electronic surveillance, the clandestine world of espionage is not one you would readily associate with famous footballers. Despite Ryan Giggs’s urbane sophistication, rugged good looks and smouldering sex appeal, he is unlikely ever to be considered as a replacement for James Bond should the MI6 agent decide to hang up his Walther PPK. The Manchester United midfielder’s well-documented attempt to keep a secret couldn’t have been less successful if he’d personally called every house in the UK and told the occupants exactly what it was he didn’t want them to know. Of course it’s a sweeping generalisation to suggest that, just because one might not necessarily trust West Ham’s striker Andy Carroll to successfully pull off a clichéd park-bench briefcase swap with a Russian counterpart, it is inconceivable a professional footballer might one day be considered to work for the secret service. However, one can’t help but feel that if the current head of MI6, Sir Robert Sawers, was looking to recruit somebody from the professional ranks to investigate a shadowy crime syndicate run by an evil cat-stroking megalomaniac, the former Coventry City goalkeeper Steve Ogrizovic would hardly be the first port of call, even if he was a notoriously safe pair of hands. Younger readers may not be familiar with the man they call Oggy, an aesthetically challenged former policeman and FA Cup-winning Coventry legend who had a famously crooked nose, made 507 appearances between the sticks for the Sky Blues between 1984 and 2000 and most recently made PAGE 18 /
legend Steve Ogrizovic and protesting his innocence.” Anyone in doubt of Oggy’s popularity among Coventry City supporters was quickly set straight when a whopping total of just under 300 people flocked to sign the petition calling on Kazakhstan to release their hero, a number that, in the intervening nine years, has mushroomed to more than 700. “Please

headlines when he was forced to confirm that, contrary to speculation that he’d been thrown in jail by the Kazakhstani government on suspicion of spying, he was in fact safe and well on the sovereign soil of his native England. According to a petition posted on www.petitiononline.com in 2003, Ogrizovic had been travelling the world using only public transport in an attempt to raise money for a charity called Over The Bar, which was devoted to helping young goalkeepers develop their skills as athletes. On his way through Kazakhstan, the petition informed readers, the unfortunate Ogrizovic had accidentally trespassed on to private military land, resulting in the hapless tourist’s incarceration. “The British embassy has contacted the Kazakhstani government but nothing has come of this,” wrote the author of the Free Steve Ogrizovic appeal. “Here is our petition to Tony Blair and the Kazakhstani government demanding the release of footballing

“He’s obviously innocent and this is no way for a rubbish goalkeeper to have to spend his time,” wrote another. A reporter from the Coventry Evening Telegraph, detecting the whiff of rodent in the air, becoming suspicious of the story of Ogrizovic’s internment and using the kind of dogged investigative techniques for which the names of the Washington Post journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein have long been synonymous, eventually managed to discover that the then academy director wasn’t in fact languishing in a Kazakhstani cooler, by going to the club’s Ryton training ground … and asking him. “This is a complete hoax,” said a slightly surprised Ogrizovic, upon being told of his plight. “I haven’t a clue where it has come from. I haven’t made any trips to Kazakhstan lately – nor am I planning to. I can only assume that with the well-documented breakthroughs in science of late, I have obviously been cloned.” While Oggy’s good humour in the face of such a bizarre and potentially upsetting story is to be commended, it is perhaps worth noting that although he emphatically denied ever having set foot in Kazakhstan, to this day he has never said he isn’t a spy. READ ALL ABOUT IT We take a look at what other non-league clubs are doing that’s making the news this week. POOLE TOWN
Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Division Poole Town have signed Harrison Gilkes, who has just left Sky Bet Championship neighbours AFC Bournemouth. Having signed a short-term deal in the summer, Gilkes has opted to join the Dolphins with his contract with the Cherries coming to an end. The winger earned his first professional deal in the summer of 2012 and was part of the development squad for two and a half seasons. Having spent time out on loan with Southern Division One South & West side AFC Totton last season, he featured in a number of Final Third Development League fixtures and scored in the win against Peterborough United in September.
Hutton played for his country at both under-15/16 levels. Hutton is a 24-year-old attacking midfield player who began his footballing career with Tottenham Hotspur, where he spent three years as a professional. In March 2009, he went on Loan to Cheltenham Town and made his League debut against Leyton Orient a month later. The following May he joined Cheltenham permanently on a one-year deal but was released by the Robins in May 2010. In July 2010 he joined Grimsby Town on trial and played in several pre-season friendlies. After a brief spell with St Albans City he agreed to join the Glenn Hoddle Academy and played several times with their Spanish partner club, Jerez Industrial. Hutton then joined Boreham Wood in October 2011, moving to Hemel Hempstead Town a year later. He joined Dunstable for a transfer fee from Hemel at the start of this season. Saints manager Gary King stated: “We wanted to sign David at the start of the season but were

just too late. However, we have been keeping tabs on him all season and the opportunity to sign a player in a position that we needed has become a great piece of business.” ARLESEY TOWN
Rufus Brevett has mutually agreed to end his term as manager and director of football of Evo-Stik League Southern PremierDivision club Arlesey Town. Chairman Manny Cohen said: “We would like to thank Rufus and his management team for the time and effort they have put into Arlesey this past year and would like to wish them well for the future.” The former Fulham, West Ham United and Queens Park Rangers defender was appointed just over a year ago. However, results have been disappointing this season and have lost their last five league games and also went out of the FA Trophy to Ryman League Premier Division side East Thurrock United at the Second Qualifying Round stage.
BURNHAM
Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Division club Burnham have announced the appointment of Danny Gordon (pictured) and Gareth Risbridger as joint-managers. Gordon began his football career with Aylesbury United`s youth team before developing into an accomplished player for Chesham United, St Albans City, Aylesbury FC and Staines Town. Risbridger, who has a UEFA B license, started out as a youth player with Marlow and progressed to play for Yeovil Town, Southend, Aylesbury United Staines Town and assisted in Slough Towns promotion last season. “I speak on behalf of the Board when I say that their appointment as joint first-team managers and as registered players is not only a positive stride forward for the club, but also an exciting one,” said Burnham chairman Gary Reeves. “Both Danny and Gareth arrive at The Gore having had solid non-League
backgrounds, a large part of which has been spent in the Conference South division. “They bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience that can only benefit Burnham Football Club and they are relishing the challenge ahead. We at Burnham are very excited by this appointment and both Danny and Gareth are fully aware of what we at Burnham are striving to achieve. They have a solid understanding of what we expect and both have bought into the club`s ethos. We wish them a very warm welcome and every success in their new role with us.” Their backroom staff will be announced in due course.

THE BEAUTIFUL GAME
ATTIC FODDER Football surveys across the world show that us British fans are by far the most serious collectors of football memorabilia. Surprised? Come on, we’ll buy almost anything the club shops throw at us won’t we? Does this mean we are the most passionate fans, because we want to own everything we can which bares the club logo? does it mean that worldwide, we have the most disposable income to be in a position to buy this memorabilia? Who knows! Most of us feel that attending the match in the first place is costly enough, and that’s before you buy the programme and the half-time raffle ticket on your way to the club shop! Yet, we still dig deep when we get there and see what’s new. In a years time [perhaps less] I dare say there will be a number of Real Madrid shirts in the attics of many Spanish [and English] homes featuring the name ‘Bale’ on the reverse! I could be wrong but I think the guy is well over rated and won’t last too long at Real Madrid. That would be highly unfortunate for those little Spanish kids (and the grown-ups too) that forked out for the shirt baring his name. Most of us have some degree of collectables hidden away in a corner of the loft, whether it’s a pile of programmes, old scarves or match tickets. Some of us only keep the more memorable items of memorabilia, the special stuff, something signed by our favorite player/s or ticket stub and programme a long-gone final. Then there are those who go totally over the top with shirts, programmes, scarves, badges, stickers, books,
tickets and the list goes on, and on, and on. Call it passion for the sport or pure lunacy; there are fans out there who would give up a kidney for that elusive programme which they’ve been after for donkeys years. In 1999 a survey suggested that British football fans held £15 million worth of memorabilia and it suggested that by 2003, this hoard would be worth double that figure. It’s now 2013 so what’s it all worth today? If only, I had anything worth more than a few quid. Sadly, for the majority, the programmes we have are folded and creased, the scarves are falling apart and the old shirts are bobbled and pulled, shirt sponsors worn away and quite possibly still stained by the beer we drank on the last day of the season to drown our sorrows of yet another mediocre campaign! Lets’ each thank our lucky stars that we don’t support a club barmy
PAGE 22 / ST NEOTS TOWN F.C. V SLOUGH TOWN ISSUE 16
enough to splash-out 85.3 million on a player who can only manage 8 keepy-uppies when unveiled to 30,000 adoring [but very expectant] fans. Incidentally, Bale only made it as far as the bench when in the squad for his country against Macedonia recently. No doubt the ‘Bale’ shirt of Real Madrid will join the old Real shirts of ‘Beckham’, ‘Owen’ and ‘McManaman’ in the lofts of Spanish homes, maybe sooner rather than later! If, after reading this, you feel compelled to dive into the attic in search of your football treasures and fire-up the laptop for an e-bay adventure, don’t blame me if you get less than you wanted for your old souvenirs Enjoy today’s action - be loud, and be proud. TODAY’S VISITORS
SLOUGH TOWN
It is really good to welcome our old friends from Slough into the Premier division to re-live our epic battles in the 2011/12 season A very special welcome to Slough Town our visitors this evening who are making their second visit to the Cozy Stadium for a Southern League engagement. The last time our two sides met here was on 10th March 2012 when both sides were scrapping for the automatic promotion slot from the Central Division to the Premier Division of the Southern League. When our two clubs had met competitively for the first time ever at Beaconsfield on 12th November first half goals from Ben Abbey and Nathan BowdenHasse were sufficient to give our visitors a 2-0 victory leaving them at the top of the table two points clear of Bedworth and eight points ahead of us at that time in eighth place in the table.Following that meeting St Neots embarked on an inspired promotion clinching run of form playing eighteen league
matches, winning 14 drawing 3 and losing 1. However the Cozy meeting sharpened St Neots desire and ambition after Slough completed a league double in a thrilling match winning 1-0 thanks to a strike from Sean Sonner after 35 minutes. St Neots then recovered from this temporary setback putting together seven wins and two draws in their last ten matches to clinch the title and automatic promotion by six clear points with the Slough challenge fading. Now in the Premier Division our visitors have made a fairly solid start winning eight and drawing seven of their first 21 matches and when these notes were completed they sat in twelfth place in the table just five points below the play off zone. Still in a long term ground share with Beaconsfield our visitors are still striving to be able to return ‘home’ to Slough and we wish them

well in their quest. Last month both sides made good starts in their debuts this season in the FA Trophy competition when our lads beat Ilkeston from the Northern Premier League whilst Slough was handed a trip to the seaside to face Margate of the Ryman Premier League where they recorded one of the best results of the round. I mention that because just sixteen years ago Slough was with ninety minutes of a Wembley appearance when they reached the FA Trophy semi-final in the 1997/98 season – a feat both clubs would like to emulate. CLUB HISTORY The club was officially founded in 1890 after the amalgamation of the Swifts, Slough Albion and the Young Mens’ Friendly Society, who between them forged a new club, Slough FC. Slough joined with Erith and Belvedere, Tottenham,

Old St. Stephens, Polytechnic, Windsor and Eton, and Upton Park to play regular league football for the first time two seasons later in the Southern Alliance. Progress in the Southern Alliance, and later the Great Western Suburban League was not spectacular, but in 1921 the club lost out by a narrow margin of votes to Wycombe Wanderers in an effort to obtain membership of the Isthmian League. Disappointed with this decision the club decided to join the Spartan League instead where it remained until the outbreak of World War II. In 1936 the club committee of Slough F.C. made a dreadful mistake that has haunted the club ever since when they made no effort to buy the Dolphin Stadium from the landlord, George Bennett. In November 1947 the title was changed to Slough Town F.C., and following two difficult seasons the club emerged to win
its first championship in its Golden Jubilee year beating runners up Hounslow Town 2-0 in the final match of the season. Under the management of the legendary Bob Gibbs Slough Town narrowly won the championship of Division One in 1964-65. Later the club lifted the Athenian League championship in 1967-68. Slough then won the Athenian title in 1971-72 and 1972-73 They were semi-finalists in the Amateur Cup in 1972 and then finalists in 1973 losing to a very late goal at Wembley scored by Roger Connell who had previously played for several seasons with Slough. In 1991 the club was forced into receivership. The club was immediately purchased by a consortium that was previously connected with Millwall F.C who had been upset at the hands of Slough Town in the F.A. Cup in 1982 with
Gary Attrell scoring the only goal of the game for Slough. The next season, under the management of Dave Kemp, and after chasing Wycombe Wanderers to the championship throughout the season in the final weeks the club fell away a little to finish fifth. At the end of the following season Slough Town was relegated during the final two minutes when Merthyr Tydfil scored a very late winner to overtake them, with a record 47 points, the highest recorded in the Conference for the drop. After several near misses to get to Step Three last season brought the reward for persistence as Slough finished fifth in the Southern League Central Division and won their promotion the hard way with notable play off victories against Rugby Town and Kettering Town – both of them away from home.

WHO’S WHO
THE REBELS
JON UNDERWOOD
WAYNE HARRIS
JAKE SOMERVILLE – Goalkeeper - Jake is a very promising young goalkeeper who joined Slough at the start of the 2013/14 season. Somerville came through the youth ranks at Farnborough, making 13 appearances in the Conference South. Jake is a confident keeper and together with a strong back four creates a defence which is solid and difficult to penetrate. SEAN FRASER – Defender - Sean is a 20 year-old midfielder or full-back who signed for the club in August 2012 and is a former Reading, Coventry City and Falkirk youth academy player. In his first season he made a string of impressive performances, which helped Slough to the First Round of the FA Cup. Previous clubs include Marlow and Southern Premier, Banbury united. ADAM FOULSER – Captain and Defender - Adam joined the Rebels in June 2013 from Godalming Town and was immediately installed as club captain. Adam is an intelligent centre back, good in the air and reads the game well. Unfortunately Adam picked up an injury which means he will miss the start of the season. Adam spent five years with Egham Town, where he was captain. GUY HOLLIS – Defender - Guy is a 22-year-old strong, quick defender. Equally comfortable at right back or centre back, Guy spent several seasons at Ashford Town (Middx.) and then moved up to the Ryman Premier with Carshalton Athletic. Guy’s partnership with Adam at the back has PAGE 26 /

seen numerous clean sheets and with powerful surges from defence Guy is a strong and exciting player to watch. RYAN PARSONS - Defender – The former Windsor defender joined the club in late December 2013, making the move from Southern Premier leaders Hemel Hempstead Town. Ryan proved to be a very important signing for Neil Baker and Jon Underwood, and proceeded to play a huge part in getting the club promoted. He gives the side natural balance at left back, has a great attitude, and bundles of energy which allows him to get up and down the line, but with his first thought being defensive. His previous clubs include Wycombe Wanderers, Windsor and Eton and Maidenhead. TOM MORAN - Defender Tom Moran signed for Slough Town in the summer of 2014, following the club’s promotion to the Southern Premier. REECE YORKE - Defender Reece Yorke signed for Slough Town in the summer of 2014, following the club’s promotion to the Southern Premier. He is still young and wants to keep progressing, he is an ex England schoolboy international, and also signed a professional contract with Barnet. He is a strong, no-nonsense centre half who will fit well into the squad. JAMES DOBSON – Midfield – “Dobbo” joined the Rebels at the back end of season 2013/14 from North Leigh for the club’s promotion-winning run in. He is someone that Neil Baker and Jon

Underwood liked the season before last when we playing for Burnham, and was the subject of a 7 day approach from the management earlier in the season. He is a quick 23-year old who has good work rate and a lovely left foot. He has integrated well into the squad, and the management feel that he is another that after a good pre season can have a real positive effect this coming season. Previous clubs include Oxford United, Oxford City, Witney Town and Burnham. JAKE PARSONS – Midfield - Jake rejoined the club in November 2013 with a view to getting himself fit after having a knee operation last summer. He immediately integrated into the squad and proved his ability. Jake was always playing catch up with his fitness last year, and having the belief in his knee, however Baker and Underwood feel with a good pre-season under his belt he can have a really good season for the club. He can operate on either wing, and also down the middle. His previous clubs include Windsor and Eton and Windsor FC. WARREN HARRIS – Midfield - Warren is a 21 year old right winger who was signed as a loan player for Godalming by Neil Baker and Jon Underwood from Conference South, Staines Town. Warren is the younger brother of fellow Rebel Scott, and is a great talent. He is hard-working, quick and has a real eye for goal, having scored 23 in season 2012/13, including 21 league goals. Warren has also represented Ashford Town.
Johnnie Dyer (Forward) Johnnie joined the Rebels in June 2013 and is a former England schoolboy international. Johnnie is a real handful for defenders, and despite not being the tallest, he is excellent in the air, with a superb work rate and attitude. He has previously played for various clubs and made his first team debut in the Conference South aged just 16. This season started late for Johnnie due to an injury however recently he has been on fire and is definitely becoming one of the fans favourites!
GUY HOLLIS
JAKE SOMERVILLE
JAMIE MCCLURG – Midfield - Jamie joined the Rebels at the start of the season and is a midfielder with a great engine. He is a firm favourite amongst everyone he plays with. His work-rate is exceptional, and he is able to pop up with vital goals. He previously played under Jon Underwood at Bracknell Town, and has also represented Basingstoke Town and Uxbridge. GEORGE SHORT – Midfield - George was released by Southampton as a 16 year old but is now blossoming and has a very bright future ahead of him. Now making regular appearances in the first team George is becoming an accomplished midfielder and wins his fair share of headers. With a good eye for a pass George has a great future ahead of him. SEBASTIEN CASTELLO – Midfield Sebastien is a midfield player, and is currently part of the Under 18s side managed by Mark Betts. Jon and Neil have a high regard for Sebastien and he is now becoming more and more involved in the first team. Appearances in Cup games have shown that Sebastien is confident and comfortable on the ball at this level. Jon and Neil together with Mark see Sebastien as very much part of the future of Slough Town. LUKE KNIGHT – Midfield – ‘Knighty’ is a new addition to the Rebels for the 2014/2015 season having joined the club from Barton Rovers. Luke came to the attention of the management
JOHNNIE DYER
when he was in the Biggleswade Town side which was promoted the season before last, but he really excelled last season and impressed Neil Baker and Jon Underwood every time they saw him. He has a great work rate, which is something Baker and Underwood look for in midfield, and does not to take any prisoners. He can also pop up with goals from midfield. Previous clubs include Biggleswade Town and Kettering Town. EDWARD SMITH – Striker - Striker Edward Smith joined the club in August 2012 on a dual-registration basis from Metropolitan Police. Ed wasted little time in making an impact, striking up an excellent goal scoring partnership with Danny Burnell as the Rebels made it through to the First Round of the FA Cup. He scored 33 goals in all competitions in his first season with the club, and won the club’s Golden Boot award. His previous clubs include Chertsey Town and Fleet Town. Edward has had a fantastic start to the season and is currently high up the league’s leading goal scorers table. SCOTT HARRIS – Striker - Scott Harris known as the ’Hatchet’ has previously played for Ashford Town (Middx) in the Premier division, where he spent a number of seasons. He is a strong hardworking centre forward with an excellent goal scoring record at this level. He is an incredibly strong forward, who works himself into the ground for the team; always on the move he certainly keeps
ADAM FOULSER
the opposition defenders on their toes! ADAM CORNELL – Striker - Adam joined the Rebels in January 2014 from Binfield, of the Hellenic Premier Division. He is another who has meshed with the existing squad superbly. Whilst he might not have played as much as he would have wanted with the form of Johnnie Dyer and Eddie Smith at the end of the last season, however he stepped up to the plate in the Play-Off Final with an excellent display. Adam’s previous clubs include Binfield, Badshot Lea, Camberley Town, Hayes & Yeading, Uxbridge and Bracknell Town. DARRYL THOMAS- Striker - Darryl Thomas, a 28 year old forward, signed for the Rebels in August 2014 from Northern Premier League side Matlock Town. He has moved to the London area from Nottingham, and was recommended to joint managers Neil Baker and Jon Underwood via James Jepson, the ex-Kettering midfielder. He arrived at Holloways Park having previously played for Ilkeston Town where he won promotion via the play offs to the Northern Premier League, scoring two goals in the semi-final and a goal in the final. He is a quick centre forward and gives Slough another attacking option. Darryl scored his first goal for the club in a 2-1 win against Banbury United.

DREW ROBERTS - HATTRICK HERO!
GREENIES GREETINGS
UNBELIEVABLE, RIDICULOUS, CRAZY, UNREAL, MAD. Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to Rowley Park – The Cozy Stadium, for tonight’s Evostik League Southern Premier Division match. Unbelievable, Ridiculous, Crazy, Unreal, Mad. Just some of the descriptions used to sum up Saturday’s home win over Dorchester Town. Games like these happen every now and again at this level and this must have been the week for strange results with Hitchin smashing seven past Biggleswade at the Carlsberg Stadium on Tuesday evening and then go and back this one up with a home win over league leaders Poole Town on Saturday in front of just over 1600 fans (many of whom, it must be added had attended in protest at the potential redevelopment of Top Field). Two other sides plundered six goals on Saturday with Truro smashing Hereford without reply and Paulton Rovers beating managerless Arlesey Town, this time with the visitors notching twice in reply. Obviously Drew was to take the headlines with a well taken treble but at the same
time, it was great to see Chris Dillon open his competitive account with a brilliantly placed looping header and of course, Ben Mackey scoring his first goal for the Club since his recent return and what a strike it was too, almost ripping the net from the woodwork as the ball nestled inside it to dramatically claim all the points in the closing minutes to break the hearts of the visiting players and supporters and yes, we were treated to the customary flip too. Big Ben is back and with the impending return of Nathan Frater from injury and Matty Nolan too, we really have some striking options available to choose from with each player adding something a little different to the armoury. I will just mirror what everyone else has said too about the performance of David Hutton, who had an exception game on his debut, giving us genuine width, balance to the team and trickery on the left,

something we had been lacking recently. David, welcome to the Club and more performances like that, you’ll soon endear yourself to the home support. Tonight could also see the return to Rowley Park of two ex Saints players with their current club, Slough Town, as fans’ favourite Adrian Sear and midfield partner Luke Knight could both feature for the visitors. Please give the two lads a good reception as they both served this club very well in their time with us and will no doubt be looking to prove a point or two. Ok then, on to the action. Get behind the boys as you normally do and hopefully we will be in for an entertaining game with us coming out on top. One Club, One Team, One Goal.... GREENY

BRIAN CLOUGH Some great stories about the people who knew and worked under the great man Stop The Bus Forests Gary Birtles Thanks to the gaffer I must be the only person who set of on a journey to Kuwait and only managed to get a mile down the road. To be fair I was moaning and cursing when the team bus suddenly came to a halt and Cloughie decided it would be best for all concerned if I got off. It was bizarre and that was only the half of it because he then flagged down a complete stranger in a car and asked if he would be kind enough to take me back to the ground, you’ve guessed… the guy did, It could only happen to Cloughie but nothing he did ever really surprise me. What happened was the club had arranged an exhibition match in Kuwait. No one hated the travelling more than the gaffer but cash was so tight, forest had some blank weekends in the season and decided on playing lucrative friendly games. I could not have played anyway because I was injured none of the players were happy about going but I envisaged being well out of it and in the pub for a nice couple of pints come Sunday lunchtime. To my horror I was told to report to the ground at 9am anyway injured or not I was fuming. I got on the coach and the gaffer was late as usual I was grumbling away at the back of the bus and the gaffer clocked it. Like I said we probably only gone a mile or so when the gaffer strides up to the back of the bus and says,
All Bets Off By Derby legend Colin Todd
“right Gaz” out with it what is wrong. Well your taking me halfway around the world for match I can’t play in and I honestly think I would have been better staying here I replied. “Son you’re right” Arthur stop the bus he bellowed down to our trusty driver at the front. The gaffer jumped out and virtually got in the road and flagged down a car, it was a Sunday morning so the poor fella was probably going to church or something. “Excuse me would you be so kind and take one of my footballers back to the ground” asked Cloughie, this bloke seemed transfixed, motioned me to get in the car. To cut a long story short, I was in the pub by 12 congratulating myself and thinking of the lads still probably not quite at Heathrow that was a result for a start off but what really made it a double whammy was the fact the lads never got to Kuwait anyway. The Gaffer was a dreadful flyer at the best of times but when they aborted the first take off he ordered the stewardess to let the forest party off.She said he couldn’t because they were on the runway but Cloughie being Cloughie got himself and the lads off the plane anyway.
PAGE 38 / ST NEOTS TOWN F.C. V SLOUGH TOWN ISSUE 16
I received a phone call at home one afternoon asking me to report to the gaffer’s office and to bring my wife jenny with me. What on earth could it be? As we made our way there we couldn’t help but try to work out what could have prompted such a request. Perhaps i’d won an award and they wanted to tell me first rather than hear it second hand. “Come in” the Gaffer and Peter Taylor summoned us in and the mystery began to unravel in quite dramatic fashion. Well, it was pretty dramatic for me, I can assure you of that.
‘Have you any idea why you are here? I was asked: No Boss; You sure? Yes Boss You can’t think of any reason why I should have you in here then. Not really. Have I won the player of the year award? ‘Player of the year award? Clough said in a perplexed tone.
Player of the year award? He repeated looking even more bemused.
I GOT ON THE COACH AND THE GAFFER WAS LATE AS USUAL I WAS GRUMBLING AWAY AT THE BACK OF THE BUS AND THE GAFFER CLOCKED IT... “No, it’s not that. You have a problem don’t you? He said looking me full in the eye.
No, I don’t think so I assured him.
Over the road, he said pointing in the general direction of the bookmakers just across the way. It’s come to our notice that you owe the bookies some money and you are in a bit of trouble, the Boss continued. Bit of trouble? Master of the understatement, I looked at my wife and realized that if I wasn’t before I certainly would be now.
Well? Yes I muttered absolutely petrified. Right, well if we hear of anything like this and you will be kicked out of this club, I was told. This was Clough and Taylor at their very best. Their method was that if they had just collared me privately it wouldn’t have meant anything. I could have sloped off and got it sorted without any recriminations. As it was I got another bollocking the minute i’d walked out of the office door? It did the trick. I owe them for that, even though I probably couldn’t have appreciated it at that moment.
The funny thing was that the debt was mysteriously cleared. From that day on I was scared to even look at the racing pages in the papers for fear of them catching me.
INTRODUCING
EDD ADJEI Edd is no stranger to Saints fans, performing consistently at either left wing, left back or even striker. Having opted to leave the Club prior to the start of the 2014/15 due to family reasons, Ed has now returned and after a return to fitness following a loan spell out he has regained his place in the side filling in at left back. A great crosser of the ball Edds devastating runs down the flank is something to be enjoyed.

OPPORTUNITIES AND SOME... “Yep 8 goals” “Thought you said you left at half time?” “I did” “What was the final score?” “We won 6-5, they won the toss and batted first and both side agreed to play flo goalies” “Flo Goalie?” “Yes it’s when you don’t play a goalie but any one of your players can handle the ball if they happen to be standing between the goal posts when the opposition shoot”
The lads are off to Stevenage on Thursday evening to take a game in that includes one or two potential loan players. Stevenage have been fantastically proactive at getting our partnership moving forward which is very encouraging. It’s not a short term thing for either club so it will take a while to bed down and explore all possible avenues that are open to us. Next season’s scholarship recruitment is already underway, an open trial was held at the club in the October half term with great success and as a follow up we have invited possible scholars to our home match on the 20th December against Frome. This will present a further opportunity for
us to have a good look at the lads but also give them and their parents the chance to ask any further questions they may have about what it is we do, how we go about what we do and what we have planned for the future. We are constantly looking to move the programme forwards, whether this be by what we can offer in the way of additional life skills or by talking to our educational partners about new initiatives that will enhance what is delivered and how it’s delivered. Watch out for further exciting news in the near future. Today’s game against Slough is going to be a tough and competitive game so let’s hope it all comes together and we get the result we are all looking for. LEE
“Really, is that allowed?” “Yep, and we agreed not to play any off side as well” “Off side what?” Oh the conversations I have with my wife

Nearly Half Time! 22 out of 46 League Matches down the line then and what of our season so far? Currently lying in fourth position in the league table, overall things are looking pretty good. A terrific start to the season has meant that the team has been able to hold on to the pace setters at the top of league. This is in spite of a bit of a “Mid Season Wobble” which we have hopefully put behind us now. In my view our form recently has been at best “Indifferent” with flashes of brilliant attacking play, overshadowed at times by individual mistakes. It feels this season more than ever, that these mistakes, both unfortunate but part of the game, have been extremely costly. Defensive frailties have come to fore, although leading up to the last home match, a barren spell in front of goal has halted our progression, further up the table. Notable performers within the squad for me have been Drew Roberts, R Frater and the evergreen Paul Bastock, who since his arrival, has in my mind been so far, our best signing this season. Other points worth mentioning are that Hilliard missed the first 6 games of season and probably took another four to get the crucial match sharpness back. Chris Dillon, so often last season the provider for Drew, when
they were both at Chesham last season, is really only now finding his feet, being out for most of the first half of the season. But again probably the biggest miss for me has been Bruce Wilson, certainly the results when he has been in the side are mainly positive ones. The best bits so far, include a decent run in the FA Trophy and good results against two strong teams from the North of the country. A great home win against high fliers Poole Town FC, who until that game hadn’t lost a single game. Another good home win against another pre season hopeful and a bit of a sleeping giant of club Weymouth Town FC and also a superb away win against Hitchin Town FC, on a wet and miserable Monday night away from home, put a smile on all Saints Fans faces that attended. Lowlights for me where getting dumped out of the FA Cup in a replay Dereham Town FC, getting dumped out of the FA Trophy in a replay at AFC Sudbury. Home defeats and poor performances against Chesham Town FC and Cambridge also hurt a little. So what of the second half of the season? What does it hold for us?
PAGE 46 / ST NEOTS TOWN F.C. V SLOUGH TOWN ISSUE 16
The answer is that we will probably only get out of it what we deserve too! The latest additions to the injury hit squad look to be positive ones, on a personal note, it’s great to see Ben Mackey back in a St Neots shirt. His touch and tenacity on the ball gives us a dimension sorely missing from an otherwise lively attack. Today’s visitors Slough Town will hopefully name Adrian Sears in their squad, his Captain Courageous style performances when at St Neots, warmed him to all fans. Latterly in his time with us injuries stopped our new management team from seeing his true potential, in fact what I think we could ideally do with, to stiffen our sometimes vulnerable defence, is a fully fit and mobile Adrian Sears type of player marauding in front of them! Apart from that it’s about 8/10 on the School Report spectrum, or a solid “B” from me. That’s about my view on our season so far, I’m really looking forward to seeing whether or not we can realise the Chairmans pre season target of a playoff place this season? We have the Players, do they have the Minerals for it? Yours Aye Craig
“IT’S GREAT TO SEE BEN MACKEY BACK IN A ST NEOTS SHIRT. HIS TOUCH AND TENACITY ON THE BALL GIVES US A DIMENSION SORELY MISSING FROM AN OTHERWISE LIVELY ATTACK.”

Division One South & West Merthyr Town scored minutes before the break and doubled their lead five minutes into the second half to set up a 2-1 win at Tiverton Town and move to the top of the table replacing Stratford Town who, having taken a sixth minute lead, conceded twice before the break before securing a 2-2 home draw with Bridgwater Town while Didcot Town stayed in touch with the leading pair when a goal thirteen minutes after the interval gave them a 1-0 home win over Wantage Town and Larkhall Town scored three times in the opening fifteen minutes of the second half to win 3-0 at home against second from bottom Bashley.Taunton Town dropped a place to fifth in the table when they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Cinderford Town while Yate Town, who had taken the lead on the stroke of half time, secured a 2-1 win at Clevedon Town with a winner four minutes after conceding an own goal around the hour mark but Shortwood United, a goal up at the interval, conceded a penalty eighteen minutes from time to draw 1-1 at Fleet Town. A goal after just four minutes was sufficient to secure a 1-0 home win for Wimborne Town against Mangotsfield United while Evesham United also won 1-0 at home when they Sholing conceded a penalty four minutes from time and a third minute strike gave Swindon Supermarine a 1-0 success over visiting North Leigh but bottom of the table Bishops Cleeve, a goal behind on the stroke of half time and two down midway through the second half, were left still looking for their first win when they went down 2-1 at home to AFC Totton.

MANCHESTER UNITED may finally be getting back to top form under Louis Van Gaal, but there’s one former Red Devil who has been on an upward curve for a while – Worcester City’s Sean Geddes. It’s true that the national media don’t give Non-League the coverage it deserves – that’s why we’re here, of course! But Geddes has forced his way into the headlines. He scored twice last month at the Ricoh Arena to shock 1987 FA Cup winners Coventry City. The fact that his work involved him making parts used by the Mercedes Formula 1 team – whose drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg were fighting for the World Championship – was a fantastic narrative. City may have returned to the rigours of the Vanarama Conference North, but Geddes, the former Manchester United trainee who played alongside Danny Welbeck, made it nationwide again after Saturday’s 3-0 defeat of Barrow in the FA Trophy. The midfielder took a lofted pass out of the air with his right foot before turning back onto his left just inside the penalty area. With Barrow defenders thinking they had done their job by halting his progress, Geddes wrapped his right foot around the back of his left leg to chip the keeper Aaran Taylor with a ‘Rabona’. That sort of goal is normally reserved for the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Tottenham’s Erik Lamela - who recently scored one of his own in Spurs’ Europa League match
PAGE 54 /
against Astera Tripoli. But Geddes showed his pedigree and reminded the likes of United superstars Falcao, Angel Di Maria and Robin van Persie how it’s done! A short clip of the goal on video sharing site Vine had already been viewed 1.3million times by Tuesday morning. It’s just a shame Geddes’ second goal against Barrow, a wonderful 25-yard free kick, has all but been forgotten! The ‘Rabona’ prompted his club boss Car Heeley to say: “Sean’s first goal was probably the best goal I’ve ever seen. To try that sort of effort, you need to be full of belief and it just shows his confidence.” Of course, Geddes isn’t the first Non-League star to go ‘viral’ on the internet after a piece of sheer brilliance. The Goal of the Season winner at our National Game Awards in May went to Welling United’s Joe Healy for his fantastic scissor kick at Grimsby Town. The goal attracted over 100,000 views on YouTube and was a worthy winner. Rene Steer, meanwhile, scored a
ST NEOTS TOWN F.C. V SLOUGH TOWN ISSUE 16
wonder goal for St Neots from 40 yards against Canvey Island that attracted over half a million views. And then there was the “greatest Non-League goal of all time” by former Premier League star Glen Little – or at least that’s how it was billed! Veteran Little, then playing for Wealdstone, picked the ball up in his own half before surging up the pitch and eventually chipping the Dulwich Hamlet keeper from the edge of the box. That attracted over 270,000 views. And of course there’s always space for a video nasty. Ebbsfleet United keeper Preston Edwards might not thank me for bringing this up, but his sending off after ten seconds against Farnborough has been watched almost ten million times! If the amount of attention these videos have attracted only tells you one thing, it’s that Non-League’s definitely got talent!
