Greenie’s Greeting Mike Green Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the Premier Plus Stadium – home of the Saints and the Mick George Academy, for today’s Buildbase FA Trophy Second Qualifying Round tie. Today we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Barwell FC and we hope your brief visit here to St Neots is a pleasant one.
A break from League action today as we look to progress into the third qualifying round of the FA Trophy and we face a Barwell side who made it through to today’s game after beating Coalville in a replay, this after they found themselves 2-0 to their local rivals and not for the first time this season, the Ravens managed to relinquish a firm lead and exit another cup competition. Two league games played since our win over Matlock in the last round and two draws earned. Firstly, we travelled to Coalville Town (for the second time in a month) and came away with a credible 1-1 draw in what turned out to be a feisty affair and of course, we went down to 10 men in the second half after Johnny Herd’s rather harsh two yellows (hence his absence from today’s match). Our second match saw us entertain Tamworth in a rearranged game on Tuesday evening and the first time ex manager Dennis Greene has returned to the Club since his resignation many moons ago. No goals for either team on the night but another clean sheet gained and an entertaining game none the less with honours shared. Ok then, back to today’s match and please do get behind the boys, you, the 12 th man is so important to the boys out on the pitch and the noise you generate can and has squeezed out that extra bit of effort in games which can prove so vital. Don’t forget we have HAPPY HOUR between 5–7pm with discounts on Bud Lite, Fosters and IPA and a live football on the BIG SCREEN to keep you all entertained. If you’re reading this prior to the game, remember, Bring a mate, double the gate, it’s that easy.

Greeny
From the Dugout… With
A warm welcome to our visitors today from Barwell and a big thank you to all today’s home support. Well after two draws on the spin in the league we focus back today on the cup and we are looking almost fully fit once again to give us the firepower we need to just improve in front of goal to look to start another cup adventure. With Gary Wharton returning it leaves only Harry O’Malley to return and I believe, as a squad, we are just simmering... and only a few fine margins away from operating at the full throttle I believe and know this side is capable of. On this day away from football, I’d like to show my respect to those that gave their lives and wear my poppy with pride as a sign of respect. “We shall not forget” Get behind us and back us as you have done so superbly all season and thank you again from myself, my staff and all the lads

BARWELL FC Joined League: 1933 Chairman: David Laing Website: www.pitchero.com/clubs/barwell A special welcome this afternoon for the Manager, players, officials and supporters of BARWELL who make only their second visit to the Town – the previous one being six years ago this month. Today we stage a Second Round Qualifying FA Trophy match with both teams having won their way to this stage a fortnight ago - Barwell with a dramatic extra time comeback victory over Coalville (where did we hear that recently??). When we were promoted to the Premier Division of the Southern League in 2012, we joined Barwell in that Division. They had finished ninth the previous season – their first season in that Division and when they visited St Neots, they were fifth with matches in hand of all the clubs ahead of them. The result was a 2-2 draw (report elsewhere in programme) with our lads taking a first half lead before conceding two goals and having to come back from behind to grab a point. The return match was memorable – a 3-2 victory for us after leading 3-0 at one stage – with the result confirming our survival at Step Three and robbing Barwell of the chance of a play-off place. The Canaries have an excellent record away from home this season last defeated on foreign soil almost three months ago at Coalville on 27th August. Since then their three league defeats were all at home and they unbeaten in all competitions since 6th October when they lost at home in the league to Alvechurch. Both of our teams were defeated in the
Second Qualifying Round of the FA Trophy last season – our lads at home to Stourbridge and Barwell at home by lower graded Mildenhall Town. For today’s winners the next round is scheduled for two weeks’ time – 24th November with the draw to be published on Monday. On the original fixture list we were due to travel to Barwell that date for a league fixture but with one of our clubs in Trophy action that is a match that will require a midweek rearrangement!
CLUB HISTORY The Club played for the first time in the Midland Combination under the name of Barwell FC in the 1992/3 season when Barwell Athletic from the Leicestershire Senior League joined forces with Hinckley FC. Barwell became one of the founder members of the Midland Football Alliance League on its formation in 1994/95. The Sports complex with its bowling, cricket, football facilities and sports club is situated just out of the centre of the village making it an ideal venue for local residents. The facilities of the complex include a cricket pitch which was used for two Leicestershire first eleven county championship matches just after the Second World War, is a current venue for some Leicestershire second eleven and youth team matches. There is an outdoor bowling green and a magnificent indoor bowls centre complete with bar and restaurant serving a wide range
of drinks and meals at prices to suit all pockets. Floodlights were installed prior to the 1992/93 season and have been updated to comply with current FA lighting regulations. A covered stand was built prior to 1996/7 season and during the 1997/8 close season the ground was enclosed, an important step in our quest for higher status. Towards the end of 2000/01 season a new 250 seat cantilever stand was erected at Kirkby Road, and officially opened by goalkeeper Chris Kirkland on 31st July 2001 - a Barwell lad. Barwell reached the last sixteen of the FA Vase in 1995/6 their highest finish in the completion losing 3-1 away at Flixton. Other honors include the Leicestershire Senior Cup in 1996/7, the Presidents Trophy in August 1997. They have also reached the final of the Westerby Cup (played at Filbert Street and latterly the Walkers Stadium) on 3 occasions 1999/2000, 2000/01 and 2004/5 unfortunately losing all three finals to Leicester City, Hinckley Utd and Oadby Town respectively. Barwell also reached the League Cup Final losing after extra time to Rushall Olympic. A new Manager, Bob Steel, took over the reins at Barwell in February 2004 and brought in Steve Greenhill and Ian Blyth as Assistant Managers ( with Ian also being coach). He steadied the side and instilled his way of playing into the players and is
gradually getting the squad he wants. 2005/6 finally put some silverware on the shelf when Barwell won the Polymac services league cup final at Walsall’s Bescot Stadium, beating Leamington 3-1. 2006/7 saw Barwell finish in a disappointing 6th position and come runners up in both the Westerby Cup and the Rolleston Charity Cup. It was also the first season for Barwell’s Youth team who played in the Leicestershire Midweek Floodlit Youth League finishing a creditable 6th in the League and to round things off the reserves also finished 6th with a great run of results to finish the season. 2007/08 was a somewhat mixed season for the Club. The first team saw two change of Manager, Bob Steel stood down in November to take on the running of the Sports Bar on the complex and his Assistant Ian Blyth took over as manager, after a run of indifferent results and the team slipping toward the bottom three the Club decided to appoint a new Manager in Marcus Law. Marcus took over the reigns in February and with a run of good result lifted the Club to a respectable mid-table finish. The Reserves had a great season, despite losing a lot of players to the first team, finishing 3rd with the Youth team finishing runners up. 2008/09 was Marcus’s first full season at the Club and he has brought in Paul O’Brien as his Assistant with Coach Lee Knibbs and Gk Coach Pat Pattinson and Physio Alan Cooke. This was The Clubs best season to date, they finished runners up in the League on 91 points and also won the Westerby Cup beating Quorn 2-0 at the Walkers Stadium. Barwell have started the new
season on a high by lifting the Joe McGorrian trophy at Market Drayton by beating the home team 4-0. 2009/10 proved to be our most successful season to date. The season started well with the lads winning the Joe McGorian Cup at 2008/09 league winners Market Drayton. After 16 season in the MFA we finally won the league and promotion to The Evo-Stik Northern Premier League. The League was won in style with the team playing 42 games winning 36 and drawing 6 with no losses and amassing a League record 114 points. They also scored 125 goals and conceded only 18. The season was also a successful one in the FA Vase where we reached the semi final losing in the last minute of the second leg to the eventual Vase winners Whitley Bay. 2010/11..again proved to be a very successful season. The season started where the last one had finished on a winning streak. In September the Manager Marcus Law left, with our best wishes, for a full time post at Kettering Town. Assistant Manager Paul O’Brien took over with Jimmy Ginnelly taking the post of Assistant Manager, unfortunately Paul had to step down due to work commitments and so he and Jimmy swapped places for our 3rd change in two months. As always with a new Manager there are comings and goings but Jimmy managed to retain most of the Squad and won the Evo Stik Division 1 South at the first attempt. 2011/12..During the closed season Barwell were put into the Evo Stik League Southern Premier Division and so for the first time were competing at level 3 . Paul O’Brien left the Club during
the close season to take up a coaching position with Ex. Manager Marcus Law now at Tamworth, Martin Hier stepped up to Assistant Manager and Craig Woodley joined the Club as Coach, Rob Lawrance also came on board as GK Coach. Craig Woodley left for a job in America and Steve Anastasi came on board as coach. The team finished a creditable 9th in their first season and now look forward to improving on this in the forthcoming season. 2012/13..The Club sat in the top 5 of the League for the major part of the season but form dipped in the last couple of months and they lost out on a play off place with a draw on the last day of the season leaving Barwell in 8th position. Two or three experienced players joined at the start of the season and with a mixture of youth and experience improved on last season. 2013/14..Barwell were moved from the Southern League back to the Northern Premier League. A very difficult season lay ahead, after settling in the Southern League they now had to get used to the ways of the North. They had a reasonable start but dipped badly during the Middle part of the season and were down in the relegation battle but they turned it round and finished in a creditable 14th position. 2014/15..In their second season back in the Northern Premier League Barwell did not make the start they hoped for and after a few weeks found themselves bottom of a very strong League. A couple of players then returned from injury/suspension and they began to put results together and at the end of the season finished a creditable 7th=. They also had a good FA Cup & Trophy run and topped
the season off when they won the Westerby Challenge Trophy at the King Power stadium beating neighbours Coalville Town 2-1 with goals from Nigel Julian & Jamie Hood. 2015/16..Finished a creditable 9th in the League after a great run in January/February where they had 12 straight wins. They also recorded their best FA Cup run when they got to the 1st round proper losing to National League South team Welling United 2-0. Craig Woodley joined the coaching staff as fitness coach. 2016/17..A poor start to the League saw Barwell finish 14th at the end of the season. Poor FA Cup and Trophy results saw quite a disappointing season. The highlight was winning the Leicestershire Challenge Cup at The King Power Stadium beating our neighbours Coalville Town. 2017/18 Once again poor FA cup/Trophy were very disappointing, but a 9th place league position was a creditable finish. Next season sees Barwell feature in the new Southern Central Premier division with new ground to visit and less travelling over the season.
PLAYER PROFILES Liam Castle Castle is entering his 13th season with the club and has virtually been an ever-present at Kirkby Road under Jimmy Ginnelly, barring a few games that he has missed through injury. The goalkeeper has achieved plenty of league and cup success with the Canaries and will be hoping to replicate that this season. JEAN-RUBEN DESROSIERS Joined from carlton Town experienced centre back,
also had spells at Coalville & Loughborough Elliot Percival The former Leicester City and Sheffield Wednesday defender signed for Barwell last summer and has not looked back. Percival is now one of the key players in Jimmy Ginnelly’s side and can play all across the back four as he looks to help push the team into the play-offs and maybe beyond. His fantastic attitude both on and off the pitch will set him up for a long and successful career in the game. Jai Rowe Signed from Nuneaton Borough this summer, Jai is an exciting full back and is the youngest member of our squad this season. The youngster impressed during our pre-season friendlies over the summer and the management team did not hesitate over their decision to get him signed as quickly as possible. Brad-Lee Gascoigne Gascoigne is an experienced defender, having played for several clubs, including neighbours Nuneaton Borough. The central defender is based in Mansfield but revealed over the summer that he already feels ‘the most settled he has ever been at a club’ so does not mind the travel. The central defender adopts a ‘nononsense’ attitude but is also a skilled technical footballer who likes to play out when he can. Liam Kay Liam Kay is an experienced defender at our level and stands out whenever he is in the side. However, due to work commitments, he is often unavailable on a Saturday afternoon. Despite this, he is still a fantastic option for Jimmy Ginnelly to have, should he
be available. Guy Hadland Assistant manager Guy Hadland has signed player registration forms for the season ahead, in case of an injury crisis in the centre back area of the pitch. The former Nuneaton Town defender has served as Jimmy’s assistant for several years and his knowledge and passion for football provides a huge boost to the squad. Liam Cross Liam is a young centre half that we have signed from Bedworth United Under-21s this summer. The youngster is a calm and composed defender who could thrive under Jimmy Ginnelly this season, as he looks to get his first taste of senior football and develop as a footballer with the Canaries. Eddy Nisevic As trustworthy as non-league left backs come, Eddy has been at Barwell for several years and is committed to the club. He is a solid 1-v-1 defender and can also create dangerous opportunities when he travels forward down the left wing. Nigel Julien Club captain Nigel celebrated his testimonial over the summer and has committed to the club once again. The tenacious central midfielder isn’t afraid to get stuck in and recover the ball. He can also create attacks from deep for the Barwell side. Brady Hickey Brady will be the team captain this season, meaning he will wear the armband on the pitch. The attacking midfielder re-joined us last season after a brief spell at Nuneaton Town and will look to rediscover the form he displayed before he left the club previously.
Blair Anderson
ALEX TOMKINSON
DOMINIC BROWN-HILL
Well known to Barwell fans for his previous spell at the club, Blair has returned to the club this summer after time at Coalville Town. The winger has pace to burn and is an exciting addition to the squad for the coming season.
Alex has rejoined Barwell after a spell at Worcester City, speedy midfield player
Young central defender has played youth football at Leicester City, Rangers and more recently Notts County where he was loaned out to Shaw Lane.
Ben Ashby Ashby is a versatile midfielder who can play on either wing, as well as centrally if needed. He has recently spent time at Rugby Town but has now made the step up to the Evo-Stik Southern League Central Division to show what he can do. Tom Bates ‘Batesy’ is a very popular figure in the dressing room and has take a step back from playing to focus on his new coaching role with the club. However, he is still registered as a player and will be called upon throughout the season, if needed. Owen Story 33-year-old Story is another player who has re-signed for the club after helping us to a ninth-place finish last term. He is another versatile midfielder who can play on either wing, as well as centrally or at left back. The former Brackley man brings a lot of experience to a relatively young attacking midfield department.
Jake Warmington Former Aston Villa youngster ‘Warmy’ joined us last season and made a number of appearances towards the end of the campaign, including 90 minutes away at Shaw Lane. The youngster scored in that game and also bagged two in our pre-season trip to Quorn this summer. The talented wide midfielder will be hoping for more of the same this season. Massiah McDonald Having spent last season at Coalville Town and Stafford Rangers, McDonald joined Barwell this summer in the hope that he will enjoy his football again at Kirkby Road. In a pre-season interview with the club’s website, the Montserrat international has set himself a target of 15 goals for the 201819 season. Kian Williams 18 year old forward currently in the 3rd year of his scholarship with Leicester City. Kian has joined Barwell to get a taste of senior football after a serious injury.
ELLIOTT TAYLOR Young keeper who was on Nuneaton Towns books last season. SYLVAN EBANKS-BLAKE Experienced striker signed form Halesowen Town. Sylvan previously played for Plymouth, Chesterfield and Wolverhampton Wanderers for whom he made 177 appearances. LIAM CANAVAN Forward, signed from Leicestershire team Anstey Nomads, previous Clubs include Kettering Town QUENTIN ALBERTUS Midfield. Joined Barwell from Excelsior Maassluis in the Netherlands. Has also played for Sparta Rotterdam JAHVAN DAVIDSON-MILLER Forward signed from Kettering Town, previous Clubs include Belper Town, Cardiff City U23’s & Derby County.
October was a month which saw the managerial merry-go-round in full flow with destinations taking a different turn from what you might have expected. Martin Gray found himself back in football at Ebac Northern League Division One side Shildon after his departure at York City earlier this season. Heads were turned by the 47-year-old’s decision to make the drop three levels lower than his former employers. As much as football can be about turning on a swivel to beat a defender and endless stamina, the power of persuasion can be the basis for new beginnings. If a chairman’s persuasive talents can wrap its arms around a manager or coach’s ‘gut feeling’, as was the case with Gray, then who are we to argue against it? Here are three other instances of the past and present where managers have made moves few could have predicted. Kevin Nicholson – Mousehole From the National League with Torquay United last season, to the new surroundings of South West Peninsula League outfit Mousehole AFC. A drop from Step 1 to Step 7, but the Seagulls are a club who have no intentions of ‘standing still’ according to head of football operations Adam Fletcher. UEFA ‘A’ Licence-holder Nicholson has proved quite the catch for the fishing port town based in west Cornwall, steering the team to a 11-1 league victory over Ludgvan last week. Switching the Gulls for the Seagulls, Nicholson said he was “taken aback by the club’s footballing philosophy, coaching set-up, use of technology, committee support, infrastructure, fantastic Academy and forward-thinking ambition.” Other moves which flew under the radar and hit national headlines Tony Adams - FK Gabala This was no high and dry decision by the Arsenal great who followed his sacking as Portsmouth manager with a move to the former Soviet Republic of Azerbaijan and top flight side FK Gabala. His arrival at the one-time champions of Azerbaijan was heralded as a landmark moment to boost the Azerbaijan Premier League’s reputation, but results didn’t come consistently as Gabala were left to bide their time with midtable finishes. After leaving the club, Adams then returned in 2014 as sporting director and his recruitment saw the team post the their biggest points total in eight years when they finished third. For the next two seasons, Gabala couldn’t crack the glass ceiling and would saddle consecutive third-place finishes with cup runs which fell at the final hurdle. Adams most recently was appointed as manager of La Liga side Granada with the objective of staving off relegation. But the damage had already been done as Adams’ defensive nous wasn’t enough to overturn a minus-45 goal difference. Sven Goran Eriksson – Notts County A year after managing Manchester City backed by the mega wealth of Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed, the former England boss was lured to League Two Notts County as sporting director. In one of British football’s most extreme cases of shady ownership, the takeover would become part of a wider investigation into the legitimacy of businessman Russell King for the Serious Fraud Office. Proclaiming to have bought the rights to North Korea’s gold, coal and iron ore mining operations, King was the head of a company worth $2trillion. All the money in the world to help Sven take the Magpies from League Two to the Premier League. And the Swede was totally sold on the idea he could do just that, reportedly travelling to Pyongyang to visit North Korean dignitaries. But all was not as it seemed and once ‘conman’ King was embroiled in the investigation for fraud, the club ran up debts of £7million before being sold for £1 to local businessman Ray Tew. Eriksson’s seven months at the club were at an end and the Swede later admitted the vanishing act had left him stewing in ‘anger’.
SOUTHERN LEAGUE CENTRAL PREMIER DIVISION
St Neots Town St Neots Manager Matt Clements saw this result as two points lost rather than one gained after his side had finished strongly in a closely fought match with league newcomers Tamworth. It was the return to the Premier Plus Stadium of visitors’ Manager Dennis Greene who oversaw St Neots progress from Step Five to Step Three in successive seasons, as well as a late cameo substitute appearance for former charismatic goalscoring hero Stefan Moore. Sadly the result only served to underline St Neots lack of league goalscoring power for they have now only managed to score nine times in thirteen league outings despite having found the back of the net fifteen times in eight cup matches. The match also featured the return to the defence of Taylor Parr after missing the last two matches with injury and there was a one hundredth senior appearance for utility player Tom Wood moved into midfield for this match to accommodate Parr, with Matt Miles left on the substitutes bench. Tamworth relegated to this level from the National League at the end of last season cherish ambitions of a return to Step Two this season but on this showing, they are some way short of achieving that aim. Although first half play was end to end neither side had the finishing to seriously test their opponents’ goal in the opening stages. Aman Verma sent Tamworth’s first shot after eight minutes towards goal, but Harry Reynolds saved comfortably. Tom Wood then headed wide from a Johnny Herd corner and the match was becoming competitive in midfield with two visiting players booked for fouls

Tamworth
in the opening 25 minutes. An ambitious overhead bicycle kick by Nabil Shariff flew over the bar whilst at the other end after 32 minutes, Gregg Smith did get the ball in the St Neots net, but the Referee had blown for an infringement. Tamworth were enjoying the greater share of possession but St Neots back line looked confident and sound and goalkeeper Reynolds did not have a serious save to make. His counterpart was also untroubled in the first half although Ben Worman saw a shot blocked and both Ryan Beswick and Tyrell Waite sent their efforts wide of target at the other end. The visitors stated the second half well with Waite weaving his way past two defenders to test Reynolds at his near post and in a bid to boost his teams’ fortunes Dennis Greene made two early second half substitutions but to little effect. Visiting keeper Jas Singh was then forced into a serious save to deny Dion Sembie-Ferris and St Neots also made a change with Claudio Ofosu replacing Worman. Midway through the second half St Neots though they should have been awarded a penalty when Dylan Williams picked up a pass from Devante Stanley and burst into the penalty area to be upended but the Referee judged that the St Neots player had illegally dived, and he was booked for simulation. Further substitutions followed as the sides sought late inspiration in a bid to find a winning goal and it was St Neots who came closest to breaking the deadlock. With nine minutes left the best team move of the match saw Dion Sembie-Ferris and Nabil Shariff open up the visiting defence
0
and when the latter went clear his shot beat the visiting keeper but narrowly skimmed the angle of bar and post. Four minutes later substitute Ofosu beat his marker on the edge of the area to send Stanley clear on the right and his searching low cross from the bye line was only inches from conversion by Shariff. After this burst of St Neots pressure it was left to Stanley to save the day in added time with a timely interception to rob Waite in front of an open goal. St Neots: Reynolds, Stanley, Herd, Knight, Short, Parr, Sembie-Ferris, Wood, Shariff, Williams, Worman Subs: Ofosu (for Worman 65 mins), Miles (for Wood 76 mins), Olaniran, Watkins and Douglas. Cards: Williams (Y – 71 mins), Knight (Y – 75 mins) Goals: none
