Greenie’s Greeting Mike Green Good evening everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium, home of the Saints and the Mick George Academy, for tonight’s rearranged Evostik League South Premier Division Central match. Tonight we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Tamworth FC and we hope your first ever visit to St Neots is a pleasant one. Another tough game on Saturday saw us travel to Coalville Town for the second time inside a calender month and we were rewarded with a battling display and a share of the spoils with a 1-1 draw. Dion Sembie-Ferris opened the scoring in the first half and the hosts levelled things up in the second period, this after we had lost Johnny Herd to a second yellow card. It was great to have skipper Luke Knight available after injury and Taylor Parr may well be available for tonight’s fixture too after his enforced absence due to the knock picked up at Lowestoft Town. This coming Saturday sees us continue our foray into this season’s Buildbase FA Trophy so please do try and bring as many people along as possible for what promises to be a cracking tie against Barwell FC here at the Premier Plus Stadium. Admission for this game will be our standard charge however please be aware that season tickets are NOT valid for this fixture. Saturday saw our Reserves exit the Kershaw Premier League Knockout Cup at the second round stage as a hotly disputed penalty saw Bar Hill progress to the third round. Better news for our Development Squad, who progressed in the Creake Shield, beating Burwell Swifts Reserves 6-0 out on the GESS Arena so well done to Darren and his youngsters. Talking of youngsters, out Youth Team still sit proudly at the top of the Thurlow Nunn Youth League Cambridge Division, their latest result ending in a 5-0 win over Histon, here, at the Premier Plus Stadium. Saturday evening saw us host our SKA-NiTE and everyone who came along was thoroughly entertained by the fantastic BIG 10 Ska Band and the equally impressive Frontline Sound System. Don’t forget on the 17th November we host A Kick Up the 80’s, a night of live music from Henry Priestman and Les Glover plus BlackCat 107fm providing the disco so do come along for what promises to be another great night.

From the Dugout… With
Firstly I’d like to welcome our visitors for tonight’s rearranged fixture and of course their supporters too.
A hard fought point earned on Saturday at Coalville last time out with a display of guts and character and was nice to see Dion back amongst the goals after a string of improved performances in recent games. Great support from our hardcore fans who travelled in decent numbers once more and as always, this was greatly appreciated by all of us. Back to tonight’s game against an improving Tamworth side who found life at this level tricky in the opening weeks of the season however a change of management has seen results improve so I’m sure that we will have to be at our best to gain anything positive from tonight’s match as we know, there are no easy games in this division. Thanks to all the supporters who attended my open forum last Tuesday evening, an enjoyable and worthwhile exercise for both parties I believe. Back to the game and as always, we hope to entertain you all with a display of flair, grit and determination so please get behind us from the first whistle.

TAMWORTH FC Joined League: 1933 Chairman: Bob Andrews Website: www.thelambs.co.uk Over four score years ago, in the summer of 1933, a football team in Tamworth was just a dream for the lovers of the beautiful game who worked together to set up a new club in the town. The demise of Tamworth Castle FC left the town with no senior level football club, but a campaign involving a town businessman and the local newspaper set the wheels in motion to form another club, and so Tamworth FC was born. The original ground on which the team played was next to the now demolished Jolly Sailor pub, and from 1934 onwards The Lamb became the club’s new home, where they remain to this day. The club played its early football in the Birmingham Combination, switching to the Birmingham League (now known as the West Midlands League) in the 1950s, but it wasn’t until the 1960s that the club achieved notable success with two league championships and numerous victories in the League Cup, Birmingham Senior Cup and Staffordshire Senior Cup. The club also reached the First Round of the FA Cup on two occasions, and on the second of those occasions they progressed to the Second Round by virtue of a 2-1 victory over Torquay United at The Lamb. These were good times indeed
for Tamworth FC, but it wasn’t to last. Despite gaining entry to the Southern League in 1972, the club’s fortunes went on a dramatic slide as the 1970s proved to be as cruel as the 1960s had been kind. Attendances fell to record low levels; The Lamb fell into disrepair and it became a major effort just to keep the club alive. In 1984, a consortium of local businessmen (including the current Chairman Bob Andrews) took the club over and set about restoring it to its former glory. The club returned to the West Midlands League and gradually found their feet again, eventually winning the Championship in 1988 and regaining their Southern League status after a four years hiatus. The following season Tamworth progressed to even greater things reaching the final of the FA Vase, and, on May 6th 1989 in front of a Wembley crowd of 26,487 (the record attendance for the Vase final at the ‘old’ Wembley), they played out a 1-1 draw with Sudbury Town and won the replay at Peterborough four days later 3-0 to give the club, and the town, possibly its finest moment ever. The Vase triumph did not crystalise into further success though and manager Graham Smith left the club two years later while four managers in four seasons failed to springboard the club until February 1995
when former Birmingham City player Paul Hendrie with instant results. He turned another mediocre season around and guided the Lambs to within a point of promotion then secured the 1996/97 Southern League Midland Division Championship by a 26 point margin. The next boost came in January 2001, when former European Cup winner Gary Mills was appointed manager and with the club staring relegation squarely in the face his impact was almost as instant as Smith’s. Firstly he guided the side away from the drop, and then masterminded a Championship challenge in the 2001/02 season, which ended in heartbreaking fashion on the final day at Folkstone. Mills left Tamworth, and the club swiftly appointed his assistant Darron Gee into the hot seat. Gee and the club as a whole started the 2002/03 campaign with a renewed sense of purpose and were rewarded with the Southern League Champions with 3 weeks left of the season. It could have been even better but a storming run to the FA Trophy final, ended in disappointment at Villa Park with defeat to Burscough. Mark Cooper was then appointed, and fans were rewarded with two fantastic FA Cup runs. The first against Stoke City in 2005-6 was halted
by penalty kicks in a replay in the Third Round Proper and a live BBC TV fixture against Championship side Norwich City in 2006-7 ended in defeat. Lack of progress in the league saw ‘Coops’ leave and Mills return soon after and promotion to Conference National was achieved with a game to spare in 2008-09 . When Mills departed former Nottingham Forest star Des Lyttle, took hold of the reins but with relegation a distinct possibility stepped down with four games to go and the then academy coaches including Vase winner Dale Belford stepped up to help and it went to the wire, but a nervy televised victory ensured survival with 14 minutes of the season remaining. Prior to his sad passing in December 2011, long serving Club President Len Gendle predicted the FA Cup victory at Gateshead and The Lambs went on to be narrowly defeated by Premiership side Everton in a 3rd Round match at Goodison Park as boss Marcus Law rebuilt his squad but found the going increasingly tougher and in early January 2013 assistant Dale Belford was asked to step in as caretaker manager once again and rescue the club from the drop with the highest ever top flight points haul. Belford continued as permanent boss into the 2013-14 season, although the side was ultimately relegated from the Conference Premier so the successful former Wrexham player manager Andy Morrell and assistant Mike Fowler came to the club, taking them on a World beating 12 game winning run
whilst narrowly missing out on the playoffs in in 2014-15 and 2015-16. During the summer break of 2016 Chairman Bob Andrews oversaw the multi-million pound replacement of The Lamb’s 80+ year old grass pitch with a state of the art artificial 3G surface, one of only a handful of similar surfaces in the top two tiers of the non league pyramid at the time. It completely changed The Lamb from being a one team venue into a facility for the club’s burgeoning youth and academy sides as well as bringing the community into a popular hub for local football for all abilities across all ages. Despite the progress being away from the first team, inconsistent results and performances conspired to relieve Morrell of his duties in February 2018. Following relegation to step 3 of the non league pyramid at the end of the season, assistant Fowler took the reins into 2018-19 as Head Coach alongside newly appointed Director of Football, Tim Harris, who had tasted success with home town club Gloucester City and promotion to the Football League with Newport County. However, after defeat in the FA Cup to local rivals Hednesford, Fowler stepped down and Harris steadied the ship for one game until former Boston United and St Neots Town boss Dennis Greene was appointed on 20 September 2018.
MANAGEMENT Dennis GREENE Dennis was confirmed as First Team Manager on 20 September 2018. He has enjoyed significant success in the higher echelons of non league football and recently secured back to back National League North play off finishes with Boston United in 2014/15 and 2015/16 before departing in November of the following season. Earlier in his managerial career, Greene achieved successive promotions with St Neots, and has also been in charge at Histon and Boston Town, as well as holding youth development roles with Charlton Athletic. In his younger days, as a player, he was snapped up by Martin O’Neill and experienced back-to-back promotions and two Wembley triumphs with Wycombe Wanderers before tasting success overseas and playing in Europe.

It’s that time of the year again where the FA Cup take centre stage – first round proper weekend is upon us and we await to see where this year’s FA Cup shocks will be. After a season where Lincoln City remarkably reached the quarter-final against Arsenal, last year was a bit quieter with no Non-League representation in the third round. Although we still had some good moments to enjoy along the way. I fancy the Non-League flag to be flying high again in 2018-19, though. It’s always struck me how the Sliding Doors effect is brought into even sharper focus when it comes to the FA Cup. The ifs, buts and maybes that populate football chat after every game, can often be the difference between a money spinning run and sitting at home watching someone else enjoy one instead. Inevitably, if a club is to have a good run then they will have had the run of the green you need to win close games. And that’s the beauty of it. Despite the best efforts of people to talk down the competition, for Non-League clubs it still feels very much alive. You watch this season. If (when) the scalp of Football League side is claimed this coming weekend, the victory will soon be followed with words like, magic and romance. And that’s all good. Because that’s exactly it is. But a lot of it will be centred on the argument they are ingredients that have gone missing from the competition. For Non-League clubs I’d argue against that claim. Maybe at the latter stages for the bigger Premier League clubs, but here it’s going well, thanks. It is reason for a club to dream, can launch careers and transform long-term fortunes. Even more so with the welcome doubling of the FA Cup prize money – with the introduction of handing losing clubs some cash in the extra preliminary and preliminary rounds also making a big difference. The FA Cup is a perfect vessel to put money into the game through results on the pitch. Personally, I’d like to see some of the pound notes ring-fenced for clubs to use on infrastructure, equipment or ground issues. But there has to be an appreciation that if a club wins money it is entitled to use how it sees fit. If that means bringing in a new striker to help the season, then that’s their right. Of course, for most Non-League clubs the FA Cup is already over for another year. For many it was finished at the beginning of August. For others, just making it through a couple of rounds was success enough. I took a trip to Lymington Town for their second round qualifying clash with Torquay United. Although the Wessex League side were well beaten on the day, it was obvious to see what their slice of FA Cup history had brought the club, with an ex-Football League side at home in front of the BBC online cameras. You can be sure the interest it created would have brought in more fans. The stories are only just being written and we at The NLP can’t wait to cover them.
FA TROPHY – FIRST ROUND QUALIFYING
St Neots Town St Neots maintained their record in the FA Trophy of having only lost once in the First Round Qualifying since joining the Southern League eight seasons ago. However, this was a hard-fought game between two well-matched sides and St Neots only saw off the challenge of their visitors Matlock Town because of a determined second half performance. It was suitable revenge for a Second Round Qualifying defeat at Matlock four years ago, and it was achieved despite being short of three first choice players due to injury. Club skipper Luke Knight and Harry O’Malley had both missed the midweek trip to Lowestoft, and they were joined on the treatment table by defender Taylor Parr. Into the side came full back Matty Miles into an unfamiliar midfield role alongside Tom Wood – also a defender – but it was another defender Russell Short who earned the plaudits for a faultless display at the heart of the home defence. St Neots created the first real opening after three minutes when Tom Wood headed on a Johnny Herd throw and Nabil Shariff was only inches away from reaching the ball in front of a gaping net. Matlock then settled quickly looking stronger in midfield and Craig King headed across the face of goal from a Nathan Whitehead cross. Jordan Chappell saw a well-placed shot comfortably saved by Harry Reynolds and Whitehead shot wide when left unmarked on the edge of the penalty area. At the other end Shariff knocked down a cross

Matlock Town
to the feet of Russell Short but off-balance he fired over the bar and back came Matlock with King heading wide when well placed. A defensive error by the visiting side let in Dion Sembie-Ferris but he volleyed over the bar and on the stroke of half time a Shariff shot was deflected over the bar by a retreating defender. The heavy rain welcomed the players back after the break making ball control more difficult but St Neots were quickly into their stride and after 49 minutes a Sembie-Ferris cross found Gary Wharton eight yards from goal, but his shot rebounded to safety off the outside of a goalpost. The visitors tried to vary their attack by sending on two attacking players but the St Neots back line was well able to deal with anything thrown at them. Just past the hour visiting keeper Ross Durrant did well to block a close range shot from Shariff but the striker had to wait only three minutes to make up for that disappointment as Tom Wood won the ball and sent it over the retreating Matlock defence and Shariff went clear before cleverly chipping the ball over the advancing keeper for what proved to be the winning goal. St Neots sent on Claudio Ofosu for Gary Wharton and the substitute was immediately involved twice having shots either blocked or well-saved. Nathan Whitehead went close for the visitors having his effort deflected over the bar and Matlock’s recently acquired striker Luke Hinsley fired into the side-netting. As the second

half progressed St Neots looked the more comfortable team in possession and a full length save by Durrant prevented Ofosu from extending the lead. In the final five minutes Matlock redoubled their efforts and Reynolds saved well from a Harry Vince free kick and on the break Shariff twice went close. The nearest to an equaliser for the visitors came late in the game when defender Bradley Beatson saw his volley clip the crossbar and bounce to safety.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE CENTRAL PREMIER DIVISION
Coalville Town This match was regrettably marred in time added on at the end of the ninety minutes when the Referee, Jamie O’Connor from Bolsover, totally lost control following a rather innocuous foul. He ended up issuing four yellow cards in that unsavoury ending – one a second yellow which became a red, and another when he brandished the red card again only to rescind it after being corrected by an Assistant Referee. It was a great shame because it had been a very good contest between two wellmatched sides and on the balance of play a draw was a fair outcome. St Neots dominated the opening 45 minutes but the Coalville response immediately after the break was swift and effective as they pinned St Neots back in their own half. However the initial flash point had come twelve minutes from time with the visitors holding on to their slender one-goal half time lead. In a home attack Johnny Herd was harshly judged to have fouled Alex Dean and having previously picked up a yellow card when he injudiciously kicked the ball away following the issue of a free kick, and he was sent off leaving St Neots to see out time with ten men. There was a return in this match after an absence of six matches through injury, for skipper Luke Knight who settled in effectively and a recall for the on-loan Ben Worman with Dan Olaniran and Gary Wharton making way. Conditions for football were difficult with a swirling and unpredictable wind playing havoc when the ball was in the air. St Neots had Devante Stanley to thank for a second minute last ditch tackle when Tim Berridge had freed Kairo Mitchell whilst it took home keeper Rudy Soloha

two attempts to retrieve a snap shot from Matt Miles. St Neots then settled to dominate play for a spell and were rewarded after 25 minutes when a long throw by Johnny Herd was not cleared and Dion Sembie-Ferris swivelled to hit a lob in off the far post for that 1-0 lead. Seven minutes later the same visiting player looked to be illegally brought down from behind, but the Referee waved away credible penalty appeals. St Neots continued to enjoy the bulk of possession and home skipper Steve Towers was booked for bringing down Ben Worman in flight. The first half ended with incidents at both ends as Tom McGlinchey and Mitchell combined to get the better of the St Neots defence for Courtney Wildin to pick out the head of the unmarked Joe Doyle-Charles but he wastefully looper his header onto the roof of the net, and then at the other end Nabil Shariff combined neatly with SembieFerris but his run towards goal was halted as Soloha left his area to head away. The second half saw a dramatic change in fortune. Coalville looked energised by the break and set about looking to pull back the deficit. Harry Reynolds did well to gather a searching Kalern Thomas cross and the same player then neatly won his way to the bye line to cross to find Wildin who fired high over the bar. Alex Dean then sent a free header well wide and Mitchell turned a defender to curl in a shot that rebounded off the inside of a post. Stanley was called upon again to produce a saving tackle to deny Mitchell a clear shot, and Reynolds saved comfortably from Towers. St Neots did break out for SembieFerris to see his net-bound shot

deflected for a corner and just when St Neots seemed to have weathered the attacking storm, they lost Johnny Herd and had to go on the defensive with Matt Miles filling in at full back. Two minutes after the dismissal Wildin wasted a free kick in a prominent position but he then made up for it by supplying the cross for Kaine Mitchell to rise above the defence to head home the equalising goal. On the break Shariff sent St Neots final effort across the face of goal before that disappointing ending that saw Towers dismissed and Knight, Stanley and Dean all pick up those yellow cards. With upcoming midweek opponents Tamworth winning, St Neots dropped one place in the table to seventeenth. St Neots: Reynolds, Stanley, Herd, Knight, Short, Wood, Sembie-Ferris, Miles, Shariff, Williams, Worman Subs: Watkins (for Sembie-Ferris 86 mins), Ofosu, Olaniran and Douglas. ST NEOTS TOWN U18 With another hat trick taking his goals tally to 17 in seven matches – 15 of those in the last four – Joe Rider led his side to a five points lead in the league table with a convincing victory over visiting Histon. It completed a league double over the visitors this month but to their credit they never gave up trying despite the goals tally against them building up. St Neots got off to a sensational start with their opening goal after just 19 seconds as David Muse harried defender and goalkeeper into a stupid error which left the home player to walk the ball into an empty net. To their credit this did not seem to faze the visitors who forgot their indiscretion and competed well in the next half hour. St Neots enjoyed a much great share of possession, but the final ball was never quite right, and the visitors defended comfortably against the league’s leading scorers. Chances came and went with Tom Leagas and Adrian O’Hara both shooting wide

before Jeffrey Alihonou created Histon’s first opening but he could not finish. From a Bradley Brown cross Joe Rider stretched to head the ball onto the roof of the net and the same player saw another effort deflected for a corner by Joshua Byrne. Louis Hobbs looked the most dangerous attacking player for the visitors and he too lifted a shot over the keeper and onto the roof of the net. Then in the final minute of the first half from a sublime cross by Oliver Rowland, Joe Rider opened his account for the evening with a well-placer header to give St Neots a 2-0 half time advantage. With Brown and Sam Routs orchestrating the St Neots midfield, the home side continued to dominate after the interval. Routs fired wide and Leon Fulianty up for a free kick flicked the ball against the near post. Leagas had a shot deflected and the pressure eventually paid off after 63 minutes when brilliant individual skill by

Joe Rider saw him take two defenders out of the game before turning and shooting past Harvey Daniels. Three minutes later a Leagas corner was punched clear by Daniels but only as far as Adrian O’Hara who sent a low shot into the corner of the net for 4-0. With seven minutes left Histon substitute Joe Cesare had Histon’s best chance for a consolation goal when he went clear of the St Neots’ defence but lost control and almost inevitably Joe Rider was to have the final word as he collected a Kyle Rudland cross and his hat trick at the far post to net from a narrow angle to complete the 5-0 victory, a minute from time. St Neots: Brewer, Leagas, Goodridge, O’Hara, Rowland, Fulianty, Muse, Brown (B), Routs, Rider, Wood Subs used: Coppolaro, Rudland, Lennon and Frezza. (John Walker)
