TOP 50 IN REGIONAL UNIVERSITIES NORTH SAINT PETER’S REACHES HIGHEST RANK EVER IN U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT CATEGORY The annual U.S. News & World Report issue on colleges and universities ranked Saint Peter’s University 45th in the Regional Universities North category for 2024, an increase of 13 places over the previous year. Now a Top 50 school in regional universities that provide a full range of undergraduate and master’s programs, Saint Peter’s climb in the rankings is significant for two reasons. It’s the highest rank ever for the University and it reflects a change in the ranking system that, according to U.S. News & World Report, places “a greater emphasis on social mobility and outcomes for graduating college students.”

Cornacchia, Ph.D., described the 2024 process as especially gratifying since it recognizes institutions that transform the trajectory of students’ lives. “We believe the changes to this year’s rankings reveal a more accurate depiction of what colleges and universities have to offer,” he said. “Saint Peter’s gains are a reflection of the University’s dedication to student success, particularly in areas that matter to our students.”

GANNON HALL LAB UPDATES The physical environment in which scientific research is conducted is critical to discovery, innovation and success. With funding from the New Jersey Educational Facilities Authority, Gannon Hall will undergo significant infrastructure improvements to update and modernize air flow controls and exhaust systems in the academic building’s laboratories. The project will ensure optimum temperatures for experiments and research while providing a safer and more efficient work area for faculty and students to conduct studies with sensitive materials.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS RECOGNIZED For more than a decade, Saint Peter’s University has championed environmental sustainability in response to the ever-changing global environment. The University’s efforts were recently recognized by the Catholic Climate Covenant’s first U.S. Laudato Si’ Champions Awards. The Laudato Si’ Champions Awards honor institutions across the United States that have made outstanding achievements in environmental sustainability and stewardship.

Saint Peter’s actively promotes environmental consciousness, ecological responsibility, sustainable practices and environmental justice within its campus community and beyond. The esteemed award acknowledges the University’s commitment to exemplifying the principles of Laudato Si’ in its academic programs, campus initiatives and broader community engagement.

According to the official ordinance, “bestowing the moniker Peacock Way on this portion of Glenwood Avenue is a fitting way to recognize Saint Peter’s enduring active presence in Jersey City.” The University’s involvement in the city was also praised by Councilwoman Mira Prinz-Arey, who said that some of the best interns she’s ever had have come from Saint Peter’s.

Titled, “Resolute & Resilient: 150 Years of Excellence and Opportunity,” the self-study engaged more than 100 members of the University community. In addition to meeting the standards for accreditation, the self-study identified areas for improvement that align with the University’s strategic plan, Vitality, Value and Viability.

An independent evaluation team representing MSCHE visited the Jersey City campus in April 2023 to review the self-study, meet with faculty, administrators, staff and students, and make final recommendations on the accreditation outcome. The visiting team was especially impressed with the University’s student-centered approach, positive outcomes and the successful integration of the Jesuit and Catholic mission into all Saint Peter’s activities.

MASS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT USHERS IN NEW ACADEMIC YEAR Presided over by Vice President for Mission and Ministry Rev. Andrew N. Downing, S.J., the Mass of the Holy Spirit took place on September 13, 2023, offering a ceremonial way for the Peacock community to get together, open the academic year and ask for blessings for the months to come.

To honor the University celebrating 25 years as a Hispanic Serving Institution, the Mass was said in both Spanish and English. Fr. Downing said this was meant to act as a reminder to the Saint Peter’s community to lift up the Hispanic community and recognize the value of their contributions.

As the nation honored Hispanic Serving Institution Week, September 11-17, 2023, Saint Peter’s was proud to not only take part, but also celebrate its 25th year as a HSI. Having received the designation in 1998, the University was the first among New Jersey private colleges and universities to attain HSI status and the first among all 27 Jesuit colleges in the United States, illustrating the University’s deep commitment to diversity, equity and excellence in education.

National HSI Week was commemorated and celebrated on campus with a banner unveiling, storytelling through Afro-Puerto Rican Folkloric dance, a parade and a TRansformative EXperience (TREX) Celebration Brunch for STEM majors and alumni who have participated in the program.

LAURELS RISING STAR IN TEACHING AND RESEARCH

Yosra Badiei, Ph.D.

The American Chemical Society, Women Chemists Committee recognized Yosra Badiei, Ph.D., associate professor of chemistry, with its 2024 Rising Star Award in Scientific Excellence. The Rising Star Award honors up to 10 outstanding women annually; the recipients are approaching mid-level careers and have demonstrated outstanding promise for contributions in their respective fields.

A Saint Peter’s University faculty member since 2014, Dr. Badiei has made significant contributions to the field of chemistry, particularly in the use of catalytic materials to create alternative energy sources. The principal investigator on numerous studies, the professor’s focus has branched into testing polymers to improve the efficiency of molecular catalysts in artificial photosynthesis, a promising strategy to convert sunlight into sustainable fuel.

Saint Peter’s undergraduates have been engaged in all aspects of Dr. Badiei’s research, including the design and synthesis of catalysts and further testing its stability in their polymer studies.

A 2023 study published by the professor and a team of six undergraduate researchers found a 100-fold increase in efficiency

when a molecular water-oxidation catalyst was attached to a surface-grafted polymer.

The investigation was conducted at Saint Peter’s and funded by the George J. Hilsdorf, S.J. Endowment Fund and in part via a $4.8 million STEM-PODER grant awarded to the University by the U.S. Department of Education. This study and many others are assisted by a collaboration established with the Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Dr. Badiei called the WCC Rising Star Award a distinctive honor for the University and its undergraduate STEM program. “The award is not just a recognition of my work.

It’s a testament to my dedicated and talented students and their efforts,” she said.

“Catalyzing Change: Molecular Catalysts for Artificial Photosynthesis to Empower a Diverse and Next Generation of Sustainable Chemists,” is the title of Dr. Badiei’s presentation for the ACS Spring 2024 National Meeting in New Orleans, a topic that aptly sums up her dedication to mentorship and research. Three of Dr. Badiei’s current students have submitted abstracts to the conference and are expected to attend. She will receive the award at a reception following the WCC Rising Star Symposium.

FREDERICK BONATO HONORED BY AEROSPACE MEDICAL ASSOCIATION The Aerospace Medical Association extended its gratitude to Executive Vice President and Provost Frederick Bonato, Ph.D., Former AsMA President for his tenure as Susan Northrup, M.D., editor-in-chief M.P.H. and Dr. Bonato of Aerospace Medicine and Human Performance at its Honors Night Celebration on May 25, 2023.

The publication is the AsMA’s official peerreviewed journal. During his 13-year tenure, Dr. Bonato oversaw approximately 3,000 manuscript submissions and collaborated with authors Elon Musk, former astronaut Scott Kelly (twin brother of former astronaut Mark Kelly) and Anil Mennon, who after serving as chief medical officer for SpaceX, became a NASA astronaut cadet.

In a testament to his commitment and service, NASA flight surgeon and current president of the AsMA, Joseph P. Dervay, M.D., remarked, “Dr. Bonato’s scientific expertise and critical reviewing skills have dramatically improved the quality and reputation of the journal, which indeed has a worldwide readership. He is deeply respected throughout the AsMA, and colleagues universally regard him as a true gentleman.”

During his term as editor, Dr. Bonato was awarded two presidential citations, elected a fellow of the AsMA and elected to the International Academy of Aviation and Space Medicine in 2015. His area of academic expertise is motion sickness and space motion sickness.

PROFESSORS SPOTLIGHT CENSORSHIP Two Saint Peter’s University faculty members discussed the implications of censorship and book bans in a recent segment for Asian American Life, a program about changemakers in art and literature that airs on CUNY-TV. Ernabel Demillo, M.S., chair and lecturer of communications, hosts the program. She interviewed Fatima Shaik, M.A., adjunct faculty of communication and former assistant professor of communication (retired), for the segment that was filmed in the newly renovated Theresa and Edward O’Toole Library.

Professor Shaik, a former PEN America trustee, has authored books for children and adults. Her most recent work, Economy Hall: The Hidden History of Free Black Brotherhood, was named the 2022 LEH Humanities Book of the Year. The broadcast segment highlighted the spike in book bans in schools and libraries, including more than 2,500 unique titles challenged in 2022-2023, according to the American Library Association. Good books are meant to challenge the mind, rather than be challenged or censored, according to Professor Shaik. “When you are in a classroom with a book it may be uncomfortable,” she said, “but you can have a conversation about it.”

Asian American Life broadcasts Monday through Thursday on CUNY-TV. DEMOCRATIZING THE ART MARKET Assistant Professor of Fine Arts Trish Gianakis, M.F.A., unveiled a collection of hybrid artwork encompassing physical pieces that are also backed by a digital asset stored in a blockchain or non-fungible token. “NFTs can democratize the art market,” Professor Gianakis explained in an article published on Yahoo!

Finance. “And if they are attached to a physical

product, traditional art buyers are comfortable with it because they are getting something they can put on their living room wall, as well as in their digital wallet.”

In addition to creating opportunities for art buyers, NFTs can also mitigate art fraud, which is estimated to be $6 billion each year. NFT art created by the fine arts professor and others comes with a certificate of authenticity that is hardwired into the digital asset, verifying provenance and eliminating forgeries.

FACULTY PARTICIPATE IN SUMMER SEMINAR AT NYU Michael Finetti, Ed.D., associate professor in the Caulfield School of Education, and Lori Ann Buza, J.D., professor in the Frank J. Guarini School of Business, participated in the workshop, “Exercising Enduring Self-Care to Rewire the Brain for Inner Peace & Happiness,” part of the Faculty Resource Network held at New York University in June 2023. The summer seminar provides interdisciplinary approaches to diverse topics, and the Saint Peter’s professors delved into the advantages of cultivating enduring self-care techniques to counteract the impact of consistent and traumatic stress.

BUSINESS PROFESSOR ORDAINED DEACON Karl C. Alorbi, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Frank J. Guarini School of Business, was ordained a permanent deacon of the Catholic Church on June 10, 2023, at the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Paterson, N.J. The Most Reverend Kevin J. Sweeney, D.D., Bishop of Paterson, officiated the ordination. Dr. Alorbi devoted more than four years of intensive study at Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology to prepare for the role.

LEADING THE INSTITUTE FOR STEM EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING Gregory Nasser is the newly appointed director of the Institute for STEM Experiential Learning, a resource that expands professional development opportunities for STEM undergraduates at Saint Peter’s University. The Institute was developed through a $4.8 million STEM-PODER grant for Hispanic Serving Institutions from the U.S. Department of Education.

Nasser brings a STEM background (he holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biology) and understanding of Ignatian values to the position. The former assistant director of Early College Programs at Montclair State University attended Xavier High School in New York. “I’m really excited to get back to the Jesuit values and mindset,” he said. He began the position last spring and has worked behind the scenes, collaborating with faculty on integrating career-based learning activities into the STEM curriculum and developing a digital badging/certificate program for STEM work-study, internship and research experiences. Now that the Institute is up and running, “It’s great to see students and guide them through all the opportunities,” he said.

Now undertaking its second round of the MPE, the University’s goal is to engage as much of the community as possible to ensure the findings reflect the true fabric of the campus. The past six years, since the first MPE, have been spent following up on the recommendations of the last report, and setting areas of focus for the next six years.

This year’s report identifies a few areas of focus, including: changes to the core curriculum—such as the incorporation of Ignatian seminars—to make for a distinctly Jesuit education, and examining how the University’s thriving graduate program also reflects the values of a Jesuit education.

1966 Mark McNulty retired after 50 years of legal practice. He has written two books, Beyond Hope, a story about an abused child overcoming all odds, and The Scrivener and the Deep State, a political thriller.

1969 Neal Goodman, Ph.D., shared that 60 years ago on August 30, 1963, he met his first Jesuit when he attended and led his first diversity and equity workshop at a high school retreat. This event changed his life, as he attended Saint Peter’s and eventually taught at the University for 33 years.

1970 Ted Kwiatkowski and Terry (Gutch) Kwiatkowski ’72 celebrated their 50th anniversary in July. They met in McIntyre Lounge in November 1968. They also welcomed their youngest grandchild, MaryRose, to the Peacock family during the magical Elite Eight run in March 2022.

1972 Ron Prezioso and Rita (Larkey) Prezioso ’74 were recently honored for their 50th wedding anniversary at a surprise party organized by their daughter, Robyn, who is a faculty member at Regis High School in New York City.

Francis J. Tevis, CPA, and his wife, Barbara, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 14, 2023, in Paris, followed by a river cruise and a trip to Vienna. They are blessed with two children and five grandchildren.

1975 Patrick Driscoll, Pharm.D., earned his degree in chemistry from Saint Peter’s. He later attended Brooklyn College of Pharmacy and became a registered, licensed pharmacist in several states. He also obtained his master’s degree in pharmaceutical science and a master’s degree in hospital administration. After more than 30 years, he retired from hospital administration. Dr. Driscoll and his wife, Lorraine, continue to work for a large corporation doing quality care.

1976 Lorraine (Zolnowski) Driscoll, M.D., earned her degree in biochemistry from Saint Peter’s. She then earned her Ph.D. at Cornell University and attended medical school. She has delivered more than 3,000 babies and performed hundreds of surgeries while raising three children.

Deborah K. Smarth, author of America’s Lost Opportunity: Stolen Victories 2012 (2013, 2015 editions) and 9/11: How America Changed, has written a new book aimed at middle school students titled, We Are All the Same but Different. The book has been launched by Doveline Press and is available for purchase through Barnes & Noble.

In September 2023, Saint Peter’s welcomed members of the Class of 1973 for a memorable Golden Peacock Alumni Weekend. Alumni celebrated the 50th anniversary of their graduation and raised $514,849 in support of the Class of 1973 Endowed Scholarship, The Rev. Victor R. Yanitelli, S.J., Recreational Life Center, The Saint Peter Fund and more to benefit Saint Peter’s students.
