Ignatian Values Our Jesuit tradition welcomes students of all religious backgrounds to grow, explore and practice their own faith, and to serve those most in need.
CURA PERSONALIS Latin phrase meaning “care for the whole person,” cura personalis is having concern and care for the development of the entire individual. This implies a dedication to promoting human dignity and care for the mind, body, and spirit.
MAGIS
Latin meaning the “more,” magis embodies the act of discerning the best choice in a given situation. It doesn’t mean to always do or give “more” to the point of exhaustion. Magis is the value of striving for the better — striving for excellence.
MEN AND WOMEN FOR AND WITH OTHERS This value embodies a spirit of giving and providing service to the poor and marginalized. We are encouraged to pursue justice on behalf of all persons. Ignatian values teach us that love is better shown in action rather than just in words.
CONTEMPLATIVES IN ACTION Developing the habit of reflection centers and strengthens our spiritual lives and guides our actions. The challenge posed by Ignatian values is to live a life of deep reflection and spirituality that affects every action and encounter.
Jesuit Educated A Saint Peter’s education is both personal and powerful. In fact, there aren’t many places to experience an education quite like ours. We’ve been committed to rigorous academics, a supportive environment, and Jesuit values since 1872. The Office of Mission and Ministry works to help the University community reflect on and live the Ignatian values. The opening of the Saint Peter’s University Food Pantry and Clothes Closet to the public makes Saint Peter’s the only institution in the country to have these services along with a Campus Kitchen. The Campus Kitchen is a community service program that seeks to save food that would be wasted from dining halls, cafeterias and grocery stores, and creates nutritious meals for those struggling with hunger. To date, the Campus Kitchen has served over 36,000 meals to Hudson County residents and recovered nearly 40,000 pounds of food.
