“What makes our program truly special is the undivided personal attention that students receive from faculty in and outside of the classroom. Additionally, community and clinical experiences are tailored to provide an in-depth examination of patient care in many different settings at many different levels.” — Lauren E. O’Hare, Ed.D., RN, Dean of Nursing

Your Academic Foundation The Core Curriculum Students are exposed to a rich core curriculum which includes courses in the humanities, natural and social sciences, fine arts, philosophy, and theology. Students learn to formulate ideas and communicate effectively, to read and write critically, and to synthesize knowledge from the core to their chosen major. They emerge as well-rounded individuals and better prepared nurses.

The Importance of Research Faculty at Saint Peter’s believe that research in nursing is critical in defining best practices and giving the patient the best possible care. Students often take a role in these projects.

“We learned the Socratic method in philosophy, which is to question everything. English Composition? Helps with nursing notes. Math? Calculating medication doses. History? Understanding various cultures. The Spanish language? I can now understand if someone is in pain or if they need something. Each class is a piece of the nursing puzzle, and once you graduate it all comes together.” — Taylor Lee ’17

“Nursing research can and should provide the health care arena tangible tools to evaluate nursing practice, and therefore ensure nurses are providing effective care based on evidence derived from research rather than habit.” – Lisa Garsman, PhD, APRN, FNP-BC Director BSN Program

Community Capstone Project Students participate in work with the Department of Health, school nurses, lead and immunization clinics, and visiting nursing associations where they evaluate health concerns and identify where services are lacking in the community.

Beyond the Classroom Experiential Learning and Real-world Preparation The Saint Peter’s Nursing Simulation Laboratory is an active facility that offers students hands-on clinical experience. Using a team approach, nursing students interact with the “Simulation Family” (SimMan, NursingAnnes, and SimBaby) which are life-like, interactive computer controlled models that mimic human physiology and response. Students are challenged in critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills while working out realistic medical scenarios. In this way, students gain confidence and are prepared to care for actual patients the day they step into a hospital or clinical setting. Students are able to broaden their experience starting their sophomore year with the start of clinical rotations in various nursing specialties.
