Health and Physical Education An area of study in a growing career market Leaders in health and physical education have an enormous opportunity to work towards improving the health and well-being of the American populace. Poor lifestyle-associated health-behaviors such as physical inactivity and improper eating are major contributors to the development of chronic disease which accounts for 75% of our health care costs. The Health and Physical Education program develops dynamic leaders who will be prepared for post-graduate studies, health and fitness-related employment, and professional service in a variety of areas including recreation and fitness centers, corporate fitness facilities, lifestyle medicine facilities, personal training establishments, school-based programs and coaching positions. For students who are interested in graduate studies in the areas of Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Nutrition, Athletic Training and Sports Medicine, the curriculum has been designed to focus on the undergraduate requirements for entry in to these graduate programs. The program is dedicated to innovative teaching, meaningful community and professional service, and creative scholarly endeavors. Our Health and Fitness Club and internship possibilities provide students with unique opportunities to serve and educate both within the Saint Peter’s community and beyond.

What can you expect as a Health and Physical Education major?

The Bachelor of Science Degree program in Health and Physical Education will: • Provide students with a solid foundation in the physical, social, and behavioral sciences as well as in the principles of teaching and learning to promote health and fitness. • Enhance one’s knowledge related to health information and issues as well as healthy lifestyle choices across the lifespan. • Prepare students for graduate study. • Integrate theory and practice through selected practical and field experiences. • Apply issues of social justice into an understanding of health and physical education issues. The program will enable students to: • Synthesize knowledge from the physical, social, behavioral and health sciences to roles in the fields of health, fitness, and physical education. • Acquire communication and leadership skills to serve as advocates for the promotion of health and fitness. • Enable students to acquire knowledge related to a wide range of contemporary health issues. • Use critical thinking skills and creativity to examine health-related topics and promote wellness. • Apply teaching and learning theories to physical and health education. • Utilize information technology and research skills in the study of health, fitness, sport, and physical education. • Acquire knowledge and skills related to motor learning and development, and instruction of individual, team and dual sports. • Incorporate ethical and legal concepts into the examination of issues in surrounding athletics, training, and health.
