Captain of S.S. Empire Light which was sunk by a German raider in the Indian ocean on 25th April 1941.
He was taken prisoner of war on the raider which was intercepted by HMS Cornwall on the 8th May, and which, in the ensuing engagement, was sunk with all on board.
