Board of Trustees 2015-2016 The San Francisco District of the Brothers of the Christian Schools formed the Board of Trustees in 1994 and entrusted the Board with the responsibility for ensuring that Saint Mary’s remains vitally and effectively Lasallian. The Board’s sacred trust is the Lasallian Mission of the school. The Board operates on a “macro level.” It establishes broad policies and delegates the task of carrying out its policies to the President, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Saint Mary’s.

Board members do not represent any constituency within the overall school community; they act in concert for the benefit of the school as a whole. The Board of Trustees represents the De La Salle Christian Brothers. Trustees provide the highest level of institutional leadership intended to advance the Lasallian spiritual and educational traditions. In contrast to standard public or private school boards, whose function is largely concerned with the operational management of schools, the Saint Mary’s Board of Trustees works to define the school’s vision and to create its Mission policies, particularly designed to address unmet educational needs of poor and marginalized students.

President’s Message Dear Friends, We thank all of you who so generously contributed to the success of another year. We again have much to celebrate and to be thankful for, certainly for all of you who have long remained loyal supporters of Saint Mary’s Mission and students. Each school year is linked to the vision, hard work, and generosity that have taken place in the years preceding it.

Thus we gratefully acknowledge the past, while celebrating the present and hoping for the wonderful things that the future might hold.

In the pages that follow, the article that describes the changes in the academic program over the past decade demonstrates how each year builds on the past and gives direction for the future, as does the following article

by Principal Dr. Pete Imperial in which he describes the rising SAT and ACT scores of our students and the outstanding college graduation rates of our alumni. What is happening with our students academically is truly good news. I commend Pete Imperial, Vice Principal Cathy Molinelli, and the faculty for their ever-continuing efforts to make the changes that allow Saint Mary’s to better meet the educational needs of her students.

Saint Mary’s Mission calls us to serve the children of working class and poor families. These families need tuition assistance to make a Saint Mary’s education possible for their children. I am again happy to report that during the 2014-2015 academic year, over 41 percent of our students received almost $2 million in tuition assistance. Providing these students a Lasallian education is at the core of Saint Mary’s Mission, and thus I specially thank those of you who generously support and contributed to the tuition-assistance program. You are keeping the Saint Mary’s doors open to all.

I also wish to mention that the Saint Mary’s Student Chapel continues to transition from dream to reality. This is another Mission-driven project, focusing on the faith, beliefs, and values that are the foundation of Saint Mary’s, and on the spiritual needs of our students as persons created by God. It will be a special place for community prayer and worship, as well as a place where students can go to be alone with their thoughts, away from the busyness of school and the stress that can go along with balancing academics, relationships, sports, and other activities. We are most grateful to all who are generously contributing to this important project.

What a Difference a Decade Makes!

The 2014-15 school year marked Pete Imperial’s tenth anniversary as Principal of Saint Mary’s College High School. In recognition of this milestone, Peralta Park Press is taking a look back at the many changes that have been made under Imperial’s leadership to promote the academic, social-emotional, and spiritual growth of Saint Mary’s students. Building on what he describes as the “cornerstone elements of a Lasallian education,” including the school’s commitment to creating a diverse, inclusive community, Imperial and his administrative team have guided students, staff, and families through a series of strategic initiatives that foster inquiry, advance depth over breadth, and prepare students to be lifelong learners.

Promoting Inquiry and Self-Directed Learning If you’ve been to even one event in which Principal Pete Imperial has shared his educational philosophy, you’ve no doubt heard him discuss the importance of students learning to be learners. “We’re moving to a constructivist approach to education,” he explains, “where 2

students are encouraged and supported to build their own understanding.” Besides being supported by research, this student-centered approach encourages exploration and makes school more engaging, says Imperial.

A cornerstone of Saint Mary’s updated academic program is a three-year sequence of courses in epistemology in which freshmen, sophomores, and juniors explore a broad range of concepts and issues and engage in discussions and exercises to promote critical thinking about complex topics. Seniors, for their part, now spend their final year at Saint Mary’s engaged in a project of their own choosing and design. These “capstone” projects create the opportunity for students to apply the knowledge and skills they’ve developed in their first three years under the guidance of a teacher-mentor.

With the increased focus on student-directed learning has come a corresponding shift in both assessments and grading practices. With the goal of fostering a growth mindset, teachers are increasingly adopting a philosophy and practice that Imperial calls “rigor with redemption.”

What that means, simply, is that students are given multiple opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge and skills and end-of-term grades reflect the growth in learning and comprehension.

“It used to be that if a student failed the first test, even if they got an A on the final, the best grade they could get was C or C+,” says Imperial. “The old way of grading didn’t necessarily build resilience or encourage growth,” he explains. “We want a grading system that encourages growth and rewards resilience.”

Infusing Technology into Teaching and Learning The Fall of 2013 marked an important shift in teaching and learning at Saint Mary’s College High School. That’s when the entire student body began using iPads to support and extend classroom learning. The small but powerful tool is transforming how students access information and work collaboratively. It’s also prompting a shift from traditional textbooks, which in some subject areas are outdated even before they go

Making Time for Learning

to print, to web-based texts and original-source material that capitalizes on multimedia to make information come alive.

Teachers received their own iPads a full year earlier than students, thanks to a generous gift from an anonymous donor and a $6300 donation from the Parent Association. With that extra time, teachers were able to explore uses of the new tool so they would be ready to optimize its use once it was introduced to students.

Families have the freedom to choose which iPad meets their needs and budget. Additionally, parents, alumni, and friends of Saint Mary’s contribute iPads (or funds for iPads) to ensure that every student has access to the technology.

The Saint Mary’s iPad initiative built upon earlier investments in technology, including a Macintosh lab, used for digital production and art classes, and presentation systems for all of the classrooms. New courses have been introduced over the last few years to take advantage of the new tools, including forensic science, sports medicine, and multimedia design.

Saint Mary’s wasn’t the first school in the Bay Area to put computers in the hands of all its students and teachers, but that doesn’t bother Imperial, who says he and his leadership team watched and waited “until the technology and price point were right.”

One thing that hasn’t changed with the introduction of iPads is the powerful role that teachers play in facilitating learning and academic, spiritual, and social-emotional growth, says Imperial.

The changes in teaching and learning have been supported by a new schedule that creates more opportunities for students and teachers to engage in complex projects and provides dedicated time for collaboration, academic support, and independent work.

Beginning in the Fall of 2011, Saint Mary’s switched from a semester to a trimester system.

With that shift came a reduction in course load for both students and teachers. It created the space for teachers to begin to introduce more complex assignments and for students to have time to go deeper into subjects. Changes have not come at the expense of credits or instructional time, either.

Although students have two fewer courses each term, they earn more credits at the end of the year and also spend more time per class.

The second major change was moving to a later start time two days a week. It’s been the most popular change with the students, says Imperial. “It took stress down a notch by giving students (and staff) a little extra time two mornings a week.”

Another strategic addition was the introduction of “A Block,” 45 minutes at the end of each school day that students can use in whatever way they see fit: they can meet with a teacher, study in a small group, or go home and get a jump-start on homework. The key is that students are in control of their time and their learning, says Imperial.

Building Community, Fostering Spiritual Growth Two days each trimester, the entire Saint Mary’s community stops regular classes and focuses time and attention on the non-academic components of a Lasallian education: building community and supporting students’ spiritual and social-emotional development. Lasallian Days, introduced in the Fall of 2011 under the direction of Vice Principal Cathy Molinelli,

have created the time and space for students to participate in class retreats, engage in service activities, and learn from and with alumni during an annual career exploration day.

The Lasallian Days program is an important complement to the increased focus on academic rigor and inquiry, says Imperial. “It’s where we help students learn and practice skills that help them navigate challenges and begin to understand their own spiritual and emotional needs.”

One of the key benefits of Lasallian Days is the opportunity for all students to participate in class retreats, without having to worry about missing classes, as was the case in years past.

Freshmen and sophomores meet together at Mont La Salle and Saint Mary’s College, respectively, while juniors and seniors participate in overnight retreats. Previously, says Imperial, students were forced to choose between academic and community-building time.

Measures of Success By several key measures, the changes over the past 10 years are yielding positive results for students. From student performance on assessments to college acceptances, the investment in technology, the shifting of schedules to support deeper learning and collaboration, and setting aside time for social-emotional and spiritual growth are reaping dividends for students.

“We have highly skilled and caring teachers, led by Cathy Molinelli, and a wonderful community of students and families,” says Imperial.

“It really is a team effort, and without truly excellent teachers it couldn’t work.”

Report from the Principal The Success of the Saint Mary’s College High School Academic Program WHEN THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION of Saint Mary’s College High School began its tenure in August 2005, it did so realizing that it was assuming leadership of a school that had been well stewarded. Our primary task—enhancing student learning—benefitted from a strong academic foundation. The fact that Saint Mary’s students of the classes of 2007, 2008, and 2009 have graduated from college at a much higher rate than the national average—55% of American college students who started college had earned a degree after six years, according to the National Student Clearinghouse—is evidence of the quality of education students received from Saint Mary’s (see Table 1).

This data is more impressive when it is disaggregated by subgroups. For Saint Mary’s females

who graduated between 2006 and 2009, the six-year college graduation rate is 68.7% (205 out of 298). Nationally, in 2008, 58.6% of females who started college earned their college degree after six years. For Saint Mary’s males who graduated between 2006 and 2009, the six-year college graduation rate is 59.1% (169 out of 286). Nationally, in 2008, 51.6% of males who started college earned their college degree after six years.

When disaggregated by ethnicity, the comparisons are even more impressive. In every category, Saint Mary’s alumni graduate at a much higher rate than their national cohorts. For example, 61% of Saint Mary’s African-American alumni who started college earned their college degree after six years, compared to a national rate of 37%, and 59% of Saint Mary’s Latino

alumni who graduated from high school in 2008 earned their college degree after six years, compared to 42% nationally.

One might note that the college graduation rates come from classes who graduated from Saint Mary’s over five years ago. Is there data to indicate how Saint Mary’s students today might fare? While one cannot predict the future, the data we are now seeing shows that Saint Mary’s students’ academic performance over the past five years continues to improve, particularly when compared to students state-wide and nationally. We believe this upward trend is due to refinements of the entire school program, executed by excellent educators.

Though the most visible changes in Saint Mary’s academic program were implemented in the last five years—the trimester schedule, curricular refinements, new instructional approaches, and new policies regarding assessment and grading—much research, preparation, and professional development preceded them.

That said, replacing the traditional semesterbased calendar with a trimester format afforded Saint Mary’s the opportunity to shape the school day and school year to optimize our use of time to enhance student achievement. This was done by eliminating impediments to student learning and by adopting research-supported alternatives. These included late-starts (9:00 am) on half of the school days, instituting daily after-class office hours so students can receive individual help, and reducing conflicts with important co-curricular activities that cause students to miss class time. More importantly, curricular refinements, aligned with changes in instructional methodology, emphasize analytical and evaluative thinking and require the marshaling of factual evidence to support arguments and opinions.

Finally, new approaches to assessment and new research-based grading policies support the development of student internal motivation, while more clearly communicating levels of student academic achievement.

Report from the Principal

The difficulty of the change process means that few schools initiate such substantial innovations. The results of the changes Saint Mary’s adopted, however, have been most rewarding.

In the past five years, Saint Mary’s students’ performance on the SAT and ACT, the nation’s two college admissions exams, has improved substantially (See Table 2) Over five years (Classes of 2011-2015), the mean-score performance by Saint Mary’s students on the SAT improved by 136 points, while California students’ mean scores decreased by 21 points, and U.S. students as a whole saw their scores drop by 10 points.

On the ACT, which measures college readiness in four academic areas (English, reading, mathematics, and science), the percentage of Saint Mary’s students who met the College Readiness Benchmarks in all four areas increased from 29% in 2011 to 50% in 2015.

Statewide in 2015, 37% of all students met the College Readiness Benchmarks in all four areas.

The most recent data for students nationally comes from 2014, when 26% of all students achieved the College Readiness Benchmarks in all four areas. (See Table 2.)

In short, Saint Mary’s academic innovations and adjustments correlate with substantial, quantifiable gains in our students’ academic performance in the past five years, as measured by the two college admissions’ exams—this, at a time when the performances of students in California and nationally have declined.

Our success is a result of four factors—the Lasallian Mission to educate and engage all learners in a value-centered environment, welltrained teachers committed to collaboration, a consistent focus on excellence and innovation provided by school leadership, and students who embrace academic challenge. Our program succeeds because each of these four elements complement and strengthen the others.

Campus News A New Look for Saint Mary’s Panther

John Manente ’04, designer of the new Panther, and his dad, Mike Manente, drew and painted the updated Panther in the gym.

In 1977, Brother Norman, FSC, Principal, asked new art teacher, Antone Olivier ’70, to design Panthers for the gym wall. The lettering under the painting was added in the 1990’s.

IN 1928, SAINT MARY’S STUDENTS chose the Panther as the school mascot. Over the years, the school has used many different images of the fierce and cunning cat. One of the most lasting and cherished images, painted by Antone Olivier ’70 shortly after he began teaching at Saint Mary’s, has graced the walls of the gymnasium for nearly 40 years.

New with the start of the 2015-16 school year, is an updated image designed by John Manente ’04, at the request of President Brother Edmond. John and his father, Mike Manente, painted the updated image on the gymnasium wall as part of the alumnisupported renovations to the facility this past summer. (The father-son artistic team has collaborated for years on a series of murals entitled, “The People of Oakland.”)

Saint Mary’s has begun using the new image on Panther gear (tee-shirts, jackets, and the like). It will be incorporated into athletic team uniforms as old uniforms need replacing.

The next time you’re on campus, stop by the gym and see our new mascot. It will be leading our teams to victory for years to come!

Joe McNally ’65 Joe McNally ’65 and wife Anne Benoit are currently in the process of retiring from their Christmas Tree Farm business in Paradise, California. Their retirement plans include Saint Mary’s as a co-beneficiary of their Trust. Joe returned to Peralta Park this June with Anne to celebrate his Golden Reunion. During the weekend festivities, he quietly informed Saint Mary’s of the couple’s intentions.

Alexander and Dolores McNally entrusted the education of their sons, Joe ’65, Tim ’69, and Brian ’77 to Saint Mary’s. Joe and Anne’s appreciation of Saint Mary’s lasted a lifetime. They were generous and loyal donors and were especially helpful in Saint Mary’s transition to co-education. Joe remarked, “My parents set an example for me and I want to continue their legacy. Saint Mary’s was good for me and I wish to play a role in the school’s continued success.” Families like the McNallys set an example for all of us that will move Saint Mary’s forward for generations to come.

The annual Saint Mary’s Golf Tournament, named in honor of Phil Doran ’63, raised over $40,000 to contribute to the much-needed tuition assistance program. It was a breezy day at Mira Vista Country Club that brought alumni and guests together for a fun day of golf and friendship. Saint Mary’s would like to thank Mira Vista for the special gift of a free day of golf for all of the tournament participants, due to the drought-like conditions of the course.

Thanks always to Wally English, parent, Walter Vayson ’89, Frank Brady ’52, Peter Boero ’64, and the rest of the golf committee for its commitment to helping Saint Mary’s achieve its goal of providing a Lasallian education to students in need, as well as bringing alumni, parents, and friends together for a fun day of golf.

Alumni News Congratulations Nate Fripp!

Nate Fripp ’96 joined the UCSB coaching staff after spending the past 10 years as the head coach for the girls’ basketball team at Saint Mary’s College High School. During his time with the Panthers, Nate compiled a 276-72 record. Thank you, Nate, for your dedication and loyalty to Saint Mary’s.

Class of 1975 Reunion

The Class of 1975 gathered at a restaurant for dinner on Friday, September 25 and met again the following day for Alumni Day at Saint Mary’s. Over 30 members of the Class of ’75 attended and enjoyed food, fun, and fellowship.

Alumni Day – the 80’s

Jonathan Renty and Fred Lewis, from the Class of 1987, served up a delicious BBQ for the “men of the 1980’s” and other alumni.

Erik Moore and Bobby Pope gathered members of the Class of 1985 at Erik’s home for an informal social. They raised their glasses to toast Saint Mary’s.
