The Origin of the Seal

The above emblem served as the first official seal of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools in the early 18th century, prior to the adoption of the familiar Signum Fidei, as seen in the Saint Mary’s Seal. Although the use of the Magi's star as “the sign of faith” greatly expresses the commitment of the Brothers and the ultimate intent of Lasallian Educational Pedagogy, the image above is a reminder to the Brothers and to all Lasallian Educators of the truly relational nature of their work as educators.

Shown in the seal Saint Joseph, recognizable because he holds the Lily, depicted with Jesus Christ, who is a young boy. John Baptist de La Salle continually reminded the Brothers of the example of Saint Joseph. Catholic Christian tradition speaks of the important role that Joseph played in the life of Jesus. Along with his wife Mary, Joseph served as Jesus' foster-father, raising Jesus to be a man of Faith, and guiding him through his own example of justice and integrity. It is traditionally considered that Joseph also taught Jesus the trade of carpentry, for during the years of his ministry people consider Jesus to be, "the Carpenter's son". Joseph understood that he had a great part in God's work, in raising the boy Jesus; God gave him Jesus so that Joseph might educate him and love him.

These notions are at the heart of everything Lasallian. The Brothers and their partner Lasallian Educators see their relationship with students as one in which God has given these young people to them so that they might educate them and love them. The Brothers and all Lasallian Educators, like Saint Joseph, are called to be an example of integrity and justice, guiding the young people God entrusts to their care, through the challenges of the process of maturity and growth, to a future role in building the Kingdom of God.

The Philosophy of the Enrichment Week Program Saint John Baptist de La Salle believed that Lasallian Educators are with their students from morning to evening; this meant that the education envisioned would be characterized by a fraternal relationship between teacher and students. The Lasallian Educator is totally immersed in the life of his or her students sharing their interests, their worries, and their hopes. Lasallian Educators are not so much schoolmasters pounding truths into their heads, as they an older brother and sister who help them to discern within themselves the call of the Spirit, to come to a better understanding of what is real, to recognize their abilities, and thereby to discover progressively their place in the world.

A part of Saint Mary’s mission is to educate the whole person by promoting the intellectual, spiritual, physical, and social development of each student while at the same time creating community. The administration, faculty, and staff are committed to living this commitment to educate the whole person through the curriculum, co-curricular programs, and day-to-day contact with students. Enrichment Week provides an additional means to develop and extend the school’s mission. During this special week each student will have an opportunity to choose and participate in a course that is of particular interest to him/her. The curriculum for Enrichment Week is developed by the faculty and contains a mix of academic, travel, career exploration, cultural, and recreational classes.

Participation in Enrichment Week is mandatory for all students, but the choice of specific classes is up to each individual student and his/her family. Since the program is an addition to, rather than a part of the regular curriculum, courses carry fees, which cover the cost of their materials, equipment, and/or transportation.

Please look carefully at the course offerings and make the choices appropriate for your children, paying particular attention to when and where each course meets each day. A lunch fair will be held in early January allowing students the opportunity to learn more about each course.

Students will be asked to choose 3 courses and register for those courses that same week.

Course rosters will be posted by the beginning of February.

Policies & Procedures Enrichment Week Courses All Enrichment Week courses are philosophically based on our Lasallian Educational Outcomes (LEOs). Each course is developed and/or coordinated by a Saint Mary’s faculty member. All courses correspond with one or more of the following categories. Students are expected and encouraged to take a course from a different category each year. In this catalog, courses are identified according to a Course Category number as indicated below: 1. Educational and/or Career Exploration 2. Cultural Experience 3. Recreation and/or Physical Wellness 4. Service and/or Spirituality Priority Numbers Priority numbers are randomly generated and assigned to each student beginning in their freshman year. These numbers are used when scheduling students into their selected courses. Students with lower numbers are more likely to get their first or second choice. Almost every student is enrolled in one of their three choices.

Course Registration Students will register for Enrichment Week courses online through our Saint Mary’s website beginning Friday, January 8.

Registration forms need to be printed out by each student, then signed by a parent/guardian, and returned to homeroom no later than Wednesday, January 13, 2016, also forms will be collected during homeroom throughout that week. Failure to turn in a signed registration form will result in the student losing their priority number.

The Enrichment Week Registration Form is not only used to register the student in a course, but also it serves as the permission slip for the student to participate.

No Repeated Courses Students are expected to take a different course each year and they are encouraged to take one class from each Course Category throughout their four years at Saint Mary’s. Students are not allowed to repeat a course unless approved by the course instructor and the Enrichment Week Director prior to registration in the course.

Transportation Many courses require some off-campus travel. The majority of off-campus travel is usually done via public transportation (BART or bus). Since many students have BART tickets or a bus pass, students are responsible for the costs of local public transportation to course sites, unless otherwise specified in the final course itinerary. Transportation outside of the Bay Area will be incorporated into the course cost and arranged by the school. We are always in need of parent volunteers to drive; parent drivers help keep course costs down. If you would like to volunteer as a driver, please contact Cathy Molinelli via email at cmolinelli@stmchs.org.

Course Itinerary Every teacher will provide the school and each registered student with a course itinerary. This itinerary will provide dayto-day details, including meeting and departure times, activity schedules, locations for each day, and transportation information.

Enrichment Week Parent Meetings for Overnight Trips & Immersions Some courses require that a parent/guardian and the student come to the Enrichment Week Parent Meeting to meet the teacher, complete any other required permission forms and obtain insurance/health care information. Some travel courses, and all immersion programs have been sponsoring on-going meetings with students and parents. The required forms for these courses will be completed in one of these sessions. For those enrolled in these courses, the students and their parents will be required to attend the Enrichment Week Parent Meeting on Wednesday, February 17, at 7:00 pm.

This is a mandatory meeting.

Failure to attend this meeting may result in a student’s inability to participate in an overnight/travel course. Students traveling with the Immersion Programs will also meet at 7pm in Auditorium that same evening.

Paying for Enrichment Week Courses For courses under $250, Saint Mary’s will bill families by mail in early February for the full cost of the course. For courses over $250, the fee will be divided into two installments. The first installment should be mailed in February and the second installment in March. If you receive financial assistance from Saint Mary’s or your tuition account is not current, and you plan to take a course over $250, prior clearance must be given by the Finance Office. Financial Assistance There is limited financial assistance available for the Immersion Programs only. If you are requesting financial assistance please contact Mark Medeiros, Director of Finance via email at mmedeiros@stmchs.org before the October deadline.

Scholarships & Grants Students are encouraged to apply for The Cameron Fuller-Holloway Memorial Fun Fund Grant ~ details are provided in a separate handout. This is NOT a needs based scholarship - all are welcome to apply.

No Refund Students missing a course or a portion of a course due to an excused or unexcused absence or any tardiness will not be refunded money used to pay for the course. Most courses have required prepayments for materials, supplies, outside instructors, and transportation.

Cancellation of a Course or Increase in Fees As courses are developed, teachers create a course budget and cost. Sometimes admission fares, transportation, or food costs change from the time the course was developed to the time the course is actually held. If there is an increase in course cost, students will be notified in advance.

If a course is cancelled due to lack of enrollment or for another unforeseen reason, students will be offered an opportunity to join another course that has an opening.

Transcripts Enrichment Week courses will appear on students’ transcripts.

All school policies described in the Student Parent Handbook are in effect during Enrichment Week.

Attendance & Tardies • All school polices regarding attendance and tardiness are in place during Enrichment Week.

• If a student is ill during Enrichment Week, parents need to phone in the absence to the Attendance Hotline (510) 559-6211 in our Main Office. Notes are required when the student returns to school.

• Students are required to complete the course in which they have enrolled. If a student misses a portion of the course because of an excused absence, s/he must make up the hours missed through an individual internship that must be approved by the Enrichment Week Program Director. The internship must be completed before the end of the school year.

• The Enrichment Week Director will handle all unexcused tardies. Students who are off-campus and have unexcused tardies will serve detention by arrangement with the Vice Principal of Student Affairs.

• If a student misses a half-session (over 2 hours) it will be considered a full absence.

• If a student misses a portion of the course due to an unexcused absence, it will be considered truancy; please refer to the Student/Parent Handbook for consequences on truancy.

Behavior Issues during Enrichment Week • Inappropriate behavior will incur consequences during the Enrichment Week course, as well as disciplinary action at Saint Mary’s upon the students’ return.

• On-Campus: A student who is sent out of class while taking a course on campus is to report to the Main Office.

The Enrichment Week Director will determine appropriate disciplinary action.

• Off-Campus Day Courses: If a student on an off-campus course is asked to leave for behavioral reasons, the instructor of the course will phone the school and speak to the Vice Principal for him/her to determine whether the student will be picked up by a parent at the course site or the instructor will send the student home after consultation with the student’s parents.

• Off-Campus Overnight and Travel Courses: All school policies described in the Student-Parent Handbook are in effect during Enrichment Week, regardless of where the course is held. At the required parent meeting(s), the faculty member will discuss with parents what the procedure will be if a student needs to be sent home from the activity for his/her behavior. Inappropriate behavior will incur consequences during the Enrichment Week course, as well as disciplinary action at Saint Mary’s upon the students’ return.

Explore the magnificent coastal redwoods in this outdoors oriented E-Week adventure! Our week together will focus on recharging our batteries as we take in the fresh air of the Russian River area of Northern California. Each day we’ll experience something unique to the coastal redwoods, which may include speeding down a zip line high atop the redwood trees, feats of bravery and strength completing a ropes challenge course, immersing ourselves in nature by kayaking in the Russian River, hiking through old-growth redwood groves, enjoying glorious vistas, and community service at a local camp. There will be ample community time at our picturesque Russian River area housing where we will cook and break bread together as we relax, slow down, and strengthen the bonds that connect us. The ideal student participant should be ready to try new things, explore interests they never knew they had, and value time getting away from it all!

Amazing Race: Bay Area Exploration

The Amazing Race! Are you looking to be Challenged! Be advised . . . This course is a takeoff from the popular American reality game show seen on CBS designed for those students looking to be physically and mentally challenged in a competitive yet fun and spirited approach.

This race will organize students into four teams and race around the Bay Area. The race is split into roughly five days of competition, where students and their teams will be physically and mentally challenged from start to finish. The race will require teams to deduce clues, navigate themselves in foreign areas, interact with local businesses, perform physical and mental challenges, and use public transportation options.

Students will have a limited daily budget provided for each leg of the race which may include funds for meals and travel expenses necessary to complete the daily leg of competition. Teams will accumulate points at the end of each leg daily; by the final day of the race the first place team is determined by points accumulated during the five days of competition and will be awarded their Grand Prize.

The San Francisco Bay Area is home to some amazing architectural masterpieces. What better way to learn about these amazing structures than by touring, taking photographs, and drawing? Bring your sketchbooks, cameras, and iPads along as we visit locations in San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley and Marin. Activities include visits to the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park, the Marin Civic Center, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland, and possibly a walk along the new Oakland Bay Bridge. Along the way we’ll grab lunch at a local hot spot. Each day we will visit a new neighborhood and enjoy the sights and sounds of each one. They will teach us about their work, give us tours of their labs and workplaces, and tell us how they made their dream of working in science a reality. Potential visits include: UC Berkeley, Stanford, Monterey Bay Aquarium, the biotech companies Genentech, Amgen, and BioRad, the Marine Mammal Center, Cal Academy of Science, San Francisco Bay Estuary Institute, and the San Francisco or Oakland Zoo. Driver Education & Training

Safest Way Driving School (Ms. Molinelli)

Cost: $425 (financial assistance available)

All-inclusive! Earn your required Driver Training Hours and your Driver Education together with one course and one payment. Students must be 15 ½ years of age by March 7. All students will be issued a “Student License” to allow them to concurrently do drivers training behind the wheel. The California State Law does not allow anyone to obtain his or her Learners Permit before the age of 15 and one half years of age. This course will take place on campus at Saint Mary’s. You will complete Drivers Education in this week from 8:00 am to 12 noon each day in class.

While you will begin your Driver Training hours this week, you may have more driving sessions outside of this specific week. As soon as you sign up and pay for this course, you will be able to call Safest Way and set up your three two hour driving sessions, having at least one (if not all 3) during Enrichment week. * Scholarship available; application is due by Tuesday, January 12 and is available outside Ms. Molinelli’s Office.

Exploring LA!

Spend the week exploring the City of Angels with the Los Angeles native Ms. Hubbell! We will tour the campuses of world-class universities including UCLA, USC, and Loyola Marymount University. We will immerse ourselves in LA culture across the city visiting Venice Beach, exploring historic downtown LA and Homeboy Industries, and taking in the sights at the breathtaking Getty Museum. Finally, we’ll end our trip by spending a day at Disneyland with the most famous celebrity of all, Mickey Mouse! Join us as we live it up in LA! NatureBridge in Olympic Park, Washington

This nationally recognized program of field science takes students to the heart of some of our nation’s favorite National Parks. The program began in Yosemite National Park and has spread nationally to provide student access and instruction in multiple locations. Students do not need to camp or cook in campsites as the program uses the park’s lodging in heated cabins and cafeteria system to feed and house participants during the six day sessions.

During Enrichment Week, students will explore NatureBridge’s campus on Lake Crescent.

This is a six-day, five-night program to the Olympic Peninsula of Washington. The environmental education available covers a range of habitats from the seashore and tide pool exploration to rain forest investigations to a variety of inland evergreen habitats and may even include snowshoeing up on Hurricane Ridge. The actual decisions about the areas to be visited will be made by the group as a whole once all the participants are known.

NatureBridge feeds and houses participants in their new facility, the historic Rosemary Inn on Lake Crescent. We will travel to the park from the Bay Area via a combination of methods: airplane to the Seattle-Tacoma Airport, van to the ferry, the ferry between Edmonds and Kingston, and a van again to the middle of the park.

Participants can come from any grade level and need no previous experience. Students must be willing to take part in all the group activities.

The cost of the trip includes all meals and transportation in the Northwest. Some additional money will be necessary for personal expenses. Clothing and equipment will be discussed in meetings prior to leaving.

You Know Nothing LUCIOUS LYON . . . Bay Area History

Did you know that one of the most notorious and dangerous gangsters of all time lived here in the Bay Area? That’s right, Al Capone (aka Scarface) lived on “The Rock” for four and a half years starting in 1934. Does learning about gangsters and other local history sound like an interesting class to you? Course will include trips to Angel Island, Alcatraz, a Black Panther Tour through Oakland, Rosie the Riveter museum, as well as other sites in the East Bay and San Francisco. Every day the students and adults learn, reflect, and pray about their experiences out in the desert or the border city. It is the goal of the program that the students develop an understanding of the immigration issue while they reflect and share their thoughts on their responsibility to serve and act justly. Immersion: El Salvador, Pilgrims for Peace

The El Salvador immersion trip takes students to the small, rural town of Guarjila, El Salvador. While there, students live with families of the Tamarindo Community. We live simply and spend our days in community: living, working, playing, praying, and learning with the young people of Guarjila and their families. We also visit important cultural and historic sites and see the natural beauty of this Central American country. You don't have to speak Spanish, but you will certainly learn and practice communicating while you're there. Expect to make lasting friendships, and to have your world view changed forever. Immersion: Haiti, Culture and Service

This trip to Haiti is designed to give the students a firsthand experience of the conditions in the poorest country of the Western Hemisphere. Students will be introduced to the history and culture, as well as the economic, political and spiritual aspects of Haiti. The students will also be given an opportunity to begin to establish relationships with the Haitian people including high school students. The group will stay at the Matthew 25 house, and directly engage in service projects in Port-Au-Prince. Enrollment is closed. Students applied for this immersion trip in September.

Immersion: Oki-Ni-Soo-Ka-Wa (Blackfeet Reservation, MT)

Sophomore students have the opportunity to travel to Browning, Montana to participate in a cultural immersion on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. While in Montana, students will work with elementary students at De La Salle Blackfeet School, and with the elders of the community. Participating students will prepare lessons for the school-age groups, which could include science, art, and/or history activities. As part of the immersion program, students will focus on four areas of personal development: faith, social justice, service, and reflection. To prepare for the immersion experience, students will study aspects of Blackfeet culture through readings, videos, and discussions. Upon return from the experience, there will be follow-up meetings to share the experience with the Saint Mary’s community. Students applied for this immersion trip in September.

Cuba

Project Number: 7241

Ms. Payne and Mr. Simril

Cost: $3,200

Cuba is an endlessly fascinating place! Cuban culture is a very diverse blend of African, South American, European and North American design reflecting the diverse demographic of the island. We will soak up this culture experiencing the rich food, art, music, dancing, island life, and engaging with Cuban students. We will take in the Art Deco architecture, which peeks between the crumbling mansions, and enjoy the art galleries that are filled with exciting contemporary Cuban art. We will delve into the countryside exploring urban farming, visit and learn about the Sierra del Rosario Biosphere Reserve, and appreciate the breathtaking beaches. Also, while in Cuba, we will learn about the rich history of the music of Cuba, including its instruments, performance and dance, which comprises a large set of unique traditions, influenced mostly by West African and European by taking salsa and drumming classes.

Lastly, we will spend time with Cuban students to learn about living in Cuba.

Hawaii

Come and join us in the tropical paradise of Waikiki Beach, Hawaii! This trip calls out to those fascinated by volcanoes, pineapple plantations, the history behind Pearl Harbor, and the multiple ethnicities that make up Hawaii.

We will take advantage of the area by exploring all it has to offer, including a college visit to a local university.

Students must be open-minded, willing to cooperate and share a hotel room, explore new things, including foods and adventure. Lots of walking is mandatory, so wear your good walking shoes.

We will spend 4 nights and 5 days uncovering the cultural aspects of our 50 th state, including, but not limited to: Diamond Head, the Iolani Palace, and attending an authentic luau.

Paris

Travel « en famille » to the City of Lights and learn first-hand why so many people love Paris. You’ll visit some of the world’s greatest (and some of its least known) museums. You’ll taste some of the finest food in the world (that isn’t from a fancy restaurant). You will see many of the usual tourist sites (what’s a visit to Paris without the Eiffel tower?) but also consider the everyday (what’s a French supermarket like?) and the often ignored (when was the last time you went down into a sewer?). We’ll walk the city, learning various neighborhoods, and also take a short trip to the countryside to visit Normandy and the D-Day beaches. Enrollment is closed. Pacific Northwest College Tour

Enjoy a week of exploring colleges in the Pacific Northwest. We will leave Berkeley on a Sunday afternoon and travel by car to Oregon for our first night and fly home from Washington on Friday. Along the way we will visit the following colleges (and maybe more!): Southern Oregon University, University of Oregon, Linfield College, Willamette University, University of Portland, University of Washington, University of Washington and University of Puget Sound. Take the opportunity to see if any of these colleges is a good fit for you!

Spain

Vamonos a Barcelona, Spain! Come and explore the art, architecture and food of Barcelona! Nestled between the sea and the mountains, Barcelona has become one of the most desired locations to travel to because of the rich culture and friendly people that seems to mesmerize all who are lucky enough to visit. As one of the oldest capitols in Europe, Barcelona will offer our students a unique perspective on history, language, culture and faith. SMCHS students will have the unique opportunity to link what they are experiencing in Spain to what they have learned in the classroom in Peralta Park. Through dancing the flamenco, praying in a monastery, tasting paella and analyzing Picasso’s work, our students will gain a different perspective of the world and their place in it. Join us on an adventure as we take a glimpse into a nation that has remained strong through time and has shaped not only the world, but who we are as well.

Washington D.C. and New York

Want to explore the center of the United States? Maybe the World? Are you thinking Washington D.C.? New York City?

How about both? Come explore the amazing attractions, monuments, museums and memorials of Washington D.C. as well as the sites, sounds and vibrancy of New York City. From the White House to Wall Street; from the Lincoln Memorial to Rockefeller Center; from the Smithsonian museums to the Stature of Liberty; from the U.S. Capitol to Times Square; from Ford’s Theater to the Apollo Theater, let’s see the two most revered cities in America together!

This week long trip spends 3 days in Washington D.C. and 3 days in NYC, walking, talking, watching, exploring, recording, researching, learning and most of all enjoying these two captivating destinations. Want fun? No problem!

This trip is designed for the young person who wants to travel, learn and laugh all at once. Enrollment is closed.

Yucatan – Mayan Empire

Long before Columbus sailed west under the flag of Spain, Maya established an extraordinary empire whose majestic ruins inspire awe today. This adventure will take us to four of the greatest Mayan sites of the Yucatan peninsula – Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Tulum, and Coba – where we will become archaeologists and historians, learning the cultural, religious, social, and military practices of this mysterious, wondrous empire. We will conclude or journey on the magnificent Caribbean coast.
