A HISTORICAL OVERVIE W OF SAINT MARTIN’S UNIVERSITY

W Established in 1895, Saint Martin’s University is a four-year, coeducational Catholic university located in Lacey, Washington. Saint Martin’s stands proudly rooted in its unique Benedictine heritage and is one of 13 Benedictine colleges and universities in the United States.

The Benedictine monks belong to the oldest monastic order in Western Civilization, with 1,500 years of tradition behind them. Over the centuries, their long record of scholarship and achievement have made the Benedictines well-suited to education. The monks of Saint Martin’s Abbey founded the institution and today remain actively engaged in the life of the campus.

Saint Martin’s began as a school educating boys and young men in college preparatory classes. College-level classes were added in 1900. During the Great Depression, the school closed its grammar school and developed its high school and college programs. In 1938, its four-year baccalaureate program was accredited, and two years later, its first graduates received their degrees.

After World War II, hundreds of veterans arrived at Saint Martin’s College and enrolled under the G.I. Bill.

To meet the needs of these students, Saint Martin’s augmented its liberal arts curriculum by adding programs in accounting, business and engineering.

In 1965, well ahead of many Catholic colleges in the United States, Saint Martin’s became coeducational.

In 1972, Saint Martin’s broadened its reach and began serving the needs of part-time adult students with the establishment of extension programs at nearby Fort Lewis Army Post and McChord Air Force Base, now known as Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The 1980s brought the addition of graduate courses and the creation of the Institute for Pacific Rim Studies, which has since evolved into the University’s Office of International Programs and Development.

In 2001, the O’Grady Library opened. Designed by world-renowned architect Michael Graves, the library has become a signature building on the campus. In 2005, Spangler Hall, a new residence hall named in honor of President Emeritus David R. Spangler, Ph.D., was completed. That same year, Saint Martin’s College officially became Saint Martin’s University to more accurately reflect the institution’s nature, better fulfill its mission, and recognize the wide variety of undergraduate and graduate programs available to students.

The years 2008 and 2009 brought many changes to the campus: the opening of the University’s fourth residence hall, Parsons Hall, named for long-time Saint Martin’s supporters Ken F. Sr. and Gale L. Parsons; the opening of Harned Hall honoring H.C. “Joe” Harned and which now houses classrooms, the Diversity and Equity Center and the Veterans Center; the dedication of a world-class track and field facility and the Jan Halliday ’89 Memorial Plaza; and the completion of the Charneski Recreation Center. In 2009, the University also welcomed its 10th president, Roy F. Heynderickx, Ph.D. In 2011, the name of the street guiding guests through Saint Martin’s main entrance was changed from 6th Avenue to “Abbey Way” — part of the transformation of the north campus that culminated in 2013 with the Fr. Alfred Hulscher, O.S.B. Courtyard renovation behind Old Main. Also in 2013, the new Fr. Richard Cebula, O.S.B. Hall, home of The Hal and Inge Marcus School of Engineering, opened and achieved Platinum LEED certification; it is currently the highest-rated LEED-certified educational building in the Western Hemisphere and third highest in the world. Adjacent to Cebula Hall is the new 17,000-square-foot industrial lab building, the Panowicz Foundry for Innovation and the E.L. Wiegand Laboratories, which was completed in 2016. May 2019, the University opened the Fr. Bede Ernsdorff, O.S.B. Center, a new 30,000-square-foot classroom and laboratory facility that houses the Fr. Placidus Reischman, O.S.B. Department of Natural Sciences. The new science building includes laboratories, classrooms, collaborative research spaces and offices. The Ernsdorff Center, Cebula Hall and the Panowicz Foundry for Innovation and the E.L. Wiegand Laboratories create a STEM complex at the core of the campus. Also in 2019, Saint Martin’s University, in recognition of its long history of supporting veterans and their families, received the distinction of being named the first Purple Heart University in the state of Washington. In 2020, Saint Martin’s opened the Bruno and Evelyne Betti Nursing Education Center in Old Main.

W Eliseo “EJ” Juarez ’08 Director of Equity and Environmental Justice Washington Department of Natural Resources Eliseo “EJ” Juárez ’08 is the director of equity and environmental justice for the Washington State Department of Natural Resources where he is leading the work to reimagine the cumulative impacts of climate change, forest management, watershed resilience, and policy on Washingtonians to build systems for a more equitable future. Previously, he was the public policy manager for the Group Health Foundation where he worked to accelerate efforts to improve health equity and advance community aspirations for a vibrant, healthy future. He managed the Foundation’s public affairs team of policy and government relations professionals and shaped the organization’s political activities, protocol, and endorsements. He has also served as the community partnerships and government relations manager for the Seattle Public Library. In this role he managed the agency’s intergovernmental affairs and served as co-chair for the agency’s Racial Equity Team. Before transitioning to public service, EJ served as the executive director at Amplify/ColorPAC (now Sage Leaders), an organization dedicated to recruiting, training, and electing people of color, LGBTQI+, and young people to public office. He served by gubernatorial appointment to the Commission for Hispanic Affairs and later the Commission on Judicial Conduct. Currently, he serves as first vice chair of the King County Citizen’s Election Oversight Committee and on the boards of the SEIU 775 Benefits Group and the Seattle Redistricting Commission. A graduate of Saint Martin’s University, he was the driving force behind the establishment of the Student Health Center and was later named Distinguished Alumnus in 2016. He earned a master’s degree from the University of Washington-Bothell, where he is a member of their Hall of Excellence.

2022 HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENTS

W Father James E. Lee Pastor, St. Michael’s Parish, Olympia Recipient, Doctors of humane arts, honor is causa Father Lee was ordained to the priesthood on May 17, 1975. He received a master of divinity and served as a missionary priest in Tanzania, East Africa from 1972 until 1982. In 1979, he received a master of science in pastoral counseling and spirituality from Loyola College in Baltimore, Maryland. Father Lee joined the formation Department of Maryknoll in 1982 until 1986. Before planning to return to Tanzania, he came to the Seattle archdiocese at the invitation of a priest friend to spend a year on sabbatical. He served as parochial Vicar at St. Francis of Assisi parish in Burien. During that time, he discerned that God was calling him to serve in the Northwest. In 1990, Archbishop Hunthausen assigned him as pastor to Assumption parish in Bellingham. In 1997, Archbishop Murphy assigned him as pastor of Saint Michael Parish, Olympia. He was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in November 2017. He continues his ministry in face of the ongoing muscular degeneration and deterioration of his physical abilities. Father Lee has held a number of positions in the archdiocese and has been on the board of Pope John Paul II high school. He values the importance of the interplay of faith, reason, service and community in the formation of a lively and robust Catholic faith. Father Lee is deeply honored to be awarded this honorary doctorate.

Sister Angela Hoffman, O.S.B. ’72, Ph.D. Professor of Chemistry, University of Portland Recipient, Doctors of humane arts, honor is causa Sister Angela Hoffman is a proud member of the Benedictine Sisters at St. Placid Priory. She grew up within earshot of the Abbey Angelus bells. As a first-generation student, she earned a bachelor of science in education at Saint Martin’s in 1971. After teaching elementary through high school in Tacoma and Lacey, she spent four years at the Pacific Science Center. Upon returning to Tacoma, she earned a medication-assisted treatment (MAT) degree and a bachelor of science degree in biology at Pacific Lutheran University. She also taught teacher education courses and organic chemistry at Saint Martin’s while earning her degrees. She earned her Ph.D. in biochemistry from the Oregon Health Sciences University and has taught chemistry courses at the University of Portland since 1988. She has served in various leadership positions with the American Chemical Society (ACS), the Oregon Academy of Science (OAS), and the University of Portland (UP). Mentoring students in STEM is an important part of her career, including 290 undergraduate students, 60 high school Saturday Academy and Project SEED students, and 7 Murdock Partners in Science high school teachers. Some awards include election as a Fellow of both American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and of ACS, the James Culligan Award by UP, the Award for Outstanding Teacher in Science and Mathematics in Higher Education (OAS), and the Distinguished Alumni Award from Saint Martin’s. Sister and her undergraduate research students are finding small organic molecules with biological activity that have not been described yet. Their focus is on the discovery of natural compounds made by plants, soil bacteria, and fungi from inside healthy plant cells.

Current projects include the search for antibiotics made by bacteria (actinomycetes) from soil found in or near 2000-year-old graves at a Roman-era village on the Balearic Island of Mallorca. They also study compounds made by plants for drug leads, natural herbicides, and natural pesticides which have led to several patents, publications, and hundreds of conference presentations.

W Kathleen M. Heynderickx Recipient, Doctors of humane arts, honor is causa Growing up in Portland, Oregon, Kathleen Heynderickx (née Philip) was the second eldest of seven children. Since childhood, she had a great love for both art and gardening, believing that “gardening is art”. A perennial student, she pursued these interests at three different schools. After high school, she attended Mount Hood Community College where she took jewelry and oil planting classes. She later enrolled at Portland Community College where she majored in commercial art. She then returned to college as an adult student, attending Clackamas Community College to take courses in horticulture.

Kathleen also worked at Ferguson’s Fragrant Nursery, a well-loved family-owned nursery in Oregon that specialized in fragrant plants. She stayed connected with the nursery, even after she moved to Washington state with her family, returning often to assist with garden shows and holidays such as Mother’s Day. Kathleen moved with her husband, Dr. Roy Heynderickx, to Olympia, Washington in 2009, when he became the tenth president of Saint Martin’s University. Since joining the Saint Martin’s family, Kathleen has been the embodiment of Benedictine hospitality and respect for others. Kathleen made it her mission early on to be visible to and as involved with the students as possible. She wanted them to know they should be seen as individuals, each on their own journey at Saint Martin’s. With her welcoming nature, she would meet up with students, joining them for walks, playing disc golf, or riding her longboard with them around campus. She and Dr. Stephen Parker co-captained an intramural volleyball team called “Smackulty” for five years. She and Dr. Heynderickx often hosted students at their house for dinner and valued hearing their experiences and their aspirations.

One of her favorite activities in recent years has been volunteering at Our Common Home Farms, a community farming program launched by Saint Martin’s University in collaboration with Pope John Paul II High School and several community partners. She loves the mission around growing sustainable, ethically produced crops to provide nutritious food for families in need. Working on the farm has allowed her to combine her lifelong love of gardening with her commitment to service and helping others.

She and Dr. Heynderickx have three children and four grandchildren, who all reside in Oregon.

W Mariah Fuller Valedictorian Valedictorian Mariah Fuller is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Fuller earned a cumulative grade point average of 4.0. Fuller grew up in Hoquiam, WA where she attended the Hoquiam School District. It was during her time as a student there when she developed a passion for helping others. At Saint Martin’s she participated in the music department’s wind ensemble, pep band, and jazz band. In May 2021, she was inducted into the honor society, Phi Kappa Phi. She is also a first-generation college student and will be the first in her family to earn a college degree. She would like to thank her parents, brother, fiancé, family, and friends for supporting her in her success as a first-generation college graduate. After graduation, she plans on dedicating her time to impacting the lives of children as a teacher.

Donald Seese Salutatorian Salutatorian Donald Seese of Lacey, WA is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in social work. He earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.99. After graduation, he will attend graduate school in the fall at Columbia University where he was accepted into the school of social work. After serving in the military for thirteen years, Seese decided to return to school and chose to continue his education at Saint Martin’s. In 2021, he was inducted into the SALUTE Veterans National Honor Society where he was recognized for his service and scholastic achievements. Then in February, he was awarded by his peers as a military-affiliated student for leadership and mentoring at the veteran’s awards banquet on our main campus. He was also most recently inducted into the honor society, Phi Kappa Phi.

Society of Scholars— The Society of Scholars is the University’s honor society. It was founded in 1971 to distinguish members of the student body and faculty who, by their outstanding work in teaching and learning, contribute to the intellectual life of the University. Students who are nominated for the Society are inducted once specific criteria established by the Society are met. These students wear the medallion of the Society with their academic garb.

ORIGINS AND SIGNIFICANCE OF ACADEMIC REGALIA

W The origins of academic dress date back to the 12th and 13th centuries, when universities were taking form. Long gowns were worn and may have been necessary for warmth in unheated buildings. Hoods seem to have served to cover the tonsured head until superseded for that purpose by the skull cap.

In the days of Henry VIII of England, Oxford and Cambridge first began prescribing a definite academic dress and made it a matter of university control even to the extent of its minor details. The assignment of colors to signify certain faculties was a much later development, and one which was standardized in the United States only in the late 19th century. White taken from the white fur trimming of the Oxford and Cambridge B.A. hoods was assigned to arts and letters. Red, one of the traditional colors of the Church, went to theology. Green, the color of medieval herbs, was adopted for medicine, and olive, because it was so close to green, was given to pharmacy. Golden yellow, standing for the wealth which scientific research had produced, was assigned to the sciences.

In 1893, an Intercollegiate Commission made up of representatives of leading institutions gathered to establish a suitable system of academic apparel. In 1932, the American Council on Education authorized the appointment of a committee “to determine whether revision and completion of the academic code adopted by the conference of the colleges and universities in 1895 is desirable at this time, and, if so, to draft a revised code and present a plan for submitting the code to the consideration of the institutional members of the Council. Master’s hoods are trimmed in specific colors for each discipline. Master of Business Administration candidates receive hoods trimmed in drab; Master of Civil Engineering, Master of Engineering Management, and Master of Mechanical Engineering candidates receive orange trimmed hoods; Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology candidates receive citron trimmed hoods; Master of Education and Master in Teaching candidates receive hoods trimmed in light blue. The committee reviewed the situation through correspondence and conference and approved a code for academic costumes that has been in effect since that year.

A Committee on Academic Costumes and Ceremonies, appointed by the American Council on Education in 1959, again reviewed the costume code and made several changes. In 1986, the committee updated the code and added a sentence clarifying the use of the color dark blue for the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree.

European institutions continue to have a greater diversity in their specifications of academic dress than is seen in this country.

Gowns The gown for the bachelor’s degree has pointed sleeves. It is designed to be worn closed. The gown for the master’s degree has an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist, like the others. The sleeve base hangs down in the traditional manner. The rear part of its oblong shape is square cut, and the front part has an arc cut away. The gown is so designed and supplied with fasteners that it may be worn open or closed. The gown for the doctoral degree has bell-shaped sleeves. It is so designed and supplied with fasteners that it may be worn open or closed.

Hoods The length of the hood worn for the master’s degree must be three and one-half feet and for the doctoral degree, four feet. The hood worn for the doctoral degree only has panels at the sides. The hoods are lined with the official color or colors of the college or university conferring the degree.

Caps Mortarboards are generally recommended. A long tassel is fastened to the middle point of the top of the cap only and lies as it will thereon. The tassel is black or the color appropriate to the subject, with the exception of the doctoral cap, which may have a tassel of gold.

The Latin phrase translates as “cross of [our] Holy Father Benedict” and an image of the Benedictine cross forms part of the seal’s design. Mount Rainer, visible from the Saint Martin’s University hilltop on a clear day, is combined with images of Puget Sound and the fir trees that abound on the campus.
