Together as a community, we will get through this challenging time

W

e are sending this Annual Report of 2018-19 during unprecedented times. At the time of this writing, we as a university, a country and a world, are facing extraordinary challenges brought on by the COVID-19 Coronavirus outbreak.

In times of great uncertainty, it is important to reflect on past success to help determine our path forward.

For 125 years, Saint Martin’s has persevered, turning to our Benedictine values of listening, moderation, peace and stewardship to find strength. In many ways, 2018-19 saw some amazing milestones: national recognitions, record enrollment numbers, new academic programs, a new science building, and the highest fundraising in our 125-year history.

As we look to next year, we know two things will remain constant. First, the value of a Saint Martin’s degree will never be greater. Second, our students’ needs will also never be greater.

Those of us of a certain age, myself included, are doing a lot of reflection during this crisis and thinking a great deal about our estate plans. Keep Saint Martin’s in mind: your investment will leave positive, longlasting impacts for future Saints and in turn the greater community.

We have much to be thankful for, especially our donors and supporters. You have helped us garner these achievements recorded in this issue. Together we will get through this challenging time! Thank you for your continued support. I trust and pray you are safe.

The following numbers reflect Saint Martin’s total Contributions for this fiscal year as well as the five most recent fiscal year results on Endowment and Institutional Aid. The fiscal year runs July 1 – June 30 of each year.

Contributions

Contributions consist of all private gifts and grants made to Saint Martin’s University from individuals, foundations and corporations. Gifts are both unrestricted and restricted for purposes such as scholarships, academic programs and capital projects.

Endowment

An endowment is a donation that is made to Saint Martin’s on the condition that it is used to advance the mission of the school for the long term. Most endowments are designed to provide a permanent source of income for the University by keeping the original amount invested and using the accrued income from dividends for its charitable purpose, such as a scholarship. Saint Martin’s endowment has grown due to the generosity of donors through outright gifts, bequests and other planned gifts, as well as investment earnings.

Institutional Aid

Part of a student’s overall financial aid package, institutional aid represents the grants and scholarships which Saint Martin’s itself offers prospective and returning students. It does not include federal or state grants, loans, or outside scholarships or work study.

n Nov. 4, during Saint Martin's fourteenth Gala, more than 600 friends and alumni helped raise $1.4 million for student scholarships. Our celebrity guest chef was Carla Hall, co-host of ABC’s award-winning series “The Chew." Hall first won over audiences when she competed on Bravo’s “Top Chef” and “Top Chef: All Stars." Born in Nashville, she grew up surrounded by soul food. A graduate of Howard University's Business School, Hall worked as an accountant before switching careers to become a runway model. Traveling through Europe, she realized her true passion for food. She became a trained chef, working in several restaurants in the Washington, D.C. area. Today, Hall believes food connects us all, and she strives to communicate this through her work, her cooking, and in her daily interactions with others.

As in years past, Saint Martin’s students played a major role in the event. At the 2019 Gala In 2019, alumnus Ahmadou Seck '11delivered a message of appreciation for the financial support Saint Martin's students receive. Touched by his story, gala attendees contributed nearly $645,000 for the University's "Feed-a-Mind" scholarship program.

In 2020, Saint Martin’s University celebrates 125 years as an institution of higher learning, committed to empowering students to make a positive difference in their lives and in the lives of others. 1893 The site of the University and that of its founder, Saint Martin’s Abbey, is selected by Abbot Bernard Locnikar, O.S.B., of Minnesota's Saint John's Abbey, Saint Martin's Abbey’s mother house.

1895 Work begins on Saint Martin’s first building in January, and a four-story structure housing both the school and a monastery are completed by late summer. Saint Martin's opens its doors Sept. 11, 1895 for a single student, Angus McDonald, who reportedly traveled by canoe from Shelton, some 25 miles away.

1897 29 grammar and high school students are now attending Saint Martin's.

2016–First Division II Championship 1965 – College enrolls women

2000's 1918 – Sacred Heart of Jesus install

1900's 1905: The College employed its first lay teacher, Mr. Charles Hoffman.

1918: The eight-foot memorial statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in front of Old Main is donated by the men participating in Saint Martin's first Laymen's Retreat (popular spiritual exercises held in Lacey every summer until 1956).

1919: On Oct. 6, a tragic fire destroys the new gymnasium that was built in 1910.

1921: Father Sebastian Ruth, O.S.B.'s "hobby" radio station develops into a part-time, licensed broadcasting station and is assigned the call letters KGY. 1938: Saint Martin's becomes a four-year, accredited, baccalaureategranting institution.

1940: Saint Martin’s first graduates receive degrees.

1945: During WWII the College holds its 50th Commencement on June 8 with three College and 16 High School graduates.

1965: In September, a public announcement is made that the College will enroll women in all of its programs. Father Michael Feeney, O.S.B quickly begins a search for a dean of women. Mrs. (soon to become Dr.) Elda Brophy is selected for this position.

1966: Burton Hall residence center is erected near the popular Baran Hall, housing up to 184 students.

2001: O’Grady Library opens, providing students with much-needed resources.

1968: Capital Pavilion, a long-awaited health and physical education building is completed.

2005: Spangler Hall, a new residence hall named in honor of President Emeritus David R. Spangler, Ph.D., is completed. Dr. Spangler served as President from 1984-2005.

1970: The Abbey Church is completed.

1974: Saint Martin’s High School is closed due to declining enrollment.

1980: The monks of Saint Martin's Abbey elect Father Adrian, O.S.B. to be their sixth abbot.

1980-1984: Dr. John Ishii serves as president of the University, becoming the first layperson to lead the Benedictine College in the school's eighty-five year history.

1985: The Saint Martin's Athletic Foundation is established "to encourage and enhance the quality" of Saint Martin's intercollegiate and intramural athletic programs.

1986: Saint Martin’s adds graduate programs in education, engineering and counseling psychology to its growing list of areas of study.

1998-1999: Saints athletics play first season in NCAA Division II. 1992: On Aug. 6, the dedication of the renovated Saint Martin's Pavilion and the adjacent Norman Worthington Conference Center is held.

1993: Abbot Neal Roth, O.S.B. is elected Saint Martin's eighth abbot on May 28.

1998: Kreielsheimer Hall, the new arts education building, is constructed.

2008: Opening of the University’s fourth residence hall, Parsons Hall. The opening of Harned Hall, a state-of-theart academic building, honoring H.C. “Joe” Harned.

2009: The University welcomes its 10th president, Roy F. Heynderickx, Ph.D., and the Charneski Recreation Center and new track and field facility opens.

2011: Saint Martin’s entrance off of 6th Avenue is changed to “Abbey Way”.

2013: The renovation is completed in the Father Alfred Hulscher, O.S.B. Courtyard behind Old Main. The new Father Richard Cebula, O.S.B. Hall, home of The Hal and Inge Marcus School of Engineering, opens and achieves Platinum LEED certification.

2016: Construction of the Panowicz Foundry for Innovation and E.L. Wiegand Laboratories is completed.

2016: Mikel Smith '17 becomes Saint Martin's First Division II National Champion in the high jump.

2019: The University opens the Father Bede Ernsdorff, O.S.B. Hall and Father Placidus Reischman, O.S.B. Department of Natural Sciences. The new science and math building includes laboratories, classrooms, collaborative research spaces and offices.

WHAT WILL YOU BUILD? by Joseph Anderson Director of the Lacey MakerSpace

aint Martin’s University is one of the three founders of the Lacey MakerSpace, along with the City of Lacey and the Thurston Economic Development Council. With the stated purpose of being a catalyst for economic development in the community by providing public access to fabrication tools and instruction, MakerSpace opened in October 2019. Thanks to the assistance of Saint Martin’s administration and staff, more than 300 community members packed in on a Wednesday evening to tour the MakerSpace and see the amazing creations of local makers.

Students can take classes at the MakerSpace to learn high tech fabrication tools, like laser cutting and 3D printing. They can then use those newfound skills to create projects that add value to the campus and serve fellow students. Inventive students are realizing their creative ambitions and working on potential new products to bring to market. And skilled engineering students are assisting community members in the designing and fabrication of new products.

Saint Martin's faculty and staff have been instrumental in the development of the MakerSpace. The Institutional Advancement team at Saint Martin’s have been key in raising community funding to launch the MakerSpace and are committed to ongoing support. Members of the engineering and business departments sit on the MakerSpace's Executive Committee that provide guidance and policy, assuring that we meet the needs of the students and broader community. And being located in the center of Lacey here on Saint Martin's campus means easy access for both students and public.

The collaboration between Saint Martin’s University and the Lacey MakerSpace continues to be of enormous value to both the students and the community.

Countless students impacted

Saint Martin's University celebrated 3.21GIVE, the University's annual, online day of giving, on Saturday, March 21. With the COVID-19 pandemic, we have received more urgent needs from members of the Saint Martin's community. Thanks to the overwhelming and generous support of our community, more than $32,000 was raised of that total to support the rising emergency needs through the Saints Emergency Fund.
