Art in the Nave presents:

ICONS IN TRANSFORMATION August 13—October 12 Cathedral Nave Imagine our nave transformed by icons.

Imagine art inspired by the emotional power and artistry of icons.

Critics around the world are praising this dramatic 120 piece traveling exhibit of the contemporary work of acclaimed Russian—Swedish abstract expressionist, Ludmila Pawlowska. Also included in the installation will be Russian traditional icons from the Vassilevsky Monastery/Suzdal. After touring the great cathedrals of Europe, this must-see exhibit is now at Saint Mark’s. The works on view will also include 12 large sculptural pieces many of which will be suspended in the Cathedral providing a stunning and dramatic visual impression.

Gala Opening Saturday, August 13, 7:00 p.m.

Activities include speaker and artist, Ludmila Pawlowski, Russian folk-art group Juliana and PAVA, a festive reception and guided tours. Tickets available at Brown Paper Tickets or at the door. Suggested donation $20.

The Gratitude Gatherings project is not over yet—we run through mid August! Spaces are still available, especially for family-friendly events. Kids—and kids at heart—are invited to run in the park, or make ice cream sundaes. Eastsiders are invited to Kelsey Creek Farm Park, or an afternoon in Maple Valley. This is our third summer of parties in parks and parishioners’ homes for fellowship and fun. Join us!

Tour Guide training! Have you been around the Cathedral for more years than you'd like to count? We need your expertise to help provide Tours of the Cathedral to newcomers and guests. We currently offer Tours on the first Sunday of the month after the 11:00 am service, but are in need of additional tour guides. Summer Sunday School June 26 – August 21 (excluding Aug. 7). This summer our multi-generational group will be taking a playful, hands-on look at the sacraments of communion and baptism, and wondering together how to turn “wine into water” to raise money (along with the rest of the Saint Mark’s Community) to build wells in needy communities around the world (taking a good look at water issues along the way!) Please plan to join us as often as you’re available this summer to build community, learn together and have fun on summer Sunday mornings.

The Vestry Corner The Vestry continues its work this summer on Tuesday, August 23. Meetings are held in the Council Room at Diocesan House (1551 10th Ave E– 3 doors north of the Cathedral) and are open to all members of the Cathedral.

We gather at the Cathedral at 7:00 pm on the noted dates, make a dinner plan (usually on Broadway; always within walking distance), eat together, come back to the Cathedral for games on the lawn, and attend Compline together, ending at 10:00 p.m. The last date for this summer is August 21.

6 - 9 pm From Hiroshima to Hope northwest shore of Green Lake, just south of the Bathhouse Theatre, 7312 West Green Lake Dr. N., Seattle. The lantern-floating peace ceremony, now in its 26th year at Green Lake, honors the victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and all victims of war and violence. Pre-event activities include lantern calligraphy and folding of peace cranes. At 7 p.m., a program of musical performances and speakers. The candle-lit lanterns are then floated on the lake at dusk.

From Hiroshima to Hope is created annually by local peace, faith and community organizations. Sponsors include Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience, Peace Action of Washington, the United Nations Association-WA Chapter, and Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility. Fast for Peace The Mideast Focus Ministry together with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community invite Jews, Christians and Muslims to Fast for Peace on Sunday, August 7. During Ramadan join Jews, Christians, and Muslims in a day of fasting for Peace and Understanding. Fasting is common to all religions. It teaches, through personal experience, what hunger, poverty, loneliness and discomfort mean to the less fortunate sections of society. After a day of fasting and reflection, please join us for a short program of reflections followed by dinner (breaking of the fast). Dinner will be served at 8:35 pm (sunset). A scripture exhibition will also be open for visitors. This is a unique opportunity to share with other faith traditions in those places where our rituals differ but their purposes are much the same.

We will also kick-off the Saint Mark's Microfinance initiative as part of the Church in the World Ministry within Saint Mark's. Education for Ministry—daytime series starting in Fall 2011 A new Education for Minstry group offered during daytime hours at Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Mercer Island. Currently suggesting either Tuesdays or Thursdays at, 11 am—2 pm, depending on availability of participants. Education for Ministry is a four year curriculum from the Episcopal Seminary at Sewanee TN. Each year is a contained unit and can be taken individually (in sequence), or over the full 4 years.
