2019 continues to be an outstanding year for the Science Center. We’ve seen hundreds of thousands of people who’ve come to learn, explore and have fun. POMPEII: THE EXHIBITION has been extremely popular and well received, and we encourage you to visit or revisit before it closes on November 3. This is truly an amazing exhibition with so much to see and experience.

In late November, we will reopen the OMNIMAX® Theater after closing for the largest renovation since its construction in 1991. We are thrilled to introduce IMAX® with Laser, a NanoSeam™ screen, new seating, a wider variety of accessibility options and more. We will open with the IMAX film Great Bear Rainforest, which takes viewers to one of the wildest places left on earth, a land of grizzlies, coastal waves, sea otters and the rare all-white spirit bear, as well as the highly anticipated feature-length film Frozen 2. In addition, we will bring back Volcanoes: The Fires of Creation and launch Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in December. More details about this exciting update are included later in this issue.

This summer was also busy for the participants in our Youth Exploring Science (YES) program. In July they had the opportunity to practice their networking skills with dozens of local professionals at our annual networking event. They were also able to extend the Science Center and its mission outside the walls of the building through a number of initiatives. Throughout the summer, teens visited various locations in the St. Louis area as part of “Pop-Up Science.” They went to local parks, community centers, summer camps and hospitals to bring free, hands-on science activities to people of all ages. Also, the YES media production team kicked off a fun video series called “Science Savvy,” with the teens quizzing the public on their knowledge of science in a “man-onthe-street” style interview. These efforts bring science to the community and encourage people to come to the Science Center to explore topics ranging from volcanoes to astronomy and more.

You will have the opportunity to support YES and other Science Center programs soon through Giving Tuesday. This annual day takes place the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and wraps up the traditional retail shopping days with a focus on giving to local nonprofit organizations. This year’s event falls on December 3 and is a wonderful chance to ensure we can keep growing STEM education programs that help to “ignite and sustain lifelong science and technology learning.”

Did you know that many of the Roman gods were “adopted” from Greece?

Aphrodite would have been named Venus in the Roman pantheon; however, the Greeks had settled much of Italy before Rome rose to power and left behind much of their culture.

POMPEII: THE EXHIBITION VIP RECEPTION In May, the Saint Louis Science Center celebrated the opening of POMPEII: THE EXHIBITION with a VIP reception.

Science Center supporters and guests enjoyed an evening of cocktails and hors d’oeuvres and the opportunity to travel back in time to Pompeii in 79 A.D. at the special exhibition.

So much water flowing through the aqueducts created a craze for extravagant fountains. These stunning bronze animals contain pipes and were a portion of a larger fountain display.

NEW EXHIBITS

NOW THRU JANUARY 2020

A New Moon Rises From the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum Brad Jolliff, Science Center member and professor at Washington University, recommends three of his favorites from the compelling collection of over 60 breathtaking images captured by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera.

Dr. Jolliff is the Scott Rudolph Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Washington University. He is a member of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) science team and is involved in numerous science and exploration projects related to the moon. Dr. Jolliff has been an on-going advisor to the Science Center helping to ensure that exhibit content is both current and accurate.

“As a member of the LROC science team, I am delighted that the Science Center is hosting the exhibit A New Moon Rises. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is celebrating its 10th anniversary this summer, and the exhibit includes a beautiful subset of the many thousands of images of our moon that show it to be a dynamic and geologically wondrous place,” says Dr. Jolliff.

To show off the high quality and phenomenal resolution of the images, some cover entire walls in the gallery. Along with the exhibit, the Science Center is also featuring the Command and Lunar Modules and Lunar Lander games created for Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission and space-inspired artifacts.

The Saint Louis Science Center is proud to be the only Smithsonian Affiliate in the St. Louis region. This status has allowed us to host Smithsonian traveling exhibitions like A New Moon Rises and last year’s Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission

Deepest Spot on the Moon. This image shows an oblique view inside Antoniadi crater, which is located on the moon’s southern farside, inside the South Pole-Aitken basin. What is interesting about this image is that Antoniadi contains another smaller, bowl-shaped crater whose floor holds the deepest spot on the moon. In the background of the image you can see a cliff, the rim of Antoniadi crater, about 4000m tall. So this image shows a small impact crater within a large impact crater within a giant impact basin; no wonder it’s the deepest spot on the moon!

Apollo 12 Landing Site. In this image is the landing stage of the Apollo 12 Lunar Module, Intrepid (upper center-right), and the path made by the astronauts. On the right side is the Surveyor 3 spacecraft, which landed there two years before Apollo 12.

Demonstrating the pinpoint landing was an important objective of the mission. Another objective was to sample material tossed to the site by Copernicus crater, several hundred km to the north. From those samples, the age of Copernicus crater was determined and is one of the most important for defining the timescales for planets in the Solar System.

Ina D, Recent Volcanism? This oblique view is of a very unusual volcanic feature called Ina D because of its “D” shape. It lies at the top of a broad, low volcano and consists of smooth pancake-like blobs of basaltic material erupted onto what appears to be a rough, depressed surface some 1800m across.

The sharp edges of the blobs and the fact that they have very few small impact craters on them suggests that they could be geologically very young, perhaps having erupted in the past 10 to 100 million years. That would make this feature and others like it the youngest volcanics on the moon. I love that these features are a mystery, and it is up to the next generation of lunar explorers to go back there and discover the answer.

Explore our solar system and beyond Packed with hands-on exhibits and dazzling imagery, Sun, Earth, Universe is the result of a collaboration between NASA and the National Informal STEM Education (NISE) Network.

The Saint Louis Science Center is one of 52 institutions nationwide to receive this exhibit that connects visitors with current NASA science research and launches them on a journey to explore the universe.

“We are honored to be among the institutions selected to feature this new exhibition,” says Paul Freiling, the Science Center’s director of Emerging Technology. “It brings our visitors unique ways to experience the interconnected nature of our earth to the sun and universe.”

James S. McDonnell Planetarium Your gateway to the stars!

This summer brought new leadership with the arrival of Planetarium Manager Will Snyder from North Carolina. As former director of the Lynn Planetarium and the Ingram Planetarium, Will brings a wealth of experience in the field and, most importantly, a passion for sharing the extraordinary wonders of the universe with visitors to our world-class attraction.

“When you first see the iconic building rise above the trees in Forest Park, you realize you are visiting something special,” says Snyder.

“Some may not know just how unique it is.”

The McDonnell Planetarium is the second largest planetarium in the western hemisphere and home of the state-of-the-art Zeiss star projector – the most realistic star projector available in the world. Every show is presented live by our outstanding team of expert educators dedicated to taking the visitors on unforgettable journeys through the cosmos. According to Will, “The McDonnell Planetarium is a truly remarkable connection to the night sky, and we cannot wait to bring more out-of-this-world experiences to our visitors.”

Throughout the fall, popular Live Sky shows will include interesting tie-ins to POMPEII: THE EXHIBITION, providing a fresh twist on our favorite live programs, and for our youngest astronomers, the new Campfire Star Stories show is guaranteed to provide a unique experience as you crowd around campfires under the planetarium’s domed sky. Energy Stage We have live fun down to a science!

The Energy Stage reopened earlier this summer bringing visitors a completely revitalized space dedicated to showcasing innovative STEM performance programming for all ages. Our Energy Stage educators use fire, electricity and so much more during their live STEM performances that ignite, nurture and inspire audience curiosity.

In addition to this new space the Energy Stage team also welcomed a new manager, John Nahon. He is returning to the Saint Louis Science Center from the Denver Zoo where he worked as a Youth Program Specialist. He previously worked at the Science Center as an educator at the Stage and is “thrilled to be coming back to the Science Center!”

“I love making STEM accessible to all audiences and look forward to working with the Energy Stage team to do just that,” says Nahon.

“The magical combination of science demonstrations, engaging theater and interactive entertainment creates the perfect centerpiece for the daily visitor experience at the Science Center,” says Elisabeth Senzee, associate director of gallery programs and stage project manager. “It is the ideal arena for our audiences to look at STEM in a new way.”

The new Energy Stage team will continue to debut new offerings that will coordinate with future special exhibitions and OMNIMAX® Theater films.

St. Louis Children’s Hospital Partners With Science Center’s Family Med School St. Louis Children’s Hospital will bring their expertise in serving the unique health needs of young people, from newborns to adolescents, to Saint Louis Science Center’s Family Med School classes. The partnership brings families a new opportunity to discover a full range of medical topics from the heart to physical therapy for young athletes through hands-on activities.

NEW STEM Professional Development Workshops Designed for busy educators, the new STEM training will bring tools and processes to transform classrooms into innovative, engaging STEM environments. Our education team will guide teachers through the instructional strategies and practices that will support Next Generation Science Standards.

In late June, GROW educators invited local teachers to the first delivery of Dig Into STEM: Unearth Soil Ecosystems Professional Development Workshop. Eighteen educators from Missouri and Illinois participated in STEM soil health activities found in the Science Center’s Soil Your Underwear Challenge kits. The program included a free kit for each educator to use in their classrooms!

“The workshop was one of the best I have been to in my teaching career,” says Theresa Fehrenz of Columbia Middle School. “The small size of the group and the knowledge and approachability of the presenters was incredible.”

The Science Center’s Teacher Programs team is planning to offer at least two Professional Development Workshops every semester. “We are excited to provide educators valuable resources that could spark STEM learning for students throughout the community” says Jared Farmer, manager of Teacher Programs.

Science Center to host Navy Week activities The Saint Louis Science Center has been selected as an activity site for the Navy’s flagship outreach effort, Navy Week. St. Louis is one of 15 cities selected to host the program designed to build and strengthen ties to the community. Science Center’s Soil Your Underwear Challenge How healthy is your soil? The Science Center’s Soil Your Underwear Challenge will help you find out. The program features seven activities designed to gain a curiosity for life in the soils and lead to a deeper investigation of the biological activity in your soil.

The signature activity tests soil health by burying a perfectly clean pair of cotton undies. Dig up the underwear in 60 days, and if it is chewed up, threadbare or riddled with holes, your soil contains the essential microbes that help soil grow healthy crops.

“This is a really fun way to inspire a curiosity for hidden life in the soil,” says Maddie Earnest, manager of the GROW gallery. “From exposing hidden plants in soil to collecting arthropods, each activity is rooted in an engaging look-and-see format.”

The Science Center’s Soil Your Underwear Challenge has been made possible with funding from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The challenge was launched at the GROW gallery’s Urban Ag Day and since then has been presented at teacher professional development workshops and at a Science Center member event.

YES 9th Annual Networking Event In July, YES teens had the unique opportunity to practice communicating on a professional level and gather career advice from an outstanding group of supportive role models and mentors during the 9th annual Youth Exploring Science Networking Event.

The event was held at the McDonnell Planetarium and attracted over 70 business and community professionals dedicated to helping the teens understand the powerful benefits of networking. After a keynote speech by Dr. David Lenihan, co-founder and CEO of Tiber Health and President and CEO of Ponce Health Sciences University, the teens engaged in roundtable discussion sessions with professionals from across the St. Louis area.

This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event was moderated by retired journalist Bonita Cornute and included professionals from Bayer, the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Navy and ABNA Engineering. Teens had the opportunity to meet many career professionals including a reproductive biology scientist, dental hygienist, nuclear field coordinator and a microbiologist.

Saint Louis Science Centerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s YES Program works with underrepresented teens throughout their high school years to increase interest in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEaM). YES Teens also gain professional, academic, college-ready and real-world skills that assist in building self-confidence and personal success.

YES Teens Win Regional Entrepreneurship Competition Two YES teens, Maya McGregory and Nayla Nava, won first place at the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) Regional Youth Competition, which was held at the Science Center. The teens presented their business prototypes and pitch for Afrospanic Atmosphere, a fashion brand designed to empower people of color to pursue STEM careers. Maya and Nayla will represent the region at the NFTE National Competition this fall in New York City.

YES teens bring the Science Center to the community This summer, YES teens helped implement the Science Center’s Turning Outward initiative to reach portions of the community that may have barriers to visiting the Science Center. YES teens brought the Science Center to them!

#GIVING TUESDAY December 3, 2019

Integrative Medicine Component Teens in from the Integrative Medicine component supported the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Health Fair. The teens measured heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels and then discussed healthy ranges with active and retired IBEW members and their families.

Agriscience Component YES teens from the Agriscience component partnered with the Missouri Botanical Garden to bring children from community organizations to Litzsinger Road Ecology Center. For many of the children it was the first time to a natural site. YES teens helped them explore the woods, find fossils in the creek and more.

For the past two decades, the YES program has worked with underrepresented teens to prepare them for a changing world by teaching them STEAM skills that encourage innovation and enable them to adapt to advancements in science and technology.

YES teens from the Aerospace component engaged the community in Pop-Up Science activities at several local parks, summer camps and St. Louis Children’s Hospital. The events engaged more than 1000 people to learn more about aerospace through hands-on activities including flight simulators, drone demonstrations and pop rockets.

Teens in the YES Media Production component engaged with the community by creating short science related video interviews. The project, dubbed Science Savvy Series, was a fun opportunity for teens to reach out to the community and hone their media production skills. The street-style interview topics included space and volcanos.

For over 175 years Case IH has been a leader in agricultural equipment, and we are proud to have this global leader with operations in over 160 countries as a founding partner of the GROW gallery. CASE IH’s generous support has helped sustain the GROW gallery by showcasing the innovative science and technology behind today’s agricultural equipment.

“We are proud to provide visitors to GROW an up-close look at our CASE IH equipment and the opportunity to share the integral role it plays in the journey of food, fiber and fuel from farm to the rest of the world,” says CASE IH’s National Accounts Manager Detleff Ball.

The CASE IH combine has been a centerpiece of the GROW gallery attracting visitors to demonstrations of what this complex machine does and how it efficiently harvests mass quantities of grain. Visitors also get a chance to climb in the cab during the demonstrations. CASE IH continually updates combine models and training for the GROW staff to demonstrate the state-of-the-art technological features.

CASE IH also provides tractors for permanent display and pedal tractors for kids and adults to take a spin around a fun farm-inspired track. CASE IH’s Scout helps the GROW team with all the heavy lifting needed to maintain the one-acre site. Many of the seasonal GROW events are also generously supported by CASE IH.

Science Center awarded grants for STEM education programs

Southwest Airlines’ corporate giving program generously provided funding for the Science Center’s nationally recognized Youth Exploring Science (YES) program. Southwest’s gift has helped sustain the YES Aerospace component and also giving 30 teens the opportunity to take an awe-inspiring orientation flight in a two-seater aircraft, flying high above St. Louis.

GROW Volunteer & CASE IH Distributor Tom Stookey is an enthusiastic supporter of the GROW gallery and a founding partner. From the latest combines to a full range of tractors, Tom and his team at Mascoutah Equipment have been instrumental in delivering CASE IH farming equipment to the GROW gallery. Tom has supported multiple GROW events and even brought in a small fleet of tractors and drivers for farm-themed rides. He recently brought his support of the GROW gallery to a new level by becoming a volunteer. Tom can often be found demonstrating the many features of the CASE IH combine and how it is essential to the journey of food.

The Express Scripts Foundation awarded grant funding to the Science Center’s YES program’s Integrative Medicine and Well-Being component.

Express Scripts’ gift will support biological sciences and health programming and activities to support the teens’ interest in biology-related fields of study.

The Verizon Foundation, a supporter of STEM education for K-12 youth, awarded funding for a series of professional development workshops for area teachers. The free Curious Classroom workshops have provided effective tools and strategies for teaching STEM topics to young people.

Missouri Beef Industry Council Renews GROW Support The Missouri Beef Industry Council renewed its support of the GROW gallery at its board meeting in July. As a GROW founding partner, the council has been instrumental in bringing visitors to GROW the story of Missouri beef from pasture to plate. The renewed support will feature many updates throughout the GROW gallery including a video monitor with rotating content to be added to the Missouri Beef Industry Council’s corral and a 2D life-size cow photo opp.

The Missouri Beef Industry Council will sponsor and participate in the Science Center’s upcoming Great Outdoors and Health Expo SciFests.

Illinois Farm Bureau Makes Gift to GROW The Illinois Farm Bureau Board of Directors voted in July to continue to provide partnership support to the GROW gallery. Illinois Farm Bureau joined the Science Center’s GROW Advisory Board as a founding partner in 2016 and has supported fun and interactive ways for visitors to learn more about agriculture through exhibits and events.

GROW Rice Day Celebration

In July, Rice Day was celebrated in the GROW gallery in partnership with the Missouri Rice Research and Merchandising Council. Visitors heard from rice farmers and learned how rice is processed. Hands-on activities included tasting sessions that explored the science behind different rice grains and the ways different varieties are used. Visitors enjoyed crispy rice snacks to celebrate the fact that Missourigrown rice is often used to make rice cereals. A special thanks to all of our partners from the Missouri Rice Council who brought giveaways and made the GROW event possible.

Apollo 50th Anniversary Moon Landing Celebration On July 20, the Science Center attracted nearly 7,000 visitors to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing as an official NASA anchor site. Aeronautics and astronautics professionals, including moon landing experts, were on hand with special presentations about the effort involved in getting us to the moon and the future of space exploration. Hundreds of “Astronauts in Training” received space patches after completing training activities. Science Center members had the exclusive opportunity to hear from McDonnell Aircraft Corporation engineers that were behind the scenes of the United States’ first pursuit of space travel.
