Junior School Girls Learn to Tread Lightly
from Piper July 2023
Bugs, trash, and an energy generator that is bound to break a sweat were some of the not-so-usual topics the Junior School girls delved into during their Tread Lightly Caravan visit. It provided an exciting opportunity to learn about the environment and how to reduce their impact on it.
Students engaged in four interactive stations. The first stop was the mini rubbish tip, where they learned about landfills, recycling, and zero waste, discussing ways to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills. The last minutes of this station had students applying their new knowledge by distributing items from a bag of ‘trash’ into the correct coloured bins. Meanwhile, other students used a video microscope to get a closer look at nature, studying bees, pollinators, and flowers to understand the role they play in an ecosystem. The third activity involved students generating their own electricity using a power bike or hand generator, raising awareness about energy use and consumption in their daily lives. They couldn’t believe how difficult it was to get a non-eco lightbulb to light using only their arms! Lastly, students learned about the impact of stormwater on animals and organisms living in streams, with a focus on pollutants and litter.
The Tread Lightly Caravan’s mission is to inspire students to live more environmentally responsible lifestyles, showing them how their everyday choices can make a big difference to the natural environment. Its visit to Saint Kentigern Girls’ School is just one example of the impactful work they do in promoting sustainability and environmental awareness among young people.
