The end of the 2020-2021 school year was marked with tremendous joy and celebration. We share many of these moments with you in this issue of UPDATE, such as a successful in-person graduation, outstanding academic achievements of our Seniors who completed their Capstone presentations, a record-setting number of young women signing to play athletics in college or university, and other awards, recognitions and events. While the end of the school year can be exhausting, and certainly was this year after all that we had been through, it was truly a display and acknowledgement of the strengths and efforts of our amazing graduates throughout their time at the Academy.

Throughout the end of the year, there were a few poignant moments that have really resonated with me. First, I was so grateful to be present for the Capstone presentations of the Seniors completing the Health Sciences Honors Program and Engineering & Design Honors Program. Their presentation skills, insights and reflections about being in their respective programs were impressive. Although they missed out on some opportunities to engage with the community over the past year and a half, their teachers helped them design experiences to help them navigate their next steps as scholars. They are truly thoughtful and hardworking young women, and our future is in good hands with them.

Our beloved Class of 2021’s end of year events included many in-person traditions that reminded us of the joy of celebrating together as a community. At prom, the young women and their guests danced, laughed and talked throughout the evening. That was followed by a fun Senior Parade and picnic on the back lawn, where the students ate, sang, danced and enjoyed being together. They were able to experience the joyfulness of being connected at the end of this long year, and for that, I am immeasurably grateful.

As family, friends and classmates watched via a delayed livestream, the Class of 2021 celebrated their Tree Ceremony, Baccalaureate Mass, Alumnae Induction and Honors Convocation. We were so grateful that these events, which have become impactful traditions for alumnae of Saint Joseph Academy, were able to be held safely to celebrate and recognize the Seniors for their determination, resilience and positive attitude during a very unexpected year.

The evening of Commencement was remarkably beautiful. Walking down Rocky River Drive with the faculty, staff and Class of 2021 was both memorable and emotional for me.

We have been through a lot together, and again, I felt tremendous gratitude for the efforts of all. Cheering as the graduates walked through the honor guard created by faculty and staff was such a moment of joy and celebration. They deserved it - and so did we!

Finally, after the students left campus for summer and the faculty and staff gathered to celebrate our amazing retirees and those leaving for new adventures, I was literally struck at the faces before me, as It was the first time that I had seen many of my colleagues without a facial covering. I was so happy, as I realized that this was the first time the entire school year we were able to come together for an in-person celebration. I know that as we look to the 2021-2022 school year, the focus will be on the importance of connection and recognition of the strengths of our community. I cannot wait!

The summer has brought gatherings and events enabling me to meet and engage with the wonderful alumnae and friends of the Academy. I have been enjoying each and every opportunity. This summer, we had the chance to relaunch our With Lifted Hearts capital campaign, which was announced in February 2020, in order to support our young women with outstanding facilities. We have also found creative ways to bring incoming and prospective students to campus by hosting a Class of 2025 Summer Picnic, Tour and Treats for prospective students and by resuming our summer programming.

Wishing you and your family the joy and celebration that we experienced here at the Academy at the end of the long year. Hoping you and your family can experience the pleasure of reconnecting with family and friends after such a long year. Have a blessed summer!

Distinguished Honors Programs Graduates Complete Capstone Presentations

B

eyond everyday curriculum, Saint Joseph Academy students have the opportunity to participate in unique programs designed to prepare them for potential careers. Through the Health Sciences Honors Program and the Engineering & Design Honors Program, students participate in rigorous courses of study and meaningful experiential learning that begin in the classroom and extend into real life.

Through these Distinguished Programs, Seniors who completed their respective Pathways, presented their individual portfolios, including a summary of clinical hours.

Capstones, the final presentations, are a vital component of these programs, which strives to prepare young women for a life of compassionate leadership and service in healthcare or engineering and design professions.

participated in the Health Sciences Honors Program Purple Pathway and are prepared for an education that extends past college toward a doctoral degree. The Purple Pathway was completed by Sarah Harper, Maya Johnson, Alyssa Kiss-Benke (greatgranddaughter of Antoinette Jacko ’27†), Elizabeth Koeth and Kate Pofok.

Twelve students that participated in the Health Sciences Honors Program Gold Pathway also presented Capstones: Caroline Baker, Caitlin Barber, Grace Bilak, Ella Boyer (daughter of Rita Lisco Boyer ’90), Kathleen Crump, Sophia Dixon, Madelyn Hales, McKenna Hoefsmit (sister of Kiara Hoefsmit ’18), Meghan Laubert (sister of Katherine Laubert ’10), Olivia Leduc, Ellen Lloyd and Claudia Yuhasz.

Graduates of the Engineering & Design Honors Program presented Capstones to members of the Engineering & Design Honors Program Advisory Board and to members of the faculty, staff and administration. 24 students have graduated from the Engineering & Design Honors Program.

Service Projects Provide Many Gifts to the Cleveland Community

D

ue to the COVID-19 restrictions put in place by the State of Ohio, Academy students were not required to continue to perform their service hours. However, many of our young women used their time, talent and effort to volunteer for organizations that help others in Northeast Ohio. Below are a few examples of how students used their gifts to support their communities.

The National Art Honor Society’s annual Empty Bowls soup dinner benefitting the Greater Cleveland Food Bank (GCFB) was unable to be held in person this year. Art students created 36 handpainted bowls that were sold through a virtual auction. To date, the Empty Bowls event has funded 7,656 meals for individuals in Northeast Ohio.

In March, students came together for a service project benefitting the West Side Catholic Center’s Moriah House. The nonprofit accepts female veterans and families who are homeless or have resided in substandard living conditions. These families are challenged with issues of economic hardship, physical and emotional trauma, chemical dependency, mental illness, physical illness, lack of education or lack of employment. Members of the Class of 2022 (Mallory Palagyi, Ella Maher and Margaret Maline) led their peers in the creation of Easter baskets, designed to bring joy to those families.

“Our main thought about this service project was to provide a sense of normalcy and hope in the midst of this unprecedented time. We can’t imagine how much more challenging it is for those less fortunate than us to deal with the pandemic, so we found it incredibly important to give back. We especially wanted to give back to girls closer to our age, from ages 9-17, to reflect the generosity given by donors to us as high school students at Saint Joseph Academy and how much something so simple impacts our lives each day. Although this gift to them won’t impact them every day, it still is a way to show them that people care about them, and they deserve to enjoy the holiday despite whatever circumstances they are facing,” shared Mallory Palagyi ’22.

Five students were recognized by the United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA) and InnerView in the fourth Annual National Community Service Awards. This program, open to all U.S.

Students prepare Easter baskets for families at Moriah’s House

students, has been designed to connect student community service activities and commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to transform the world. The Kroger Co. is presenting the second annual Zero Hero Awards to students for taking action to help create communities free of hunger and waste.

“Youth efforts and voices are essential to achieve the SDGs. These awards allow us to share our appreciation for youth leaders who have invested talent and effort in the causes they care about,” says Rachel Bowen Pittman, Executive Director of United Nations Association of the USA. “With a decade remaining to deliver on the SDGs, we are thrilled that these students will be entering the workforce with meaningful community engagement skills and socially aware experiences. We are encouraged that educators are including community service and cultural engagement in the educational experience of their students.”

This school year was marked by thoughtful and selfless acts of service to the dear neighbor. We are inspired and encouraged by our young women who continue to live lives of unifying love and make sacrifices to help their neighbors and protect the most vulnerable.

Fine Arts Students Honored with Multiple Awards Congratulations to these three outstanding students for their recognitions and accomplishments in various fine arts competitions and exhibitions.

Eve Jursinski ’21 was nominated for “Best Actress” in Playhouse Square’s 2021 Dazzle Awards. The most talented high school performers in Northeast Ohio take center stage at Playhouse Square for the Dazzle Awards, which recognizes outstanding musical theater productions and student performances. Due to the global pandemic, the Dazzle Awards showcase was held virtually. The showcase highlighted the incredible talents of Northeast Ohio’s high school students and recognized the 2021 “Best Actor” and “Best Actress.” The “Best Actor” and “Best Actress” go on to represent Playhouse Square and Northeast Ohio at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, also known as the Jimmy Awards®, presented by the Broadway League. This is Eve’s second Dazzle Award nomination for “Best Actress.”

Grace Bilak ’21 was recognized as one of the Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition’s top 25 finalist for her series “Scandinavian Mythology (Series of 4)” created by using a mix of pens, pencils and markers. More than 6,000 pieces were entered into the show for regional judging. 15 percent were selected by Regional jurors to move on to State judging.

State jurors then selected 300 artworks for inclusion in the 2021 Exhibition. Grace, along with 24 other students throughout Ohio was honored with Top 25 Governor’s Award of Excellence by State jurors.

Emily Pavlick ’24 received third place at the English-Speaking Union Shakespeare Competition - Cleveland Branch. To prepare for the competition, participants study, memorize and act out a Shakespearean monologue and sonnet. Preparation includes studying iambic pentameter, diction and acting. Emily won the in-house Academy Shakespeare competition before advancing to the Regional competition.

PRINCIPAL’S CORNER: Celebrating the graduation of the Class of 2021 and the arrival of summer, our hearts have been filled with a mix of emotions: joy and relief but also uncertainty about the future. I have been reminded of the story from Luke’s Gospel about the risen Christ’s appearance to the disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24). Jesus appears to two of the disciples who had just heard news of the empty tomb but had yet to believe. At first, they couldn’t recognize Him, and it was only after He had broken bread with them and then “vanished from their sight” that they recognized the burning in their hearts brought by His enduring presence among them.

The global pandemic forced many changes in the life of our school, and we were presented with the opportunity to fulfill our mission in new ways, inspired by the Holy Spirit and echoing the prayer

of St. Francis: “It is in dying that we are born to eternal life.” In the tradition of the Congregation of St. Joseph, we recognize that in times of trouble, “we are an instrument of God’s dream” (Maxim 31).

I continue to be inspired by the example set by our students, especially our graduating Class of 2021. They’ve had a difficult road as so much of their high school experience has been defined by the twin crises of a global pandemic and a historically divisive political climate. At a time of transition in their lives, they haven’t had the anchoring comfort of a familiar school experience and yet they’ve responded with great leadership and courage. One of the joys of working in a school is the opportunity to witness the growth of our students, as they become who they are called to be and live the dreams God has for them. Imagining how these young women of unifying love will continue to carry forward the work of the Congregation warms all of our hearts.

We’re seeing with greater clarity what is most essential to our educational mission

- relationships born of unifying love, empathy, service to the dear neighbor and the cultivation of wisdom. The relationships are the work. How we do things is as important as what we do.

In the tradition of the Congregation of St. Joseph, we are called to meet the unmet needs of the day and time and again, our experience reveals that what our world needs most of all is the presence of Christ through our encounters with one another - through service to the dear neighbor without distinction among classmates, students, families, colleagues, alumnae and the wider community. We need to be more intentional in how we prioritize time for prayer, retreat, reflection and sisterhood, opportunities where relationships and community are celebrated and treasured.

And as we embrace these opportunities to gather and celebrate the gifts of each day, we are able to see, like the disciples on the road to Eammus, that Jesus walks with us.

Instrumental Music teacher Mr. David Mumford (11 years), College Counseling Department Chair and Counselor Ms. Susan Emmerich (19 years), Science teacher Mr. David Weiss (25 years), Math teacher Mrs. Paula Schuetz P’16 (27 years) and CORE Ministry teacher and Distinguished Alumna Cathy Lanning Knittel ’67, P’97 (33 years) are retiring from Saint Joseph Academy.

We are incredibly grateful for the gifts these individuals have given to help shape and inspire young women to become the compassionate leaders our world needs.

“The number one thing I will miss is the students. Students have taken excellent leadership roles in section rehearsals, preparing ensembles for the OMEA contest and the Fermata Recital. I will miss the Performing Arts team, faculty and the great administrative support I have had over the years. “During my time at Saint Joseph Academy, I have enjoyed watching my daughter, Julie Jensen ’10 graduate, traveling to Le Puy, France, which was lifechanging, a 2018 service trip to the Navajo Nation, being a part of more than 1,700 students applying to college, Walk of the Roses, summer visits to college campuses and morning prayer services in the Holy Family Chapel. I will miss the energy of the faculty, which inspires me every day,” stated College Counseling Department Chair and Counselor Ms. Susan Emmerich P’10.

Mrs. Paula Schuetz P’16 voiced, “My favorite memories are taking students on field trips, traveling to Le Puy, France and China, being with faculty and staff on special days when we could spend time together, students growing to love mathematics and eventually majoring in Math or Statistics. I will miss all of the members of my great department, all of the awesome faculty and staff who have shared their stories and all of the hard-working students who love to learn.”

served as both a Theology teacher and an Alumnae Director. Mrs. Knittel leaves a legacy through her love and passion for Saint Joseph Academy and the Congregation of St. Joseph.

“As I retire from full time classroom teaching, my thoughts turn to all of the young women I have been privileged to teach who, in turn, taught me so much, to the wonderful Sisters with whom I taught and with the grand lay colleagues with whom I worked who became my friends. My prayerful hope is that Saint Joseph Academy continues to flourish - and that the young women who are students, both now and in the future, will take the lessons learned here and carry them into the rest of their lives just as we have. The world has always been and always will be, in need of women of consequence – Joe’s girls. You and I know just where they can be found!”

We remain grateful for all they have done to make sure that every student, teacher and staff member felt like they had a place here. Their family, and the Saint Joseph Academy family, are one and the same. We are thankful for the gifts these individuals have given to help shape and empower generations of our students into women of unifying love, resulting in more than a century in service to the Academy.

We will miss them all and wish them a happy and healthy retirement!

I Am a Joe’s Girl Written by Distinguished Alumna and Retired Theology Teacher Cathy Lanning Knittel ’67, P’97

I

have been involved with the Congregation of St. Joseph (CSJ) and Saint Joseph Academy for my entire life. I had two great-aunts who were Sisters of St. Joseph. They both passed away before I was born, but I listened to my maternal grandmother’s stories about them, and one of the phrases I will never forget was part of those stories. Apparently, in former times, permission to leave the convent for anything, even a family wedding, wake or funeral, was very rarely granted. If such permission was granted, you couldn’t go alone, but rather you had to take along a ‘prudent companion.’

The reason that phrase, ‘prudent companion’ stuck with me was that is how I came to think of the CSJ and Saint Joseph Academy (Nazareth Academy and St. Therese Academy alumnae included).

Our mom was a graduate of Saint Joseph Academy, and we were surrounded by her Saint Joseph Academy friends, wonderful women and alumnae whom my mother truly loved and shared her entire life. These were her prudent companions. Eventually, my three sisters and I would become graduates of Saint Joseph Academy as well.

My daughter would follow thirty years later, along with a niece and a number of cousins.

We would all come away – even decades later – with lifelong friends who are still part of our lives to this day, so many happy

memories all within the context of a truly excellent education. We are Joe’s girls.

For me, a Joe’s girl is a person who is blessed to be part of a community wherein you are marked with the spirit of the Congregation of St. Joseph for the rest of your life. That spirit defines you in large measure, second only to your family. You are a woman who is strong, who acts on principle, who speaks up and calls for change to do what is just and right. That is who you are and what you know because that is what you experienced, what you witnessed. Joe’s girls aren’t one-dimensional, however. These women are intelligent, thoughtful, kind, generous, fun-loving and humorous.

I have witnessed all of these traits in members of my family, in my wonderful classmates and in my beloved students. I began teaching at Saint Joseph Academy in 1971 after graduating from college. I would end up teaching for a total of thirty-three years (thirty of those years at the Academy) and also serve for three additional years as Alumnae Director, when I returned to the workforce after being home with my children for fourteen years.

What a gift to see that in my years away from the Academy, everything I knew and loved about being a part of the Saint Joseph Academy sisterhood was still here – a constant thread – a true heritage. Again,

I have to credit the Congregation of St. Joseph. They have the uncanny ability to somehow know what to alter or change, what to treasure, protect and keep as part of their legacy. The CSJs never do this frivolously or in an unstudied fashion; they observe, study, pray (a lot) – and then and only then, do they act. I have noticed that same process within the school community as well. Saint Joseph Academy operates effectively within the context of the times in which we find ourselves, and yet all the while we have kept our foundation and what makes us unique! I think that is why young women love it here within their time here just like we did in ours. We carry that love of SJA/CSJ through our whole lives.

As I retire from full-time classroom teaching, my thoughts turn to all of the young women I have been privileged to teach who, in turn, taught me so much, to the wonderful Sisters with whom I taught and with the perfectly grand lay colleagues who became my friends. My prayerful hope is that Saint Joseph Academy continues to thrive; indeed, flourish, and that the young women who are students both now and in the future will take the lessons learned here and carry them into the rest of their lives just as we have. Alison Morgan P’19 and Adriane Hicks Named Assistant Principals

W

e are pleased to announce beginning for the 2021-2022 school year, Mrs. Alison Morgan P’19 will serve as the Assistant Principal for Academics and Mrs. Adriane Hicks will serve as the Assistant Principal for Student Success.

Mrs. Morgan has demonstrated great leadership and commitment to the mission of Saint Joseph Academy through her work as Spanish Teacher, World Language Department Chair, Co-Chair of Kairos retreats and most recently as our first Global Program Director.

In each of these roles, she has demonstrated an outstanding capacity to boldly advance the mission of the Academy through strong relationships, outstanding collaborative leadership and strategic thinking.

“I am honored to embark upon a new journey in my career that focuses on the holistic development of students through the mentoring of teachers and collaboration with our administrative team. My role ensures that the curriculum advances the mission of the Academy through management of the academic programs and operations. I look forward to this new challenge, and welcome your feedback, discussion and open communication,” voiced Mrs. Alison Morgan P’19.

Since joining Saint Joseph Academy nine years ago, her experience as School Counselor has given her a foundation that has prepared her for this new opportunity. “Working at Saint Joseph Academy is a blessing; I thank God for the opportunity to serve and support the young women of our community. As the Assistant Principal for Student Success, I am excited to continue working with our students, faculty/

staff members, and families to maintain a learning environment that builds community, inspires creativity, and challenges our students to live out the gospel values as they discover God's purposes for their lives.”

“Both Mrs. Morgan and Mrs. Hicks have demonstrated throughout their careers that they are mission-driven, hardworking and highly intelligent. Both women understand that strong relationships are fundamental to everything we do. We are blessed to have them in these roles in our community,” shared Principal Mr. Jeff Sutliff.

Spring Sports Rugby Advances to State Final One year off due to the global pandemic was not going to deter the success of the Jaguar Rugby program. It was the debut season for Head Coach Ms. Mary Wunderle after having her first season with the program delayed from 2020. Battling adversity all season long and facing one of the toughest schedules in the state, the Jaguars ultimately were able to make it all the way to the State Final in Columbus. The team finished the season as RugbyOhio Division II State Runner-Up. Mary Clare Hough ’21 (granddaughter of Margaret McNeeley Harkness ’60 and sister of Meghan Hough ’20) was one of the leading scorers for the Jaguars. Georgia Wagner ’24 (granddaughter of Loretta Smolko Hamilton ’67 and daughter of Marcella Hamilton ’00) provided elusive speed for the team and Maggie Sweeney ’22 contributed in big ways late in the season in major games. Alaysia Martin ’22 and Eileen Costello ’23 (daughter of Clare Maloney Costello ’88) were also among the playmakers for the team this season who add to the promise of next year when the Jaguars plan to return to Columbus once again.

Crew Finishes Season as 15th Fastest in the Country It was a banner year for the Saint Joseph Academy Crew program. Much like the other spring programs, the Jaguar Navy had a layoff of more than 500 days since their last regatta. The team competed for the first time in nearly two years at the Arch City Tri-Meet, and it was the start of an incredible year for the program.

’24 and coxswain Lulu Zuchold ’24) took home gold, the first medal in that event in school history. The Varsity 8+ (Meghan Rogers ’21 (daughter of Kimberley Streeter Rogers ’86, sister of Molly Rogers ’19, Nora Roche ’22, Catie Crump ’21, Catherine Hilow ’21 (daughter of Judith Ghazoul Hilow ’81, sister of Elizabeth Hilow ’06 and Eleanore Hilow Andreani ’08, Mary Gassman ’22 (sister of Emma Gassman ’17), Emily Jones ’23, Sophie Schmidt ’22, Izzie Stevens ’21 (daughter of Kathy Francway-Stevens ’89) and coxswain Penelope Tsambounieris ’22) also made school history earning the school’s first Midwest medal in the Varsity 8+ event.

Overall, the Jaguars took home the Midwest Scholastic Runner-Up trophy, the school’s third runner-up trophy in program history.

The Varsity 8+ then went on to race at the SRAA National Championship Regatta in Philadelphia and was the 15th fastest Varsity 8+ in the country.

Lacrosse Has Record-Breaking Season The Lacrosse program played their first game since May 17, 2019 this season, and for the third season in a row the Jaguars compiled a winning record. This time it was a record of 14 wins after going 13-4 the past two seasons. Head Coach Laureen Antall’s squad once again advanced to the Regional qualifying round this year before bowing out to Shaker Heights High School. The Jaguars scored 15 or more goals 11 times this season, including breaking the school record for goals in a game in their 25-1 win over Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School in the first round of the postseason.

Multiple Jaguars racked up postseason awards this year. Grace Mattimore ’22 was named First Team Ohio High School Girls Lacrosse Coaches Association (OHSGLCA) All-District. Faith Maruna ’21 and Anna Davis ’22 (sister of Bethany Davis ’10) were both named Second Team OHSGLCA All-District. Susie McGowan ’23 was named Honorable Mention. Both Mattimore and Maruna led the way on offense this year for the Jaguars, with each recording their 100th career goals on back-to-back days respectively.

Track & Field Has Successful Post-Season Run After overcoming a challenging indoor season, the outdoor Track & Field team had another successful spring season. The best finish of the season for the Jaguars came at the Gilmour Miele Invitational when the team finished in third place. Erin Hvizdos ’24 (daughter of Keli Rook Hvizdos ’91 and sister of Abbie Hvizdos ’20) set a personal record at the invitational, finishing second in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:31.43.

Softball Earns Second District Title It was one of the best seasons in Jaguars’ Softball history, and after a year layoff due to COVID-19, the Jaguars were hungrier than ever. As a result, they were poised to dominate.

The team started the season red hot on a 10-game win streak. During that streak, they secured four straight shutout wins. MaxPreps listed Saint Joseph Academy as #1 in Ohio in Division I early in the season. The growing success throughout the campaign resulted in a deep postseason run for the Jaguars. The team captured the Academy’s second District Championship in program history with a 6-1 win over Avon High School. It was the Jaguars’ first District Title since 2013.

The Jaguars were led all season long by the stellar pitching of Maya Johnson ’21 (sister of Kaylyn Johnson ’17), a University of Pittsburgh commit. Day-in-and-day-out, she had double digit strikeouts in her outings, including 18 strikeouts in her perfect game against rival Magnificat High School. It was her second perfect game of the season. (Her first perfect game was against Lakewood High School in which she recorded her 500th career strikeout.) Maya captured the win for the Jaguars in the District final with 13 strikeouts. The offense was led by power bats all season long from Jordan Kohut ’22 and Olivia Lopez ’22 (daughter of Michelle Boyle Lopez ’91), to go along with solid production from Hailey Hampu ’22 (sister of Katelyn Hampu ’17) and Maya Johnson ’21.

Meet with a time of 5:30.12. Catherine Dial ’21 (granddaughter of Rosina McGarrity Dial ’56 and daughter of Anne Faulhammer Dial ’86) was another Jaguar who set personal bests in the shot put at the Euclid Relays with a score of 34 ft. 7.5 in. She also won the discus event at the Euclid Relays with a score of 105 ft. 4 in.

The Jaguars had a tremendous postseason as well. The team sent five athletes to the OHSAA Division I Regional Meet. Catherine Dial ’21 represented the Jaguars in the shot put, Lizzie McGuire ’21 (granddaughter of Jeanne Price McGuire ’66†) competed in the 800 meter run, Erin Hvizdos ’24 went to run in the 3200 meter run, and Lizzie McGuire ’21, Erin Hvizdos ’24, Anna Duesenberg ’22 and Carlee Blankenship ’22 all competed in the 4x800 meter relay.

The Fred A. Lennon Trust Joins the

With Lifted Hearts Campaign… with Another Challenge!

D

uring February 2020’s “Celebrate the Academy” gala and the subsequent issue of UPDATE, we unveiled our multiyear With Lifted Hearts capital campaign. This multiphase initiative is designed to move our campus forward for future generations and secure Saint Joseph Academy as a leading girls’ high school for decades to come.

Thanks to the incredible gift from the Congregation of St. Joseph and our generous lead donors, Fitzmaurice Hall was able to be renovated as phase one - creating 10 large classrooms, two prayer and meditation rooms and common areas where students can gather to work, study or spend time together between classes. This project finished on time and on budget.

As these renovations were nearing completion, the Academy was presented with a unique opportunity. We could take advantage of the historically low interest rates while retaining our quality construction team to complete the campaign’s second phase – expansion of the Makerspace innovation lab. The ability to move forward with the Makerspace project was a true blessing. To adhere to local and state COVID-19 distancing and safety guidelines and to execute our School Instructional Continuity Plan successfully, it was critical to identify more classroom space. Full completion of the Makerspace innovation lab renovations had to be paused to enable that space to be divided into two large classrooms.

Combined, Fitzmaurice Hall and the Makerspace innovation lab increased our learning space by nearly 33,000 square feet in a school year where we needed every inch to keep our faculty, staff and students safely distanced.

In addition to finding creative space solutions for classroom instruction, our fundraising efforts for the With Lifted Hearts campaign had to be reimagined. The campaign is being moved forward through the stewardship of new co-chairs Mr. Chuck and Mrs. Maureen Fallon Adler ’79, P’06, ’08 and ’10 and Mrs. Cathy O’Malley Kearney P’24 along with an expanded committee of alumnae, parents/guardians and the Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph.

The frequent adjustments to global pandemic restrictions caused us to pause some of our efforts and reimagine others. However, now is the time to give our students and faculty the facilities they need while building on Saint Joseph Academy’s strengths that set us apart - a campus where ingenuity, artistry and spirituality will truly flourish for many generations.

The With Lifted Hearts campaign was designed to meet the needs of each and every student – mind, body and spirit. In addition to funding the Fitzmaurice Hall and the Makerspace innovation lab projects, the third phase, an 8,400 square foot 12

addition in the Academy building is still needed. Completing this campaign phase near the Academy Center will result in a Performing Arts teaching space, an expanded Athletics/Wellness space, a student commons space and a new, more convenientlylocated main entrance off the side parking lot.

To help us make up for the time lost due to COVID-19 and make this vision a reality, The Fred A. Lennon Charitable Trust is partnering with the Academy again, offering a dollar-for-dollar match of all gifts and pledges to the With Lifted Hearts campaign up to $50,000 for a second year! Helen Malloy ’57 was honored with the 2021 Malachi House Community Service award. Each year, Malachi House honors a person or persons who are making significant contributions to the community through their time, actions, talents and dedication.

Carolyn Bubnick Sopko N’62 was recently honored at her retirement from Mount Alverna for the care and compassion she has provided patients and their families over her 56-year nursing career.

1970s

Mary Ann Corrigan-Davis ’71 was honored with The Distinguished Educator Award from John Carroll University in recognition of her commitment to the Department of Education’s mission: “to prepare students to teach and lead for a more just society in schools and other settings.” Kathleen Jones ’15 was one of the presenters.

Mary Ellen Potochick Hanna N’76 is part of a collaboration between a group of oncologists and OhioHealth, serving as an Office Specialist in the Imaging Department of the new Dublin Cancer Center.

Molly Butler Bonamico ’10 married Carmen Bonamico on December 7, 2020.

Bridget VanDenHaute Foldesy ’10 married Benjamin Foldesy on April 24, 2021. The wedding party included: Shannon VanDenHaute Lembach ’01, Brooke VanDenHaute Benes ’08, Meghan Donelon ’10, Kelsey VanDenHaute ’11 and Bailey Williams ’12.

Alex Kozak ’12 earned her Master’s Degree from Harvard University and is now the Development Associate at Rockefeller Group in New York, creating new development projects that provide hundreds of construction jobs.

Megan Lowes Bolin ’09 graduated from Creighton University with her Doctorate degree in Interdisciplinary Leadership in Education in May 2021. She successfully defended her dissertation entitled The Young Adult Leaders of the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland: A Qualitative Study on the New Generation of Volunteer Leaders in Parish Ministry.

Emily Armstrong ’13 is starting her residency at the Cleveland Clinic in Obstetrics and Gynecology after earning her M.D. from The Ohio State University.

Samantha Manzuk ’09 has accepted a position as the Life Enrichment Director for the Normandy Care Center, a skilled nursing and rehabilitation center in Rocky River.

Jenea Adams ’15 was recently awarded a fully funded Presidential Ph.D. Fellowship from the University of Pennsylvania. She will spend the next three years as an inaugural University of Pennsylvania Presidential Ph.D. Fellow.

Christina Pintenich Pasini ’09 married Alex Pasini on May 22, 2021. Alex is the son of Lisa Laugel Pasini ’81, grandson of Bette Roberts Laugel ’40, and nephew of Lynn Laugel Savron ’67 and Laurie Laugel Juris ’76. Megan Bolin ’09 was a member of the wedding party.

Melissa Johnson ’14 earned her Master of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and is now a Counselor at the University of Mount Union.

Molly Walsh ’15 received a Going the Extra Mile (GEM) award from NBCUniversal Media, LLC. She created a demographic worksheet for the NBC Chicago newsroom to reference to ensure their reporting is more diverse and inclusive.

Important Admission Dates

Fall Open House Prospective parents/guardians and students are invited to attend Saint Joseph Academy’s Fall Open House on Sunday, October 17, 12-4 p.m. Student Ambassadors will give tours of the campus, and faculty and coaches will be available to answer questions about the educational and extracurricular opportunities at Saint Joseph Academy.

8th Grade Shadowing begins on September 20 and runs through December 10.

High School Placement Test (HSPT): Required for eighth grade students interested in applying for admission to the Class of 2026.

October 30, November 3 and November 13: Students may register for the date of their choice. All tests administered at Saint Joseph Academy.

Results from this test will be considered when reviewing student applications for admission and scholarships.

The test will also be offered on Saturday, January 8, 2022 and Wednesday, February 2 for admission consideration only.
