Freshman Mentoring Program Helps All Semester

The transition into high school for the Class of 2020 is being eased

by SJA's unique Freshman Mentoring Program, now in its fifth year. It provides each student with a faculty mentor with whom they can identify, someone they can go to directly with any questions or issues. New this year is the addition of several student mentors from the Junior Class.

Freshmen creating hearts reflecting "Weaving One Heart," this year's charism theme

CeCe Bouchelle '20 said, "Adding Junior mentors to the program really helps. We can get advice from students who have been in our shoes and know how it feels, what to expect in classes or even what the Freshman Welcome will be like."

Each month from August through December, small groups of freshmen meet with their mentors during an activity block. A different topic for discussion is featured

each month, such as orientation, finding one's passion through clubs, and study skills/exam preparation.

This week, freshmen and their mentors reflected on how to embrace this year's charism theme of "Weaving one Heart," as they created woven hearts for a school bulletin board.

"The heart weaving activity helped me to realize what SJA is about, what it means to have unity at school and in the community," Maeve Lenehan '20, said. "We are all equal, all together with love."

Attention Freshmen Parents - Don't Miss Out! Help your freshmen daughter create a memory at our annual Grandparents' Day. This is a very special event that will be remembered by the both grandparents and their granddaughter.

Name: Jenna Prahst '17 Accomplishments: Jenna was an Americorp intern with the Lake Erie Islands Conservancy and Nature Center at Put-InBay this summer. She monitored purple martin birds in their nests, was a camp counselor, and participated in parklands fundraising, development, launch and maintenance.

Jenna notes: "This was the most incredible opportunity because I got to be outside, helping others see the world in a better way".

Activities & Interests: Jenna is most proud of her work transforming land into a beautiful new park called Massie Cliffside Preserve. It's now her favorite place at Put-InBay; she even took her senior pictures there.

College Corner

The annual Grandparents' Day includes the celebration Mike O'Malley, Barb O'Malley, Riley Drellishak '19, of our All Saints' Day mass Maillie Drellishak '18, Gene Drellishak and a special afternoon reception, being held this year on Tuesday, November 1, from 12-3 p.m.

To ensure you receive an invitation for this event, please complete the contact form for your daughter's grandparents and return it to SJA. Here is a link to the form that was provided at the Freshmen Parent Meeting on August 24.

The deadline for submitting forms for this event is this Monday! Students may drop off their contact sheets to the Main office Monday morning.

Students Win OAEA Competition Artwork by Olivia Finau '18, Julia Libbey '19 and Mary Chura '18 was accepted into the Ohio Art Education Association (OAEA) Emerging Artist Exhibition. Of the 200 works submitted, only 143 were accepted for the juried show. The show is designed to help motivate and inspire new artists across a range of techniques.

"All of these students show great promise in the arts. I look forward to having them again in advanced art classes," shared Art teacher Mrs.Tammy Sparks.

Their artwork will be on display the State Teacher's Retirement Systems building in Columbus from September 8 through October 8.

If you are looking for, or want to offer carpooling to or from SJA, please email Mrs. Maureen McAdams, Administrative Assistant to the Principal, at mmcadams@sja1890.org along with your name, home and email addresses and phone number.

Roundup Your Sporting Gear to Help Mission Possible & Jaguar Soccer The Jaguar Soccer program is collecting gently used sporting goods (balls, bats, cleats, gloves, etc.) for donation to the children of Higuey, Dominican Republic. This is the community supported by the St. Ambrose "Mission Possible" program. SJA students have served in the Dominican Republic twice through this program.

Stop by SJA this Saturday, September 9 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to make your donation and watch the soccer team take on SJA faculty in a friendly game of kickball. Don't have any sporting goods to donate but still want to help out? Cash donations are also being accepted.

Proceeds from this event will benefit the Mission Possible organization and the Jaguar soccer program.

Jags For The Cure Join us as the SJA Volleyball Jaguars take on Gilmour at home on Thursday, September 15 as they Volley for the Cure for breast cancer. Freshman game starts at 4:30 p.m., JV at 5:30 p.m.and Varsity at 6:30 p.m. games at SJA at home against Gilmour.

Wear pink to the games to show your support of breast cancer awareness and help raise funds by buying SJA themed "Volley for the Cure" t-shirts, raffle tickets and pink ribbons to honor a loved one. Funds raised go directly the American Cancer Society.

Sports Highlights Our fall sports teams continue to do well during the early season. As of Thursday, September 9, all of the SJA teams have a combined record of 49-12:

Jags Go 1-2-3 at Ashland XC Invitational The Jaguars had an outstanding showing in their first meet of the season at Ashland on Saturday. SJA won the team title and had the top three runners in the varsity race. Sydney Seymour '18, Maggie Wagner '18 and Annie Allen '20 went 1-2-3 while six of the Jaguars finished in the top 17.

Soccer Teams Remains Undefeated The JV and V soccer teams each picked up a pair of wins last week to remain undefeated in the season. JV and Varsity both beat North Olmsted and Parma as the JV team is now 6-0 and V is 5-0. The Jaguars had a 3-0 lead last night at St. Vincent-St. Mary but the game was called with 1:39 remaining in the first half due to bad weather. The two teams will pick up the game from there on a date to be determined.

Volleyball Continues to Roll The volleyball teams continue to roll as the varsity and JV teams beat Hathaway Brown on Tuesday. Then all three levels of SJA volleyball swept Kenston on Thursday. The freshman team is now 6-0 while Varsity is 6-1 and JV is 6-3.

Tennis Continues Their Impressive Play The Varsity tennis team just kept rolling along this week as they moved to 10-1 on the season with wins against Geneva High School and Green. The 10 wins surpasses the team's win total from last season and the Jags still have 10 dual matches remaining this season.

Golfers Face Tough Conditions, Team on Thursday The Jaguars enjoyed some practice time over the holiday weekend but returned to action on Thursday. The JV posted a close win over Independence on Thursday but the varsity fell to a very strong team at a muddy Big Met golf course. The JV team was led by Kenzie Roe '20 and Mollie Tirpak '19 who fired 45's for the 6-1 JV squad.
