7 Seniors Named National Merit Commended Students Congratulations to the seven seniors named this week as National Merit Commended Students! Students who received this recognition scored at or above the Commended Selection Index (National Selection Index of 209 or higher) and include: Kaylyn Johnson, Greta Noeth, Marisa Petticord, Anna Renner, Victoria Smith, Brittney Ward and Margaret Weaver. These students are among the select group in the top 5 percent of the 1.6 million students who entered the 2017 competition by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test to earn the designation of Commended Student.

Principal Jeff Sutliff made the school-wide announcement on Wednesday. "We know this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities," shared Mr. Sutliff. "We are very proud of these young women."

Blessing of the Boats of the Jaguar Navy On Friday, September 16, crew athletes, their parents, coaches, families, President Mrs. Mary Ann CorriganDavis, Principal Mr. Jeff Suttlif and Asst. Principal Ms. Megan Gaffney gathered on the shores of the Cuyahoga River for the annual Blessing of the Boats.

The blessing of the three new boats was conducted by Sr. Jane Ockuly,CSJ '57 and Sr. Joan Lang, CSJ. Both are big supporters of Jag Athletics. The newest additions to the Jaguar Navy include: J8+ "Momma Z" as well as our first two-person boats, "Calvin" and "Hobbs." There are now 12 boats in the Jaguar Navy fleet. Crew performed well the next day at the Head of the Cuyahoga Regatta, competing against crews from around the country.

Freshmen Welcomed by Seniors Today, the Class of 2020 was officially welcomed by the Class of 2017 in an annual ceremony designed to create a bond between the two classes. This year's event theme was "Camp Jag."

Seniors wearing navy T-shirts with "Life is an Adventure" on the front and "Counselor 2017" on the back greeted the arriving freshmen with cheers and whistle blowing. The freshmen wearing dark green T-shirts with the same design on the front and "Camper 2020" were escorted into the camp-themed hallway.The day of fun included skits, a pillow fight, eating s'mores and lots of singing! Join in the Fun During Grand Reunion/Homecoming


Dash" race this past Saturday, Mariam partnered with Andrea, who unexpectedly opted to run a 5k instead of the 1 mile. Mariam had never run that far, but off they went. "Andrea pulled ahead, but Mariam kept running, finishing her first 5k...in the rain...with the biggest smile on her face", notes Sarah PerezStable, Director of Volunteer Services at YC. She added, "Mariam is an incredible role model and a tremendous friend of YC". Activities & Interests: Active at YC since 2014, Mariam loves helping coach the organization's Paralympic Powerlifting Team and is on their volunteer committee. "Angel, one of my good friends and a participant at YC thought my name was Millennium when we met, not Mariam. It's a little joke/nickname that YC has kept going," shared Mariam. Mariam is also on the Jaguar Lacrosse team and enjoys playing the guitar.

College Corner

Weekend It's a grand weekend starting Friday, October 7 through Sunday, October 9. On Friday, October 7 we celebrate SJA classes ending in "1" and "6." All are welcome to the following events: Saturday October 8: SJA Alumnae and families are invited to cheer on the JV and Varsity Volleyball team from the "SJA Alumnae Section" as they take on Amherst High School in the SJA Academy Center. The JV game begins at 11:00AM and the Varsity game will follow (at approximately 12:30PM). At SJA. Sunday October 9: 12:00 p.m. Homecoming Mass and Community Open House, at SJA in the Academy Center. All SJA alumnae, family and friends are invited to join us for a special Mass of Celebration presided by Rev. Raymond P. Guiao, S.J., President of Saint Ignatius High School. Mass will be in the Academy Center and followed by light refreshments Join us for a tour of the school, visit with old friends and enjoy the day on our beautiful campus. Help CSJs "Serve The Dear Neighbor" on Founder's Day, October 15! In 2007, the seven founding communities of St. Joseph came together to be one as the Congregation of St. Joseph. Since then they have experienced the abundance of God's great love through their relationships with each other and with you. Our annual Fall Open House for prospective students is a great way to explore all that is new at SJA. Sports Highlights Our fall sports team continue to shine! Below is a recap for each team that played this week.

VOLLEYBALL PROGRAM SWEEPS MAGNIFICAT! The SJA volleyball program had an impressive performance on Wednesday evening as all three levels (Freshman, JV and Varsity) of Jaguar volleyball beat Magnificat. The 11-4 varsity Jaguars, posted a 30 sweep of 25-20, 25-19, 25-11 while JV won 25-17, 25-17 and freshman won in three sets (18-25, 25-23, 25-12). The JV team also improved to 11-4 while the freshman team remains undefeated at 9-0. CROSS COUNTRY HAS ANOTHER STRONG SHOWING The SJA cross country team finished 3rd out of 41 teams on Saturday at the Boardman Spartan Invitational. The Jaguars came in third behind Twinsburg (123) and Avon (199) in one of the area's biggest meets of the year. Junior Sydney Seymour finished in fifth place overall with a time of 19:24 while freshman Annie Allen came in 12th with a 19:49. Seymour and Allen were joined by Caitlyn Walsh (48th - 21:04), Amanda Keim (55th - 21:08), Olivia Battistoni (83rd - 21:28), Daniella Saul (89th - 21:36) and Emily Conway (110th - 22:02).

GOLF TEAM COMPETES AT LEAGUE TOURNAMENT


The Jaguar golf team competed in their conference championship match on Thursday at Hudson Country Club. SJA is a member of the Northeast Ohio Independent Schools Girls Golf League. The Jaguars finished in 6th place and were led by senior Izzy Robertson who shot a 96. The JV golf team went 1-1 on the week, which included a win over Bay at Little Met on Wednesday afternoon.

SOCCER JAGS GO 1-1 ON THE WEEK; CURRENTLY 7-2 IN THE SEASON The SJA soccer team played a pair of games this week with the varsity going 1-1. The varsity Jaguars had an impressive performance on Monday night as they went on the road to Elyria Catholic and topped the Panthers 4-0. SJA received goals from Regina Baldado, Claire Horansky, Haley Morgan and Molly Dever. Goalkeepers Kylie Schmitz and Madison Wilson combined to post a shutout for the Jags. On Thursday evening, the Jaguars fell 6-1 to a talented CVCA team. It was only the Jaguars second loss of the season.

TENNIS TEAM'S OTCA TOURNAMENT RUN ENDS AT WALSH JESUIT The Jaguars traveled to Cuyahoga Falls on Thursday to compete against state power Walsh Jesuit in the Division I NE Ohio quarterfinal round of the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association Team Tournament. The Jaguars fell 5-0 in the match but it marked a great showing by the Jags. The appearance in the NEO quarterfinal round is another accomplishment for this year's Jags tennis team, as it is the farthest SJA has advanced in the OTCA Team Tournament. The varsity Jaguars, who are now 12-4 in dual matches this season, have five more matches before their sectional tournament on Oct. 5.
