SJA Featured on WKYC's "Live on Lakeside" On Tuesday, Assistant Principal Miss Megan Gaffney and Seniors Julia Ford and Anne-Marie Crawmer were featured on WKYC's "Live on Lakeside" program. Miss Gaffney shared background about the Academy as well as information regarding our upcoming Open House for prospective parents and students.

Julia and Anne-Marie both discussed courses they are taking and their extracurricular activities. Julia also shared why she chose to attend SJA and the value of their Junior Professional

Anne-Marie Crawmer '17, Julia Ford '17, Miss Megan Gaffney on "Live on Lakeside"

Chinese World Language Students Cultural Immersion Last Friday, World Language students from AP Chinese, Chinese I and II classes went to Cleveland State University with Cleveland area students including Chinese World Language students at CSU Confucius Institute some from Saint Ignatius High School to celebrate the annual Teacher Appreciation Day held by the Confucius Institute at CSU. SJA students wowed attendees with their performance of a Chinese tongue twister song during the event.

Chinese teacher Ms. Megan Hsiao and Assistant Principal Miss Megan Gaffney were among the educators recognized for their support of a Chinese education.

Name: Jessica (Jessa) Nauman '18 Accomplishments: Jessa took an 8 credit General Chemistry course at Harvard University this summer. She credits Mr. Weiss' SJA Honors Chemistry Class with preparing her for the challenge of learning a year's worth of material in 7 weeks. Now in AP Chemistry at SJA, Jessa says compared to Harvard, "many of the experiments are exactly the same and we cover more material in greater detail in AP Chemistry."

As for her future, Jessa hopes the Harvard experience increases her chances of getting into an Ivy League school. Jess shared, "Since the 6th grade I've always wanted to be an oncologist, so I

Established in 2008 and sponsored by the Office of Chinese Language International Council, the Confucius Institute works with local partners to directly support programs and activities that help to deepen the relationship between Cleveland and China.

Today, the program continues to grow as an essential aspect of the SJA learning experience with more offerings available this year in each area. The Wellness Curriculum includes a class-specific focus, a variety of educational opportunities and activities and an online tracking tool to enable students to track their progress towards their credit hour requirements.

Curriculum Requirements: Physical (20 sessions): Varsity sports, Intramurals, select clubs, fitness classes, yoga, Zumba, etc.

Spiritual (10 sessions): Retreats, meditations, Bible study, prayer group, plan a retreat, etc.

College Corner

Speaker Series (attend 2): Topics such as nutrition, mental health, anxiety/stress, human trafficking, violence prevention, alcohol and drug use, etc.

Special Events (plan 1 or attend 2): SJA Health Fair, Heart Health Month, Girls Go Red Event and others The curriculum is organized around monthly themes to keep students interested and engaged. October's theme is Breast Cancer Awareness, and there are many opportunities for students to participate in what interests them the most.

CRCC Shares Tips with Upperclasswomen Throughout this week, Prevention Specialists Ms Constance Connor and Mr. Stephon Davis of the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center (CRCC) engaged juniors and seniors. They spoke about interactive presentations about healthy and unhealthy relationship characteristics and boundaries, warning signs and risk factors that can lead to abusive relationships, staying safe online and offline, and resources available to help anyone in

The CRCC also shared its new text and chat hotline, at 216-619-6192. Ms. Connor and Mr. Davis noted that the students were very engaged in the topics, with some taking pictures of some of key slides and asking questions about how to handle a variety of situations.

Class of 2017 Urban Plunge Retreat For two days last week, nine SJA students attended an Urban Plunge Senior Retreat at St. Patrick's Church in Ohio City to learn more about the plight of Cleveland's poor and the economic social injustices that exist. The students started at St. Herman's House of Hospitality men's shelter, where they served dinner, then shared a meal and conversation with guests. Notes

Karlee Trickel '17, "This experience was life-changing and eye-opening to a life I'm unfamiliar with. Just simple conversations with the homeless reminded me about what is really important in life".

After Mass, the students learned about social justice ministries in Cleveland before touring the West Side Catholic Center and Moriah's Home. They reflected on where they fit in carrying out the Church's mission and the CSJ call that all may be one.

Seniors on Urban Plunge Retreat

"JIME Time" Unites Area Seniors Last Sunday, more than 80 Seniors from Saint Joseph Academy, Saint Ignatius, Magnificat and St. Edward High Schools (JIME) attended an all-seniors picnic on the SJA campus to kick off the school year together. Students brought food to share, and dads from the SJA Fathers' Club grilled hot dogs.

According to Caroline Saracina '17, "Everyone had a lot of fun getting to know the new people, playing yard games together and just having a relaxing afternoon with other Seniors."

Open House Sunday, October 16 for Prospective Students Do you have friends or a family members that want to learn more about all the wonderful things students are experiencing at the Academy? Our annual Fall Open House for prospective students is a great way to explore all that is new at SJA. Enjoy a guided tour to learn about our new spaces, take a stroll around the campus, or meet our faculty and coaches.

Open House is from 1-4 p.m. on October 16. Our Paw Prints Store will also be open during those hours.

Sports Highlights MEMORABLE TENNIS SEASON CONTINUES

The tennis program set three school records this week. With their win at Avon on Monday, the Jaguars posted their 15th team win of the season, which set a school record. The team then continued adding to that record on Tuesday when they topped Hawken "B". SJA came away with a 5-0 victory and claimed a share of the NEOTA Division C title, as the Jags finished league play with an 8-1 record. The title is SJA's first ever championship in NEOTA league play.

The icing on the cake may have come on Wednesday, though, when senior Hannah Schuette and freshman Melissa Martin teamed up in the doubles draw and qualified for districts. Schuette and Martin became the first players in recent SJA tennis history to advance out of the D1 sectional tournament. They will play in the sectional semifinals on Saturday morning and then compete in the district tournament in Akron on Thursday.

VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS UNBEATEN AVON IN MATCHUP OF STATERANKED TEAMS The volleyball program had a big day on Monday as they swept all three levels (Freshman, JV and Varsity) against the Avon Eagles in front of large crowd on CYO Night. The Eagles came into the match ranked #8 in the state in D1. All three levels of Avon volleyball came in undefeated, and all three left the Academy Center with their first losses of the season.

The Varsity Jaguars are now 15-5 on the season, while JV is 14-4 and freshman are 10-0.

CROSS COUNTRY DOMINATES AT GILMOUR ACADEMY The Varsity and JV cross country teams both took home titles at the Gilmour Academy Paul Primeau Invitational on Friday evening. Not only were both teams victorious, but SJA had the overall winners in each of the races. The Varsity Jaguars were led by freshman Annie Allen, who finished first overall in a time of 19:31. She was joined shortly after by fellow Jaguars Sydney Seymour '18 (3rd - 19:45) and senior Maggie Wagner (4th - 20:20). Olivia Battistoni '17 (7th), Amanda Keim '20 (11th), Caitlyn Walsh '18 (13th) and Meghan Hahn '17 (29th) also ran well and contributed to the team title.

Alana Vovk '17 (22:14) captured the title in the JV race and was again followed closely by Claudia Becker '18 (3rd 22:30), Liz Renner '17 (5th - 22:47), Margaret Grant '19 (6th - 22:49), Ceci Wagner '18 (7th - 22:49) and Jessa Nauman '18 (8th - 22:52).

GOLF ENDS SEASON ON A HIGH NOTE The golf team ended their season on Tuesday as five SJA golfers competed in the sectional tournament at the Legacy Course at Sweetbriar. Three SJA seniors, Izzy Robertson, Kristin Hetrick and Emily Welshans, participated in the tournament along with sophomores Libby Poole and Madeline Macalla. The seniors went out on a high note as they each shot their best round ever for 18 holes! Robertson led SJA with a 98.

SOCCER ENTERS FINAL WEEK OF REGULAR SEASON ACTION The Varsity Jaguars went 0-1-1 on the week as they dropped a match at Gilmour Academy Lancers on Tuesday. The Lancers are ranked #1 in the state in Div. 3. The JV Jaguars picked up their 7th win of the season with a 2-1 win at Gilmour. Last Saturday, the Varsity Jaguars tied Fairview 2-2 with goals coming from Sophia Pedone '20 and Claire Horansky '19.
