While students are testing, parents are invited to attend an informative presentation about the Academy presented by our administration. (Saint Joseph Academy uses the HSPT test.)

CSJ Nonagenarians Celebrated Name: Lucy Casper '18 Accomplishments: Lucy shadowed Dr. Michael Hoeflinger, orthopedic surgeon at St. Luke Hospital in Maumee, Ohio for two days this past summer.

She observed numerous shoulder, hip, knee and wrist surgeries from inside the operating room. A Health Science Honors program student, Lucy shares, "Orthopedics is on my radar! I had always thought about it as a potential career path, but never thought it was for me.

After shadowing, I am reevaluating my options and excited to learn more about it. The idea of putting arms, hips, legs, and more back together is really exciting to me! " Activities & Interests: Lucy is performing in the fall play, "Play On!" She is an active volunteer at Fairview Hospital and Holy Trinity Vacation Bible School. She is helping lead an SJA sophomore retreat as well.

On Wednesday, four Nonageneraians received a special birthday party at the St. Joseph Center (CSJ Motherhouse). They shared dessert with SJA President Mary Ann Corrigan-Davis and a few students. Three of the Sisters are SJA alumnae and all were recognized for their lifetime of service.

The special birthday honorees are: Sister Antoinette Campanella '44, Sister Mary Gallagher, Sister Madeline Lammermeier '44 and Sister Catherine Pinkerton '39.

The four students know the Sisters well as they work in their dining room.

Cleveland Clinic Medical Innovation Summit Enlightens Students Ten Health Science Honors program students learned firsthand about the newest innovations in medical technology when they attended the Cleve land Clinic Medical Innovation Summit this past Wednesday at the Huntington Convention Center in Cleveland. These students joined 1700 attendees from 550 organizations in 20

"Break the Silence" Promotes Hope & Healing Five students, accompanied by school counselor Mrs. Adriane Hicks, attended the "Break the Silence" luncheon yesterday sponsored by the Domestic Violence & Child Advocacy Center. Amanda Berry, a survivor of kidnapping, violence and assault for 10 years, was the featured speaker. Amanda is a strong, resilient woman who spoke about hope and healing.

This field trip was made possible by the generosity of Mrs. Linda Johanek P '15 and '18, CEO for the Domestic Violence & Child Advocacy Center.

Freshmen Retreat: "Unifying Love" On Monday, 125 Freshmen attended the "Unifying Love" retreat at the St. Joseph Center (CSJ Motherhouse). This first retreat for the Class of 2020 encouraged them to grow their community - with one another and with God. Through small group discussions and break out sessions, the students had meaningful out-of-classroom time with upperclasswomen and some of the Sisters from the Congregation of St. Joseph.

Lindsay Hajostek '20 shared that to her, 'Unifying Love' means "to love, help, and care for each other. Doing that, you create a bond with God and that person, but also it's when you learn to love, care, and help yourself as God's creation. That's when you become fully unified with God and God's love for you."

Tuition Applications Available Tuition assistance applications are now available for the 2017-2018 school year. Detailed information and links have been emailed to you and your daughter and are also available via the parent and student portals of our website.

Tuition assistance is available through submission of the FACTS Grant & Aid Application form (previously PSAS). The FACTS form should be completed online by November 11, 2016.

Scholarship applications for current students will be available at a later date. Please contact the Finance Office with any questions.

Student-Driven Alternative Energy Showcase Educates Community Students on the "Team Enerjagers" who are competing in the Lexus Eco Challenge hosted an Alternative Energy Showcase yesterday evening.

One of the requirements for the competition is to raise awareness of their mission among others - to help stop global warming and to promote using alternate energy options.

The evening's featured speakers included notable local government representatives who share the same passion: Kristin Hall, Sustainability Manager, Cleveland Mayor's Office of Sustainability Mike Foley, Cuyahoga County Director of Sustainability: "Alternative Energy and Smart Strategies for Making Solar Energy Affordable" SJA Student Presentation by Jadalise Pacheco '18: Ohio House Bill 554 to Suspend Current Alternative Energy Mandates The showcase included event partner sustainability displays and meatless dinner that reinforced the positive environmental impact of sustainable meals.

Contemporary World History Class Promotes Sustainability On Tuesday, Ms. Lesh's World History Class hosted sustainability games and activities to teach students about being more sustainable in a fun, hands-on way. The games focused on two of the fifteen United Nations' Sustainability Goals for 2030: Clean Water and Sanitation and Life Below Water.

Students who participated in a simulation exercise experienced the difficulty fish have swimming in plastics polluted waters. One of the simulations included students wearing ankle weights running through hurdles and around plastic wrapped students. This was designed to simulate how soft drink can plastic containers can impact aquatic life. Another simulation included students carrying a gallon of water on their heads while running, demonstrating the difficulty people in other countries have as they travel to obtain drinking water.

Don't Miss 'Play On!' November 4 - 6 "Play On!" is a hilarious story of a theater group trying desperately to put on a play in spite of maddening interference from a haughty author who keeps revising the script.

Show dates are Friday and Saturday, November 4 and 5, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, November 6 at 2:30 p.m.

Sports Highlights

VOLLEYBALL WINS DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP AGAIN! The Varisty volleyball team defended its district championship last night and for the second consecutive season, swept the Avon Eagles to capture the Grafton Division 1 district title.

The Jaguars used several key runs in each of the three sets to post a 25-22, 25-19, 25-14 sweep.

The team now advances to the regional semifinals where they will play the winner of Toledo St. Ursula/Perrysburg on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Norwalk High School.

Jaguar Varsity volleyball has been dominant in sectional/district play over the last two years. The Jaguars swept all three matches last year in sectionals/districts on their way to the school's first district volleyball championship. This year's run followed a similar storyline when they swept Westlake in the sectional final, Olmsted Falls in the district semifinal and Avon in the district final.

In the opening set, the Jaguars fell behind 7-3 but then scored 8 of the next 11 points to take an 11-10 lead. Avon went up 20-18 and looked poised to win the first set in sectional or district play against the Jaguars since Oct. 21, 2014. But SJA responded with four straight points to take a 22-20 lead. Junior Beth Brady then got it going and posted a

kill and an ace to lead SJA to the 25-22 first set win.

The second set was tied at 9-9 and then Avon pushed ahead to take a 13-9 lead. SJA went on one of their patented runs again and scored 7 of the next 8 to take a 16-14 lead. Cecylia Guye had two big kills and SJA finished off the second set on a 16-6 run to post a 25-19 win and take a 2-0 lead.

The third and final set was in keeping with the first two sets. Jaguars trailed 10-6 and it appeared Avon had a chance to make the match interesting. However, Jaguars caught fire and scored 14 of the next 15 points to open up a 20-11 lead.

Senior Colleen Drellishak, whose great serving throughout the postseason has sparked several SJA runs, recorded back-to-back aces during the Jaguars' burst. The Jaguars closed it out on a Beth Brady '18 ace.

CROSS COUNTRY FINISHES AS DISTRICT RUNNER-UP; ADVANCE TO REGIONALS On Saturday, the cross country team finished as the district runner-ups at the Willoughby district meet. The team, on a cold and blustery afternoon, finished second out of 12.

Freshman Annie Allen (18:52) ran a great race in her first postseason meet to finish in second place while Junior Sydney Seymour (19:02) had a very strong showing as the returning state qualifier placed fourth. Senior Olivia Battistoni ran strong to finish in 11th place in 19:50 while fellow Senior Maggie Wagner (19:58) came in 16th. Freshman Amanda Keim (20:16) fared very well in her first postseason meet as she came in 20th.

With their second-place finish, the Jaguars advance to Saturday's regional meet at Boardman.

FOUR JAGS RECEIVE SOCCER HONORS Four members of the soccer program earned all-district honors this past weekend at the Greater Cleveland Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association (GCSSCA) meeting.

Students and their achievements are as follows: Hannah Carruthers '18 earned GCSSCA Second-Team All-District Honors Regina Baldado '18 - GCSSCA Honorable-Mention All-District Claire Horansky '19 - GCSSCA Honorable-Mention All-District Frannie Smith '17 - GCSSCA Honorable-Mention All-District Congratulations to these Jaguars and first-year head coach Mr. Cory Otto on an outstanding season for SJA soccer!

Swim & Dive Team Fundraiser Next Friday Please join fellow parents and coaches for an enjoyable evening at P.J. McIntyres! Heavy appetizers, soft drinks, beer and wine will be available in the private dining room (downstairs). There will also be games and auction items to add to the fun! All are welcome to join us.

Tickets are $25 and will be available at the door. All proceeds will benefit the Jaguar Swim and Dive team.
