November 4 Swim and Dive Team Fundraiser, P.J. McIntyre's Irish Pub, 6-9:00 p.m.

Offered for the past 30 years by the Cleveland Leadership Center, the program connects high school students to Cleveland and the people, places and projects moving it forward. This year's class is comprised of 55 students from 33 public, private, parochial and home schools throughout Cuyahoga County.

During a kick-off retreat and 6 full-day sessions throughout the year, participants learn about Northeast Ohio, develop leadership skills, cross traditional demographic boundaries and see first-hand how they can contribute to the community.

Student Spotlight

Annual Breakfast Celebrates Legacy Connections More than 100 people including students and their mothers and grandmothers who are alumnae gathered for the annual Legacy Breakfast.Charlotte Baker '20 will graduate almost 100 years after her late great-grandmother, Helen Cole Landers 1922. Mrs. Landers is also greatgrandmother to Maia George '16 and Sophie The Class of 2020 with their legacy connections George '18, and mother of Sharen Landers Thompson '63. These families are truly keeping the SJA family tradition alive and well.

Living Our Faith: Respect for Life Mass & Rally Name: Hannah Glaser '18 Accomplishments: Hannah attended the National Student Leadership Conference (NSLC) for Business at Yale University this past summer. She and other high school students invited from 70 countries, attended lectures about business law, international business and marketing.

Additionally, she worked on real world business simulation teams that handled critical management issues and even developed and pitched new products.

Hannah says of the experience, "To be successful in a business career, you need to be able to take what you've learned from all of your classes and use it to your advantage."

On Thursday, approximately 60 students, led by the Catholic Students for Peace and Justice (CSPJ) club members and advisor and CORE Ministry teacher Mr. Dan Guion, traveled downtown for the Respect Life Mass and Rally at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.

Together with students from other Catholic high schools, the gift of life was celebrated and its importance was spread with the community. Kiera Reilly '18 represented the school as a reader during Mass. Students traveled to Public Square after Mass, where Kiera, Riley Justice '17 and Jada Pacheco '18 gave speeches on the importance of life and love for all people.

Suicide Prevention and Awareness Week The SADD Club (Students Against Destructive Decisions) organized a Suicide Prevention Week with several activities to bring awareness to resources available to the SJA community. The week was kicked off by an "Out of the Darkness" walk, sponsored by the Cleveland Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. CORE Ministry teacher Ms. Renee Brickman and six students participated in this fundraiser, which supports suicide prevention programs.

NSLC. Other SADD Club initiatives for the week included: Activities & Interests: Hannah is very involved in theatre, having performed in SJA fall plays for the past 2 years. She won the 2016 "Best Overall Performance" award for her work in the annual area high school One Acts Festival.

White T-shirt/socks/accessories dress down day today to end this "Out of Darkness" week Suicide Prevention Hotline Cards, located in the Arcade A SADD produced video to spread awareness on the prominence of suicide and depression in teens' lives.

Hannah has also been a SJA counselor for the Music and Theatre Summer Camp, writes for the Jaguar Beat, is a member of the Student Ambassador program, is in the Latin Club and is a peer tutor.

Hannah plans to pursue a career in Human Resources Management.

College Corner

School: Allegheny College Location: Meadville, PA 2 hours from Cleveland, Small town Enrollment: 2,300 Undergraduates Strongest Programs: Environmental and Biological Sciences, Political Science, English, International Studies, Psychology Fun Facts: The "13 Plank" tradition states that all freshmen must be kissed on the 13th plank of the campus bridge by an upperclassman to be considered a "true Allegheny student!"

Freshman boys try to steal the plank every year to prevent this from happening!

A reminder that the Guardian Angel box, located in the Chapel, is where students can place written notes when there is a concern about themselves or someone else. The box is checked daily and appropriate action is taken.This program was started by the parents of Joe "Ski", Anielski, a student from Saint Ignatius High School who committed suicide 6 years ago. Joe's parents feel that if only one person would have written a note, maybe Joe would still be with them. The Anielskis have given Guardian Angel boxes to schools in Ohio, West Virginia and Tennessee.

Junior Parents: Letters for Kairos Retreatants Due Nov. 1 Help your daughter get the most out of her Kairos Retreat on November 3, 4 and 5 by praying for her and writing a letter expressing how much she means to you. Letters from other family members are welcomed as well.

Deadline for submitting letters is Tuesday, November 1, 2016. Email letters here, mail to Ms. Alison Barberic's attention, or drop off in the main office. If mailing or dropping off the letters, please make sure the outside of the envelope has your daughter's first and last name on it and mark it with "Parent Letter."

College Visits Help Students Narrow Choices Last Friday, College Counseling hit the road to Pennsylvania with 20 Juniors and Seniors to visit both Slippery Rock University, a large public institution, and Allegheny College, a small liberal arts school.

presentations and tours of both schools. Participant Lydia Rozic'18 shares, "I would recommend these trips. They're informational and very worthwhile. It's a good way to explore a college you may not have ever known about."

Ms. Susan Emmerich, Department Chair and College Counselor, Participating Juniors and Seniors at notes that this was the 4th Allegheny College college tour of this type offered with no cost to the student. "The goal is to provide the first step in exposing Juniors to the types of college options available: large vs. small schools, private vs. state, local vs. distant. We strive to ensure that students are prepared, so that by the time they are Seniors they have a short list of colleges in which they are interested". A Spring, 2017 tour is in the works.

Facing History Field Trip Exemplifies IB MYP Learning On Tuesday, students in the Facing History and Ourselves - The American Experience class visited the Maltz Museum to explore the "This Light of Ours" exhibit, which features photos from activist photographers from the civil rights era.

They also toured the museum, learning from the works there, as well as from the docents.

This is the second year for the Seniors-only Facing History class about morality-based citizenship, taught jointly by CORE Ministry teacher Mrs. Cathy Lanning Knittel '67 and Social Studies teacher Mr. Nick Roaldi. The course blends history with Catholic social justice; students explore the complex cultural and social justice issues of immigration, gender roles, race, poverty and education.

Mrs. Knittel explained, "The class is run under the model of blended learning directed by the teachers but provides the students lots of time away from class to research various topics. We look at what has occurred in our country regarding these issues, what is happening now, and what they predict (and can be a part of to change negative outcomes) in the future - all with a decidedly Catholic, Christian, moral and ethical base. The students shared that they think everyone should take the class. Mr. Roaldi and I consider that high praise."

Nazareth Library's Microsite Gets a Makeover The Nazareth Library's microsite was recently updated with a new look and easier navigation. The updated site makes it easy for your daughter to find the books, resources and more that she needs for her class work, as well as for leisure.

Sports Highlights HAHN SETS COURSE RECORD ON CROSS COUNTRY SENIOR NIGHT The cross country team held their annual senior night meet on Wednesday at Mastick Park. The Jaguars competed in

their race against Mentor and the Jags came away with the victory as they took home seven of the first 10 finishers. SJA was led by Senior Meghan Hahn who set a course-record and PR in a time of 20:18. The rest of the top 10 included Emily Conway '18 (3rd), Alana Vovk '17 (4th), Margaret Grant '19 (6th), Jocelyn Perkins '18 (7th), Claudia Becker '18 (8th), Grace Kelley '19 (9th) and Liz Renner '17 (10th).

The Jaguars also honored 22 of their Seniors on Senior Night, marking the largest senior class in SJA cross country history.

The team will compete in the district meet on Saturday at Willoughby South High School. The girls' division 1 race will begin at approximately 2:20 p.m.

VOLLEYBALL ADVANCES TO DISTRICT SEMIFINALS The Jaguars advanced to the Grafton Midview district semifinals on Wednesday night with a three-set sweep (25-21, 25-17, 25-6) of Westlake. The team had a slow start and trailed early in the first set before rallying to take a 1-0 lead and with the final set jumping out to a 13-0 lead. They extended their lead to 16-1 and finished off the Jaguar Cross Country Seniors Demons 25-6 in the third set. Junior Abby Robejsek was dominant for the Jaguars. She posted a team-high 9 kills without an error (hitting .900) to go along with two kills. Cecylia Guye '19 added six kills and three blocks while Colleen Neitzel '18 posted a team-high seven blocks to go along with four kills.

Senior setter Carly Lauch had team-highs in assists (32) and aces (6).

The Jaguars advance to Tuesday's district semifinal where they take on Olmsted Falls, who defeated Avon Lake earlier on Wednesday. The Jags and Bulldogs will start at 6 p.m. at Midview High School.

SOCCER HAS STRONG SEASON The soccer team ended its season last night as the Jaguars fell 5-0 to Brecksville in the sectional final. The loss capped an outstanding season for SJA as they finished 10-5-3 on the season. The 10 wins this season were more than the last two seasons combined and the Jaguars will return a strong core next year when they hope to improve upon their success in 2016.

Tickets are $25 and will be available at the door. All proceeds will benefit the Jaguar Swim and Dive team.
