Pride Bowl Was Evening of Spirited Fun Once again, Juniors and Seniors defeated the lowerclasswomen yesterday in the annual Pride Bowl flag football game but it was competitive. The upperclasswomen went on to be defeated by the faculty team! The games were followed by the popular cookout and bonfire, complete with s'mores, sponsored by the Fathers' Club and Mothers' Club.

Founders' Day Mass Honors Congregation of St. Joseph Anniversary Students, faculty, staff, family and friends gathered for a Founders' Day Mass on Thursday to celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the Congregation of St. Joseph in Le Puy, France in 1650. Fr. Ryan J. Mann from St. Charles Borromeo presided.

Student Spotlight

More than 366 years ago, six Sisters met in a small kitchen in Le Puy to discuss helping young women. These Sisters shared a common desire to grow in their love of God and serve the unmet needs of the desperately poor people in their community, in the city around them, whom they came to call their "dear neighbors."

Name: Narupa Dabydeen '17 Accomplishments: Narupa is a dedicated volunteer in communities near and far. She enjoys serving meals with SJA at local churches so much that she regularly serves dinner at St. Augustine on her own time. She has also gone to Higuey, Dominican Republic (DR) for a week the last two summers, where she did home construction projects and taught Vacation Bible School.

Narupa notes about the DR, "From one year to the next, I witnessed many houses going from dull, blocks of concrete to beautiful and colorful homes and saw five new homes built from scratch that were not there the previous year." This past summer, she gave some families their first look at their new homes.

"Somehow we were able to communicate and make an unforgettable memory. This heartwarming experience taught me that love has no limits."

Narupa now knows that she "can feel the love of service" anywhere.

Activities & Interests: Narupa is a member of the cross country and track teams.

Ms. Mueller and Ms. Emmerich shared their experiences traveling to that kitchen and how that experience has deepened their relationship with God and others.

Today, the Congregation has grown to more than 500 vowed women, all of whom are dedicated to the love of God and neighbor, committed to sharing life together in community and missioned to be a unifying presence wherever they live and minister.

We wish all the Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph locally and around the globe a Happy Founders' Day! We are eternally grateful for their continued support and inspiration.

Open House Sunday for Prospective Students Do you have friends or family members who want to learn more about all the wonderful things students are experiencing at the Academy? Our annual Fall Open House for prospective students is a great way to explore all that is new at SJA. Enjoy a guided tour to learn about our new spaces, take a stroll around the campus, or meet our faculty and coaches.

Open House is this Sunday from 1-4 p.m. Our Paw Prints Store will also be open during those hours.

Nazareth Library Receives 2016 State "Outstanding Individual Library" Award The Ohio Educational Library Media Association (OELMA) held its 2016 award presentation last night at the OELMA Annual Conference in Columbus, Ohio, formally honoring the winners named this summer. Nazareth Library Chair Rebecca Synk, Instructional Librarian Megan Fowler and Library Assistant Lou Ann Wensink were there to receive the award for Outstanding Individual Library.

Our library is the only one in the state to receive this honor, which recognizes an exceptional building-level library program, its integration into the school's curriculum and its ability to connect with the needs of the school's wide array of

learners. Bravo!

Her volunteer work includes Fairview Hospital, Refugee Response (as a tutor), Arrupe Summer Program and many others.

While her future plans are open, Narupa wants to spend her life helping others. She will apply to the United States Naval Academy in hopes of becoming a Marine officer.

Through Nazareth Library's vast resources, students are able to conduct research and take classes that would not have been possible a few years ago. Recently Mrs. Synk and Mrs. Fowler taught independent study classes where students partner with professional archivists to analyze historical documents; spearheaded research units that give students database L-R: Mrs. Rebecca Synk, Mrs. Meagan Fowler, Mrs. Lou Ann Wensink usage experience; and provided resources like Ebooks and college level databases. They also implemented the "Sursum Libros" reading program that encourages and rewards students for reading for enjoyment.

Principal Jeff Sutliff notes, "Our librarians' desire to promote exploration and student inquiry put them at the forefront of academic initiatives that keep the Academy vibrant. We couldn't be prouder."

'Weaving One Heart' at La Convencion Hispana A dozen SJA students were among the volunteers at the Hispanic Roundtable's La Convencion Hispana on October 7 and 8 at Max Hayes High School in Cleveland. The convention offered a free assembly providing education, empowerment, health and workforce development resource for northeast Ohio's Latino community.

SJA students greeted attendees throughout the convention, provided directions and distributed materials. They truly enjoyed communicating with attendees. For Corinne Howery '19, "The most memorable part of the event was being able to interact with people who did not know English; I was able to have introduction conversations. Being able to use the language outside of class and actually answer questions without having to think about how or what to say was mind blowing."

Book Club Celebrates Teen Read Week with Bookémon Contest This week the Book Club celebrated National Teen Read Week with a "Bookémon" contest in which students try to locate faculty pictures (Bookémons) hidden in books throughout the school.

Points were earned for captures for Team Purple (classes of 2017 and 2020) or Gold (classes of 2018 and 2019) and were entered into a raffle for each one caught. The entire student body enjoyed quiet reading time on Wednesday, while enjoying treats.

Teen Read Week™ is a national adolescent literacy initiative created by the Young Adult Library Services Association. Its purpose is to encourage teens to be regular readers and library users.

Students Immerse Themselves in Latin Masses Throughout the last two weeks, several SJA students and their families attended Latin mass with Latin teacher

Hannah Sanders at St. Stephen and Immaculate Conception Churches. Hannah notes, "Participating in Latin mass is one of the rare opportunities for people to hear the Latin language spoken. The Church still uses Latin as its primary language."

Lexie Smith '20, who went to mass at St. Stephen, said "The church was beautiful, I loved the service. I learned five new words in Latin, and I knew the Pater Noster when it was spoken."

Ms. Sanders reminds us that Latin masses are open to everyone and are offered at St. Rocco as well. "I encourage students who want to be more globally-minded to try new things like this all the time so they can further their understanding of the Latin language."

Grand Reunion Weekend Unites Alumnae Classmates More than 200 graduates spanning seven decades from 1941 to 2011 gathered at SJA this past weekend to celebrate the Grand Reunion. These women, truly illustrating our rich history, traveled from more than 18 states to renew bonds of friendship and share memories of SJA. Special congrats to the Class of 1966 for celebrating 50 years!

Sports Highlights RECORD-BREAKING TENNIS SEASON COMES TO AN END The record-breaking tennis season came to a close on Thursday as the doubles team of Senior Hannah Schuette and Freshman Melissa Martin competed in the district tournament. It marked our first tennis appearance in the district tournament in recent history. The duo played well but fell to a team from Mayfield High School 6-2, 6-4. That capped the season, where they won a school-record 16 matches while also capturing a NEOTA league title.

VOLLEYBALL ENTERS POSTSEASON AS TOP SEED The defending district-champion volleyball team earned the top seed in the upcoming Midview district tournament. The Jaguars ended the regular season with a mark of 17-5 with all five losses coming to state-ranked teams. SJA ended their regular season with a program-wide sweep of Eastlake North on Wednesday. The JV Jags finished their season at 16-4 while the freshman team ends their regular season on Saturday at the Strongsville tournament. The Freshman Jags are currently 13-1.

CROSS COUNTRY HAS SOLID PERFORMANCE IN MICHIGAN The cross country team headed north of the border (Michigan, not Canada) on Saturday to compete in the huge Portage Invitational race. The Jaguars varsity team ran well and finished 11th out of 45 teams. The JV team however had great performances as 44 of the 55 JV runners competing had personal records or season bests. Cecilia Wagner '18, Liz Renner 17, Rachel Mancuso '19 and Jessica Schuler '17 were named athletes of the meet!

SOCCER HEADS INTO POSTSEASON PLAY The Varsity soccer team wrapped up its regular season on Thursday with a scoreless tie against Medina Highland. The Jaguars finished the regular season at 9-4-3. The nine wins for the program surpasses their win total from the previous two seasons combined. SJA will face off against rival Lakewood in the opening round of the sectional tournament on Monday. That game will be played at 7 p.m. at Saint Ignatius High School.
