Health Science Honors Students Gain Hands-On

Experience Today, Health Science Honors Program students attended the Cuyahoga Community College Westshore Science Labs in Westlake. Health Science Honors Program Coordinator Mr. Cory Otto stated, "These types of field trips are designed to expose students to the path they can take to become a health care professional."

On the visit, students experienced hands-on activities, including interacting with Stan, the Human Patient Simulator, a lifelike, anatomically correct, computer driven mannequin with physiologic responses that mimic real patients; utilizing technology gadgets and wearable devices; physiological factors influencing a person's electrocardiogram (ECG), including the use of the ECG monitor and chemistry.

Students also listened to a speaker from the college who shared the admission process for applying to the nursing program. "I really enjoyed the nursing lab because that's the field I am interested in. It was fascinating to be working in a real hands-on scenario," said Julia Patterson '19.

Name: Julie Fioritto '17 Accomplishments: After being in the limelight, Julie decided to take on the challenge of being student director for the Academy's fall play, Play On! "It was an amazing experience to be able to work with such a talented group of actors. The entire cast really became close throughout the show," said Julie. She began planning for Play On with Drama Director Ms. Anne Chriszt at the beginning of the school year.

Julie has worked on other shows with Ms. Anne Chriszt including two summer camps at Huntington Theater last summer, Musical Theater summer camp and our recent musical, Little Shop of Horrors.

Activities & Interests: Julie has been dancing with Arlene Cassara Dance and Theater Center in North Olmsted since she was five.

At SJA, she is involved with Show Choir, is the CoPresident of D-Song and is the President of the Dance Team, where she plans their events and choreographs the dances the team performs at

Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice

Last week, students interested in social justice attended the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice, the largest Catholic social justice conference in the United States. "We had an incredible time learning, worshiping, praying, working and advocating for those on the margins," said CORE Ministry teacher Miss Pungitore. Students attended sessions concerning factory farming, gender issues, the impact of climate change on refugee populations and the interception of race and politics.

They met with local representatives on Capitol Hill and advocated for a fair and just immigration reform that favors families and recognizes the dignity of every person. They also advocated for a reform to our criminal justice system that sees people as more than a mistake they have made in the past.

"My favorite session was titled 'A Prescription for the People: Making Medicines for Patients, Not Profits.' The speaker for this session was a professor from Indiana University McKinney School of Law. The professor spoke to us about the monopoly on prescription drugs. People living in third world countries, as well as our own country, are not able to afford medication, which could potentially save their lives, because of the exponentially high prices. This breakout session was intriguing to me because I plan on pursuing a career in medicine," shared Riley Justice '17.

Two Students Participate in OMEA District Honors Band Two instrumental music students participated in the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) District IV and VII Honors Bands. Students were selected from bands across northern Ohio. The purpose of the Honors Ensemble Festival is to provide an exceptional musical experience for a

pep rallies and basketball games.

select group of high school band students. The Academy was represented by Elizabeth (Liz) Forrey '17 performing on timpani and mallets and Lydia Rozic '18 on tuba.

Students rehearsed together for two days The 2016 OMEA District IV and VII before the concert on Saturday at Waetjen Honors Bands Auditorium at Cleveland State University. Liz Forrey '17 stated this about the experience: "My biggest takeaway from Honors Band was confidence. Most people are nervous in front of people they don't know, especially with a certain type of presentation. Playing music is a presentation and people can easily get nervous to play well or to play at all because they don't want to be criticized for their music. Honors Band took away that fear because it forced you to put yourself out there." Bravo, Liz and Lydia, on a job well done!

Physical Science Puts Knowledge into Practice Physical Science covers a wide range of topics, including motion, forces, energy and waves. Last week, students took a field trip to the Great Lakes Science Center to explore these concepts further.

They visited specific activity stations and described how they worked using the content knowledge developed in the course. This allowed students to experience the topics in a hands-on way that would be very difficult within the walls of the classroom. In one activity Physical Science students at the Great station, students were able to drop two Lakes Science Center feathers, one in a vacuum and one in standard air pressure. They were able to see how the motion of the feathers differs when the force of air resistance is eliminated.

Students attended a presentation called "Energize It!" In this presentation, different forms of energy and energy transformations were demonstrated. This presentation was beneficial, as the presenter asked the students to identify the forms of energy present in the transformations, reinforcing content learned in class. The students were able to sense the energy transformations that included different forms such as thermal, chemical, light and sound. "I really enjoyed going to the Science Center because I was able to see what we are learning in the classroom in real-life scenarios. Everything I learned was reinforced through this field trip, especially during the presentation about energy," said Caroline Petters '20.
