Women's Leadership Symposium Inspires and Educates Students On Wednesday, students gathered for a day filled with inspiring stories and personalized guidance at the school's 10th Annual Women's Leadership Symposium - an event designed to expose students to female leaders, many of whom are alumnae.

Rear Admiral June E. Ryan P '20 and Maggie Sullivan speaker, U.S. Coast Guard '17 Rear Admiral June E. Ryan, mother of Aisling Ryan '20. Admiral Ryan is senior Coast Guard commander for the five Great Lakes and the Saint Lawrence Seaway - an area that encompasses eight states and a 1,500 mile international border. Her Coast Guard career includes several distinctions, including being the first prior-enlisted woman to be promoted to flag rank and serving as the Military Aide to the President, only the third woman in U.S. history to do so. Name: Claudia Stephens '18 Accomplishments: Last week, Claudia sang the National Anthem at the opening ceremonies for the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services Veterans Career Expo at Quicken Loans Arena. Now in its 6th year, the expo features 120 employers and helps 600 veterans find job training and employment.

Claudia has sung at the expo for the past four years.

Claudia shared, "I have pride in our country and am impressed that veterans put their lives on the line for us.

This is a small thing I can do to honor them." Josh Collins, Veteran Workforce Specialist and expo organizer notes, "She does an amazing job."

Activities & Interests: Claudia plays both the violin and piano, is an Ambassador and plays soccer. She is very active in Model United Nations (UN), as she is one of the students who helped re-start the SJA club in 2015. Her work with Model UN has led her to consider pursuing broadcasting and international relations in college.

Admiral Ryan's message to students was to not be afraid to take risks. She stated her life mantra is: "Oh what the heck, go for it anyway!" She stated the P-O-W-E-R of a Jaguar includes these characteristics: using Positive affirmative phrases, Optimism, the power of We, Energy and Enthusiasm and Reward. Admiral Ryan stated, "Saint Joseph Academy is like a redwood tree.

The Academy weaves common interests together with each other, with alumnae, with the community, so you are a force to be reckoned with."

In addition to the keynote address, more than 50 professional women spoke with students in Career Breakout Sessions. They brought with them a distinctive perspective on how they achieved their goals, sharing real-life and practical advice on potential careers. The speakers gave advice to expose students to various careers in the arts, education, health sciences, engineering, law, business and more before attending college. There was also an interactive panel discussion "Leadership in Action: Service" attended by all students. This year's panelists were Naila Paul, Director of Education at The Refugee Response and Mrs. Nancy Zetts Roach '89, educator at the International Newcomers Academy at Thomas Jefferson School.

The key benefit of the panel discussion was for students to have the opportunity to ask questions and learn from experts who are immersed in local organizations which foster unity among immigrants in the Cleveland community in their daily work. For example, students in Mrs. Roach's first grade class speak several different languages. "We can weave one heart" with our international dear neighbors here in Cleveland.

ECOS Sponsored - No Trash Lunch Week Environmental Concern of Students (ECOS), instituted No Trash Lunch Week, created last year by the ECOS Club, moderated by English teacher, Mrs. Michelle Kelly-Flanagan.

The idea behind the initiative is to provide an awareness of the volume of trash generated each day at lunch time. The measurements were taken of the amount of trash produced by each class in the dining hall.

ECOS students involved with the project are Annie Wolodzko '17, Ingrid Cheung '18, Tiffany Cheung '20, Abby Votaw '18, Natalie Quellos '18, Myckal Bean '18, Sivven Oung '19 and Clare Helmer '17.

ECOS worked with two other clubs for this year's initiative. Model United Nations (UN) collected data from the lunch haul to further their research project coached

by Social Studies teacher, Ms. Lisa Lesh. LEXUS Eco-Challenge, moderated by Science teacher, Mrs. Mary Ellen Scott '76, gathered evidence for their research development. At the end of the day, the no trash initiative was a collaborative effort from behind the scenes, but students are hopeful to make an impact with their peers.

Fun Facts: CSU and the Cleveland Metropolitan School District's new Campus International School incorporates programs from the International Baccalaureate Primary Programme and the Middle Years Programme (which is the program that SJA is working towards accreditation in). csuohio.edu

The respective Model UN and LEXUS teams gathered data for two weeks--one week before the competition and one week after the competition. It is their hope the data will shape trends in the actions of the community.

The class with the least amount of generated trash earned Paws for Pride points.

Thus, the no trash initiative was fuel for the students' fire. Juniors created 36.62 lbs. of trash, Sophomores made 37.96 lbs. of trash, Seniors 40.11 produced lbs. of trash and the Freshman ended the week with 59.11 lbs. of trash.

Nine Jaguars Sign NCAA National Letters of Intent!

Nine outstanding Jaguar student-athlete seniors signed NCAA National Letters of Intent on Wednesday. Four Jaguars signed to different colleges and universities for crew: Seniors Catherine Gallagher and Maxine McGuire will both continue their academic and athletic careers at Canisius College, Emma Gassman '17 committed to Michigan State University, and Molly Miller '17 will head to Duquesne University to participate in their crew programs.

For other sports, Maddie Kimble '17 will be attending the University of Maine for their softball program, Mackenzie Milligan '17 committed to Baldwin Wallace University softball, Isabelle Robertson '17 will head to Belmont Abbey College to participate in their golf program, Sydnie Whitaker '17 will continue her athletic and academic career at Gannon University by participating in their softball program and Morgan Schauer '17 will be playing hockey at Robert Morris University.

"It has always been my goal to play hockey in college," said Morgan Schauer.

"Robert Morris University gave me the opportunity to live out my dream and also receive a great education. I plan to major in Early Childhood Education and History. After school I would like to continue to work with girls' hockey programs at the youth and collegiate levels in addition to teaching kindergarten in an inner city school."

Congratulations to these student-athletes for their dedication in the classroom and in their respective sports!

Sports Highlights Volleyball Advances to Final Four Playing in the regional final for the first time in school history, the Jaguars had to battle a tough opponent but prevailed with a 25-20, 25-15, 20-25, 25-22 victory over Toledo Notre Dame Academy at Norwalk HS. The victory sent the Jaguars to Thursday's Division I state semifinal match against Brecksville-Broadview Heights. It was the Academy's first-ever appearance in the Final Four.

After knocking off eight-time state champions from Toledo St. Ursula in the regional semifinals, the Jaguars continued their amazing run with an all-around team effort that has been the calling card for the Jaguars over the last two seasons.

"We are a talented team that plays Regional win really well together," said Head Coach Volleyball Ms. Kate Latkovic. "Every single player on our roster contributes something that is important to our team success. Some may play more than others, but they all serve a role that they are really good at. It's a great group and I'm so happy for them and our program."

Cross Country Races to the State Meet The cross country program had a record-setting season in 2016. Under the direction of Head Coach Mr. Fred Kieser, the Jaguars had a school-record 65 girls participate in the program. They were led by 21 Seniors. This team had success throughout the regular season, but they were at their best in the postseason.

The Jaguars were the Division I district runnerup at Willoughby South which qualified them for the regional meet. At the regional meet in Boardman, the Jaguars finished as the runnerup in a crowded group of talented teams. On Annie Allen '20 on the State Saturday, November 5 at National Trail Cross Country meet podium Raceway in Hebron, Ohio, the Jaguars made a team appearance at the state cross country meet for the first time since 2008.

The Jaguars finished in 11th place out of 20 teams and were led by Annie Allen '20 who finished up her outstanding first year as she earned All-Ohio Honors with her 16th place finish in a personal best time of 18:17.20. Sydney Seymour '18 came in 36th in 18:49.60 to finish second for the Jaguars. Olivia Battistoni '17 ran a personal best in her final meet and was 91st at 19:39.50. Amanda Keim '20 came in at 20:11.90 while Caitlyn Walsh '18 had a personal-best of 20:17.10.

Maggie Wagner '17 and Daniella Saul '17 also ran in their final Jaguar race.
