Certain gestures involving fans have taken on meaning and can send a message to another, therefore taking on a type of language of its own," shared Mr. Sauerwein. "In Spanish class, we do not just learn about the Spanish language. We also learn about the Spanish culture. By coming into the Makerspace and creating our own abanico, we are incorporating what we are learning about the language, culture and tying in engineering, which is a really neat aspect of this project," shared Jadalise Pacheco '18.

English Students Gain Real World Experience from Leader in Law

Students in "Women Leading in the 21st Century" with speaker Judge Francine Goldberg

This week, students in English teacher Mrs. Paula Conti's "Women Leading in the 21st Century" class listened to speaker Judge Francine Goldberg. The class highlights women leaders through the ages as well as contributions they have made to society.

For 23 years, Judge Goldberg served as the Assistant Cuyahoga County Prosecutor, held the position of Director of Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force from 2008-2011 and was on the following units: Major Trial Unit, Elder Abuse and Exploitation Unit, Cold Case Unit and Community Prosecution Unit, City of Cleveland, First and Second Police Districts. She stated the importance of finding a mentor to help guide individuals through their professional lives. "For me, my mentor was Stephanie Tubbs-Jones, the first African-American prosecutor in Ohio and the first African-American woman prosecutor in a major U.S. city. Stephanie made me get outside of my comfort zone and helped me empathized with others." Judge Goldberg also stated that she was "passionate about leaving the prosecutor's office to protect the most vulnerable-children. Victims made me a much more compassionate person, prosecutor and judge."

School: Purdue University Location: West Lafayette, IN (6 hours from Cleveland) Small city Enrollment: 32,000 undergraduates Strongest Programs: Engineering, Business Management and Pharmacy Fun Facts: Purdue's big rivalry is with Indiana University. The annual competition is known as the Old Oaken Bucket and the winner adds a link to a chain in either the shape of an "I" or an "P." purdue.edu

While speaking to the class, Judge Goldberg shared a quote from Oprah Winfrey's commencement speech from Howard University that inspires her: "Your calling isn't something that somebody can tell you about. It's what you feel. It's a part of your life force. It is the thing that gives you juice. The thing that are you supposed to do. And nobody can tell you what that is. You know it inside yourself." Judge Goldberg stated that she had always been drawn to public service. "It is incredibly important to be passionate about something you want to have as a career. Don't ever be afraid about anything that you want to accomplish. Always put yourself out there," shared Judge Goldberg.
