"The Wellness Fair is an important event for

students to learn about a variety of ways to live a healthy lifestyle and important Accomplishments: LookUp To Cleveland is a program that connects high school students in the Greater Cleveland area to people, places and projects moving it forward while developing leadership skills and learning how they can impact their communities. The prestigious program only accepts two high school students per school into this program per year and Ingrid Cheung '18 was selected as one of two for this year.

"My biggest takeaway from the program is learning more about the city I live in and more about myself.

Even though the program stresses the importance of fixing issues in our city, the program also stresses how Cleveland has worked to overcome those every time.

We have not solved every issue, but we are getting there. Additionally, Effective Leadership Academy has also taught us leadership and networking skills, which have helped cement my understanding of my own personality and abilities," shared Ingrid.

The Academy Chorale Receives Highest Rating at District Event The Academy Chorale, the acclaimed a capella ensemble, received a Superior Rating at the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) District 4 Adjudicated Event. This is the highest rating and qualifies them to go to the State Large Group Competition!

Students Host Refugee Awareness Event Last Friday, students hosted a Refugee Awareness Event at Saint Joseph Academy.

"The purpose of this event was to educate our community on a topic that many misunderstand. It was also to spark a desire in our peers to work with and advocate for this group that is in dire need of our help," stated Grace Davis '17.

The event was set up with poster boards and a refugee tent. Students then discussed Islam and its misconceptions in the United States, growing up in a refugee camp and getting involved in working with refugees in the community.

Activities & Interests: Ingrid volunteers at Fairview Hospital and the used-book sale at the Cleveland Public Library. At Saint Joseph Academy, she is the Vice President of the Chinese Club, an editor of the yearbook, an active member of Environmental Concern of Students (ECOS), a member of the Health Science Honors Program and Health Care Professional Affinity Community (HPAC). Ingrid is also an Academy Ambassador, peer tutor, a member of Chess Club, Math Club, Latin Club and Cancer Awareness Club.

Esther Ngemba '18 stated: "I was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo and in 2006, my family was forced to become refugees because of the war. We lived in Uganda in a refugee camp for five years; I thought those were the worst years of my life, but now I know those years were the best and the most formative. They made me who I am today."

Local refugee organizations needing support are Catholic Charities Migrant and Refugee Services, Refugee Response, Advocates For Peace and Change. "It is important to show your support for refugees through positive interactions and advocacy. Whether it is through posts on social media or making a meal for a refugee family, being kind and understanding to those who have struggled as refugees have is essential to creating a welcoming community," shared Grace Davis '17.

One Act Festival Medalists Last weekend, students competed in the Cleveland Theater Conference One Act Festival at John Carroll University. Nicole Baddour '19, Sarah Barendt '20, Jane Roche '19, Abby Bentley '17, Hannah Glaser '18 and Lauren Buck '20 performed the one act play "Orientation." Jane Roche '19 won Best Stage Presence, Nicole Baddour '19 won a silver medal and Hannah Glaser '18 won a gold medal. Congratulations, ladies, on a wonderful performance!

Junior Parents: Letters for Kairos Retreatants Due April 4 Help your daughter get the most out of her Kairos Retreat on April 6, 7 and 8 by praying for her and writing a letter expressing how much she means to you. Letters from other family members are welcomed as well.

Flute Trio Awarded Prestigious Honor The Cleveland Chamber Music Society held its annual youth chamber competition on last weekend. This prestigious competition was adjudicated by retired members of the Cleveland Orchestra. The competition featured instrumental ensembles from a number of local high schools including Saint Joseph Academy.

The Saint Joseph Academy Flute Trio was awarded third place. The trio, comprised of Kala Seeholzer-Siebert '17, Genevieve Kramer '19 and Abigail Helmer '19 received a $25 Barnes & Noble gift card, $100 scholarship towards the Western Reserve Chamber Festival, tickets to upcoming Cleveland Chamber Music Society performances and a certificate of achievement. Congratulations, ladies!

KeyBank's International Women's Day Event Last week, four Juniors (Joslyn Muniz, Jadalise Pacheco, Lily Mayle and Juli Howe) participated in KeyBank's International Women's Day Event. Students were one of six high schools asked to showcase what they are learning in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics. The audience was nearly 200 KeyBank employees and employees of their client, Accenture.

"It was a wonderful opportunity to highlight the robot I built at Saint Joseph Academy and explain how I built it to the KeyBank employees," shared Juli Howe '18.

Save the Date for Our Spring Musical: Songs For a New World Join Saint Joseph Academy for a theatrical song cycle exploring the moment of decision! The Spring musical presentation of Songs For a New World will be performed April 6, 7 and 8 at 7:30 p.m. and a matinee on April 9 at 2:30 p.m.

Tickets are $12 for reserved seats, $10 for general admission and $5 for students and seniors.

Join Us for An Evening of Spiritual Reflection Mothers, please join us for an evening of prayerful conversation and camaraderie. Our annual "An Evening of Reflection for Women" takes place on Monday, April 10 and gathers a wonderful group of women together to share their insights, unique experiences and real life questions about spirituality and faith. Friends are welcome.

Get a Jump Start on Summer Reading 2017 This year's summer reading theme will explore the idea of empathetic justice. According to the "Character of a Saint Joseph Graduate," a student who lives a life of empathetic justice is "devoted to doing justice with compassion and respect for others, she works for systemic change to bring about global equality." It is a goal of Saint Joseph Academy to guide students to becoming women of empathy who see the world through the eyes of others. Studies have shown that reading helps foster emotional intelligence and builds empathy, goals that pair well with the theme of empathetic justice.

To nurture this characteristic, each student will choose one book from this list of titles. The list includes titles at various reading levels, genres and an array of topics to meet the needs and interests of the student population. The topics of justice and injustice can be sensitive in nature, therefore many of the books deal with difficult and complex problems; parents and guardians are invited to read along with their student. Sports Highlights Rugby Opens Season in Nashville The defending rugby national champions opened up their 2017 season this past weekend at the Nash Bash Tournament in Nashville, Tennessee.

The Varsity and teams each played three games in unseasonably cold conditions. Results from the tournament are below.

Basketball and Swimming Banquet: Tuesday, March 21 Registration is now open for the annual end of season banquets for basketball and swimming. The banquet will take place on Tuesday, March 21 in the Dining Hall at Saint Joseph Academy. The reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. with dinner followed by the program, which begins at 6 p.m.

Basketball and swimming student-athletes are free of charge and are encouraged to attend.
