Pandemics." For the first part of the class, students went through the basics of epidemics and pathogens that cause illness and a few major infectious diseases. The diseases were

Malaria, Tuberculosis, Enterovirus D68, Ebola, H1N1 Type A Influenza (swine flu) and HIV/AIDS. During the class, students had three "patients" all who interacted with each other and had one of the six infectious diseases. Each patient read aloud their symptoms and described what they had done the past few weeks. Students then used descriptions of each pathogen and attempted to figure out what infectious disease each patient had.

"I loved having the opportunity to attempt to solve the puzzle of which disease each patient had. I already had an interest in infectious diseases and this class strengthened my interest. Going on this field trip showed me what it is like to work

Name: Madison (Maddy) Kelly '20 Accomplishments: Maddy Kelly '20 came into her first high school swim season and set six school records, won Sectional and District titles, and became the first SJA swimmer to qualify to the State meet under the current Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) format. Way to go, Maddy!

At the State meet, Maddy competed in the 50 freestyle preliminaries and also qualified for the consolation finals of the 100 backstroke after her 13th place finish in the preliminaries with a time of 57.41. She was 5th seed in the consolation final but swam a great race to win

in infectious diseases and strengthened my interest in a health field that involves similar problem solving as we did during the class," shared Grace Ducat '19.

English Students Inspired by Alumna Leader This week, students in English teacher Mrs. Paula Conti's "Women Leading in the 21st Century" class met with speaker Beth Sebesta Piper '78. Beth is a Talent Development Leader, International Tax and Transfer Pricing, for Deloitte in Chicago, where she designs corporate training programs for the global company.

She gave advice to the students on a wide range of topics, including her professional journey, the importance of education, leadership in the workplace, finding your passion and achieving your goals.

"We all have to find that place of passion," shared Beth Sebesta Piper '78.

Senior Places Sixth in State "Poetry Out Loud" Competition

Mary Simmons '17 competed at the State Competition in the "Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest" at the McConnell Arts Center in Worthington, Ohio. She placed sixth in the entire state during the State Competition. Mary memorized and recited these three poems: Emily Dickinson's "I felt a Funeral, in my Brain," Edgar Allan Poe's "Annabel Lee" and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's "Psalm of Life."

the consolation final, which placed her 9th overall in the event, in a time of 56.54.

This came after she set a sectional record to win the 50 freestyle at sectionals and also won the district meet in the 50 freestyle.

"The most exciting part about the swimming season was going to all the meets and participating in relays. The most rewarding part of swimming at States was being able to represent Saint Joseph Academy at their first State meet in school history," stated Maddy Kelly '20.

Activities & Interests: Maddy is a member of Crew, and she also enjoys watching Netflix, cooking and listening to music.

Mary Simmons '17

"My favorite part of the competition was the wonderful camaraderie I shared with the other students performing. We all came from different schools, backgrounds and even culture in some cases, but we were able to all relate through the art of poetry. I felt instantly connected to these other students through our shared love of poetry and our desire to share these important words with the audience," stated Mary Simmons '17.

Art Students Create Portraits for St. Baldrick's Foundation Families Throughout the past few weeks, seven AP Art, Graphic Design III and National Art Honors Society students volunteered to create portraits of children who have been battling cancer. On Friday, the portraits were presented to the children's families during the St. Baldrick's Foundation fundraiser at St. Mark's School.

Ms. Tammy Sparks and Mrs. Beth Pleban worked with the student-artists to develop their portraits based on information about the child, his or her cancer journey, and various photographs provided by the family.

"My grandma was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer. She always loved when people would make thoughtful gifts for her," said Kiara Hoefsmit '18. "I wanted to do something that would honor my grandmother and realized that this was something that I could do in her memory while at the same time utilizing my artistic abilities."

"Violins of Hope" Concert On Wednesday, Freshmen students attended the "Violins of Hope" concert at the Maltz Performing Arts Center at The Temple Tifereth Israel at Case Western Reserve University, with conductor Brett

Mitchell and The Cleveland Orchestra.

The "Violins of Hope" educational concert featured both music and theater. Through music and spoken dialogue, artists explored the critical roles music played in the lives of Jewish people before, during and after the Holocaust.

Freshmen students at the The program featured Prokofiev's Overture on Violins of Hope concert Hebrew Themes, the Allegro Molto from Shostakovich's Chamber Symphony; Bloch's Simchas Torah, Kol Nidrei, three pieces from Schindler's List by John Williams and Rossini's Overture to The Silken Ladder.

"I enjoyed this performance. History and music combined can change your perspective on their impact in our lives," shared Lauren Kaleta '20.

Tennis Team Fundraiser at Chipotle The Jaguar tennis team is hosting a fundraiser on Monday, March 13 from 5-9 p.m. at Chipotle (21029 Center Ridge Rd., Fairview Park,44126). Purchase a burrito and 50% of the proceeds will be donated to the tennis team.

Promoting and Developing Excellence in Children: Program Offered at River's Edge Cleveland What key ingredients will allow your kids to succeed? What does research indicate parents can do to cultivate hard-working, resilient children capable of persisting and coping with the demands of the 21st Century world?

Promoting and Developing Excellence in Children is a workshop that explores the essential elements of the Habit of Excellence. This workshop, taught by Dr. David Udelf and Andy Pohl, teaches parents how to facilitate the development of critical life skills that will allow their children to maximize their potential. Sports Highlights Basketball and Swimming Banquet: Tuesday, March 21 Registration is now open for the annual end of season banquets for basketball and swimming. The banquet will take place on Tuesday, March 21 in the Dining Hall at Saint Joseph Academy. The reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. with dinner followed by the program, which begins at 6 p.m.

Basketball and swimming student-athletes are free of charge and are encouraged to attend. Guests are $18. Individual team banquets will follow after dinner. Please click here to register.
