Team Enerjagers Midwest Winners in Lexus Eco Challenge! Congratulations to Team Enerjagers, selected as one of the winning teams in this year's Lexus Eco Challenge: Air & Climate! Six students on the team will share the $9,000 prize to promote sustainability. The Enerjagers worked to raise awareness to help stop global warming and promote alternate energy options. "My favorite part about being a member of Team Enerjagers is working with Mrs. Mary Ellen Foley Scott '76 and working on House Bill 554, which addresses renewable energy and energy efficiency," shared Esther Ngemba '18.

Freshmen: PreACT Results Are In
February 1
In mid-October, the Class of 2020 participated in our school testing day by taking the PreACT assessment. The PreACT, a Sophomore multiplechoice assessment, is patterned after the ACT, using the same types of test questions, score scale and format. It is designed to model the ACT test experience, providing students with the ultimate preparation and practice. PreACT scores are reported on the same 1-36 scale as the ACT, but it includes fewer questions than the ACT.

As with all student testing, this data is beneficial for our continuous school improvement. The PreACT results have arrived and meetings have been scheduled with Freshmen homerooms during activity periods to help your daughter interpret and review her score report. Health Science Honors Program Garners Life Experience from Veterinarian and SJA Alumna On Wednesday, the Health Science Honors Program had guest speaker Dr. Emily Roach '02 speaking to current students about her journey to becoming a veterinarian. Students were able to listen to the heart, teeth, stomach and eyes of Sloopy the basset hound, who had a heart murmur, and compared him to Nanny the goat. Dr. Emily Roach '02
"The biggest surprise was seeing the wide variety examining Sloopy's teeth of subject areas veterinarians have to take on in order to do their job. Although unexpected circumstances sometimes make life unpredictable, Dr. Roach shared that the job is very rewarding and she wouldn't trade it for the world," shared Jessa Nauman '18.
Math Classes Take Field Trip to See Hidden Figures On Wednesday, AP Calculus, Statistics, Honors Pre-Calculus classes and the Math Club took a field trip to see the blockbuster film Hidden Figures. The true story is based on author Margot Lee Shetterly's book Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race.
Name: Jonae Williams '17 Accomplishments: Jonae is a member of the Unity Club, and Math teacher and Unity Club moderator Mrs. Suzanne Smiley-Rozic offered members the opportunity to attend an event where Debby Irving, author of Waking Up White, discussed writing her book. With time left at the end of the event for questions, Jonae asked one. "I decided to ask her opinion on technology and its prevalence to racism and discrimination today. I received a standing ovation," said Jonae Williams '17. Afterward, President and CEO of the Greater Cleveland Film Commission, Mr. Ivan Schwarz, got in touch with President Mrs. Mary Ann Corrigan-Davis '71. He asked about my plans for the future. It was both nervewracking and amazing at the same time," said Jonae. I learned a valuable lesson from this experience: Always show your best side, because you never know who is watching and what opportunities will arise," stated Jonae. Unity Club Hosts Lock-In Last weekend, the Unity Club held the 12th Annual Unity Club Lock-In, where 24 students spent the night at SJA. The Unity Club's primary goals are to fight racism, eliminate prejudice, celebrate diversity and educate the community. Click here to read more.

John Carroll University Young Writers Workshop The John Carroll University (JCU) Young Writers Workshop is a week-long summer workshop/camp experience on the campus of JCU, where students in grades 8-12 have the opportunity to participate in an immersive writing experience that provides an introduction to the art and craft of poetry, short fiction and creative nonfiction. Participants will study with acclaimed professors--poet Dr. Philip Metres, poet Danny Caine, M.F.A and fiction writer Lydia Munnell, M.F.A. Untangled Presentation: Guiding Teenage Girls Through the Seven Transitions into Adulthood Please join the New York Times bestselling author Dr. Lisa Damour, Ph.D., on Thursday, February 2 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Saint Joseph Academy in the Auditorium for a special parent presentation entitled "Untangled: Guiding Teenage Girls Through the Seven Transitions in Adulthood." Dr. Damour's discussion will highlight why confusing and challenging teenage behavior is often predictable and normal, developmental transitions that turn girls into grown-ups and how to form a happier, healthier relationship with your daughter.

Save the Date: Father Daughter Dance, March 4 Celebrate that special bond between fathers and daughters on Saturday, March 4, at the annual Father/Daughter Dance. The dance is open to all grade levels and will be held at Brennan's Party Center, 13000 Triskett Road from 6-11 p.m. The evening includes dinner, dessert and beverages. Entertainment will be provided by a DJ, and there will be a photo booth to preserve the night's memories. Ticket information will be available soon. Sports Highlights Basketball The Jaguars participated in the first girls' game in the history of the 15th Annual Flyin' To The Hoop Basketball Invitational on Saturday. The Jaguars fell to Kettering Alter, the two-time defending Division II state champions, 54-36. The Jaguars were led by Colleen Neitzel '18 who posted team-highs of 11 points and seven rebounds for the Jags. Bre Coleman '18 (pictured) added eight points and six rebounds for SJA, who fell to 10-3 for the season.
Swimming The swimming and diving team had five swimmers qualify for and compete in the Northeast Classic last Saturday and Sunday. Maddy Kelly '20 qualified for Sunday's final in the 50 freestyle and won the bonus final heat in a time of 24.65. She finished 17th overall in the event. The Jaguars also had two relay teams that competed. The 200 medley relay team of Maddy Kelly '20, Paola Camacho-Colon '19, Rachel Strick '17 and Ally Sheehan '18 set a new school record with a time of 2:00.12 to finish in 18th place. The Jaguars also had an entry in the 200 freestyle relay (Rachel Strick '17, Ally Sheehan '18, Kassidy Gartin '19 and Maddy Kelly '20) which finished 22nd in a time of 1:48.62.
Indoor Track and Field The Indoor Track and Field team competed in their first meet of the season last Thursday in the North East Ohio Indoor Track Conference (NEOITC) Erie Division Meet at Spire. Highlights of the meet included Emma Pesicka '19 winning the shot put with an indoor school-record throw of 34 feet and 4.25 inches. The 4x800 meter relay team of Meghan Hahn '17, Annie Allen '20, Amanda Keim '20 and Grace Kelley '19 finished 3rd. Natalie Larkman '18 finished third in the pole vault, Jessica Wrenn '17 finished 6th in the 60m hurdles and 5th in the long jump and Olivia Battistoni '17 placed 5th in the 3200m run.
