Parent-Teacher Conferences Parent-Teacher conferences will be held on Thursday, February 23, 3:30-8 p.m.

Conference appointments are for 10 minutes and you can sign up for with any or all of your daughter's teachers. If you feel that you need more than 10 minutes to meet with your daughter's teacher(s), please email them directly to set up a conference for another day.

Please note: conferences are not mandatory. You only need to schedule appointments with teachers you feel necessary to see.

Student Spotlight

Margaret "Maggie" Seikel '17 has advanced to the Finals for the National Merit Scholarship competition!

Maggie has met the requirements to advance to the finals of the National Merit Scholarship Program competition, which includes maintaining an outstanding academic record throughout high school, an endorsement by her high school principal and earning an SAT score confirming an earlier performance on the qualifying test.

The National Merit Finalists will be considered for the National Merit Scholarships to be offered in 2017 and the scholarship awards will be announced in the beginning of March.

Cleveland Institute of Art Campus Connection Event On Monday, February 20, 10 a.m.- 1 p.m., the Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA) will be hosting an event for all interested art and design students and their families. The day will begin with an overview of CIA's curriculum, admissions process and will lead into a moderated creative career panel featuring CIA alumni from different disciplines. Following the presentation, Student Ambassadors will lead group tours throughout the building.

This event is open to any students, grades 9-12, that would like to take advantage of their day off. Click here to register for the event.

Heart Health Awareness Day Speaker This week, students in the Health Care Professional Affinity Community (HPAC) Club and the Health Science Honors Program sponsored their inaugural Heart Health Awareness Day on February 14. The day included a special presentation featuring cardiologist and speaker Dr. Terry A Gordon.

Name: Maya Cundiff '17 Accomplishments: Maya participated in the 2017 Tri-C High School Rock Off at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, where she was the lead singer of the band. "The band sang three covers: 'My Own Worst Enemy' by Lit, 'Go Your Own Way' by Fleetwood Mac and 'Heartbreaker' by Pat Benatar," shared Maya.

"My favorite part of the Rock Off was performing. We were the last band. It was definitely nerve wracking, but the crowd was amazing and very supportive. It was incredible to be able to share our talents with them," shared Maya.

Dr. Gordon graduated from Emory University with a degree in Psychology. Having completed his medical school training at what is now known as the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, a rotating internship at Doctors Hospital, Internal Medicine training at Akron General Medical Center, he then completed his Invasive Cardiology Fellowship at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation. "It took me 17 years to become a doctor but being able to help save people's lives is the most invigorating thing I could do. Don't ever pick a vocation based on what you will make financially. Find what you will truly love," Dr. Gordon shared with students. Dr. Gordon's days as a cardiologist were 14-15 hour days and he could see up to 40 people in the hospital.

Vocal and Instrumental Students Excel in Solo and Ensemble Event Vocal and instrumental music students participated in the Ohio Music Educator Association (OMEA) District 4 High School Solo and Ensemble Adjudicated Event.

The event took place this past Saturday at Cuyahoga Community College's Western Campus. Over 1000 performers from 34 schools attended. Bravo, ladies, on

a job well done!

Activities & Interests: Maya is a member of The Academy Chorale, Jazz Band, Concert Band and is a member of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus.

She is an avid volunteer at Youth Challenge (YC), where she currently serves as the president of the volunteer committee and an student intern for the YC Board of Trustees.

Team Enerjagers Teaches St. Christopher Parish Ecology Club to Make Reusable Lunch Boxes Team Enerjagers, the SJA club promoting sustainability, visited St. Christopher Parish, where they teamed up with the grade school's Ecology Club to make reusable lunch boxes. Duck TapeÂŽ Brand Duct Tape and construction paper were used for students to use at lunch and to help reduce the trash that is put into landfills.

Students Celebrate Black History Month

UNITY Club members and with Juanita Shealey, CSJ

This week, members of the UNITY Club with Sr. Juanita celebrated Black History Month by visiting the Black History Month display at the St. Joseph Center organized

by Juanita Shealey, CSJ. The display allows people to share and learn about the many accomplishments of African Americans in the country and to help build greater understanding and unity among all people.

"Sister Juanita shared that history is in the children's hands and we can make a difference now," shared Emily Sikora '20.

SADD Body Image Week Encourages Body Positive Messages This week, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) held their annual

Body Image Week. "The purpose of Body Image Week is to remind students that beauty is defined by much more than someone's appearance. With a focus on boosting self-esteem throughout the school, the club covers the building with positive messages in hopes that girls find a little more beauty within themselves," shared SADD President Bri Scebbi '17.

Balloon Artists' Club Inspired at Night to Shine The Balloon Artists' Club had a night to remember at last weekend's Night to Shine, a worldwide prom event for people with special needs, sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation. The event took place at 375 churches with 150,000 volunteers and honored 75,000 guests.

Kaitlyn Nieto '17, Krystyna Johnson '20 and Maeve Chambers '17, all members of the Balloon Artists' Club, volunteered at Abiding Faith Bible Church in Columbia Station. "My favorite memory was making a balloon for a boy and he watched me in awe as I was twisting it to form a dog. Once I gave it to him, his face lit up. I was so happy to bring someone so much joy over doing something so simple. I think what they are doing for people at Night to Shine is amazing," shared Kaitlyn Nieto '17.

Rugby Fundraiser at Si SeĂąor Support the rugby team's fundraiser on Thursday, February 23, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. at Si SeĂąor (16800 Lorain Ave.) The restaurant will donate 20% of each bill (before tax) to SJA Rugby. Attendees will need to show this flyer at checkout.

"Celebrate the Academy" is Next Weekend!

Join fellow members of the SJA community to "Celebrate the Academy" on Saturday, February 25 for the annual gala to benefit academic initiatives and scholarships. This year's theme is "All That Glitters is Purple & Gold." Event chairs are John & Andrea Ham P'18, Michael and Lisa Adkins Lonsway '84, P'18, and Patrick and Camille Sheehan P'18.

"Celebrate the Academy" begins with cocktails and a silent auction at 6 p.m.

Father-Daughter Dance, March 4 Celebrate the special bond between fathers and daughters on Saturday, March 4, at the annual Father-Daughter Dance. The dance is open to all grade levels and will be held at Brennan's Party Center from 6-11 p.m.

The evening includes dinner, dessert and beverages. Entertainment will be provided by a DJ and there will be a photo booth to preserve the night's memories.

'Journey With Joseph' Father-Daughter Retreat: Saturday, March 11 'Journey With Joseph' is a great opportunity to create father-daughter memories, escape from the stresses of everyday commitments and schedules and reconnect with your daughter. The Fathers' Club is sponsoring this spiritual walk and retreat for fathers, father figures and their daughters on the morning of Saturday, March 11.

This free event is from 8:30-Noon and the experience will foster an enhanced, special fatherdaughter bond.If interested, please RSVP by Sunday, March 5 to Mr. A.J. Hyland P'17.

Don't miss out on this opportunity to create a special memory with your daughter! Students who participate will receive four wellness credits.

Sports Highlights Basketball The Jaguars finished their regular season on Wednesday with a 59-37 loss at Berea-Midpark.

SJA finishes their impressive regular season at 18-4. On to the tournaments!

Swimming The swimming and diving program advanced eight students to the district competition after diving sectionals on Monday, February 6 and swimming sectionals last Saturday.

At the diving sectionals at Oberlin College, Brittany Miller '18 placed 18th in the diving competition, advancing her to the district diving meet at Bowling Green.

In the sectional swimming meet last Saturday at Cleveland State, the Jaguars advanced seven swimmers to the district meet. SJA's highlight of the day was a first-place finish and a sectional record for Maddy Kelly '20 in the 50 freestyle (24.38). Kelly also moved on individually with her 5th place finish in the 100 backstroke.

The Jaguars also had three relay teams qualify for the district meet: 200 medley relay (9th place): Maddy Kelly '20, Paola Camacho-Colon '19, Rachel Strick '17 and Ally Sheehan '18 200 freestyle relay (14th place): Maddy Kelly '20, Ally Sheehan '18, Kassidy Gartin '19 and Rachel Strick '17 400 freestyle relay (13th place): Ally Sheehan '18, Julia Patterson '19, Jadalise Pacheco '18 and Rachel Strick '17 The Jaguars team scored 66 points total at sectionals. Way to go, Jaguars!
