Reminder: Mandatory Meeting for Spring Sports Is Next Thursday

Join Us at "Celebrate the Academy!"

Any student who plans to participate in Track & Field, Softball or Lacrosse and has not played a fall or winter sport at SJA this season is required to attend a meeting on Thursday, February 16 at 6 p.m. in the Dining Hall. (Crew and Rugby students/parents need not attend.) This meeting should be attended by the student and a parent/guardian and will cover information about what is needed for tryouts, athletic expectations, etc. Following the general meeting, brief team meetings will be held for anyone who wants to know more details about the tryout process or specific items pertaining to the individual sport. Individual meetings will be held by the head coaches in each sport. Those meetings will begin at approximately 6:30 p.m.

Parent-Teacher Conferences Parent-Teacher conferences will be held on Thursday, February 23, 3:30-8 p.m.

Parents are invited to sign up for 10 minute appointments with any or all of your daughter's teachers. If you feel that you need more than 10 minutes to meet with your daughter's teacher(s), please email them directly to set up a conference for another day.

Please note: conferences are not mandatory. You only need to schedule appointments with teachers you feel necessary to see.

Junior Class Gains Art Appreciation This week, the Class of 2018 went on a field trip to The Cleveland Museum of Art, where they learned about the process of creating exhibits and then worked to create their own art exhibit. Click here to see more photographs from the trip.

Name: Reagan Bushok '20 Accomplishments: This year, Reagan began volunteering at Cogswell Hall, a permanent solution to homelessness that offers quality, low-income housing for disabled and economically disadvantaged individuals.

"Volunteering at Cogswell Hall has given me a wonderful opportunity to connect with people who have amazing stories. Each person I've met has taught me great lessons and I find myself wanting to go back to hear more. Even though they were born into different circumstances than I was, or their paths took a different turn than what they had hoped, they still carry themselves with pride, purpose and hope. They have inspired me to appreciate the life I live, and

Spiritually Uplifting Kairos XXXVII 53 retreatants and nine senior leaders gathered at the St. Leonard's Retreat Center last week for Kairos XXXVII. Kairos retreats focus on participants finding their own personal relationship with God during a few days of discerning and discovery.

Through the course of the retreat, a building of a strong community takes place, through the conditioning of the Processors opinion of openness reflection and trust.

Students Support 'Cleveland Go Red for Women' Event SJA students provided invaluable help at the annual American Heart Association's "Cleveland Go Red for Women" event at the Cleveland Convention Center. On Thursday, 12 students went to the Convention Center to help set up for the event.

On Friday, 19 students, along with Health Sciences Honors Program Coordinator Mr. Cory Otto, attended the American Heart Students volunteering at the Association Go Red Health Expo and "Cleveland Go Red for Women" event Luncheon. Students greeted event attendees, helped people register, set up tables, demonstrated CPR and handed out pamphlets about the American Heart Association.

"I didn't know that one in three women will suffer from heart disease. The statistics they shared were shocking. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States. Because of this event, I will be able to spread awareness about heart disease in women and the impact it has on society," shared Eden Tadesse '17.

Pep Rally Recognizes Winter Sports

Activities & Interests: At SJA, Reagan is involved in The Academy Chorale, Chinese Club, Math Club, Science Club and Show Choir. She serves as an Academy Ambassador and is a cast member for the musical, Guys and Dolls, at St. Edward High School.

Reagan takes voice lessons and participates in an a capella group at School of Rock. Her interests include music, theater, math and science, especially the space sciences. Reagan has been a certified SCUBA diver since she was 12.

College Corner

At this week's Pep Rally, we recognized all of our students participating in winter sports and those participating in theatre productions. Students were treated to a performance by the SJA dance team and introduced our new pep band!

English Students Inspired by Alumna Leader On Thursday, students in English teacher Mrs. Paula Conti's "Women Leading in the 21st Century" class listened to speaker and alumna Mrs. Maureen Fallon Adler '79. The class highlights women leaders through the ages as well as contributions they have made to society. Students develop skills needed to influence both the Students with Maureen Fallon Adler local and global community for the '79 during the "Women Leading in the common good through studying models 21st Century" class and theories of leadership, as well as through exposure to female leaders in Northeast Ohio. Guest speakers share their story by discussing the detours along the way, transferable skills from one profession to the next, support system and education.

Engineering Students Learn from Alumna

Students in Math teacher Mr. John Lesko's Honors Topics in Pre-Engineering and Programming classes had a two-week unit on transportation engineering from the organization Transportation YOU, taught by instructors from the Women's Transportation Seminar (WTS) International. The international organization is dedicated to the professional advancement of women in transportation, as well as helping women find opportunity and recognition in the transportation industry.

Transportation YOU is a hands-on, interactive program that offers girls ages 13-18 an introduction to a wide variety of transportation careers. 'Hoodies for the Homeless' Provides 150 Hoodies for Those in Need

A special thank you to all the members of the Saint Joseph Academy community who made donations to the "Hoodies for the Homeless" promotion during Catholic Schools Week. More than 150 hoodies were donated to the West Side Catholic Center and the Labre Ministry to the homeless at Saint Ignatius High School. 66% more hoodies were donated this year than in 2016. Join fellow members of the SJA community to "Celebrate the Academy" on Saturday, February 25 at SJA for the annual gala to benefit academic initiatives and scholarships. This year's theme is "All That Glitters is Purple & Gold." Event chairs are John & Andrea Ham P'18, Michael and Lisa Adkins Lonsway '84, P'18, and Patrick and Camille Sheehan P'18.

"Celebrate the Academy" begins with cocktails and a silent auction at 6 p.m.

Father-Daughter Dance, March 4 Celebrate the special bond between fathers and daughters on Saturday, March 4, at the annual Father-Daughter Dance. The dance is open to all grade levels and will be held at Brennan's Party Center, 13000 Triskett Road from 6-11 p.m.

The evening includes dinner, dessert and beverages. Entertainment will be provided by a DJ, and there will be a photo booth to preserve the night's memories.

As SJA parents, we know that you realize how vital it is in today's challenging world that your children receive an education in a faith-filled, empowering and nurturing environment. You can help continue the mission of Saint Joseph Academy. A generous benefactor has offered us $25,000 to mount the third annual Parent Participation Challenge. Like last year, parents are being challenged to make a minimum gift of $25 to the Annual Fund in gratitude for the opportunities being provided at the Academy for their daughters. If at least 25 percent of our current parents make a commitment, the Academy will receive $25,000 to support our incredible students.

We met this challenge last year, so we know that Saint Joseph Academy parents are an amazing group of people.

Sports Highlights

Basketball On Wednesday evening at Saint Joseph Academy, the Jaguar basketball team celebrated its three Seniors: Colleen Drellishak '17, Claire Orsagos '17 and Ellen Vichill '17. All three played instrumental roles in leading the Jaguars to a 52-44 win over Padua. The win upped SJA's record to 16-3.

Ellen had her best game of the season on senior night as she scored 12 points and hit a pair of three-pointers. Colleen had seven points and three steals, while Claire added two assists, two steals and led the SJA offense.

Molly Neitzel '19 had a team-high 13 points and six rebounds while Bre Coleman '18 had 12 points and a team-high four assists.

SJA used a big 17-3 run to open the second quarter and jump to a 24-9 lead. team's Seniors at Senior Night Padua hung around in the second half and got the game down to as close as 43-38 but SJA made some key plays down the stretch, including a three-pointer, to seal the win.
