The Into the Light Walk provides education about suicide prevention and depression awareness as well as an opportunity for survivors of suicide and sufferers of depression to experience healing in a safe, anonymous way. "My mother, Brigette Ackerman Scebbi '88 and I chose to walk in the 'Into the Light Walk' to honor a few friends of mine that are suicide L-R: Brigette Ackerman Scebbi '88 survivors. At the event, it was moving to with Bri Scebbi '17 witness a veteran who brought a flag with a peace sign and wore a sign that said 'in memory of soldier suicides,'" shared Students Against Destructive Decisions Club (SADD) President Bri Scebbi '17.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month Promotes Safety for Students This week, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) invited Mrs. Jen Kappler, P '19, owner of Monarch Personal Safety and selfdefense instructor, to share ways for students to protect oneself and others as well as give empowering information Students with speaker Mrs. Jen about what one can do to prevent sexual Kappler P'19 assault. "Use your voice as a weapon. Have a plan for your personal safety. Do not fight resistance with resistance. Trust your instincts. Risks are everywhere, so it is important to be able to protect yourself," shared Mrs. Kappler.

Students Learn Importance of Social Media Safety with National Honor Society's Internet Safety For the month of April, the National Honor Society has focused on Internet Safety to raise awareness about safe habits and practices on social media. The campaign directed its efforts toward Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter and texting. This week highlighted Twitter, promoting using the social media platform for positive change. Students were encouraged to use the trending Twitter topic #sursumkindness to share uplifting thoughts to encourage others in the Saint Joseph Academy community. "When using social media platforms like Twitter, it is important to remember that kindness is more powerful than hate. By spreading love, you are ensuring your profile will stay safe from negative things like cyberbullying. In a world where more and more interactions take place online, it is easy for us to hide behind a screen and be meaner than we would be in person. By being a force of positivity, you are helping to eliminate cyberbullying and other negative trends on Twitter," shared Evelyn Nichols '17.

Jaguars to Join North Coast League in 2018-19

Saint Joseph Academy is pleased to announce that the school has accepted an invitation to join the North Coast League (NCL) athletic conference starting with the 2018-19 school year. The NCL is one of the most competitive conferences in the state of Ohio. During the past year, NCL member schools that Saint Joseph Academy will compete against have captured state titles in volleyball, soccer, basketball and softball while also having multiple teams advance to regionals and several appearances in the state final four. As a conference member, Saint Joseph Academy student-athletes will have the ability to compete against some of the top players and teams on a more frequent basis, which will help student-athletes develop their skills and enable Saint Joseph Academy athletics to continue to grow. In addition, being a member of the NCL allows Saint Joseph Academy to contend for conference titles along with providing another opportunity for student-athletes to earn recognition for their accomplishments. Conference play creates and encourages meaningful games and rivalries with member schools while also allowing more structure from an academic standpoint with specific days of the week for games and more consistent scheduling and travel. Some sports will play a conference schedule while others will compete in a conference meet or tournament. Crew, Indoor Track & Field and Rugby will not be affected by joining the NCL.
