Friendship Celebrated at Grand Reunion Weekend More than 200 graduates spanning seven decades from 1941 to 2011 gathered back at SJA the weekend of October 7Michelle Schneider McGuire '96, Sarah Shea 9 to celebrate their Glass '96, Nikki Miller '96, Becky Goede Grand Reunion. 50th class reunion. Alumnae were welcomed back to the Young Alumnae social last Friday night and Grand Reunion dinner on Saturday. There was a brunch for alumnae celebrating 50 years or more since graduation on Sunday, as well as an Appreciation Mass for the entire SJA community.

Alumnae Recognized by Their Colleges for Their Efforts Congratulations to two alumnae, Krista Freeman '07 (sister of Klaire Freeman '05) and Kara Isabella '08, for being honored as distinguished alumna by their respective colleges. Krista was honored by Cleveland State University as one of this year's Distinguished Alumna graduating from CSU in 2011, she currently attends Carnegie Mellon University where she is obtaining her Ph.D. in physics. She is conducting interdisciplinary L-R: Krista Freeman '07 and Kara Isabella '08 research in physical virology, which has taken her to laboratories in Sweden and Switzerland. She also attended the 2015 Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, where 70 Nobel Laureates met with 672 young scientists from 88 countries. Kara was named one of Miami University's "8 of the Last 9" for her work creating Backyard Lots, a "program that transforms vacant lots into safe and convenient recreational outlets for the youth of Slavic Village in Cleveland." Kara graduated from the School of Visual Arts with her M.F.A. in design for social innovation. She is now working with the NYC Department of Small Business Services as a Neighborhood 360Â° Fellow. Eight Seniors Named as National Merit Semifinalist & Commended Scholars Congratulations to senior Maggie Seikel on being named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist and seven seniors who were named National Merit Commended Scholars. These students are among the select group in the top 5 percent of the 1.6 million students who entered the 2017 competition by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test to earn the designation of Commended Student. Mass for Deceased Alumnae, Family & Friends Next Month During the month of November, the Church remembers those who have died. This time allows us to focus on our faith in the promise of our resurrection as well as on our family members, classmates and friends with whom we will one day be reunited. Throughout the month, the Academy will remember all deceased alumnae of Saint Joseph Academy, Nazareth Academy and St. Therese Academy, and in particular those who have died during the past year. In addition, we will remember deceased parents, benefactors and friends. We invite you to join with us by sending the names of your dearly departed whom you would like remembered at our Annual Mass for Deceased Alumnae, Family and Friends. The Mass is being held on Thursday, November 3, at 7 p.m. in the Worship Space at the St. Joseph Center (CSJ Motherhouse). Bring your family or a friend and join us at SJA for our annual fall play the weekend of November 4, featuring "Play On!" - a hilarious story of a theater group trying desperately to put on a play in spite of maddening interference from a haughty author who keeps revising the script. Athletic Highlights Memorable Tennis Season Concludes The Jaguars closed out a very successful 2016 season last night, as Hannah Schuette '17 and Melissa Martin '20 fell at the Northeast Ohio Division I District Tournament. Schuette/Martin entered the tournament as the #3 seed from the Oberlin Sectional and drew Mayfield, the #2 seed from the Solon Sectional. After a back-and-forth start, Mayfield finished the first set strong by winning the final four games to claim a 6-2 victory. The Jags battled back in the second set holding serve all the way to 4-4 before Mayfield was able to get the lone break of serve in the set. Mayfield then held serve to clinch a 6-2, 6-4 victory. Schuette closed her career with back-to-back 20+ win seasons, while Martin also won 20 matches as a freshman this season. The Jags finished the year at 16-6 as a team and claimed a league championship in the NEOTA league.
Volleyball Finishes Regular Season with a Win on Senior Night Saint Joseph Academy finished its regular season in style on Tuesday, October 12, which was also Senior Night, as they swept Eastlake North (25-10, 25-16, 25-16). The Jaguars finish the regular season with a record of 17-5. The Jaguars, who are currently ranked 16th in the state, will begin postseason play in the Midview District on Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at Midview High School against the winner of the Rocky River/Westlake game.
Cross Country Dominates at Gilmour Academy The Varsity and JV cross country teams both took home titles at the Gilmour Academy Paul Primeau Invitational on Friday, September 30. Not only were both teams victorious, but SJA had the overall winners in each of the races. The Varsity Jaguars were led by Freshman Annie Allen, who finished first overall in a time of 19:31. She was joined shortly after by fellow Jaguars Sydney Seymour '18 (3rd - 19:45) and Senior Maggie Wagner (4th - 20:20) (daughter of Margaret Becker Wagner '80, sister of Cecilia Wagner '18, and granddaughter of Sheila Allen Becker '54) Olivia Battistoni '17 (7th), Amanda Keim '20 (11th), Caitlyn Walsh '18 (13th) (daughter of Megan Darcy Walsh '84 and sister of Shannon Walsh '20) and Meghan Hahn '17 (29th) (daughter of Patricia Hayes Hahn '89 and sister of Monica Hahn '16) also ran well and contributed to the team title.
Alana Vovk '17 (22:14) (sister of Alesha Vovk '14) captured the title in the JV race and was again followed closely by Claudia Becker '18 (3rd -22:30) (granddaughter of Sheila Ann Becker '54), Liz Renner '17 (5th - 22:47), Margaret Grant '19 (6th - 22:49), Ceci Wagner '18 (7th - 22:49) (daughter of Margaret Becker Wagner '80, sister of Maggie Wagner '17 and granddaughter of Sheila Allen Becker '54) and Jessa Nauman '18 (8th - 22:52) (sister of Kristin Nauman '18). The team is currently ranked 10th in the state in Division I.
Golf Ends Season on a High Note The golf team ended their season on Tuesday, October 4 as five SJA golfers competed in the sectional tournament at the Legacy Course at Sweetbriar. Three SJA seniors, Izzy Robertson (daughter of Cassandra Schwartz Robertson '84, sister of Kelsey Robertson '09 and Ashleigh Robertson '12), Kristin Hetrick (sister of Nicole Hetrick '15) and Emily Welshans, participated in the tournament along with Sophomores Libby Poole and Madeline Macalla. The Seniors went out on a high note as they each shot their best round ever for 18 holes! Robertson led SJA with a 98.
Soccer has Final Week of Regular Season Action The Jaguars and Shoregals played a very evenly matched game on Monday, October 10 as SJA and Avon Lake played to a 0-0 tie. The highlight for SJA was the great performances by both SJA goalkeepers, Madison Wilson '19 and Kylie Schmitz '19. The Jaguars played their last season game on Thursday, October 13 against Medina Highland, where they tied at 0-0, bringing their season record to 9-4-3. They play their Sectional Semi-Final game vs Lakewood Monday 7 p.m. at St. Ignatius Wasmer Field. To check out photos from the games or to see the schedules for the upcoming week, click here.
