2017 Distinguished Alumna: Daria Roebuck '75 We are pleased and honored to announce Daria Roebuck '75 has been named Saint Joseph Academy's 2017 Distinguished Alumna! Daria will be honored on Saturday, February 25 at the Academy's annual gala, "Celebrate the Academy."

"Daria puts a very high value on the quality education she received at Saint Joseph Academy. She served for six years as a member of the Board of Directors and has been a consistent donor to SJA. Catholic education is extremely important to Daria. She constantly boasts of the strong admission numbers, the vitality of the Academy and is an excellent ambassador for the school," stated nominator, friend, Distinguished Alumna Linda Kane '75.

Daria is a graduate of Cleveland State University's Monte Ahuja College of Business. In 2015, she retired as Vice President, Human Resources for ERICO International Corporation.

"We are delighted to recognize Daria with this well deserved honor!" shared President Mary Ann Corrigan-Davis '71.

It's time to "Celebrate the Academy!" Join us on Saturday, February 25 at SJA for the annual gala to benefit academic initiatives and scholarships. This year's theme is "All That Glitters is Purple & Gold." The gala will include recognizing 2017 Distinguished Alumna Daria Roebuck '75 and 2017 Medaille Shield honoree the Robert and Loretta Arth Cleary '40 Family.

Robotics Team Competes at VEX Competition In December, 74 elite Robotics teams from 19 high schools representing three states competed in the Kalahari Classic with the VEX Robotics Competition. Saint Joseph Academy sent 17 students representing five teams. Every team designed their robot from scratch for the event to play a game, which represented over 300 hours of intense student work. Teams had the opportunity to write software that could operate their robot without a driver to earn more points during the autonomous period.

Parent volunteer at the competition Mrs. Joyce Brady Dever L-R: Seniors Annie Wolodzko and '83, P'17, Deputy Chief (Acting), Materials & Structures Greta Noeth diligently work on their Division (LM), NASA Glenn Research Center shared, "During robot the Kalahari Classic, SJA teams returned to the pit after each match energized with ideas on how they could improve their performance through minor mechanical adjustments and revised programming, which they were often able to implement in time for their next match. SJA students that pursue engineering will be well-prepared for the multi-disciplinary projects that will be incorporated into their engineering curriculum. Students will all be prepared for the workforce of the future, able to solve complex problems through collaboration and innovation."

Help Us Recognize Our Young Alumnae Nominations for alumnae to be considered for the 2017 Saint Joseph Academy "25 Under 35" honors are due March 31, 2017.

Honorees are chosen for their achievements, compassionate leadership and service in a global society. The event will be held at the Academy on Saturday, June 17, 2017.

Women Leading in the 21st Century Class Speaker Students in English teacher Mrs. Paula Conti's "Women Leading in the 21st Century" class listened to speaker and SJA alumna Mrs. Karen Strebelow Barrett '83. Mrs. Barrett serves as the Vice President & Branch Manager for Charles Schwab Corporation.

The class highlights women leaders through the ages as well as contributions they have made to society. Students develop skills needed to influence both the local and global community for the common good through studying models and theories of leadership, as well as through exposure to

female leaders in Northeast Ohio. Guest speakers share their story by discussing the detours along the way, transferable skills from one profession to the next, support system and education.

Athletic Highlights Basketball: Great Team Effort Leads Jags Past Blue Streaks The Jaguars swept the regular season series from Magnificat as the Jaguars posted a 44-28 win on the road on Saturday, January 21. With the win, SJA moved to 12-3 on the season.

The Jaguars outscored the Blue Streaks 26-13 in the second half and played a great allaround team game leading to the victory. They were led by Colleen Neitzel '18 who had 10 points and 12 rebounds while Colleen Drellishak '17 (daughter of Kathleen Fox Drellishak '81) added nine points and Molly Neitzel '19 and Molly Dever '18 (sister of Bridget Dever '15) also added seven points. Bre Coleman '18 had six points and eight rebounds. Molly Neitzel hit an off-balance three-pointer at the third quarter buzzer which helped propelled the Jaguars to a lead they would not relinquish.

Swimming The swimming and diving team finished 8th on Saturday, January 7 at the Orange Invitational. The Jaguar swimmers had several strong showings in their heats, advancing them to the finals of their events.

Brittany Miller '18 finished in 5th in the diving competition.

Indoor Track and Field The Jaguars team competed in their first meet of the season at the North East Ohio Indoor Track Conference (NEOITC) Erie Division Meet at Spire. Highlights of the meet included Emma Pesicka '19 winning the shot put with an indoor school-record throw of 34 feet and 4.25 inches.

The 4x800 meter relay team of Meghan Hahn '17 (daughter of Patricia Hayes Hahn '89 and sister of Monica Hahn '16), Annie Allen '20, Amanda Keim '20 and Grace Kelley '19 (sister of Marge Kelley '14) finished 3rd.

Natalie Larkman '18 finished third in the pole vault, Jessica Wrenn '17 finished 6th in the 60m hurdles and 5th in the long jump and Olivia Battistoni '17 placed 5th in the 3200m run.

As you may have heard, our dear Sr. Kathleen Carey, CSJ '49, passed away on December 21. Sister Kathleen was such a big part of Saint Joseph Academy for many years - as a student, teacher, interim principal, alumnae director and chief cheerleader for our dear alma mater. She loved everyone and everyone loved Sister Kathleen! May she rest in peace.

In 2013, "The Sr. Kathleen Carey, CSJ '49 Endowed Scholarship" was started with the purpose to provide tuition assistance for a young woman (any class year) with a demonstrated financial need at Saint Joseph Academy.
