In the cycle of the school year, the summertime gives us a chance to reflect on the year just ended while we prepare for the new academic year soon to begin. This summer, our students and faculty are enjoying a few extra weeks of vacation, due to the construction project. I haven’t heard one person complain about that change!

The 2011-12 academic year was surely a successful one. We warmly welcomed new Principal Blake Prewitt, who has brought boundless energy, a clear academic vision and a deep Catholic faith to share with our school community. His leadership provided a steady hand, along with Assistant Principal Emily Hanson ‘99 and Dean of Women Marie Ciolek. The students performed very well in the classroom, in their sporting and other extracurricular activities, in their faith development and service projects, and even on their international adventures! You can read about their achievements on the following pages.

I am so proud of the young women of the Academy. They make a positive impression wherever they go, whether near or far. Read about the leadership of Caroline Pallotta and Lauren Brooks in giving a voice to a difficult subject. Marvel at the two students who traveled to serve in an orphanage in Mozambique, Africa during Easter break. Meet the pre-engineering team who qualified for Nationals. There is no stopping the students of SJA! When our students arrive back on campus after Labor Day, they will enjoy the new spaces that are being prepared for them. What a blessing we have in Lorie Howley and her magnificent gift to the school. The Howley Terrace and Scholars’ Porch truly embrace our beautiful grounds. We are so grateful for her support. And we humbly ask for your support, too. We still have almost three million dollars to raise to continue our renovation project next summer, when we will upgrade the heating, electricity, technology and safety systems. We need your help to complete our needed improvements.

Please mark your calendar now for the Ribbon Cutting/Donor Appreciation Mass on September 9th or the All Alumnae Mass and Homecoming on Sunday, October 7th. Come home to see how the school has been updated and meet the wonderful young women who call SJA their home. We welcome you with open arms.

Construction Academy Provides “Real World” Experience for Students

S

ince March, workers have been busy transforming the back of the Academy grounds into a 21st century learning environment. Construction of an expanded and transformed cafeteria, The Howley Terrace and The Scholars’ Porch are part of the school’s ongoing $7.8 million Expanding

Minds ~ Building Futures ~ Raising Leaders capital campaign. But the work is more than just a bricks-and-mortar project. It also is an opportunity to create a real-life classroom called the Construction Academy, designed for students interested in engineering and construction-related careers.

The Construction Academy has 20 students participating and is the brainchild of Tari Rivera, president of Regency Construction Services and a member of the SJA Board of Directors. Ms. Rivera is chair of SJA’s Facilities Committee, overseeing the planned renovation of the 84-year-old Academy building’s

infrastructure. She had the idea for the Construction Academy during the early days of project planning.

“The purpose of the Construction Academy is to engage students in the building process,” shared Ms. Rivera. “They are learning first-hand about the process of design and construction, and all the elements involved.”

So far, she said, students have attended three sessions. The first session was a project overview in which students broke into three different groups (Owner, Architect and Construction Manager) and learned how each group functioned and came together as a team.

The second session involved using scale models and blueprints, estimating how much building material is needed, and calculating costs.

The third Construction Academy session was perhaps the most interesting to many of the participants! It involved putting on hardhats and walking through the actual construction site. Students also tried their hand at constructing a small wall with mortar and bricks.

“The classes are so interesting! We are seeing our school from a completely different perspective,” shared Construction Academy student Maggie Bishop ‘13. “I am never going to turn down an opportunity to learn, and the Construction Academy allows me to learn about engineering and construction projects.

I am also seeing how much school officials are involved in important decisions. I love my school more than anything, so it’s interesting

to see how this is about more than a bigger cafeteria. It’s about our school growing!”

During the summer, students will learn how to be construction tour guides. They will be given statistics by the workers and briefed on the energy efficient systems being installed.

“I hope the Construction Academy shows the young women that there are a lot of opportunities for them in fields they might not otherwise consider,” stated Ms. Rivera.

Construction of the expanded cafeteria – it’s more than doubling in size! – as well as the porch and terrace will be completed by the start of the 2012-13 school year.

Academy Benefactor Sees New Terrace, Porch Spaces as Sources of Spiritual Renewal

orie Howley, one of the Academy’s most generous and consistent supporters, could not be more excited by the potential in SJA’s soon-to-be completed expanded cafeteria/multipurpose space, rooftop porch and garden-like terrace being built as part of the school’s ongoing $7.8 million Expanding Minds ~ Building Futures ~ Raising Leaders capital campaign.

Mrs. Howley, Executive Director of the Howley Family Foundation and a Saint Joseph Academy board member, has a degree in horticulture from Cornell University and understands the healing and contemplative power of nature. She and her husband Nick recently gave SJA one of the most significant gifts in its 122-year history – one million dollars to help make the expansion and renovations a reality. With this gift, Saint Joseph Academy has raised

more than $5 million for its $7.8 million capital campaign.

While aiming to help with muchneeded infrastructure improvements for the 84-year-old building, Mrs. Howley couldn’t help but be drawn to details about the terrace and gardens incorporated into the capital campaign plans.

“I love the outdoors and I love the idea of students being able to connect to nature through the terrace and porch,” shared Mrs. Howley. “I know these retreats will provide the girls moments of peace and inspiration during their hectic school days.”

The rooftop space is being called The Scholars’ Porch in honor of the Howleys’ dedication to helping SJA students through their foundation's Howley Scholars program. With this year’s freshman class, The Howley Family Foundation has touched

the lives of 32 of our students.

In addition, the exterior lower space has been named The Howley Terrace. These two areas are the most visible manifestations of what makes SJA’s capital campaign unique: enabling students, staff and visitors to foster a deeper connection to nature. The space also is conducive to dynamic group collaboration vital in a global 21st century community.

Mrs. Howley’s belief in the transformational quality of nature mirrors the tradition of the visionary Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph. The Sisters responded to the needs of the time to educate young women when Saint Joseph Academy was started in 1890.

A mere eight years later, Mother Theresa Fitzmaurice, CSJ, saw a perfect home and connection to God in the rural outskirts of Cleveland. It is logical that this latest momentous time in the school’s history should include a deep connection to nature, and thus to God. The design of the new cafeteria provides more natural lighting, with a glass wall showcasing the beautiful park-like campus.

The new, airy and spacious room will allow Academy students to eat lunch, collaborate on projects, and access a range of multi-media technologies in both large and small group settings. Native vegetation and landscaping techniques will further our sustainability initiatives by reducing storm water runoff.

The creation of The Howley Terrace and The Scholars’ Porch will provide students and adults with the opportunity to enjoy an urban oasis, and build a sense of community where “all may be one.”

“One of the primary missions of our foundation is to provide parents with good options for their children’s education,” explained Mrs. Howley. “We support schools that provide both a great education and a strong value system. Nick and I see Saint Joseph Academy as uniquely effective in these areas. The potential for enhancing student life with this terrace is an additional and unique benefit that makes Saint Joseph Academy stand out.”

Global Travel

F

ifty-three World Languages students had the opportunity to gain a unique, global perspective by traveling to Spain and China over Easter Break!

Thirty-four advanced Spanish students, along with five chaperones, journeyed to Spain. At the same time, 17 students – 16 of whom studied advanced Chinese – and three chaperones flew halfway around the world to experience the culture and sights of China.

The travelers to Spain started their adventure in Madrid on Holy Thursday.

Students enjoyed the Plaza Mayor and experienced an eye-popping visit to the worldrenown Museo del Prado, where they learned the history of the museum built in 1785 and

were able to view works by masters Goya, El Greco and Velazquez. Over the course of 12 days, they also explored the wondrous Alhambra in Granada; the Cathedral of St. Mary in Sevilla; and walked the Las Ramblas in Barcelona. One of the more exciting finds was seeing the phrase “Sursum Corda” etched

in stone at the Antoni Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona.

“One of the greatest surprises was seeing the words ‘Sursum Corda’ carved on multiple spires,” shared World Languages Department chair Holly Ushiroda. “The students really enjoyed the connection to SJA!” “Granada was my favorite city because it is very quaint and historic,” shared senior Elizabeth Wagner.

Leaving Cleveland the same day, but headed in the opposite direction, students traveling to China didn’t arrive in that country until midnight on Holy Thursday, having lost nearly an entire day thanks to crossing over the International Dateline! Their adventure began in Beijing, where they visited the Olympic

Village, site of the 2006 Olympic Games, followed by a trip to the stunning Summer Palace, where they had a private Tai Chi lesson before traveling by boat to the palace grounds.

The next day included a visit to a segment of the ancient and awe-inspiring Great Wall of China, where the students learned that the wall is actually a series of fortifications made of stone, brick, tamped earth, wood and other materials. The tour guide made the history come alive for the students as she pointed out that parts of the wall were built as early as the 7th Century, with most of the wall being rebuilt during the Ming Dynasty.

Other highlights included visiting a typical Chinese home, where students met with an extended family and saw their sleeping areas,

kitchen and central courtyard. The visit to the Forbidden City in Beijing illustrated the revered and separated life of Chinese emperors. A Buddhist Temple, filled with Shanghai residents praying and meditating, was eye-opening, as was the phenomenal view from the 1,536-foot-high Oriental Pearl TV Tower (the third highest TV tower in the world), showing the expansive city of Shanghai. Visits to Ming Tombs in both Beijing and Nanjing were examples of the reverence shown by the Chinese people for their emperors.

“Experiencing China, especially the Forbidden City and Great Wall, was an adventure of a lifetime. I’m so grateful I had the opportunity to see this ancient and fascinating country and learn some

of the history and culture,” shared Laura Kalynchuk ’12.

SJA’s successful commitment to the education of young women for a global society was seen in students being able to converse easily in the countries’ native languages, thanks to three and sometimes four years of World Language instruction.

Letter from the Principal

International Diploma, More AP Classes on the Horizon!

T

he world is a classroom for Saint Joseph Academy! With Advanced Placement classes being offered in our World Languages classes of Chinese, French, Spanish and Latin, students already are gaining an international advantage in a global economy.

Starting in the 2012-13 school year, SJA is going even more global in its perspective by offering a range of Advanced Placement classes such as AP Psychology that will enable students to earn an Advanced Placement International Diploma (APID). This globally recognized certificate allows graduates to apply to universities and colleges outside the United States. It is recognized as part of the admission process at such schools as the University of British Columbia, London Metropolitan University, the Royal Academy of Music, and the University of St Andrews. An APID is not a substitute for a high school diploma, but rather

an additional certification of outstanding academic excellence. Similar to an International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma, it challenges students to display exceptional achievement on AP Exams across several disciplines.

Speaking of Advanced Placement classes, students are in for another exciting change in the upcoming school year. We have adapted our block schedule to allow for more class options and more AP offerings. We now have 14 AP courses! Our AP enrollment is higher than any time in the school’s history! We have more than 200 students (30% of the student

body) taking Advanced Placement classes, while 11% of seniors are taking three or more AP classes. Sixty-five percent of seniors will be taking an AP class. We are awed by their devotion to education and willingness to challenge themselves.

Additionally on the horizon, SJA is starting an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) college-readiness program this fall. (See the full story on AVID on page 9).

It is a great time to be a Jaguar! I would like to thank everyone who made my first year as principal such a memorable time. Here’s to another exciting academic adventure in 2012-13!

Pre-Engineering Team Qualifies for Nationals … Again!

F

or the second consecutive year, the SJA pre-engineering team participated in the Ohio Regional “F1 in Schools” Competition.

Team Manager Melissa Brodsky ’12 led this year’s team, The Road Warriors.

She was joined by juniors Brianna Dombo, Kelly Haller, Patricia Kay, Karen McGraw and Beatrice Ridmann.

The “F1 in Schools” challenge requires students to design an F1 race car using a CAD program, manufacture the car with a CNC router, race their car using CO2 propellant, produce a 20-page portfolio, design a pit display, market their team and sponsors, and give a 10-minute verbal presentation in front of actual engineers. The competition rankings are based on a team’s combined score in all of these categories. The Road Warriors took first place in the presentation category and were in the top 3 in many others.

Participation in this competition illustrates the growing strength of SJA’s pre-engineering courses. In

the 2012-13 school year, a total of 66 students are enrolled in the “Introduction to Engineering” class! Five of the Road Warriors team members have decided, thanks to their exposure to the potential career paths available to engineering graduates, to pursue college studies in

engineering.

“We were absolutely thrilled to participate in this competition and are so honored that we qualified for the national competition,” shared Melissa Brodsky ’12.

“It’s a lot of hard work, but it is really worth it when you know you’ve done a good job.”

AVID College Readiness Program Being Launched

Visit from “Central Park Jogger” and “Take Back the Night” Event Raise Sexual Assault Awareness

A

s any parent knows, getting a child ready for the challenges of college can be daunting.

SJA parents and faculty now will have a tool unique in area parochial schools to help students face those challenges, thanks to a $40,000 grant by the Eva L. and Joseph M. Bruening Foundation. The grant will allow the Academy to be the first parochial school in Northeast Ohio to offer AVID, or Advancement Via Individual Determination. This college readiness program will be offered starting in the 2012-13 school year.

“According to research, AVID students are more likely to take the more rigorous Advancement Placement and Honors classes,” shared Principal Blake J. Prewitt. “AVID students complete four-year college entrance requirements at a rate consistently higher than their peers.”

AVID is an elective class for select students. For one class block a day, AVID students learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and asking probing questions, get academic help from peers and tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college attainable. Students are typically required to enroll in at least one of their school’s toughest classes, such as honors or Advanced Placement, in addition to the AVID elective.

“As students progress, their self-images improve, and they become academically successful leaders and role models for other students,” stated Mr. Prewitt.

“AVID is about providing students with skills to be successful in college and in life,” stated President Mary Ann Corrigan-Davis ’71. “Thanks to the generosity of the Bruening Foundation, Saint Joseph Academy will continue with its 122-year tradition of academic excellence. We are grateful for their support."

Central Park Jogger Trisha Meili

n a warm April evening 23 years ago, the life of Wall Street investment expert Trisha Meili’s life was changed forever as a result of a vicious beating and sexual assault. Ms. Meili was attacked while jogging in New York City’s Central Park. Left for dead with a crushed skull and massive blood loss, Ms. Meili was dubbed the “Central Park Jogger.”

Ms. Meili shared her story, which she stresses is a tale of resilience and hope, with students in April in a very special day of raising awareness organized by Caroline Pallotta ’12 and Lauren Brooks ’13, founders of the school’s SAVE (Sexual Assault and Violence Education) Campaign, and volunteers at the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center (CRCC).

In addition to Ms. Meili’s visit, the CRCC and SAVE also sponsored a “Take Back the Night” walk and rally on the SJA campus and involved participants marching to Our Lady of Angels Church and back.

All the events were part of the CRCC’s designation of April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

“We aren’t aware of our capacity for resilience until we are challenged,” shared

Ms. Meili, who spent eight months hospitalized and then in rehabilitation following the attack. “Resiliency is like a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger is gets. I see myself as a survivor, rather than a victim.”

SJA’s a cappella group Cecilia’s Song and President Mary Ann Corrigan-Davis ’71 expanded the initiative by participating in the Cleveland Rape Crisis’s “Sing Out!” in June, an inspirational event featuring more than 100 community leaders who took a break from their day jobs to “sing out” against sexual violence.

Approximately 800 people attended that event held in the Ohio Theatre.

Serving the Dear Neighbor Students Traveled on Service Trip to Africa

D

uring Easter Break, 15 students were joined by 10 students from our sister school, St. Joseph’s Academy in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to participate in the second annual “Serve Together” event, performing service throughout the city of Cleveland and embracing opportunities to connect with our Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph. “Serve Together” was started seven years ago by the Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph. The purpose is to provide hands-on service to communities, as well as illustrate the causes and effects of poverty.

During this year’s “Serve Together” event, the 25 students and three adults served St. Colman’s, The West Side Catholic Center,

Providence House, Famico Foundation, Bountiful Basement, St. Timothy Park Apartments, Camp Cheerful, Transitional Housing, and Regina Healthcare Center.

Last year, eleven of our students traveled to Baton Rouge and volunteered at such locations as St. Gabriel Parish, which was devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

Carrie Vall, CSJ, Felicia Petruziello, CSJ ’56, Marilyn Nickol, CSJ, Pat McHale, CSJ ’56, and Mary Hough, CSJ ’54 joined the students throughout the week. On one evening, the group enjoyed dinner with the Sisters in their dining room and traded stories about their service experiences.

“The experience made Easter celebrations all the more special,” shared Sheila Timmons ’12.

Students Clean Children’s Garden as Part of Global Youth Service Day

O

n Saturday, April 24, students participating in Global Youth Service Day activities helped clean the Hershey Children’s Garden at the Cleveland Botanical Gardens in Cleveland’s University Circle area. It was the third year in a row SJA has participated in Global Youth Service Day projects. Students cleaned out weeds and debris to make room for spring growth, and planted seeds for the children’s vegetable garden.

hile waiting for a Crew Club practice to begin last year, then-juniors Alex Kozak and Alex Ehrett starting talking about how they would like to help children in need. That conversation and 12 months of hard work and fundraising come to fruition as the two seniors boarded an airplane in April and flew to Vilanculos, Mozambique, where they spent 17 days working and teaching pre-school children living in an orphanage.

They brought with them much-needed First Aid supplies, craft items, durable small toys and puzzles and games for the

children who live in Mozambique, located on the eastern coast of Africa. The items were donated by students, their families and friends, faculty and staff.

“We really enjoyed working with children, specifically preschoolers and orphans,” shared Alex Kozak ’12. “We taught English classes, assisted in the preschool and organized activities for the children,” added Alex Ehrett.

The life-changing experience lived up to the students’ expectations. “The children were amazing. I will always remember them with love,” stated Alex Kozak.

The fundraiser was designed to increase awareness of breast cancer and raise money for continued research.

Students Undergo Haircuts for “Locks of Love”!

On Sunday, May 20, a group of 35 students participated in the 3rd Annual Kevin Healey Memorial ”Kick It” Tournament at Saint Ignatius High School. One of SJA’s four teams advanced to win the girls’ section of the tournament. More importantly, SJA students raised funds to help in the efforts to find the cure for pediatric cancer!

Congratulations, Class of 2012!

C

lapping and joyful cheers greeted the 163 members of the Class of 2012 as they made their way down Rocky River Drive on Tuesday, June 5, for the time-honored Walk of the Roses. It was an enthusiastic and loving farewell as the class, known for their high spirits and giving nature, started the new chapter of their lives as alumnae of Saint Joseph Academy.

The 2012 Commencement speaker was Anne Anne Marie Marie Carey Pecon ’71, retired Vice President of Carey Pecon ‘71 Human Resources at Thomas & Betts Corporation and outgoing chair of the Saint Joseph Academy Board of Directors.

She encouraged the graduates to enjoy life and not be afraid to take risks as they travel through life and their careers.

National Merit finalist Kara Hurley was the Class of 2012 Valedictorian. To the laughter of fellow classmates, she pointed out how their lives have changed in the last four years as they gained confidence and poise as students and scholars. Kara will be attending Fordham University in New York City. She intends to major in history, with the aim of going to law school.

Samantha Sohl was honored as the class Salutatorian. She will be attending the University of Cincinnati, with the intention of majoring in political science and pre-law studies.

The Class of 2012 Earns $18.2 million in Merit Scholarships We salute all the young women in the Class of 2012! Graduates have earned more than $18.2 million in merit-based scholarships and have been accepted to more than 119 colleges and universities nationwide.

A total of 98 percent of the 163 members in the class are going on to college, many of them representing the first generation in their family attending a university.

Sports SPRING

Varsity Track & Field – The track and field team powered through the season and broke three school records in the spring, advancing to the Ohio state tournament for the first time ever with its sprint relay team! The sprinting team knocked out school records in the 4 x 200, sprint medley relay, and 200m.

To make it to the Ohio state tournament, the Jaguars earned a score of 163 points at the school’s first-ever track and field district championship. In the Ohio tournament, the sprint relay team quartet of juniors MaryKate Caja, Gab Leon, Brenna McGrath and sophomore Becca Sedlak finished in 2nd place in the 4 x 200m finals with a time of 1:43.89 – a school record by more than a second!

Also competing well for the team was the middle distance and distance groups who stepped up their competitiveness this year. Anchored by Mary Kate Chambers ‘12, this group ran faster than in recent years. Sophomores Rachel McGuire and Maddie Zimmerman have proven to be very versatile, as did junior Emilee Armbruster.

Pole Vault made a strong return this season with Maresa Wolosz ’03 coming back to coach her former event.

Senior Maggey Urban not only picked up where she left off in the shot put, but also emerged as the team’s top discus thrower, earning a varsity letter in both events.

season with a 10-16 record, but had several season highpoints, including a 3-1 win against St. Vincent-St. Mary in Akron, where Brenna Heffernan ’15 pitched 13 innings for a 3-1 victory. In the sectionals against Lakewood High School, the bats came alive and the Jags won 9-3 in a very exciting game.

Four girls batted over .300 and one over .400. Ashley Klimczyk ’13 batted .300 with 15 stolen bases, Theresa Becker ’12, hit .322 with 3 home runs, Mary Caraballo ’15, hit .333, Sydney Ashby ’12, batted .382 with one home run and 18 stolen bases and Shannon Scaggs ’14, hit .442 with one home run for the year.

Four Athletes Commit to College Programs

finished the season with a record placing them second in the state! As current backto-back 2010 and 2011 State Champions, the Jaguar Rugby team had a 6-1 winning record and an impressive third-place finish at the Midwest Championship Tournament, where some of the best teams in the country competed. Their only loss this season was against their most formidable local opponent, Lakewood High School.

Congratulations to Lauren Peyton ’12 who was voted MVP by SJA coaching staff and honored by Rugby Ohio. Lauren received this recognition for her outstanding runs, tries scored, and her obliterating tackles.

After outstanding athletic careers at SJA, four senior athletes have committed to participate in athletic programs at four notable colleges.

Basketball player Celine Mangan signed to play at Notre Dame College in South Euclid next year. Celine plans to study Early Childhood Education at the college.

Swimmer Emma Ryan committed her talents in the pool to the College of Charleston in Charleston, S.C. Emma plans to major in Business Administration.

Volleyball player Hannah Smith committed to Walsh University in North Canton. Hannah is undecided on her major.

Cross Country athlete Mary Kate Chambers committed to Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y. Mary Kate plans to study Business and Marketing.

reputation of the SJA Rowing Club continued to grow this spring. Thirty-six rowers strong, the SJA Navy was able to field more boats at all regattas and showed solid progress in its second year against competitive and well established teams from across the Midwest.

Rowers competed in four regattas leading up to the Midwest Championship in Cincinnati, including three in Ohio and one in Orchard Lake, Michigan.

Highlights were wins by the Novice 8+ and Novice 4+ boats at Lake Milton, OH, the Jaguars winning four out of five events on the Cuyahoga River against local rival Shaker Heights, and wins by two Novice 4+ boats at Lake Dillon.

The crowning event for the season was a third-place finish of the novice lightweight 4+ boat at the Midwest Scholastic Rowing Championship in Cincinnati. For the second year in a row, SJA novice 4+ lightweight rowers Kristen Hegeman ’13, Nicole Hegeman ’13, Sarah Johanek ’15, Charlotte Rouse ’15 and coxswain Morgan Clark ’15 stood on the podium following qualifying races that pitted 45 teams from six states against each other in two days of racing.

Alumnae S p o t light : Leaders in Mary Finnegan ‘80

Mary Finnegan regards her job in finance as challenging and rewarding. She would love to encourage fellow SJA women to pursue a similar career path.

“There are not enough women in finance today,” she says, “It can be a great job for those who enjoy math and analytical challenges.

As a bonus, careers in finance often include international travel since so many companies today have global operations.”

Mary graduated from Cleveland State

University in 1984 with a B.S.B.A. in accounting. She went on to earn an MBA in finance from New York University in 1989 and spent more than 10 years in banking in New York City.

Since 1998, she has handled treasury duties and investor relations for MettlerToledo International Inc. A Fortune 1000 entity, the company has revenues of $2 billion and does business in 35 countries. In her role with Mettler-Toledo, Mary oversees and provides strategic direction for debt financing, cash flow forecasting, treasury operations and communication with analysts and investors.

“Among other responsibilities, my duties require strong analytical skills,” she shares. “I am naturally curious and want to understand how things fit together or how one item influences something else.”

Her investor relations responsibilities require clear, concise communication with Wall Street and shareholders. “I tend to be straightforward and direct in my communication style, which has served me well in this position,” she says.

Mary credits SJA for setting high academic

expectations and teaching students how to study and learn. “If you wanted to do well, you had to figure out what was important and make sure you spent your energy on the important items,” she recalls. “There was also a premise that anything could be learned or figured out if you spent the time and energy on it. To have the ability and confidence to figure out a solution can be powerful, and I give SJA high marks for instilling this discipline in me at an early stage.”

Mary also affectionately recalls her time on her alma mater’s inaugural tennis team. “It was great to be part of establishing this sport at SJA,” she says.

Mary has been married almost 23 years to husband Carl Faller. The couple lives in Columbus, Ohio, with their three children, Carolyn, 15, and twins, John and Bob, 12.

Her late mother was Ann Cusick Finnegan ’53, who taught at SJA from 1978-1985, and her sisters are Nora Finnegan ’78 and Patricia Finnegan ’79.

Since graduating from SJA, Mary has lived in New York City, Europe and Columbus. “All great places to live, but Cleveland is still where my heart is,” she admits.

Patricia Gaul ‘76 You might say that Patty Gaul pursued a finance career due to the influence of her parents. Her father, by example, taught her to work hard. Her mother constantly encouraged her to pursue her dreams.

“My father had a business background and encouraged us to pursue accounting,” explains Patty. “There are eight kids in my family, and four of us ended up in accounting!”

Patty is the Senior Vice President of Finance & Administration and General Counsel for Playhouse Square Foundation.

She’s been with the nonprofit for 28 years, having joined in 1984 as its controller.

“It was my first job in Cleveland after I returned from Washington D.C., where I spent four years after graduating from Georgetown University working for former Senators Ted Kennedy and Bill Bradley,” she says.

Patty graduated from Georgetown in 1980 with a B.S.B.A., majoring in accounting, and became a CPA. She earned a law degree from Cleveland State University’s Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in 1993.

In her current role, she oversees finance, human resources and administration for Playhouse Square Foundation. Patty is involved in the foundation’s real estate

Finance Eileen Grady Stenerson ‘80

A Senior Vice President at Wells Fargo, Eileen Grady Stenerson works in a unique segment of the banking industry known as opportunity finance. “It’s a sector where the philosophy ‘Doing good while doing well’ comes into play,” she says.

Eileen is responsible for the bank’s relationship with national mission-driven financial institutions. Corporations, insurance companies, foundations and banks provide funding for these institutions to invest in real

development initiatives from both a finance and legal standpoint.

She credits her parents with inspiring her career success. “They were very strong role models. They made incredible sacrifices to give us all a great education,” she says.

That included eight Catholic high school educations, plus seven of the eight children attended Georgetown. In fact, her parents received special recognition from the university because, from 1975-1998, there were anywhere from one to three Gaul children continuously enrolled at Georgetown.

In 2008 Patty was awarded Crain’s Cleveland Business CFO of the Year for the

estate projects that serve low to moderate income populations. By financing projects like quality affordable housing, high-performing charter schools and community health facilities, the underserved are positively affected.

This type of social impact resonates with Eileen. “I get the best of both worlds — using my business skills and benefitting from the emotional lift that comes from knowing I help disadvantaged people and places,” she shares.

She credits good listening skills as being integral to her role. “I enjoy listening to what organizations are trying to accomplish, the obstacles, the opportunities, etc., and then strategizing how my financial institution can help make those ideas a reality,” she explains.

Eileen graduated from Miami University in Ohio with a Bachelor of Science with a concentration in finance. She then earned her MBA from Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Business.

She regards financial services — and banking in particular — as a diverse industry where women can build rewarding careers and have some variety in their roles along the way. Eileen has worked in several different areas of banking, including

international banking, commercial real estate and large corporate banking.

Over the years she has been asked to speak at national industry conferences about community development. She also volunteers on several boards and advisory councils specific to the field.

Eileen looks back at her years at SJA with much affection. Many of the girls she met freshmen year remain her best friends today. She particularly enjoyed the fatherdaughter nights and French class with Marie Koeth, CSJ and she’s forever thankful that she took a typing class, considering the prevalence of computers today.

Her family has a long-standing history with the school beginning with her father, Jack Grady, who attended first and second grade back when SJA enrolled boys at the grade school level. Her niece Kiera Grady ’15 is a current student. Her mother, Veronica Carey Grady ’50, aunt Kay Vanderwyst Carey ’45, and cousins Anne Marie Carey Pecon ’71 and Mary Kay Carey Flament ’76 are all graduates.

She has been married to her husband John since 1989. They have lived in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Nonprofits-Arts & Culture category. She is a member of the Leadership Cleveland Class of 2012, a nine-month program which fosters civic responsibility and community engagement among Greater Cleveland’s leaders.

Several things stand out to Patty about her high school years. She recalls the CSJs’ commitment to the students as nothing less than amazing. She remembers SJA providing lots of opportunities, no matter what a student’s interests were.

“I also remember being surrounded by smart girls who kept you at the top of your game,” Patty says.

She credits SJA with instilling the message that you have a responsibility to give back. To that end, Patty volunteers for Georgetown doing student interviews for the Cleveland area, and she serves on the finance and/or audit committees for St. Ignatius of Antioch parish, the Downtown Cleveland Alliance, and the Greater Cleveland Partnership. Her sisters Eileen Gaul Isdaner ’78 and Kathleen Gaul Burke ’81 also are graduates.

Patty lives in Rocky River and in her leisure time, enjoys music, swimming and boating, reading and – of course – live theater.

Graduate Wants SJA Legacy to Continue

E

ven 43 years after graduating from Saint Joseph Academy, Dianne Parulis ’69 still has vivid memories of her junior year “Current Events” class. “Sister Ruth Rodgers, CSJ (Sister Sebastian) opened my eyes to the world around me. She encouraged us to read newspapers and magazines, including

editorials, columnists and letters to the editors.

To this day, I read those sections of newspapers and magazines!” she shared.

Dianne now lives in Chicago, far away from Rocky River Drive. But each month she remembers her alma mater with a scholarship donation. She hopes it will enable other girls to enjoy the equivalents of “Current Events” and the classes she loved during her four years at the Academy.

“In today’s world, with the trivialization of the news and the dumbing down of America, a good education that encourages critical thinking is a must. When I was finally able to make charitable contributions, SJA was at the top of my list. My parents worked two jobs at a time to send their children to Catholic schools.

Seeing as I don’t have children of my own, I feel my regular monthly contributions to the SJA’s scholarship fund will help girls whose parents sacrifice to send them to the Academy. It also keeps my parents’ legacy alive.”

graduation, she attended the University of Dayton and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1973. She moved to Chicago shortly after graduation to work at a Fortune 500 insurance company.

“I worked as a dictaphone typist (yes, even with a college degree most of the jobs available for women at that time were clerical jobs – it was a good thing I took the personal typing class at SJA!). However, you can’t keep a good Academy graduate down! I worked my way up from typist to Midwest regional human resource manager in about four years. I stayed at the company for 14 years.

I am currently employed at a Chicago-based auction company.”

The one constant during Dianne’s working years is the realization that SJA provided an excellent foundation for her future success.

“When I went off college and began my freshman courses, I realized what a fine education I received at SJA!” she shared. “I will always be grateful. An excellent education is the best way to lift people up!”

Spring Scholarship Luncheon Brings Friends Together for a Good Cause

ewly minted alumnae from the Class of 2012 are keeping the connection alive by creating the Class of 2012 Endowed Scholarship. The graduates donated $4,000 for an endowed scholarship to help future “sisters” enjoy the benefits and joys of an SJA education. “When fully funded, it will provide a $500 annual scholarship in the name of our class,” shared Claire Konys ’12, a member of the Class of 2012 Leadership Team.

Academy,” added Morgan Draves ’12, also a member of the leadership team. “In addition, we asked each member of our graduating class to donate either $12 or $20.12 a year for the next five years to fully fund this scholarship.”

In a second act of generosity, the Class of 2012 donated $1,000 toward a new school bus. The bus will carry the number “2012” on its side.

“With both of these gifts, particularly the scholarship, I am hoping to enable more girls to fully experience all I’ve enjoyed and loved for the past four years at Saint Joseph Academy,” added Claire.

utstanding faculty and staff were honored at the 2012 Honors Convocation ceremony.

The Sursum Corda Award is given to a faculty member who lives a life that exemplifies the Saint Joseph Academy mission and the charism of the Congregation of St. Joseph.

It was awarded this year to Business Technology department chair Peggy Casselberry, who retired this year after 37 years at SJA. The Sister Edith Frantz, CSJ Award was given to Intervention Department Chair Lisa Gregorski. This award recognizes a faculty member whose actions have dramatically influenced the life of the school community in a positive way

Paws for Pride Day Another (Loud) Success!

T

he annual (and very loud) Paws for Pride Day was a huge success … as always … as students celebrated school spirit and class pride. This celebration is a day when everyone dresses in their class colors and celebrate their love of school, classmates and singing and dancing.

This year, sophomores won the hallway decorating competition with their striking and very yellow tribute to decades of Rock ‘n’ Roll. All the hallways were clever, with the seniors giving a nod to the “end of the world,” freshmen taking on a boot camp theme and juniors, playing off their graduation year of ’13, creating a scary Halloweenish red tribute. Seniors won the window decoration category with a theme of “ground breaking.” With a final win with their well-choreographed dancing and singing, the Class of 2012 won the always hotly competitive cheering contest and became the overall champions of Paws for Pride for the third time – an unprecedented “three-peat”! Even the faculty and staff joined in the fun with a flash mob dance!

Madeline Lammermeier, CSJ ’44 was honored for 15 years of service at Age Line, an adult activity center in Cleveland that provides day care for mentally challenged adults. Among Sister Madeline’s duties are offering a listening ear and a loving heart to the adult participants.

Jeanne Knoerle, SP ’45 received one of the inaugural 2012 Women of Influence awards, which honored eight prominent Wabash Valley women for their leadership, vision and courage.

The Sisters of Providence nominated Sister Jeanne in honor of her contributions to their congregation and the community.

1950s

1960s

Sally Conway Kilbane ’60, former State Representative for Ohio, was inducted into the Ohio State and Local Tax Hall of Fame at the 21st annual Ohio Tax Conference in Columbus.

This award honors those who have contributed to the development, administration, or operation of Ohio’s state and local tax system. Sally was a driving force in forging the comprehensive tax reform package of 2005 that was enacted in the biennial budget bill that year.

Cynthia Drennan ’65 has been named the executive director of the SSJ Charitable Fund in Parkersburg, West Virginia. Her 15 years of experience in philanthropic work brings a wealth of skills and experiences to this ministry.

Cynthia is a CSJ associate and has a long and close connection with the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Geraldine Soat Brown ’68 became the presiding magistrate judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Geraldine’s goal is to support her colleagues in maintaining judicial excellence, independence and collegiality.

Maureen Brady Johnson ’69 is one of the winners at the 6th annual Six Women Playwriting Theatre Festival in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Maureen also writes an award-winning column called “Along the Way” for the Oberlin News Tribune and is a member of the International Center for Women Playwrights.

Donna Cremona Bubnick N’69 graduated with an MBA, HR in October of 2011 as a Student of Distinction from Keller Graduate School of Business Management. She is the CEO of DMA Billing & Collection in Lynchburg, Virginia, a published author, and in the process of opening a small café and lunch delivery service in southwestern Virginia.

Michelle Zimmerman Palumbo ’99 married David Palumbo on September 3, 2011.

Patricia Pekar ’75 retired in June from the Scioto County (Ohio) Child Support Enforcement Agency after serving 20 years as the agency attorney, and 30 years of public service.

Kerri Chirdon Wilke ’99 married Christopher Wilke on April 21, 2012 in Maumee, Ohio. They now live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where Kerri is a physical therapist.

Victoria Potelicki Vance N’75, an attorney at Tucker, Ellis and West, was recently appointed the vice-chair of the Insurance Law Section of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association.

2000s

Diane Dever ’77 was featured as one of the longtime vendors in a special West Side Market supplement of the The Plain Dealer for her business called the Irene Dever dairy stand, first bought by her mother, Irene.

She works there with her three siblings.

1980s

Rita Ginley Andolsen ’82, long-time news executive at WKYC, has taken a new position at the station to enhance their efforts in community outreach, creative local programming and successful special events. Rita is now responsible for designing and implementing advocacy projects and launching new community partnerships.

Diane Strojin ’83 recently received the 2012 YWCA Women of Professional Excellence Award. She was honored for her passion, drive and commitment to her community. Diane is a Senior Vice President at Huntington National Bank.

Maureen Gump Bruno ’85 received a Master’s of Education from Heidelberg University, where she was the recipient of the Outstanding MAE Student Award for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Maureen is currently an Intervention Specialist at Maumee High School in Maumee, Ohio.

Katherine Shaughnessy Michael ’88 is on tour to promote her new book, New Crewel: The Motif Collection, and will be teaching crewel techniques at various workshops on her tour throughout the country.

1990s

Stacy Barlock DeChant ’91 married Rick DeChant at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas on July 23, 2011. Stacy and Rick enjoyed a wonderful honeymoon on Moorea Island, French Polynesia.

Mary Kovach ’96 has been very busy with community involvement, serving on two Boards: a Foster Child Enrichment Council and Miami University Business Advisory Technology Board.

Mary also teaches two business classes for Miami University. In addition, she sponsors four orphaned children in Cancun, Mexico, through Back2Back Ministries, which has included personal visits to her sponsored children in addition to financial support.

Lauren Murphy Radford ’00 married Matthew Radford on April 21, 2012. Her maid of honor was her sister, Sarah Murphy ’98.

Maureen Kerwin Wentz ’00 married Benjamin Wentz on September 17, 2011. Maureen is currently employed with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District as a Special Education teacher for students with multiple disabilities.

Mary Beth Polevacik Wiseman ’00 married Christopher Wiseman on April 21, 2012. Her sisters, Kathryn Polevacik ’08 and Emily Polevacik ’08, were in the wedding party.

Lindsay Wolff ’05 came in second in a field of 78 runners at the sixth annual Neighborhood Alliance Home Run for the Homeless 5K on April 28, 2012.

Kelli Maloney-Stallard Briggs ’05 married Scott Briggs on September 24, 2011. They live in Medina.

Brigid Dober Danziger ’06 married Benjamin Danziger at St. Mary’s Church in Berea, on April 20, 2012. Her maid of honor was Natalie Rodriquez ’06. Marie Dantio ’06 was a bridesmaid.

Emily Dydo ’08 graduated from Xavier University with a BA in English and will be attending Carnegie Mellon University graduate school for Professional Writing.

Elizabeth Gaertner ’08 will be serving as a missionary at Camp Gray in Reedsburg, Wisconsin for the 201213 camp year, leading spiritual, environmental and team building retreats for students in grades 2 to 12.

Brooke Hamilton ’09 has received many honors this spring related to her golfing performance at BaldwinWallace College. Among her honors are being selected for this year’s Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference team, helping her team to finish first in the 2012 Ohio Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, and carrying a team-best 3.97 grade average in English and Philosophy.

Zaina Leon ’09 recently won the Saga Fur fashion design competition. She will be flown to Denmark in August to spend a week studying fur techniques, then return to the Parsons School of Design in the fall to create her senior collection which will be funded by Saga Furs and produced in Hong Kong. In February of 2013, she will be flown to Hong Kong to meet with the Fur Federation and present her collection to a panel of industry professionals in New York and Hong Kong.

n elections held in March, the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland chose a new leadership team for a four-year term that began in June. SJA graduate Susan Durkin, OSU ’81 is the new President of the Ursuline Sisters. Sister Susan has served the past six years as the Ursulines’ Director of Development. Sister Susan follows Angelita Zawada, OSU ’60, who passed away in September 2011. “My education at SJA has served me well and will certainly help me lead with compassion and strength in the years to come,” shared Sister Susan, whose mother Barbara McEntee Durkin ’53 and sister Beth Durkin ’78 also are graduates.
