Letter from the President Dear Alumnae, Parents and Friends of Saint Joseph Academy, It was a Saturday morning in April, while checking my email at home, that I clicked on the photograph that graces the cover of this issue of UPDATE. It seemed that I had just wished our students a safe journey, and here they were already standing on the Great Wall of China! I could hardly contain my excitement for them.

Just a few weeks earlier, another group of students attended an audience with Pope Benedict XVI in Rome. Wow!!

aint Joseph Academy, an accredited, comprehensive Catholic high school founded in 1890 by the Congregation of Saint Joseph, exists for the purpose of providing quality education for young women of diverse backgrounds.

Central to the life of our school is a thrust for peace and justice in a community which promotes love of God, respect for self, others and the environment through living out the Gospel message.

We encourage each student to develop positive values and to articulate her thinking so that she can be a leader making constructive contributions to society. We endeavor to nurture the talents of each young woman so she becomes a woman of faith with global perspective who is striving for integrity and preparing for life.

Why is Saint Joseph Academy offering these international opportunities? It is because we are committed to providing today’s Academy students with an education to prepare them well for the global economy that is the reality of the 21st century. These young women already live in a world of instant communications. It is appropriate and necessary that our students also become comfortable in a multi-cultural world. If we have done our jobs properly, these young women will view the world through the lens of the teachings of the Congregation of Saint Joseph, through a lens of unity – “that all be one.”

(John 17:21) Imagine the six young Sisters of the Congregation, arriving from the city of Lyon to the “New World” in 1836, as they first worked with the Native American children along the Mississippi River. What a different culture greeted them: language, customs, and food. But their response to God’s call to “serve the dear neighbor” gave them the courage to journey for weeks crossing the Atlantic aboard a sailing ship. Today, the direct flight to France takes less than eight hours. Although the modes of transportation have changed, the answer to God’s call remains the same – to serve every dear neighbor without distinction, so that all may be united with God, each other and all creation. That is at the heart of a Saint Joseph Academy education.

We were especially delighted when one of our faculty members, Theresa Hafner, CSJ, professed her final vows in March. We celebrated this important occasion on May 1st, the feast of St. Joseph the Worker. Sister Theresa reflected on her decision as a woman of today committing her life to God. What a teachable moment for our entire school community!

As we re-charge our batteries this summer for the new academic year ahead, we reflect on our many blessings. We ask that you keep the Saint Joseph Academy community in your prayers, especially the graduates of the Class of 2008, as we remember all of you with a grateful heart.

The Literacy Initiative at SJA: Writing Literacy (Second in a Series)

When teaching students how to write, the majority of secondary school teachers in this country follow the tradition of formal or academic essay writing. While the skills associated with academic writing are undoubtedly invaluable, in order to prepare students to write in the real world of the 21st century, we also realize the profound importance of informal and technical writing, and have added these assignments across the curriculum. This article is the second in a series about the Literacy Initiative at Saint Joseph Academy and provides an overview of our focus on writing.

Why teach technical writing to students?

According to Christine LaRocco, author of Strategic Writing Across the Curriculum in Grades 7–12, “To respond to the public outcry that workers cannot write to meet even the fundamental requirements of their positions, teachers must reevaluate the role of writing in every classroom. Business and industry are demanding that schools train students in writing beyond the typical essay.”1 In addition to the writing-tolearn activities (i.e.; journals, study guides, etc.) and the learning-to-write activities (i.e.; research papers, essay tests, etc.) that teachers typically assign in the classroom, students can benefit greatly from practicing technical writing (i.e.; proposals, résumes, e-mails, etc.) This is the type of writing that they will be exposed to as professionals in any career. LaRocco states that “relevant [and rigorous] writing assignments provide students with the practice in real-world thinking skills that will be expected of them in both higher education and in the workplace.”2

What is Saint Joseph Academy doing to increase writing literacy?

In addition to increasing the number and varying the types of texts that our students read, modeling reading strategies in the classroom, and enhancing our English curriculum, we are also working toward writing weekly in all classes and writing research papers in all classes.3 Again, the organizational and analytical skills that students learn from formal academic writing are crucial and must be practiced often in order to promote student success in post-secondary education settings and to build the foundation for successful technical writing. Also, we are encouraging all of our teachers to give students less formal, technical writing assignments on a weekly basis. Weekly writing assignments, such as project proposals in business classes, incident reports in science classes, and instruction manuals in math classes, not only expose students to the various types and purposes of technical writing, but these also help them become more engaged and familiar with the content about which they are writing.

During the 2007–2008 school year, our faculty received training in both academic and technical writing assignments and assessments. Christine LaRocco visited Saint Joseph Academy to share some of the theories and highlights from her middle and high school writing manual, Strategic Writing Across the Curriculum in Grades 7–12. In addition, Kelly Mikovich Webb J’87, Assistant Professor of Technical Writing

and Composition at the University of Akron, returned to Saint Joseph Academy to share with the faculty some of the practical strategies she uses in the college classroom to develop student writing. During each of these presentations, our faculty learned how to refine the academic and technical writing assignments that they present to students, and how to tailor the guidelines and rubrics used to assess these assignments.

One of our goals for the Literacy Initiative is “to implement a writing program in a meaningful, productive, and progressive manner that trains students to adapt writing in a variety of settings and for a multitude of purposes.”4 In the next issue of UPDATE, we will focus on information literacy.

SJA students travel to Italy and China

This spring, SJA students traveled to Italy and China on educational tours. Mr. Adam Kollin, our Latin teacher who chaperoned the trip to Italy said, “Visiting these destinations really helps students appreciate the significance of the topics they study in the classroom.” These experiences are part of the 21st century education curriculum at Saint Joseph Academy. “We are thrilled to be able to expose our young women to the world,” said to Principal Audrey Menard.

The group, composed of SJA juniors and seniors, began with visits to famous sites at the Spanish Stairs, the Trevi Fountain, and the Pantheon. “I liked being able to see something I had heard about and seen pictures of for so long,” junior Kelly Gallagher said of the visit to the massive amphitheater where the Romans held gladiator games. Following up, junior Courtney Brecher remarked, “Seeing the Pope was an amazing, once in a lifetime experience!”

In March, twenty-nine SJA Latin students spent Holy Week abroad as they traveled to Italy on an educational tour of Rome and its landmarks. During the trip, students visited the ruins of ancient Rome and the majesty of Vatican City, which included a general audience with Pope Benedict XVI. “This trip provided the students with an opportunity to encounter firsthand the richness of ancient Roman history and culture,” according to Mr. Kollin.

The trip was by all accounts a success, with all the participants exhausted and thrilled by this unique opportunity. “I signed up for this trip to experience the culture I read about every day in Latin class. All the things I had to imagine became real in Rome,” commented junior Christina Pintenich.

Another trip with a similar itinerary is planned for Easter break in 2009.

Additionally, nineteen students accompanied by parents, friends and members of the Board of Directors spent ten days exploring

China. “We braved torrential downpours of rain and walked through TianAnMen Square, the Forbidden City and several of the Olympic sites,” said Dean of Women and tour chaperone, Emily Hanson J’99.

The students say they will never forget the many historical sites they toured, particularly the Great Wall which left a huge impression on all of them. The trip was put together by Saint Joseph Academy and the United States-China Education Council (USCEC) The group traveled to five Chinese cities: Beijing, Changchun, Suzhou, Tongli and Shanghai. They met with Chinese educators and students, and visited Changchun, the home of Mrs. Xinming Tong who taught Mandarin Chinese at Saint Joseph Academy

this past year through a grant from the United States State Department for teachers of critical languages.

While visiting Mrs. Tong’s school, the students and guests were greeted by a huge welcome banner. They were able to observe and interact with the local students in classes, play and talk with and even practice their Chinese by singing songs together.

They day ended with an assembly held to honor the group’s visit and to help expose SJA students to Chinese traditions and culture. Sophomore Rachele Morino noted, “It was really interesting to spend time at Mrs. Tong’s school. The students were really nice: we even exchanged email addresses so we can keep in touch.”

This was an thrilling trip for students, parents and guests but for freshman Dominique Williams, going to China was not only her first trip out of the country, but her first trip outside of Ohio. “I didn’t really feel like I was in China until I saw the Great Wall.

The people were really great. They really liked us, and we really liked them,” she said.

Women’s Leadership Symposium

Saint Joseph Academy held its first annual Women’s Leadership Symposium—an expansion of the Career Day from previous years.

Barbara J. Danforth, Esq., President and Chief Executive Officer of YWCA of Greater Cleveland, began the symposium by delivering a charismatic keynote address.

Mayors Pamela E. Bobst of Rocky River, Eileen Ann Birt Patton J’72 of Fairview Park, and Deborah L. Sutherland of Bay Village, participated in two interactive panel discussions on public service with the students, moderated by Idaliz Baez J’09, Theresa Lohn J’08, Paige Pierce J’08, and Madie Szaller J’09.

During each of the sessions, these women spoke about the rewards and challenges of their careers, the importance of higher education, and how students can cultivate their talents to become passionate and influential leaders for the 21st century.

Kayla Milligan J’09 attended a session with Maria Gigante J’93, an award-winning, independent filmmaker living in New York City: “It was amazing to listen to Ms. Gigante!

She’s so young, yet she has accomplished so much in an industry that’s really difficult to succeed in, especially for women.”

Jacklyn J. Chisholm, Ph.D., Vice President of Planning and Institutional Relations at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, and Sherri A. Crahen, Ph.D., Dean of Students at John Carroll University, spoke to the seniors about what to expect at college next year.

Forty-four local women, half of whom are Saint Joseph Academy or Nazareth Academy alumnae and members of the Congregation of St. Joseph, graciously volunteered their time as guest speakers. Mary Ann Fischer J’66, Saint Joseph Academy’s Alumnae Director, remarked that the symposium was “a wonderful opportunity for our current students to learn from and experience the accomplishments of our alumnae.”

In February, the Saint Joseph Academy PreEngineering II students placed 3rd in the Lego Robotics Competition at Case Western Reserve University. Seniors Jackie Boehnlein, Cate Felder J’08, Grace Gilles J’08, Bridget Madden J’08 and Kari Vozar J’08 and juniors Jaimie Kasper J’09 and Yesenia Linares J’09 participated in the competition. According to Pre-Engineering teacher, Ms. Jennifer Watson, “This is one of the tougher competitions in the area. Many of the best Pre-Engineering programs have teams that compete, so we’re very proud of our third place finish.”

The competition, which is part of Engineering Week at Case Western Reserve University, features Northeast Ohio high school students competing against each other for prizes and awards. The contest features two robots going “head-to-head” in the designated arena. The robots sense light and race as quickly as possible to reach the brighter of two randomly lighted arena wall sections. The first to reach the target area surrounding the brighter of the two lighted sections will score a point. The robots continue to compete against each other until the last robot standing wins.

April was busy for the Pre-Engineering I students. The Pre-Engineering I class went to Shelby, Ohio to compete in the Formula One Technology Challenge. This was the state competition for Ohio high schools, with the winner going on to the national competition

in Orlando, Florida. “Although we didn’t win, we were pleased placing in the top ten. Our girls received numerous compliments about the professional way that they conducted themselves,” according to Pre-Engineering teacher John Lesko.

The Saint Joseph Academy “Jaguar Rumble” team, consisting of Corrine Stillman J’08, Michelle Kahl J’09 and Megan Masella J’09, and Kathe Pocker J’10, Emily Polk J’10 and Gayle Spinazze J’10, was the only Catholic high school to compete in this statewide competition.

Teams were required to design, manufacture and test their own Formula One race car using a Computer Aided Design (CAD) program, wind tunnel technology and a Computerized Numeric Control (CNC) machine. Each team at the competition was judged on an oral presentation, visual display and evidence of teamwork, while their car was judged on overall design, aerodynamics, speed and manufacture quality. Upon reflection, Megan Masella said, “I enjoyed participating in the F1 Competition. It was challenging, but the sense of accomplishment when it was completed was well worth it!”

This is the fourth year that Saint Joseph Academy has offered a sequence of PreEngineering courses. Saint Joseph Academy encourages its students to pursue areas of science and engineering.

Paws for Pride day at Saint Joseph Academy has brought class competition to a final day of fun each May for the past six years. The judges decide, the points are tallied and the Paws for Pride

spirit award is announced. Although the battle may be fierce at times, this event unites the school during the many activities and events sponsored throughout the year and on this fun-spirited day of competition and games.

Leadershop 2008 for Grade School Students

Leadershop 2008 at the Academy hosted nearly 100 6th & 7th grade girls from 22 middle schools and grade schools from around the area.

Did you know that if you search the Internet for “leadership,” 834 million sites are referenced? If you searched for “women leaders,” you would receive 458 million references. Based on these figures, there is an obvious desire for information on effective leadership. There is also some disparity as we narrow our search for leadership by women. But Saint Joseph Academy is working diligently to do our part to close that gap!

In early May, nearly 100 guests spent the day at the Academy for “Leadershop 2008,” our annual leadership workshop for 6th and 7th grade students. The workshop brought these young leaders together to focus on identifying and developing leadership skills.

A presentation was made by the SJA Assertiveness Training Team, comprised of current Academy students in various grades. Through role-playing and interactive discussion with the audience, the Assertiveness Training Team talked about the differences between assertive, aggressive, and passive behavior. Discussions focused

on positive decision-making, how to react to those who encourage poor choices, and speaking in an assertive manner. The day concluded with the participants setting goals for themselves, touring the campus, and making group presentations.

Summer started on a high note for SJA’s a cappella ensemble Cecilia’s Song, who sang the National Anthem at Progressive Field in June.

The spring season brought many fantastic student performances in the form of concerts and our spring play. In April, a cast of eight and a crew of many put on a riotous performance of Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple: The Female Version, led by acclaimed local director Kevin Joseph Kelly. This fun-filled production headed by senior Cate Felder as Olive Madison and sophomore Amanda Drapac-Novotny as Florence Unger, led to many sore bellies after an evening of laughter.

Next, the concerts came fast and furious with four major concerts in three weeks.

Our music department combined forces with the young men of Saint Ignatius High School in the bi-annual event called “Musicollage.” This unique concert featured both schools’ choral and instrumental ensembles in a steady stream of music with no break for applause until the very end.

The month of May brought three consecutive Thursday night concerts,

starting with the Choral Concert, followed by the Instrumental Concert, and then the Jazz and Cabaret Night. An evening of scenes and monologues by our Introduction to Acting class was also staged.

The performances didn’t stop at the end of the school year, however. Our a cappella ensemble, Cecilia’s Song, was honored to be chosen to sing the National Anthem at Progressive Field for the Cleveland Indians game on June 10th. Finally, four students in our jazz band experienced a rare and special opportunity: on June 28th, a free concert was held at Impett Park in West Park by the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, featuring our junior saxophonists: Kristen Herrmann, Mary Kate Kennedy, Jessica Louis and Maggie McGuire. The lucky girls played a quartet on their own, then joined the CJO for a three-song set!

We commend all of our students (and their families who support them) for their willingness to share their wonderful talents throughout the greater Cleveland area!

Softball Team Posts Two No-Hitters The Varsity Fast Pitch team finished the 2008 softball season with several events that are unique in the history of SJA Fast Pitch.

For the first time, 2 different pitchers threw no-hitters in the same season. Sophomore Maddy Paulett pitched a 10-0 win against Cleveland Central Catholic and junior Lauren Kluth threw a 10-0 win against Lutheran West.

Other note worthy events this season include a new single season stolen base record by freshman Nikki Carpenter (40), the first “over the fence” home run by an SJA player – Junior Lauren Kluth vs.

Youngstown Cardinal Mooney, and a dramatic come-from-behind win against Midpark. The Jaguars rallied from 2 down in the bottom of the seventh to win on a bases loaded single by senior Caitlin Messina. Playing at our new “home” fields at Maplewood Park was a big lift to the team.

Thanks to our seniors who have dedicated so much time and energy over the last four years. They include Elizabeth Campion, Amy Grabiec, Rachel Hope, Ally McGuire, Caitlin Messina, and Corrine Stillman. At the younger levels, our JV team finished at 10-9 and our Freshmen team finished at 14-8. Head Coach Jim Weigand and Assistant Coach Carrie Vicker did a great job this season. Congratulations and thanks to all of our players and coaches!

Over 400 participate in Summer Camps This summer over 400 grade school students learned the techniques of serving a volleyball, driving to the basket, scoring soccer goals, singing, dancing, and performing on stage, and in the process, many of them made lots of new friends who may someday be their classmates here at Saint Joseph Academy.

According to Athletic Director Jill Satanek Garlock, J’95, “Most of our camps were filled to capacity. It was fun to watch the girls improve from day to day.”

Saint Joseph Academy has sponsors summer camps in soccer, basketball, volleyball, track and cross country as well as Summerstage, Two Weeks on Broadway and a Dance camp.

The training started in February with an impressive 60 girls trying out for the Saint Joseph Academy Rugby Club, which is only in its second year. By the season opener against Mayfield, the team was set with 44 athletes ready to scrum, ruck and tackle. The Jaguars crushed Mayfield 60-0 with the first team win.

The girls played their next game with heart but fell just points short of beating Parma.

The following two victories over Medina and Highland prepared the team to take on the state perennial power and undefeated Lakewood Rugby Club. Unfortunately, even after taunting their adversaries with a pregame Haka, the Jaguars were defeated. The league season ended with a 3-2 record and an invitation to

the Ohio Rugby State Tournament held at Kent State University.

For the second year in a row, SJA Rugby held their own at States beating Marysville 60-5.

The Marysville game also gave a chance for first year prop Melanie Gib to get “The Best Try of the Tournament Award” with a remarkable 60 meter run. Also acknowledged at the State Tournament for “Spirit of the Game” was senior Vanessa McCarthy. The Jaguars finished 4th in the state. The Jaguars will continue to play for fun over the summer in the Under 19’s representing the state of Ohio. Next year the girls look forward to playing SJA as rugby as a varsity sport.

Track This season was a challenging, yet successful one for the track and field team under coach and science teacher Fred Kieser. Based on last year’s success, the throwers were looked upon to lead the team and they did so all season long, placing high in every meet. Seniors Angelina Chuppa, Amy Palguta, and Samantha Sulzer set a school record in the discus relay. The distance events stepped up at the end of the season as well, qualifying two athletes to the Regional Meet in the 1600 and 3200m runs with juniors Kristin Karn and Kelly Gallagher, one runner in the 800, senior Rachel Borowski, and the 4 x 800m relay team of senior Rachel Borowski, juniors Kristin Karn and Kelly Gallagher, and sophomore Gabby Kreuz.

Despite having plenty of experience on the roster, the team had to depend on its depth to overcome injuries within the sprint corps. The jumps were exceptionally consistent all year, especially in the pole vault and high jump.

The pole vault crew scored at nearly every meet while the high jumpers qualified two for regionals for the first time ever senior Jordan Daugherty and freshman Katelyn Seroka.

Not to be outdone, the long jump, had its first regional qualifier in over five years in senior Jordan Daugherty. In all, over 90 athletes participated in meets this season, making the SJA track and field program the biggest in the school.

Mary Volk signs with Notre Dame College SJA senior Mary Volk signed to run cross country for Notre Dame College in South Euclid. Notre Dame coach Jim Schweickert said at the signing, “We are thrilled to keep talented athletes like Mary here in the Cleveland area.” Mary is the daughter of Patricia and Randall Volk of Lakewood.

Spirituality Faculty member, Theresa Hafner, CSJ Professes Final Vows SJA Alumnae Celebrate Jubilees There is always something to celebrate at Saint Joseph Academy, but one of the more joyous celebrations is that of St. Joseph and especially the women who have chosen to serve God and “the dear neighbor.” This spring, faculty member, Theresa Hafner, CSJ, made her final profession of vows as a Sister of the Congregation of St. Joseph. “It is within the shared experiences of our religious community,” reflected Sr. Theresa, “that I find the love, encouragement, and challenge to be faithful to the call of Jesus in the Gospel.”

Theresa Hafner CSJ, who teaches Theology at Saint Joseph Academy, made her Final Profession of Vows as a sister of the Congregation of St. Joseph this past March. Sr. Theresa is originally from the Akron, Ohio area, and is one of eight siblings. Prior to entering the Congregation of St. Joseph, she worked in the Marie Ellen Kuhel, OSU J’57, Kathleen Cooney, OSU N’60, Susan Durkin, OSU food service and health care industries.

Sr. Theresa entered the novitiate in September, 2002 and made her First Profession in August of 2004. As an adult, Sr. Theresa was active in several lay ministry opportunities in her parish.

She has an Associate Degree in Applied Science from Stark State College and last year received a B.A. in Religious Studies from John Carroll University. Her interests include scripture, ecology and the environment.

A Class Remembers You ate lunch together or she called you when she forgot the math homework. You often double dated for plays and dances at the Academy. Those friendships were important to you in the tumultuous teen years. Oh, how much more important do they become in your senior years as the decades pass!

As the class of 1948 gathers in the fall to mark 60 years since their graduation, they will be cherishing the memories of each other, more aware of what they meant to each other then and what they mean to each other now.

Another class of 1948 member, Carolyn Foote Ilg J’48, was taken from us this year. It was her husband John’s thoughtful response to his loss that was most impressive. He is supporting the endowment of a scholarship at Saint Joseph Academy in Carolyn’s name.

Patricia Potts Schirduan J’48 also recently funded a named scholarship which will provide assistance each year to a deserving student enrolled at the Academy.

When questioned regarding this generous gift to the school Pat replied, “I was aware of the escalating costs of Catholic education and wanted to do what I could to enable a needy student the valued opportunity that I had experienced.”

These gifts represents two of four endowed scholarships set up by the class of 1948 including an endowed fund in memory of Patricia Kane Gardner J’48 and Catherine VanLoozen Jackson J’48. Sheila Donnelly, M.D. J’66 Instructor in Medicine, Harvard Medical School Clinical Associate, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute-Gillette Center for Women’s Health Associate Physician, University of Massachusetts Medical Center, Worcester, M.A. Director of Oncology, Heywood Hospital According to Sheila Donnelly, M.D., she “is proof that not everything goes on your permanent record.” As a student at Saint Joseph Academy in the 1960s, Dr. Donnelly talked about her many visits to the Principal Sr. Brigid’s office and her reason for attending the Academy, “my mother and sisters graduated from the Academy and I always knew that’s where I wanted to go.” She also spoke about the sacrifice her parents made to give her and her sisters a Catholic education just as families today work hard to give the graduates the same opportunity, and their chance to follow their dreams.

She spoke of her French teacher, Elizabeth Joyce, CSJ whom the students referred to as “Mickey Moe” who told them, “to become what you are – only you are capable of that.” She continued, “We are 21st century women with many opportunities. In the dark ages schools like Harvard, Dartmouth and the University of Notre Dame didn’t even accept women. There were no women astronauts, Supreme Court judges or women running for president. As an old TV ad used to say ‘You’ve come a long way baby.’”

Sheila Donnelly, M.D. has had to give bad news to good people for many years as an oncologist. But in her work, she has seen Cancer bring out the best in people and their families as they rise to meet the challenges of combating their disease. She tells them not to miss any opportunities to express love, appreciation and gratitude to those you love, and to appreciate the present.

She ended saying, “Don’t look forward with fear, behind you with regret, but around you with awareness. “And remember the values that are the foundation of Saint Joseph Academy.”

Cynthia Daney Brogan J’69 Cindy graduated from Cleveland State University in 1983 and from the Executive MBA program at Case Western Reserve University in 1987. “I went to work at The Sherwin-Williams Co. as a treasury analyst,” she says.

Nearly twenty-one years later, Cindy is still with the company’s treasury department.

She landed the top job—Vice President/ Treasurer—in 2002.

She may be the first college-educated person in her family, but it took Cindy eight years after graduating from Saint Joseph Academy to take that step. “I finished high school, then the very next week, I started working in an administrative support role at The Illuminating Company,” she says.

In 1976, she accepted a position in the treasury department at MidlandRoss Corporation, a large, diversified manufacturer formerly headquartered in the Cleveland area. Two mentors there—a treasury analyst and the assistant treasurer— were instrumental in encouraging Cindy to go to college. “They were flexible with my work hours and, in time, promoted me to a para-professional position,” she says.

Her role as treasurer is to manage SherwinWilliams’ cash flow. Whether securing financing from a bank or determining how to invest or spend cash, it’s the highly strategic nature of the job—evaluating internal and external factors in order to make informed decisions—that she enjoys.

Cindy also devotes time to groups and causes that are important to her. She just completed a 6-year commitment on the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors for Saint Joseph Academy. She also serves in a non-board member role on the newly formed Investment Committee at the academy. And she recently accepted a board position for the Cleveland Scholarship Program.

According to Cindy, a high energy level, solid problem-solving skills, diplomacy and the ability to get to the heart of a problem in a fastpaced environment are the qualities that make her well-suited for her chosen profession.

Cindy remembers her time at SJA as filled with learning and discipline. “I came away from my high school experience with a sense of structure, equipped to recognize and handle life’s lessons,” she shares. Other fond memories include French class, biology class, and the spirit rallies that took place whenever there was something to celebrate.

In her tenure at Sherwin-Williams, she considers her greatest professional accomplishments those grounded in growth and improvement. “I enjoy and applaud the process of human capital development— when those people who work for me grow

“You need to assimilate information from a number of different sources fairly quickly,” she explains.

Suzanne Huber Ferrara J’87 Suzanne remembers Saint Joseph Academy as a place where she could “just be.”

“High school can be intimidating,” she says. “I can honestly say I felt no sense of peer pressure, didn’t experience put downs, and had no worries about cliques.”

She recalls a safe atmosphere led by open, approachable, supportive teachers. “The education, activities and friendships instilled in me a great sense of self and a strong reliance on my own independent thinking,” she says. She credits these traits with enabling her to achieve successes in college and in her chosen career: banking.

The first business classes Suzanne took in high school basic accounting, typing and letter writing helped her realize that business was the field she wished to pursue. “They helped me land my first office job while still a full-time college student,” she says.

While at John Carroll majoring in Business Management, Suzanne learned that International Management Group (IMG), a sports marketing agency headquartered in Cleveland, was looking for an intern in the accounting department. “I did journal entries for all the different transactions going through the company,” she says. She worked at IMG throughout college and discovered upon

“I’ve always loved numbers,” Karen says.

“I was one of only two women majoring in business at the time.” In fact, she had the distinction of being named a top 50 graduate from the John Carroll University Boler School of Business.

Taking all her years of financial experience and packaging that with a talent for analyzing qualitatively and quantitatively, Karen and her husband of 26 years, Jack, started their own wealth management firm in 2007. Kleinhenz & Associates specializes in business and economic consulting.

When Karen was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2004, she told the audience that no one from her graduating class would have predicted she’d be standing up there someday.

“I started high school at 12 and graduated at 16,” says Karen. “So I did not have the typical high school experience.”

She graduated from John Carroll University with a business degree and went to work at Key Corp. for 25 years. She started as a credit analyst and eventually became an executive vice president running several different business units, including small business, commercial banking and retirement.

Suzanne chose to go into banking because it offered many opportunities for learning about a variety of businesses. She has worked in the industry for 17 years and has been at National City for ten years. In her current role as Vice President, Business Banking, Suzanne works with small businesses to make sure they have the best structure and products for their company and individual needs. “I’ve found my niche,” she says of small business banking.

“I am constantly impressed and fascinated by the different small businesses that exist and the hard work, tenacity and creativity that I see in so many entrepreneurs.”

“Our clients like working with a husband and wife team who understand family dynamics,” says Karen. “After all, money is all about family. You want to be able to manage your financial life in response to what’s coming your way, whether it’s happy or sad, predictable or unpredictable.”

Her personal philosophy in life is to always follow your passion. “Working hard at something you love is easy,” she says.

“If you don’t love it, it’s agony.”

To that end, she encourages women to understand what’s important to them and what kind of life they wish to lead. “Then you ‘back into’ how to get there and set yourself up to be confident and successful,” she advises.

Karen serves on several boards, including the Cleveland Scholarship Program, Town Hall of Cleveland, Diocese of Cleveland Finance Council and Harvard Business School Club.

“It’s important to get involved in your community,” she says. “It really opens up your eyes and helps you understand the world beyond yourself.”

When she’s not tending to her new business venture or her family, Karen enjoys gardening, cooking and art.

Even as she embarks on this next chapter, Karen says her most rewarding professional accomplishment has been achieving all that she has professionally without sacrificing what was most important to her: having a large family. She and Jack have five children—Joe, Laura, Katy, Julia and Anne—who range in age from 25 to 15.

She reminds young girls that life doesn’t end at high school. “You never know the twists and turns life will take, so you have to let it play out and find your niche,” she says. “I really believe if you lead a good life, do the right things, and put a little thought into it, there’s quite a vista out there for young women.”

She finds a great sense of accomplishment in helping someone start their business, take the next step in expanding their business, or find a way to work through and survive a tough time in their business. “It makes me want to get up and go to work,” she says.

Suzanne recalls Ms. Eileen Teare and her Honors English and Journalism classes as an early influence. “Good writing lends credibility to how professional you come across,” she explains.

Suzanne has been married to her husband, Joe, for 16 years. They have three children: 9-year-old twin daughters, Sara and Maria, and 6-year-old Tommy. Her hobbies include reading, gardening, tennis and traveling with her family. “Our long-term plan is to cover all of the continental U.S. we’ve hit about eight states so far and also get to France,” she says. “We want our kids to think big, see what’s out there in the world, and understand how other people live.”

On the afternoon of May 30, 2008 the graduating class of 2008 gathered with their fellow students, faculty, staff, and alumnae at Our Lady of Angels church for the Farewell Mass and Alumnae Induction. In the midst of bidding farewell to the SJA community the seniors were warmly welcomed into the Alumnae Association by its president, Lou DeCrane Mack J’71. Jacqueline Jamison J’04 spoke of the importance of remaining faithful to the call of Saint Joseph and being true women of Saint Joseph Academy in the future. The Alumnae candle was lit, the medals presented, and as the class of 2008 bid farewell to their school family, they joined the community of Saint Joseph Academy Alumae.

In June, eight members of the Class of 1938 gathered together for a luncheon to celebrate the 70th anniversary of their graduation from Saint Joseph Academy. The women shared in fellowship and reminisced over many memories of their years at Saint Joseph Academy. Anne Marie Smith J’05 and Elizabeth Hilow J’06 were the youngest alumnae at the luncheon.

More than 200 alumnae and friends enjoyed a beautiful spring afternoon at the Cleveland Yachting Club on May 15. The new setting, at the mouth of the Rocky River, added to the usual lighthearted atmosphere of this popular event. The attendees enjoyed a delicious lunch, supported the raffle with wonderful prizes, were entertained by Cecilia’s Song and had plenty of time to re-connect with classmates and friends. More than $5000 was raised at this event which will be used to support scholarships for SJA students.

Beyonds Alumnae

1930s Catherine Pinkerton, CSJ J’39 recently received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the College of Our Lady of the Elms in Chicopee, MA. This honor recognized Sr. Catherine’s distinguished service and life achievements which serve as an inspiration to all.

Sr. Catherine also delivered the commencement address at the graduation ceremony.

1960s Mary Ann Bosansky Titus J’60, who is an accomplished fabric artist, recently had her beautiful quilts and other fabric creations on exhibit at River’s Edge. Mary Ann currently resides with her family in Westerville, OH. Mary Lou Vrnak Stricklin J’61 retired as President and CEO of the Visiting Nurse Association of Cleveland. As an active alumna of Saint Joseph Academy, Stricklin serves on the board of directors and recently co-chaired the successful campaign that raised more than $4 million for the 20

endowment fund. When asked what she plans to do in retirement, Stricklin said the she will continue to serve on community boards, teach Qigong classes, study art and enjoy time with her family.

Nancy Conway, CSJ J’65 recieved the John Carroll University Alumni Medal, the highest award bestowed by the John Carroll University Alumni Association.

Conway was awarded her medal for her contributions in helping to bring seven formerly independent congregations of Sisters of St. Joseph from seven states and Japan to form the new Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph. Conway currently serves as president.

1970s Karla Pokea Wean J’74, art teacher at Mulberry High School in Florida, was recently named a prestigious Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund Scholar. She traveled to Japan in June for a professional development opportunity designed to increase understanding between the Japanese and American people by inviting American teachers to visit Japan and share their experiences.

Karla has designed extensive curriculum and high-level thinking assignments incorporating Japanese culture, education, arts, and history.

Her June trip increased her knowledge and brought her more cross-cultural experience.

1980s Teri Gajewski Guggenbiller J’80 was married to Rick Guggenbiller in August of 2007. Her Matron of Honor was Lori Wells Yama J’82.

Teri is a landscaper for Connelly Landscaping in Avon, OH. She and her husband reside in Avon Lake.

Maureen Isabella Ashdown J’89 is a proud member of Team Fox, which is an affiliation of the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Disease research. She ran the Chicago Marathon in 2006 and the New York City Marathon in 2007 for Team Fox. Maureen, her husband, Todd, and their three children reside in Fairview Park, OH.

1990s Colleen Manning Kim J’95 and her husband, Don, are co-leaders of a Webelo Cub Scout Den of Pack 249 in Michigan.

Colleen and Don recently earned the National Den Award for a quality program in the den and the Cub Scout Den Leader Award for Excellence.

Mary Therese Knittel Cory J’97 was married to Michael J. Cory on May 24, 2008. Among her attendants were her classmate (K-12), Suzanne Plummer Rosol J’97, and her cousin, Madeline Lanning J’12. Mary taught at SJA for three years. She is currently a high school counselor in Las Vegas and will begin a two-year principal program at UNLV this fall.

Anne Hanzel Stalvey J’98 currently resides in Myrtle Beach, SC with her husband, Justin, and her stepson. Anne is a partner with her mother in running a tourism website and is an assistant manager for Goodwill Industries.

Kati Filigenzi J’99 married Brian Witt on June 14, 2008 Angie Follen J’99 married Mat Gerovac on June 28, 2008. Liz Conway J’99 and Molly-Lieb J’99 were bridesmaids.

2000s Amy Schilling Caskie J’01 was married to Jared Caskie in December of 2007. The two met when they attended and graduated from the University of Dayton. Amy and Jared currently reside in Powell, OH.

Jackie Kurtz J’03 recently graduated from Cleveland State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.

Amanda Mosley Crowder J’03 was married to Jared Crowder in May of 2006. Her bridesmaids were Jackie Kurtz J’03, Laura Jakupca J’03, and Laura Simna J’03.

Ann Perry J’03 recently graduated from the University of Akron with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design and a minor in Marketing.

Anne Bernat J’04 recently graduated cum laude from the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. She was inducted into Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society. Anne is currently pursuing post graduate service with the Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE). ACE is a two-year program based out of Notre Dame that trains teachers to serve in under-resourced Catholic schools. She will be teaching high school juniors and seniors in chemistry, physics, and environmental science at Saint John Interparochial School in Plaquemine, LA. Erin Kilkenny Crisan J’04 was married to Brian Crisan in April of this year. They reside in Akron, where Erin works for the AkronSummit County Public Library, at the Green Branch location.

Beth Richer J’04 recently graduated from Xavier University with a Bachelor of Arts in Theology and a Bachelor of Science in Political Science. Beth interned at SJA this summer and greatly contributed to construction of the website. She is on her way to Seattle, WA to participate in the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. While in Seattle, Beth will be working for Equal Rights Washington, focusing on political lobbying and political/clergy relations.

She has also been accepted to law school.

2008 Nazareth Academy Reunion This year’s Nazareth Academy Reunion will take place on Sunday, September 7, 2008 at Carrie Cerino’s Ristorante in North Royalton. Special recognition will be given to attendees from reunion classes. Invitations will be sent out to Nazareth alums in the local area by the end of July. “Miracle on 34th Street” at Huntington Playhouse The Alumnae Office has reserved the entire Playhouse for the December 11, 2008 evening performance of “Miracle on 34th Street” at Huntington Playhouse in Bay Village. 2008 Saint Therese Luncheon The annual Saint Therese Academy Reunion Luncheon will be held on October 1, 2008 at River’s Edge at the CSJ motherhouse.

The luncheon will be followed by Mass in the Worship Space.
