e certainly lifted our hearts and voices in praise and thanksgiving on March 19th, the Feast of St. Joseph. Blessed with a brilliant spring morning, ground was broken for our much-needed major renovation project to expand the cafeteria and kitchen and upgrade the 84-year old infrastructure, including electricity and heating.

There is much more information about the groundbreaking ceremony and Mass, and the Expanding Minds. Building Futures. Raising Leaders. capital campaign on pages 4-7. To be honest, our campaign isn’t flashy, but it is so necessary. Any of you who have remodeled an old house know how costly the basics can be. Our goal is to provide our young women with a 21st century global education in an environment that properly supports them.

For me, the best part of this historic day was seeing the joy on the faces of the Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph. So many of these women had taught, and even lived, in our beloved Academy building. Their lifelong witness of “serving the dear neighbor” is a gift to each of us. They have taught us in the classrooms of SJA, at Nazareth and St. Therese Academies, and at Catholic elementary schools throughout the diocese of Cleveland. They have responded to the needs of our time, reaching out to the newborn and the aged, the homeless and the hungry, even the unlovable. They have served in nursing homes, in parishes, and also have served on Capitol Hill, in Africa and around the world. The Saint Joseph Academy of today would not be possible without the prayerful, educational, financial, courageous and visionary support of this Congregation. It is their leadership and guidance that keeps SJA vibrant at a time when the world most needs the gifts and talents of the young women who will graduate from the Academy.

Education in an environment filled with faith is a powerful thing. It is surely the charism of the Congregation of St. Joseph that has the most profound influence on the education provided at SJA. There is a focus these days on the “outcomes” of education. Educators are being asked how they measure success; how they know they have provided a quality education. The five women honored this year as Distinguished Alumnae are perhaps the best evidence of that success. Each of these women lead a life of “compassionate leadership and service in a global society,” truly fulfilling the mission of an SJA education. I can think of no finer proof that this school makes a difference in our communities, our country, our Church and our world than these five alumnae. Please read their stories on pages 18 and 19 and be inspired! We are so proud to call them our own!

Now it is your turn to follow the example of our visionary Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph and respond to the needs of our time. There comes a moment when each of us has the chance to really make a difference. Now is the time when you can help shape the destiny of this school by supporting our critical capital campaign and making a lasting imprint upon Saint Joseph Academy. When you are asked, I hope you will join me and support our efforts!

Technological Opportunities Enable Teachers to Expand Students’ Horizons

A

Students creating short films with digital cameras and the I-Movie program. World Languages students using the program Audacity to fine-tune their pronunciation of Spanish words and phrases. These are just a couple of examples of how the use of 21st century technology is becoming commonplace in SJA classes.

The use of technology is easier this year thanks to a generous donation of 60 wireless access points from John Carroll University that helped blanket our building with connectivity, shared Ryan MacRaild, Instructional Technology Education Coordinator. But just as importantly, there is a conscious effort among our educators to take advantage of the electronic learning aids available to teachers and students.

“Our faculty is working on technology integration strategies including paperless classrooms, blended learning environments and technology integration strategies for Mathematics and English classes,” he explained.

Technology also is being integrated into longtime traditions. For example, during Catholic Schools Week, the Theology department collaborated with the Technology Department to create video interviews of several Sisters of the

Congregation of St. Joseph to help connect “across the circle.”

“Digital learning and teaching are becoming more and more the norm in the secondary classroom as well as the collegiate levels. The capabilities of organizing, collaboration and creativity offered by technology are endless. Offering coursework in an on-line environment is the first step in preparing our students for college coursework they may experience on-line,” shared Mr. MacRaild.

Through a Diocese-supported program called Schoology, our students and teachers can interact in a secure, on-line learning environment with activities such as discussion boards, blogging, digital assessments and communication tools. This, combined with our own secure e-mail through Google Apps for Education, gives two very powerful

tools to our students and teachers.

“It is incredibly valuable to be able to connect with each other outside of the school day,” shared Principal Blake J. Prewitt, Ed.S. “Technology is an invaluable asset to our learning community. It is great to see such innovative educators growing and changing with the times. By exposing our students to these types of learning situations -- while showing them the proper way to use the technology – we provide them with a cutting-edge advantage.”

Students are embracing the new educational technologies. “Using Skype in English class was so helpful. It was exciting being able to talk with someone halfway around the world,” said Allie Hippler ’15.

“What a great way to see a recreated theatre in which Shakespeare’s plays could have been performed!”

Ground Broken for $7.8 Million Expansion and Infrastructure Improvements

O

n a sunny March 19th, the Feast of St. Joseph, more than 150 distinguished guests – including Sisters from the Congregation of St. Joseph, alumnae, school officials, Board Members, government representatives and friends of the Academy – celebrated the groundbreaking for the Academy’s new cafeteria and multipurpose space and outdoor learning area.

Faculty and staff ensured that this was a memorable occasion for the Congregation, guests and students. The Academic

Leadership Team and Josie the Jaguar, dressed in construction gear, greeted the girls as they arrived. Before classes, students assembled wearing their commemorative T-shirts in the Academy Center for an allschool photo to mark the occasion.

Anne Marie Carey Pecon ’71, Chair of the Board of Directors welcomed the crowd, and Pat Kozak, CSJ ’64, delivered the invocation. Senior Abbey Vogel charmed the audience as the Master of Ceremonies, and members of the Congregation Leadership Team, Nancy Conway, CSJ ’65 and Jeanne

Cmolik, CSJ N’65, blessed the grounds and the project. Paul Clark, Regional Vice President of PNC Bank and Campaign Cochair, shared his enthusiasm for these critical projects, and Maureen Russell Harper ’90, Chief Communications Officer for the City of Cleveland delivered a proclamation from Mayor Frank Jackson. Also participating in the excitement were the student leadership teams from each class, the academic department chairs and students participating in the Construction Academy.

Students from the Class Leadership teams presented each Sister with a small tree to represent SJA’s plans to plant a tree to honor the Congregation, which has provided unwavering and enthusiastic support to

both the capital campaign, as well as the Academy at large.

“We are thrilled to give our students this incredible gift,” said President Mary Ann Corrigan-Davis ’71. “We are forever grateful for the generous support of the Congregation of St. Joseph, our alumnae, the Board of Directors and friends of the Academy who have made this day possible.”

I

n 1890, when the Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph opened a school on Starkweather Avenue near downtown Cleveland, they were filling a need to prepare young women living on Cleveland’s west side for the academic rigors of the approaching 20th century. The goal of the school named Saint Joseph Academy was to provide a quality education to young women in the city, while maintaining deeply rooted Catholic traditions and values.

Within eight years, as the school thrived, the visionary Mother Theresa Fitzmaurice, CSJ bought 54 acres of farm land in the sparsely populated (and considered wild!) area called Rockport Township. After several years of conducting classes in the Motherhouse, groundbreaking for the “new” Saint Joseph Academy building in 1928 ensured a continuation of the tradition of education and dedication to God and service.

For 84 years, the grand building has served our young women well, sheltering

students as their learning transitioned from secretarial skills and cooking, to the 21st century world of pre-engineering, graphic design and microbiology. The reality is, however, that all of the utility systems in the building are original and need to be updated, including electrical, heating and fire-suppression systems, to provide a clean and safe environment and allow students to concentrate on learning.

This year, a huge step was taken to upgrade and improve the safety and enhance the learning environment here at the Academy. On March 19, school officials broke ground to transform and double the size of the original cafeteria into a state-of-the-art multi-purpose space and lay the ground work for upgrading the infrastructure.

The new, airy and spacious room – with a wall of windows overlooking the land that first caught Mother Theresa’s attention – will allow students to eat lunch, collaborate on projects,

and access a range of multi-media technologies in both large and small group settings. The outdoor areas will be used for both formal and informal programs. Construction of the multi-purpose space, which includes a rooftop learning space, will be completed by the start of the 2012-13 school year.

The $4 million needed for the first-half of the project is already in-hand, thanks to the generosity, support and hard work of the Congregation of St. Joseph, the SJA community of families, alumnae and supporters.

“We are humbled and grateful for the leadership and hard work of Capital Campaign Co-chairs Linda M. Kane ’75 and Paul G. Clark, the rest of the Capital Campaign Steering Committee and the Saint Joseph Academy Board of Directors.

Without them, and the support of the Congregation of St. Joseph, we would not be breaking ground for our new multipurpose space and moving forward in our effort to provide the very best environment for our students,” stated school President Mary Ann Corrigan-Davis, ’71.

Fundraising for this first, critical phase of renovating and improving the Academy was done quietly. But the needs remain great.

We are redoubling our efforts to continue the good work by raising funds to improve the infrastructure and make renovations necessary so the girls entrusted to our care can learn in a safe and nurturing environment.

Another $3.8 million is needed to upgrade and add new technologies to ensure students are prepared with cutting-edge, 21st century skills. Also, much help is still needed to replace heating and electrical systems throughout all four floors. These are not flashy improvements, but as anyone who lives in an older home knows, they are vital!

Encapsulating the heart of our Capital Campaign, we are calling it the initiative for Expanding Minds, Building Futures, Raising Leaders. We are currently enjoying an unprecedented period of financial stability and capacity enrollment. The Capital Campaign’s goals will preserve these achievements. The money raised will fortify our facilities and ensure the long-term sustainability of our tradition of providing an environment where young women can achieve academic excellence, foster love and unity with God and one another, and prepare for compassionate leadership and service in a global society.

Help us celebrate our success by assisting us in completing the dream! Volunteers are being recruited to help us spread our message about the critical need to ensure our success for the young women of the city of Cleveland. Letter from the Principal

Academy Dreams Lead to Successful, Faith-based Lives It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.

T

here was an article in the Harvard Magazine titled “Twilight of the Lecture.” When we discussed this at a meeting, faculty members were surprised it took Harvard so long to realize what we have known for a long time: Students want to be active participants in their education, not passive receptacles of information.

Good teachers know that education equals joy in learning. With that said, it’s obvious that SJA has excellent teachers because even casual observations show that on a daily basis, our students are actively participating – and finding joy! – in their education.

The global learning isn’t just in the classroom. Students also have opportunities during their careers at SJA to travel to Spain, France, Rome and China. There are days I feel I am in an international school

as I am greeted with pleasantries spoken in Spanish, French, Latin and Chinese. I could write pages about the wonderful learning happening here

every day!

I would be remiss if I didn’t highlight our Advanced Placement offerings for next school year. Ninety-eight percent of our seniors attend college, so they should have many as many options as possible to attend college-level classes during their senior year.

Advanced Placement is a national curriculum that mirrors a college-level class. The program

allows students to receive college credit if they pass the AP test. Next year, we are adding AP Psychology, AP French and AP Chinese.

In all, we are offering 14 different Advanced Placement classes. We will have an AP class for every type of student.

As I’ve said in the past, I am always amazed at the educational, charism and social activities happening at the Academy every week. We are blessed to have professionals visiting, sharing their knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm. Their advice – plus the wonderful classroom experiences – allows students to push themselves every day and follow their dreams beyond the Academy halls.

Earlier this year, more than a dozen students enjoyed an informative and interesting field trip to the Cleveland Clinic’s Surgical Teleconference Center. The visit included a tour of the hospital, the surgical simulation lab, the rehabilitation facilities, the cadaver testing lab and the surgical video theater. Students sat in a “Disneylike auditorium” and watched live feeds of multiple in-process surgeries on five different TV screens!

Students also had the opportunity to learn about health careers such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, orthotics, speech therapy and prosthetics.

“The focus of the day was that there are hundreds of different jobs in the hospital that need people of different skills and interests, not just doctors and nurses,” stated Dr. Frederick S. Frost, executive director of the Cleveland Clinic Rehabilitation and Sports Therapy department.

“This was an awesome experience,” shared Melissa Brodsky ’12, who is planning on attending the University of Toledo and major in Bioengineering with a pre-med focus.

Classes, Speakers, Field Trips All Focus on Growing Interest in Engineering Careers

T

he Academy is already known for its high academics, growing Honors and AP curricula and charism partnership with the Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph. In recent years, however, the school has been making its mark in a different area: preparing students for the exciting of careers in engineering.

The engineering classes are growing in popularity. An “Introduction to Engineering” and “Honors Pre-Engineering” both examining the concepts, skills and logic needed for a successful engineering career.

An emphasis is placed on teamwork, creative problem solving and hands-on project opportunities. These experiences will benefit the student who is considering a career in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields. Students in these classes are self-motivated and learn about different engineering fields, drafting principles and 3-D modeling using a CAD program.

As a supplement to these important classes, math and science teachers such as

John Lesko, David Weiss and Paula Schuetz frequently host speakers currently involved in engineering jobs, or teaching engineering classes at the college level.

Recently, one of the visitors was the charismatic speaker Geoffrey Orsak, Dean of the Engineering School at Southern Methodist University. He addressed both parents and students in a special career session in February.

Dr. Orsak created The Infinity Program, a summer program for high school teachers that helps facilitate and promote the teaching of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) classes in high schools.

“Practice having great ideas all the time,” urged Dr. Orsak. In one form or another, engineers have been behind all the major innovations of the last 100 years, he added.

In fact, it’s basically thanks to engineers that the average life expectancy has advanced from 45 years old in 1900 to the current 77.6 years old. “All these changes are due to engineering!” he shared.

At that same session was Gregg Lowe, Senior Vice President of Texas Instruments and Saint Edward High School alumnus.

He has been an avid supporter of our preengineering program.

“My advice is to start general and then go to the specifics after you get a degree,” shared John Agostinelli, another recent speaker. He travels to high schools on behalf of the University of Toledo to talk about engineering careers. In December, he spoke to students in Paula Scheutz’ Pre-Calculus class. “You would not believe the doors that will open,” he shared.

Students also travel away from the classrooms to learn about engineering career possibilities. Students from Mr. Lesko’s PreEngineering class and Mr. Weiss’ Honors Chemistry class enjoyed a special visit to the Fenn College of Engineering at Cleveland State University (CSU). The three-hour visit began with a presentation defining engineering careers by Gregg Schoof, Manager of Engineering Student Programs.

Students then had the opportunity to tour a chemical and biomedical engineering lab hosted by Dr. Joanne Savinell Belovich ’81, a professor at CSU. Dr. Belovich was able to use her Academy education as a springboard to an engineering career. In addition to career advice, students viewed research currently being done on algae and biofuels, and participate in a driving simulator in the Civil Engineering’s Transportation Center.

The activity-packed visit concluded with a campus tour and an opportunity for some to take their first ride on a Segway!

Engineering may just be one of the most interesting career possibilities in the 21st century. Our students will certainly have a better perspective than most other teenagers about its potential.

Professional Shadowing Program Allows to Experience “Real Life” Careers

I

n early March, juniors spent three days away from their classrooms to gain “real life” experience in potential careers. Students stood side-by-side with professionals in hospitals, court rooms, businesses and schools throughout the greater Cleveland area and beyond.

The Junior Professional Shadowing Program, organized by College Counselors Susan Jensen and Maria Mueller, enables juniors to spend time working with a sponsor in a career of their choice.

professions observed. The juniors were responsible for making all arrangements related to their project, and were encouraged to reach outside their comfort zones and find unique and meaningful adventures while earning an exceptional perspective on life after high school and college.

“I was able to spend three days with Dr. Jennifer Snyder, who specializes in very young patients, mostly babies; Dr. Curtis 10

Dornan, whose patients are young adults and some children; and Dr. Charles Garven, who sees older patients. I loved watching all three doctors interact with their patients!

All of them had different approaches and different styles. It was very eye-opening.

I discovered as I observed Dr. Snyder conducting a ‘well-baby’ check-up on a sixday-old baby that I love pediatrics. That is now a specialty I will seriously consider. The three days I spent shadowing these doctors was amazing from the first day to the last day. Now I am really considering medicine as a potential career.”

Kate Hutchinson spent three days in New York City on the CBS Studios production stage of the TV show “The Good Wife.” Kate spent most of her time with a production assistant in charge of the scenes, making sure they remained visually the same between scenes, and repairing them if they were damaged by being moved for special camera angles or other scenes.

“I spent all my time with Kaem Coughlin. She is called a ‘camera scenic’ and I cannot believe how long and sometimes difficult her work schedule can be. She usually has to be on the set of ‘The Good Wife’ by 7 a.m. and some nights, she isn’t home until after 10 p.m. They say there’s a lot of ‘hurry up and wait’ and in show business, and they weren’t wrong. That is how it is! I spent a lot of time watching the monitors because it was hard to see the actors behind all the cameras and people working behind the scenes. I am extremely interested in finding a career in TV, film or the theater. I was initially thinking about acting, but now I’ve opened to directing, working the camera or even writing. Shadowing was such an incredible experience!”

Anne Webster knew of all the good works done by the volunteers and staff of Ronald McDonald House, but her shadowing experience made her realize that there are many people behind-the-scenes at nonprofits that keep the organizations running smoothly.

“I am interested in marketing and public relations, so I was very lucky that

Students stays. I spent part of the time helping them work on their ‘My Three Words’ campaign in which people come up with three words to describe their experience at Ronald McDonald House. My favorite was ‘Faith, Hope, Love.’ Shadowing has helped me in my decision to attend Xavier University and major in Communications Studies.”

Claire Sanfilippo learned about international issues first-hand during her shadowing experience at the Cleveland Council on World Affairs, located in downtown Cleveland.

“The mission of the CCWA is to increase local awareness about international affairs. One of the most exciting moments during my three days there was meeting the former U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan, Mr. Charles Dunbar. My dream is to work in an embassy, so meeting him was incredible. I was able to hear first-hand what it was like to work in the Middle East, a true hotbed of strife and politics. I also learned that the Council offers foreign exchange programs for teenagers interested in world issues. I hope to be able to work an internship there next summer to further my education about global concerns.”

President and CEO of Federal Reserve Bank Shares Knowledge, Leadership Secrets at Fifth Annual Women’s Leadership Symposium

S

andra Pianalto, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Reserve Bank, was the keynote speaker at this year's annual Women’s Leadership Symposium. The event, which drew women leaders from all over Northeast Ohio, was held in late November.

The Women’s Leadership Symposium was initiated five years ago by President Mary Ann Corrigan-Davis ’71. It is designed to expose students to current world issues, as well as introduce them to the many different careers options open to women. This year’s theme of financial responsibility was addressed by both Ms. Pianalto and by a panel of experts.

“We were extremely honored to have Ms. Sandra Pianalto visit and speak with our students about the responsibilities of Leadership,” shared Corrigan-Davis. “We have a duty to our students to provide a high-quality education embracing 21st century skills, and to prepare them to be successful and conscientious adults.”

In addition to Ms. Pianalto’s keynote address, nearly 50 professional women talked to students in “Career Breakout Sessions.” They represented careers as varied as doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, accountants, attorneys, entrepreneurs, educators, engineers, judges, bankers, scientists, law enforcement officers, marketing experts and professional artists.

The panel discussion was titled “Financial Responsibility in Today’s World.” Panelists were Lisa Oliver, president, Greater Cleveland District, Key Bank; Rosemary McAdams McEntee ’73, vice president, Huntington Bank; and Suzanne Huber Ferrara ’87, market manager, Treasury Management Services, PNC Bank.

the day’s activities. As president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, Ms. Pianalto participates in the formulation of U.S. monetary policy.

She oversees 1,200 employees in Cleveland, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh who conduct economic research, supervise financial institutions, and provide payment services to commercial banks and the U.S. government.

“Everyone matters and everyone deserves respect. We moved to America from Italy when I was 5 years old. Seeing how others treated my parents who spoke very little English upset me at times, but taught me how to become a compassionate person. It brought home the importance of giving back in gratitude for all my gifts.

My parents taught me from a very young age that academic excellence and hard work were the paths to success. That has not changed. If anything, they are even more important in this age of instant global communication,” shared Ms. Pianalto.

“My goal now that I am at this stage of my life is to make sure I do not forget the importance of service to others.”

Serving the Dear Neighbor Sister Helen Prejean Inspires Students

H

elen Prejean CSJ, well-known activist, dynamic speaker and author of “Dead Man Walking,” talked about her life’s passions – social justice, eliminating the death penalty and all-inclusive compassion – in a moving assembly attended by students and staff in early March. She also spoke earlier in November to Cleveland area students at The City Club of Cleveland. Sr. Helen, who graduated from SJA’s sister school St. Joseph’s Academy in Baton Rouge, shared how her life’s work has evolved and grown through her willingness to be open to uncomfortable situations and to always share God’s compassion.

“My ministry was and is a spiritual

journey,” she shared. “We are called to love all, from the unborn to the unlovable. No one just starts out and says, ‘I’m going to be the Sister involved with ‘Dead Man Walking.’

The journey to compassion and social justice starts with the simple question ‘What can I do to make the world a better place?’ You have to figure out what you can do to make sure human rights are honored and that fairness and justice are not forgotten.”

Her words, especially when talking about the heartbreaking crimes committed by the inmates she counsels, were emotional and impactful. The concepts of compassion and love for all became real for the audience at both venues, some of whom were moved to tears.

Freshmen and Sophomore Mentoring Group members got into the Christmas spirit of giving by creating colorful fleece blankets and scarves for residents of Laura’s Home and the West Side Catholic Center. Laura’s Home serves women and children who are in-crisis in the Cleveland area by providing safety, food and shelter to provide hope for their future. The Freshmen Mentoring group made warm, Jaguar paw-decorated fleece blankets.

The Sophomore Mentoring Group made purple and gold scarves, also made of warm fleece. In addition to the blankets, students collected age-appropriate toys and games for Santa to deliver to Laura’s Home children. Faculty and staff collected games to be donated with the scarves to the West Side Catholic Center.

Senior Receives President’s Volunteer Service Award Senior Victoria Korce has been awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country.

at the church’s Rainbow Camp for special needs children. In addition, she volunteers every year at the North Olmsted branch of the Knights of Columbus annual Christmas party, wrapping and distributing toys to hundreds of children.

Victoria received a President’s Volunteer Service Award certificate and a letter from President Obama.

Victoria is the daughter of Debbie Wolfe Korce ’76.

Christmas break proved to be very exciting for senior Caroline Pallotta and junior Lauren Brooks! Both students were featured on the front page of The Plain Dealer on Thursday, December 22, as part of the newspaper’s annual “Heroes 2011” series.

Caroline and Lauren were honored for their work with the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center’s Youth 360 program, as well as for starting SAVE (Sexual Assault and Violence Education) Club at SJA.

airos XXI and Kairos XXII were each held in recent months at St. Leonard Youth Retreat Center in Avon. Kairos means “God’s time” and it is the Academy’s goal to provide each student with reflection and introspection time each year of their educational career.

During the three-day, two-night Kairos XXI retreat, 47 juniors, and a team of eight seniors and eight teachers reflected on their relationships with God and others. The theme song of “Let Us Love” reminded the retreatants to “Wake up and let us love like we are children.”

“This retreat was a great opportunity for us to come together as a class and experience God’s love,” shared Mikayla Liston ’13.

Kairos XXII, also a three-day, two-night retreat, involved a group of nearly 50 juniors and a team of eight seniors and eight teachers.

They reflected on giving themselves to God. “Kairos gave me the opportunity to strengthen my relationship with Christ by taking me away from my busy life so I could be reminded of how great His love is for me,” shared Caroline Goodill ’13. “I made many new friends during small group discussions, and I discovered that they share many of the same struggles and joys in their faith as I do.”

Kairos retreats were started by the Class of 2003, and this year more than 80 percent of the juniors have chosen this retreat opportunity.

In addition to the newspaper article, Caroline and Lauren were honored in February with a Peer Leadership Award by the Domestic Violence & Child Advocacy Center for their work with the Youth 360 program.

“Both girls are tremendous leaders and respected by all of their peers at school.

They both stand up for what is right,” stated President Mary Ann Corrigan-Davis ’71.

Prayer and Presence Partners Share Spirit, Love of God Students and the Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph have always shared a special bond. They have always been sisters in a spiritual sense, from the time the CSJs founded Saint Joseph Academy and then, within a few years, braved the sparsely populated woodlands of West Park to build the school into the spiritual and educational hallmark it is today.

The school’s Prayer and Presence program continues the tradition by pairing each grade at the Academy with two CSJ Sisters who pray for them and share the spirit of charism throughout the year in various ways.

So far this school year, groups of students

have twice met in the Nazareth Library with Sisters for spiritual support, companionship, conversation and good food.

“It is such a blessing to spend time with the sisters. We are so lucky to be able to sit and talk with them, and share our lives,” said Emily Ernst ’13.

Students Win 17 Awards in the Scholastic Art & Writing Competition

welve students won an amazing 17 awards – two Gold Keys, four Silver Keys and 11 Honorable Mentions – at the Scholastic Art & Writing Competition held in January at the Cleveland Institute of Art. The competition recognizes creative achievement of Cuyahoga County students in grades 7-12. Only Portfolio and Gold Key winners continue to the national competition in New York City.

Natalie Bittel ’13 and Elizabeth Wise ’12 each earned a Gold Key, the highest Scholastic Art award. Natalie’s winning artwork was in the printmaking category and was titled “What Lies Underneath.”

artwork (she also earned an honorable mention with another piece) was called “Señora.” Both Natalie and Elizabeth will compete with their winning artwork on the national level in New York City in June 2012.

All the art from the competition was exhibited at the Cleveland Institute of Art Reinberger Galleries.

Students in AP Studio Art and Art Three: Portfolio Preparation and Printmaking and Enameling classes had the opportunity to visit the non-profit Morgan Art of Papermaking Conservatory and Educational Foundation in downtown Cleveland.

Students, accompanied by Visual and Performing Arts chair Shelly Ahern, learned basic paper chemistry by creating handmade paper using Western and Eastern sheetforming techniques.

One of the most popular demonstrations involved students learning how to make paper from the kozo plant using an Eastern papermaking practice that produces

Students Shine at Ohio Music Education Association Competition Vocal and Instrumental music students were stars in late January at the Ohio Music Education Association High School Solo and Ensemble Competition. Held at the Parma campus of Cuyahoga Community College, the competition involved 34 schools and 850 performers.

Fourteen students received a “superior” rating and twelve students were honored with a coveted “outstanding” rating. They were accompanied to the competition, which involved performing in front of approximately 2,000 guests, by music teachers Christine Fondaw and David Mumford.

“The OMEA contest is so prestigious and there were so many very talented students participating,” shared sophomore Karianne Stanton, a Cecilia’s Song member who received an “outstanding” rating for a vocal solo.

beautifully thin, transparent long-fibered paper. The handmade paper produced was used for two different academic projects.

One project was titled “The Printed Periodic Table” and involved using their paper to print images that represent the individual assigned elements of the periodic table – making a connection between the process of art and science. The second project was “Serve the Dear Neighbor: Sending Joy at Christmas.”

Students created one-of-kind Christmas cards for a service project for soldiers overseas.

“Godspell” Production Was Huge Hit!

A modern staging of the classic “Godspell” was performed at the school two weekends in November, with students wowing the standing-room-only crowd! The musical is based on the Gospel of Matthew and is told in a series of parables. Students performed such hit songs as “Day by Day” and “Prepare Ye (The Way of the Lord).”

Sports WINTER

Basketball – What an enjoyable and satisfying season for Varsity basketball! Varsity powered through multiple injuries and a “meat grinder” schedule, making its 13-10 overall record deceiving in that it doesn’t reflect the grit and hard-work of the team as it faced adversity. Last season’s Co-MVP’s Daija Jones ’13 and Greta Burry ’14 both missed significant playing time Rachel Schwind ’12 due to injuries. The Jaguars worked their way up to a 13th ranking, the highest in SJA history. The Jaguars’ most memorable win was against top-ranked Gilmour Academy.

The team was carried by the leadership and tenacity of the team’s four senior captains: Emma Tilow, Celine Mangan, Rachel Schwind, and Hannah Lowe. These four players showed perseverance, resolve, love of the game and “refusal to quit.” They were extraordinary examples for their fellow returning teammates Emma Tilow ’12 and underclassmen in the program.

highlight of the season was beating cross-town rival Lakewood High School for the first time in school history in a nail-biting dual meet. The Jaguars won 98-88. Swimming a tough schedule, the Jaguars defeated Beaumont, Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy and Bedford High School in dual meets. They also finished 2nd of 5 teams at the Gilmour Invitational; 3rd of 10 teams at the Hathaway Brown Blazer Invitational; and 4th of 7 teams at the North Olmsted Eagle Open. A season standout was Emma Ryan ’12 with a total of 19 individual wins throughout the season. Ryan broke a total of four of her own school records throughout the dual-meet season, including the 100m free, 200m individual medley, 100m butterfly and 100m backstroke. Diver Kaleigh Macalla ’13 also contributed with four first-place finishes throughout the dual meet season.

Capping off a great season at the Division 1 Northeast Ohio Sectional, the Jaguars finished 7th of 19 teams. This was their highest finish in the history of Saint Joseph Academy Swimming and Diving. The majority of the team swam personal best times and many Jaguars scored in the top 16 places. Three swimmers qualified to the District Meet at Cleveland State University, the Caitlyn Cingle ’12 most in school history: Emma Ryan ’12, Sarah Sofish ’14 and Maddie Zimmerman ’14.

Government Officials Discuss Public Service, Politics with Students

P

olitical Action Club members have been active this year, attracting interesting speakers and arranging fascinating field trips exploring the political process – an important topic in this, an election year.

In February, one of the area’s top politicians visited the school. Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald addressed students about how he became involved in politics and -- briefly -- on the scandals that have rocked Cuyahoga County government since the FBI raid in 2008.

“I am the product of both Catholic and public schools,” shared Mr. FitzGerald. He noted that he made a list when he was about 15 years old of the 100 things he hoped to accomplish in life. That list included becoming a lawyer, a Cuyahoga County prosecutor, an FBI agent, and a public servant. He accomplished all those goals.

When he left the FBI, “I came back to the Cleveland area to make government work for people in a way that was honest and had integrity,” he stated. Before the county executive position, Mr. FitzGerald was first a councilman and then mayor of Lakewood.

Despite the scandals plaguing county government, Mr. FitzGerald urged students to pursue a career in politics if that’s their passion. “Ethical people with the right values and the right motivation need to become involved,” he shared.

Earlier in the winter, Political Action Club and Honors U.S. Government students visited Cleveland City Hall. “The goal of the trip was to provide students with an in-depth look at how local government operates on a daily basis and some of the many challenges lawmakers are currently facing,” shared Social Studies teacher Michael Shannon, who accompanied the students on the field trip.

The students also met Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson, who spent time talking with all of the girls in a question-and-answer session.

Students Participate in the Washington, D.C., March for Life Rally

I

n late January, 44 students and four faculty members joined the tens of thousands of dedicated pro-life advocates at the March for Life rally in Washington, D.C. The annual march and rally protest the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion. The theme of this year’s walk was “Unite on the life principles to overturn Roe v. Wade and with love protect mothers and preborn children – no exception, no compromise.”

“The March for Life was an enriching opportunity to help us strengthen our faith and be strong in our beliefs.

We all benefitted from this experience that helped us be close to god and other, while standing together for a good cause,” shared Emily Ginty ’12.

President Mary Ann Corrigan-Davis Named to 2011 Irish Education 100 The Irish Voice newspaper named President Mary Ann CorriganDavis ’71 to its prestigious Irish Education 100 list for 2011. The annual list was started in 2009 and honors leading figures in education across America. Mrs. Corrigan-Davis was featured in a special edition of the Irish Voice on December 14, coinciding with an awards ceremony held in New York City. Her maternal grandfather and paternal great grandparents were all born in County Mayo, Ireland.

To know Dr. Debbie Ghazoul-Mills is to witness a person clearly doing her life’s work. Her nominators describe her as epitomizing “the values of integrity, character, faith and stewardship of her God-given talents as a physician.”

“Dr. Debbie,” as she is fondly known, has been in private practice as a pediatrician for 22 years in Westlake and currently serves as Medical Director and Section Head of the Cleveland Clinic Westlake Pediatric group.

Her degrees include a Bachelor of Science from John Carroll University, an M.D. from the Medical College of Ohio, and a Pediatric Residency Training degree from Case Western Reserve University/Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.

In keeping with the mission of the Congregation of St. Joseph to “Serve the Dear Neighbor,” Debbie routinely demonstrates passion, humility and a genuine goodness in caring for patients and their families.

Debbie resides in Avon Lake with her husband of 20 years, John C. Mills, and their two daughters, current students carrying on the SJA legacy, Alexandra ’13 and Caroline ’14.

The line of SJA graduates is long in Dr. Debbie’s family. It includes: sisters Cathy Ghazoul Nemeh ’74 and Judy Ghazoul Hilow ’81, and nieces Fadia Nemeh ’02, Ashley Nemeh ’06, Deborah Nemeh ’08, Elizabeth Hilow ’06 and Eleanore Hilow ’08.

After graduating from Villanova University in 1986 with a Bachelor’s in Nursing, Colleen Gallagher Thomas was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy. Over the course of 25 years of active duty, has advanced to the rank of Captain.

She also earned two advanced degrees—a Master’s in Public Health and a Master’s of Science in Nursing, CFNP (Certified Family Nurse Practitioner).

Colleen works at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, where she leads professional development and clinical excellence for nursing, while continuing clinical hours at the U.S. Naval Academy.

In 2011, she was assigned to the newly created position of Senior Navy Liaison to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the government entity that provides U.S. economic, development and humanitarian assistance worldwide. Her role is to enhance collaboration between the Navy and USAID. Colleen credits her alma mater with sealing the faith foundation established by her parents, parish and elementary school. “I’m extremely humbled and honored to be associated with such esteemed alumnae. It inspires me to accomplish more.”

Her SJA connections include nieces Kelly Gallagher ’09 and Mary Catherine Krupla ’04.

That quote from Cathy Witt’s favorite hymn is a guiding philosophy in her life. Her quiet humility, prayerfulness and generous heart are instrumental in helping her accomplish whatever needs to be done – at work, for her family, within her parish

community, or wherever her presence is needed.

Cathy, a past member of the SJA Board of Directors, has worked for 32 years at University Hospitals as a social worker, starting in OBGYN and moving to Oncology in 1988. It’s a career choice that has directly shaped her outlook on life. Dealing with the dying on a daily basis reminds her that life is indeed precious. As a result, she does not sweat the small stuff.

Cathy lives her calling as a true disciple of Christ through her actions and words to all whom she comes in contact. In addition to her devotion to her job, she is very active in her parish, St. Basil the

Pat Kozak, CSJ has been the Congregation of St. Joseph’s liaison to the Board of Directors of Saint Joseph Academy for 14 years.

She embodies the Congregation’s commitment to the school and, conversely, the importance of the school to the CSJs.

Although she’s worked in academia, the corporate world, and the nonprofit sector, there’s one undisputed constant – Natalie LeekNelson makes things happen.

She’s been President and CEO of Providence House, a crisis nursery founded by Hope Greener, CSJ, and the Congregation of St. Joseph, for the last decade. It’s grown exponentially under her direction.

Natalie credits Saint Joseph Academy for instilling the lessons that influence her leadership approach. That service, social justice and faith are at the core of our humanity. That everyone matters. That God doesn’t choose those who – and help others to be – anything imaginable.

The need to touch people’s lives is what makes Natalie tick. She first realized it when working at SJA as its Admissions and Public Relations Director after college. Among her accomplishments, she began the Ambassadors program and classes in computer graphic design. These programs allowed her to witness the pivotal moment when sparks ignited in students and they realized they could accomplish their goals.

Natalie and her husband of 15 years, Steve Nelson, have two young sons – Connor and Corey. The family lives in Rocky River.

Her sister is Susan Leek-Biggs ’86. Natalie has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Cleveland Institute of Art, and has done coursework at Baldwin Wallace College for a Master’s in Education.

Humbled by her selection as a Distinguished Alumna, Natalie knows that she and her fellow honorees would still be doing the work they do and making the world a better place. “Because it’s who we are as Academy women,” she reasons. “That is truly the legacy of the Academy.”

Her SJA connection also includes niece Mara Biggs ’10.

Sister Pat has long championed the school’s causes. “I’m convinced that SJA makes a difference in the lives of its students — and ultimately in the world in which these women will live,” she explains. “To help this transformational legacy of SJA continue, to support and further this in any way is an important service.”

She entered the Congregation in 1964 after graduation from SJA. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Education, a Master of Arts in Religious Studies, and a Doctorate in Ministry.

She co-authored the book More Than Words and contributed to the book Crucible for Change.

In her nearly 48 years as a CSJ, Sister Pat has served on countless committees and task forces in the Congregation, the Cleveland Diocese and at SJA. She taught theology at the school, served as vocation minister, pastoral minister and on the Leadership Team of the Congregation, and held an elected role in the local Conference of Religious Leaders.

“My work enables me to be with groups of people when they are trying to make decisions about what really matters to them and what could potentially bring about needed change in their own organizations, church or society,” shares Sister Pat. “To be with them as they seek wise and courageous choices is a gift.”

Great in Brecksville. She’s a member of the worship and liturgical committees, facilitates a cancer support group, counts collections and participates in fundraisers. She also serves as a Eucharistic minister and takes Communion to the homebound in order to – in her words – “include them in our parish community.”

This inclusionary approach is signature Cathy. She approaches all people as equals. According to her Distinguished Alumnae Award nomination, Cathy has spent her life serving others, lives an active Catholic life and extols the virtues of an SJA woman.

She maintains a special connection to her alma mater through

a close friendship with her then-sophomore moderator, Kathleen Carey, CSJ ’49. Cathy and her husband of 26 years Joseph Skerl were married in the motherhouse chapel.

Cathy has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Ursuline College, and a Master’s in Social Work from Case Western Reserve University.

“I am humbled to be inducted as a Distinguished Alumna because my sisters – Barb Witt Cicerchi ’69, Peggy Witt Stuart ’78 and Carol Witt Wilms ’82 – nominated me,” Cathy says. “We have a very close bond, and part of that bond is our shared education at Saint Joseph Academy.” Niece Bridget Stuart ’15 carries on the SJA legacy.

ore than 440 people attended the Celebrate the Academy gala on Saturday, February 18, catching up with old and new friends, and setting a new fundraising record by netting more than $215,000 for student scholarship and academic initiatives.

Mr. Edward J. Conrad, Jr. received the Medaille Shield Award, given to non-alumnae friends of the Academy. Mr. Conrad has been married to Joan Dever Conrad ’49 for more than 60 years and has shown support to our school since he first met Joan when she was a sophomore at SJA. Special thanks go out to event chairs Donald and Mary Smetana Kolick ’83, parents of Sarah Kolick ’15.

s a young woman attending SJA, Janet Hostal Klenotic ’57 dreamed of becoming a nurse.

It was not a smooth road -- marriage and four children born within five years postponed any pursuit of a college degree. But a nursing career was never far from the thoughts of the busy wife and mother.

When she was 36, Mrs. Klenotic took a very brave step: with her children at the demanding ages of 10, 11, 12 and 13, Mrs. Klenotic returned to school. “I wanted to go forward and do it for myself,” shared Mrs. Klenotic. “It took me two years to get into the Nursing School, but I did it!”

Nursing proved to be everything she expected: a demanding, rewarding and spiritually fulfilling career.

Mrs. Klenotic spent more than 20 years at Parma Community General Hospital, working first in the medical/surgical Janet Hostal Klenotic field and then in geriatrics.

She eventually was in charge of scheduling for 104 nurses, often working 14 hours days to provide the best service she could for the patients.

Now retired, Mrs. Klenotic wants to share the joys and rewards of nursing with students from her beloved SJA. This winter, she chose to endow a scholarship for a student interested in pursuing a nursing career. The Janet Hostal Klenotic ’57 Endowed Scholarship will be awarded starting in the 2013-14 school year.

“SJA provided me with the knowledge that no matter how high the obstacles, I can accomplish any goal,” stated Mrs. Klenotic. “SJA students receive an excellent education, but also the gifts of determination and serenity. The support of the Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph allowed us to live our dreams. I will never forget that.”

Mrs. Klenotic has lived for 55 years in Brook Park with her husband Richard. They are parents of Brian, Lisa (who followed her mother in a nursing career), Karleen and the late David.

“The sense of determination and accomplishment I gained by attending Saint Joseph Academy has carried me through my life,” stated Mrs. Klenotic.

We would like to thank Mrs. Klenotic for the special gift of helping SJA students follow their dreams!

Birthday Present of Endowed Scholarship Honors Graduate's Love of SJA Roslyn Spencer Corrigan ’37 received a surprise 90th birthday present from her family that has special meaning for both her and SJA – her children and grandchildren told her they are establishing a Roslyn Spencer Corrigan ’37 Endowed Scholarship.

“We knew how much the school meant to her,” shared her daughter Margaret Naylon, who taught math here in the 1980s. Alumnae family members include Molly Roslyn Spencer Corrigan Zoltan ’81, Corrigan Bonnie C. Bunch ’60 and Maura Naylon Schroeder ’84.

Mrs. Corrigan started the first grade at the Academy in 1925, back when it was a elementary and high school boarding school.

“My whole life was here,” she explained during a recent visit back to the school.

“I can never express enough gratitude to my family for establishing a scholarship in my name,” shared Mrs. Corrigan. “What a tremendous birthday present! I am grateful to be a part of the gift of a Catholic education. This is truly the ‘gift that keeps on giving!’ ” Endowed scholarships such as the Corrigan family’s tribute to their mother are, indeed, a special way to honor a loved one or commemorate a special occasion

1950s

Kathleen Kilbane, CSJ ’52 received the annual “Walks of Life Award” from the Irish American Archives Society. This award is given to persons who have not only excelled in their professions, but have also given generously of their time and talent to make the Cleveland community a better place for all. Sr. Kathleen received this award for her work at the West Side Catholic Center and as the founder of Seeds of Literacy.

1960s

Margaret Koch Bednar N’66 was pictured in the WestLife newspaper as a high school volleyball official. Margaret has been officiating in this sport for 21 years.

Eileen Murray ’67 was honored by the Ursuline College-St. John College Alumnae Association with the 2011 Amadeus Rappe Award. This award is presented to an outstanding graduate who has made significant contributions to their religion, profession, home and community. Eileen is the Executive Director of Womankind Maternal and Prenatal Center and is a member of Communion of Saints Parish in Cleveland Heights.

Marilayne Maco Liba ’69 received her MBA, graduating with honors from Cleveland State University. Marilayne also was recognized by the International Business Honor Society at the graduation ceremony.

Denise Zeitz Simeone N’69 was named Director of Mission and Program Development for the National Catholic Reporter. Denise has worked for more than 30 years on the parish and diocesan levels in the areas of formation and leadership development of pastoral staff and lay leaders. She will be working on mission-related company projects at NCR.

CubClub Chris Cummings Tharp N’71, she also landed a job working for Chris’s company Harmony Home Care, Inc. Ginger also co-owns Needham Gardens, a small urban farm, with her son. You can find Ginger on Sundays beginning in June at the Kamm’s Corners Farmers Market.

Tina Haddad N’79 was featured in Crain’s Cleveland Business. Her company, Green Rock Lighting, was highlighted for producing hightech, cost-saving lighting products.

1980s

Rebecca Morrow ’89 was appointed to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network/United Network for Organ Sharing (OPTN/UNOS) Living Donor Committee.

Established by Congress, the OPTN is responsible for the oversight of all aspects of organ donation and transplantation within the U.S. The committee on which she serves has proposed (and submitted for public comment) new policy outlining informed consent, medical evaluation and follow-up for living kidney donors.

1990s

Allison Huber Motz ’91 wrote a children’s book titled “Where Is My Dee-Chee?” that takes a young girl around Cleveland-area, kid-friendly places in search of her pacifier.

Carrie Lynn Cook Rae ’97 married Evan Rae on November 12, 2011 in North Olmsted, Ohio.

2000s

Natalie Goffi Weintz ’00 and her husband David adopted siblings Kyle Ross and Mia Rose from the Ukraine. Natalie and David have four other children.

Fadia Nemeh ’02 opened her own boutique in Westlake called Mademoisell-Trendy Apparel & Accessories. Fadia, who graduated from John Carroll University and Case Western Reserve School of Law, chose to pursue a life-long dream of opening a boutique.

Mary Dyczek ’04 graduated from the Cleveland Marshall College of Law, passed the July 2011 Ohio State Bar Examination and has joined the law firm of Jones Day as an associate.

Christine Hakkio ’04 graduated from The Ohio State University in 2008, and earned a Master’s degree in Asian Studies from Turku University in Finland. She is currently working in Hiroshima, Japan, teaching English to high school and college students for English placement.

Krista Freeman ’07 was honored as the valedictorian at Cleveland State University both for the College of Science where she majored in Physics and minored in Math, and for the entire university. Krista plans to continue her education in Polymer Science.

Kelly Heilman ’08 made the record books at Kenyon College for her outstanding performance on the volleyball team. In the final collegiate game this season, Kelly dished out 25 assists for an even 1,300 assists and sixth-place all-time record at Kenyon.

Brianna Papotto ’09 was one of only 10 students awarded Ohio State University’s coveted National Athletic Trainers’ Association Research & Education Foundation Scholarship. The scholarship is based on academic performance, athletic training, clinical performance, leadership and community involvement. Brianna is a junior majoring in Athletic Training.

This 12-day experience will challenge, inspire and motivate students by providing exposure to academic curriculum in a unique and hands-on fashion. The core subjects of English, math, science and social studies will be emphasized. Students will also enjoy daily recreational activities and occasional field trips to explore the real world applications of the academic curriculum. Saint Joseph Academy faculty will direct this program.

Calling all Saint Joseph Academy alumnae who graduated in a year ending in “2” or “7”!!

Mark your calendars for the weekend of October 5-7, 2012! On Friday evening, October 5, there will be a get together at SJA just for the classes of 1997, 2002 and 2007.

On Saturday evening, October 6, there will be a dinner for all the reunion classes at the Westwood Country Club in Westlake. On Sunday, October 7, at 10 a.m. there will be a brunch at SJA for the Golden Girl (50+ reunions) classes of 1937, 1942, 1947, 1952, 1957 and 1962. At noon that same day, there will be a Mass at SJA for all alumnae and their families, followed by light refreshments and Open House.

2012 Nazareth Academy Reunion Luncheon All Nazareth Academy alumnae are welcome to attend their annual luncheon on Sunday, September 9, 2012 at the 100th Bomb Group Restaurant on Brookpark Road near Hopkins International Airport. Special recognition will be shown to attendees of reunion classes, especially the Class of 1962 celebrating their 50-year reunion.
